How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

5 of SAIGON’S BEST HIDDEN COCKTAIL BARS

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a place of surprises, much of them elusive to first-time visitors with just a few days on the ground. Though a bit challenging at first, Ho Chi Minh City eventually became our favorite city in the world and a base for many of our adventures in the Southeast Asian region. It’s also a pretty great place to go out and grab a drink, whether it’s a Monday or Saturday, Saigon’s music venues, breathtaking rooftop bars, and tiny neighborhood spots are buzzing.

Unlike the more world famous, easy-to-find spots of Bangkok and Shanghai, Saigon is a city of tight neighborhoods which unveil themselves only to those intrepid enough to explore the tiniest, faintest lines on the map. Saigon doesn’t have a Times Square or Pudong. It’s a megacity comprised of small, distinct districts and alleys. Perch ... Read More »

SIEM REAP’S 10 BEST BARS: CLASSY, HIDDEN DIVES JUST OUTSIDE OF ANGKOR

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Every year I find myself in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a week. It’s inevitable, and always enjoyable.

Angkor Wat is, along with Bagan in Myanmar, one of the two most spectacular temple sites in Asia, if not the world. I’ve come back again and again with friends, or by myself. Although lately I barely spend time in the temples of Angkor Wat, I love the cafe and bar scene of nearby Siem Reap, a charming little French colonial town adjacent to Angkor that now serves as the tourist-amenity center of the region. Though a tourist town, it’s far from a tourist trap. There is something about the clear blue sky, slow clouds and that long twilight that I love here. And, there’s the drinks.

Pub Street is famous here. It is the center of Siem Reap and the fulcrum of activity in ... Read More »

A Weekend Guide To Nuremberg

Ahh, Bavaria. The southern region of Germany is very visually and culturally different than what you’ll find in Berlin. Bratwursts, old beer halls and streets lined with half-timbered houses abound. Read on for Dame Traveler Contributor Meredith of The Glass Passage’s tips for the perfect long weekend in the city! Market Square by night — home of the world famous Christmas Market every December! WHERE TO STAY? Located just inside the walls of the old city and a stone’s throw from the main train station, you’ll find historic Hotel Victoria. The boutique hotel has been privately owned since its opening in 1896 — so you could say they know a thing or two about how to create a lovely and inviting environment that keeps guests coming back time and again! The rooms are comfortable and modern, yet the building itself is under monumental protection from the city, so it’s a wonderful blend of old and new. 25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN VIETNAM - The Hungry Suitcase

I love this country; I want you to love it, too. I’d just like to alert travelers to beware of the common first-time mistakes that may sour their experience of the local people and the country overall.Do your homework, know what to expect, and this is the most rewarding country in Southeast Asia to explore. Here goes:-1-TAKE YOUR VISA SERIOUSLY, VERY SERIOUSLY INDEEDYes, it seems like common sense, but I have seen tourists turned ... Mendonoma: An Insider Guide to California’s Northern California coast

by Leslie Parado @ Dame Traveler

If you hear someone talking about visiting Northern California, what comes to mind? The many sights and sounds of the San Francisco Bay Area? Hot-air ballooning over vineyards in Napa? Driving windy roads through massive redwood groves, perhaps? We have all that—and more. But if you’re looking for a destination a little more off the beaten path, a mere three hours can transport you from the bustling city of San Francisco to quiet, coastal country. From the town of Jenner in Sonoma County to the town of Elk in Mendocino County, California Highway 1 will lead you up cliffs that offer breathtaking ocean views, through pasture lands and state parks, and into some of the quaintest communities California has to offer. The locals call it “Mendonoma”. Mendonoma is a world of its own. The pace is relaxed. Even cell service takes vacations here. Have a little spending cash on hand, as some of the best-loved shops and attractions don’t accept credit cards. You’ll find all the extra preparation well worth the effort, though—your nerves will feel the downshift as soon as you see that Pacific Ocean. Start your exploration at The Point Arena Lighthouse and get a feel for coastal […]

8 best books on South-east Asia

The Independent

South-east Asia has undeniably had its fair share of war and torment through the centuries, from colonisation in Malaysia to communist rule in Cambodia and civil war in Vietnam.  But in the 21st century, the countries are recovering from their pasts and are instead known by nicknames such as Cambodia’s The Land of Smiles and the Philippines’ moniker, The Pearl of the Orient Seas.

The Best Places to Visit in Malta for an Awesome Experience

by Elena Tahora @ Dame Traveler

As a picturesque archipelago located between Sicily and the North-African Coast, Malta is the best country to visit if you are in need of a quiet, cultural getaway. From sandy beaches to residential towns, there are plenty of traditional towns and villages, plus some more developed areas to visit, making Malta an ideal location for people accustomed to all tastes. Being a small country, transportation also is available extensively. So, plan ahead, mark your favourite spots, and immerse yourself in the awesome cultural experiences that Malta has to offer. Valletta – The Capital As the capital of Malta, Valletta plays an important role in attracting tourists of all calibres. Described as ‘a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’, this destination is a perfect example of both the historical and commercial sides to the country. This is shown through prevalent historic sites – Girgenti Palace and Auberge De Castille, traditional shops and cafes – Caffe Prego and Dolce Peccati, as well as a multitude of international branded shopping destinations. St. Paul’s Bay – Old Town Since becoming a more popular tourist destination, St. Paul’s Bay has worked hard to conceal its original fisherman’s village character and has become well-known for its […]

8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?

Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »

The Best of Vietnam Insider Guide

by bucketlistbums @ Dame Traveler

I recently wrapped up my second visit to Vietnam, one of the most vibrant countries in Southeast Asia. Land of rice fields, lanterns and noodle soup. It was a trip of old favorites and new wonders, and I wanted to share just a few highlights with you lovelies. Happy travels! ♥ Favorite City – Hoi An This celebrated port city was home to a spectacular Ancient Town, a cluster of 800+ buildings and colorful corridors filled with charming shops, market stalls, restaurants, etc. on the banks of the Thu Bon River. And lit up at night, the place was even more magical! Every evening, I watched as tourists and locals boarded the tiniest boats to set lanterns afloat along the river. By 9 PM the river looked like a painting – a dark waterway aglow with hundreds of flickering yellow lights. Favorite Pool – Mai Chau Eco Lodge I had to go off-the-beaten path to find Vietnam’s most epic pool, nestled in the northern countryside. The Mai Chau Ecolodge was a haven of green with its surrounding rice fields, banana trees, swaying palms and limestone peaks. And smack dab in the middle of it all was this sparkling oasis of […]

10 THINGS I CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Recently I’ve taken a four-month break off of travel to settle into a comfortable life in a quiet town. It’s been nice, mostly.

I do miss packing and unpacking the bags. I miss tossing away ripped up socks, giving away paperback books, and moving what’s left of my big shampoo into a small little shampoo thingy.

Some things are essential to have packed and ready to grab when I’m on the road. I will not include the obvious things like a camera, computer, passport, etc. These following are the little home run hitters that are easy to forget about, but always needed:

1. DENTAL FLOSS

I like to eat. I like to eat meat. I like eating late. My teeth are spaced fairly far apart from laughing too much. Stuff gets in there and I need to get it out. I’ve often been wandering ... Read More »

Icarus

by Isabella Welch @ Dame Traveler

The story of Icarus was told to me as a child, told from a big, gilded storybook strewn atop the cloud-like duvet of my grandparent’s guest room. The story went like this: Icarus was a fool. Icarus did not listen to his father; what a terrible child we was, what sorrow he brought when he fell from the sun and into the waves, all because we was too confident in his wings. But anyone who grows up, if they can stomach the process, is Icarus. Icarus in the moment before failure makes sense. Anyone who travels, if they have the guts for it, is Icarus. Icarus in the moment he touched the sun and saw all the world. It’s just a children’s story, with beautiful words and (some say) antiquated meaning, a tale that teaches you of the arrogance of youth. But at some point or other, some more often than not, we all do this very Icarus-like thing, and leap into a world we do not understand. Others say, “be fearful, your capabilities haven’t been tested. Be careful, your faith in the world has not been proven.” But faith cannot be proven; if it could, we wouldn’t call it […]
