Purist Patisserie – Exquisite Entremet Cakes Found In the Heartlands. Hidden Gem At Kovan
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Wed Jan 03 17:47:52 PST 2018
It was quite a journey to locate Purist Patisserie, for it was smack right in the middle of a Kovan private housing estate, with no direct train or bus services. Situated at the end of shop houses of The Promenade @ Pelikat, it may be easy to overlook the shop if not for its bright pink interior and rose gold chandelier which caught my attention. Also note its rather limited opening hours, from Fridays to Sundays noon to 6pm. Not the most ideal location to set up a patisserie, but that does not deters Patissier Joanne from pursuing her dreams and setting up a place of her own to showcase her creations. Joanne’s forte lies in French entremet, which her meticulous crafting skills can be observed from the exquisiteness and aesthetic details of every entremet. But when it comes to taste evaluation, it is usually based on Patissiers’ concept as well as individuals’ preference due to the complexity and various components that go into the dessert. I took a liking to the Cebu Sunrise [$8] which consisted of coconut, mango and jasmine rice. The light coconut mousse was well complemented with sweet mango gelatin fillings and added rice cracker base for that crunch. The most aesthetical pleasing award would go to Fleur ($8), layered with thin waffle biscuit base, raspberry mousse and white chocolate. It was further topped with freeze-dried fruits, popping spheres and edible flowers for elevated appealing factor. I also liked how various components blended well to give an overall tangy note. While I usually love matcha desserts, the Zen Garden ($8) slightly fell short of my expectation. Layered with matcha, black sesame and yuzu, I found the citrus flavor of yuzu slightly overwhelming and outshone the other two components. For alcohol lovers, go for the Whiskey Bar...

It Snowed In The Sahara Desert This Week
by Ben Tyers @ The A List | The Urban List
Thu Jan 11 15:30:00 PST 2018
Australian cities have copped their fair share of big ol’ storms in the past couple of months, from the dumping of rain in Victoria in late November, Auckland's massive tropical storm, or the superstorm that Sydney didn’t actually cop this week—weather just keeps getting crazier and crazier.
Well, this week, to make things even a bit more wild. It snowed in the bloody Sahara Desert. Yep, a desert.
In case you’re not familiar with where the Sahara Desert actually is, you’ll find it right at the top of Africa and covers a whopping 9,200,000 square kilometres. To put that into perspective it’s a comparable area to both China and the U.S.A.
This isn’t the first time snow has fallen in the desert; it’s actually the third time that it’s happened in the past 40 years.
Check out some of the amazing photos captured of the event below.

Kazo – Taiwanese Kazu Kazu, Lava Polo Buns And ‘Sexy’ Matcha Latte Bottles, At Chinatown Point
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Sun Jan 07 18:17:54 PST 2018
Taiwanese Bakery Kazo has opened at Chinatown Point (nearer Hong Lim Food Centre side), offering a selection of Polo Buns, Cream Puffs, and Kazu Kazu which are long choux pastries. The brand is supposedly popular in Taiwan, with a different name of Nichifu 日芙洋菓子 with stores in Taichung. (My Taiwanese friends have never heard of it though.) Having just returned from Taiwan, I was inevitably curious towards Kazo and its products. Offerings included Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50 for 2 scoops, $3.80 for 1), Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00), Crispy Cream Puff ($1.80), Kazu Kazu ($3.50), Cheese Tart ($3.00 for original, $3.20 for chocolate or matcha) and Kazoman Beverages ($3.00 – $3.50). This is like many things trending / instagrammable all in one store. The Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50) could remind some of Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff, in which you could choose from Hokkaido Cream, Matcha, and Chocolate. The former boosted a more crusty puff pastry and creamier quality ice cream, but lacked of that buttery fragrance. While I wished I could eat the Polo with my hands (like how the photos featured). In reality, the ice cream would start dripping within seconds and scooping from the provided plastic box would be cleaner. I was curious how the Kazu Kazu would match up with the famous Japan’s Zaku Zaku – which by the way has opened in Taipei and ‘inspired’ many other versions. This Kazu Kazu had a firmer crusty outer layer which I did not mind, though its filling of Hokkaido cream was mild and pale in comparison. My sense is the Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00) could land up being its most popular item, as local consumers are still fascinated by the idea of flowing lava. Mine was indeed very molten. Though I suspect some might come...

Secret House – Authentic Home-Cooked Vietnamese Food In A Secret Garden, At Ho Chi Minh City
DanielFoodDiary.com
Subscribe: [Ho Chi Minh City] Saigon (former name of HCMC) continues to welcome new dining establishment and Secret House is one on the radar for many foodies. Within a few months of opening, it has been favourably reviewed and loved. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The owner has a restaurant portfolio that is well loved, namely Mountain Retreat and Secret Garden. These are restaurants frequented by both locals and tourists looking for authentic Vietnamese food in a comfortable and rural setting, They all serve Vietnamese home cooked food, and are packed be it weekday or weekend, which says something about the quality of the restaurants they operate. Secret House is by no means different. You can expect nothing less from the artistic minds behind this restaurant. The main appeal lies in its rural decoration, where an inner courtyard has been smartly and creatively turned into an herb garden. Dark wooden furniture and old-school style tableware also add rustic charm to the dining experience. The menu is extensive, aiming for every day staples of Vietnamese cuisine. Photos are included along with English translation which makes for easy ordering. The dishes are of small portion thus great for sharing, suitable for those with a hankering for every flavour. One can start off with Guava Salad with Dried Baby Shrimp (85,000VND, SGD$5.09) that serves as a good palate cleanser. The guava provided a difference in texture as well as light sweetness to the mix without being overpowering. The right amount of bite for each piece of Deep Fried Sticky Rice (95,000VND, SGD$5.69) topped with sliced mushroom, dried pork floss and minced pork, dipped in chili sauce made another delightful appetizer. On almost every occasion that I have eaten there, this is a dish I order without fail: Fried... Continue Reading

Horoscopes | Your Co(s)mic Week Ahead
by Marina Nazario @ The A List | The Urban List
Sun Jan 21 14:00:00 PST 2018
After the storm comes the sun. Wait, what are we saying? We've been spoilt with hot and sunny weather all weekend. The stars must be over their grudge from last week. Whoop whoop!
Take the opportunity to go out with someone you've been crushing on, or use your savings to buy something totally unnecessary. Whatever it is, make it count. Because you never know when the stars will change their mind and bring down the hammer of Thor. Here's what's in store for you this week.
Aries
Recently you've been feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. Take a chill pill, Aries. You’re only human. Your never-ending to-do list will get done. All you gotta do is put your head down and focus. We’re seeing a big reward for your hard work in the future.
Taurus
Your ambition is making you antsy, Taurus. Hold your horses! Don’t make any rash moves like buying an indoor plant that you're sure to kill. Think hard about what you want, talk to your supportive squad and make a game plan.
Gemini
Gem, you might be feeling like no one is paying attention to you lately. Wahh, don't be a baby about it. Do something about it. Offer up a nice gesture to a friend, like taking them out for a juicy burger. (Wanna take us?!) Don’t get this confused with buying their love...it's all about the giving.
Cancer
Cancer, have you been feeling like your life is perfect lately? Coz it has been. And we’re sorry to break it to you, but life’s gonna start to get a little harder now. The only way to get through this? Stick to your daily routine and eat lots of cake. Don’t get distracted by things that will only waste your time (like eating anything other than cake).
Leo
What has gotten into you lately, Leo?! Stop being so lazy. Put a plan into action and get your shit together. It’s the bloody end of January. Sheesh. Once you start knocking things off your to-do list, you’ll feel like your old, energetic self.
Virgo
You’ve been working hard lately, Virgo. Take a breather, because big things are about to fall into place, either at work or with family. And once it does, we give you full permission to ENJOY IT. That’s why you work so hard in the first place, to enjoy stuff like tiramisu afterwards. DUH.
Libra
Alright, Libra, stop makin’ it rain. You won’t have any cash left the way you’ve been spending money. Challenge yourself to budget this week—ever heard of that? Try making dinner at home and check out some of these TV revivals from the comfort of your couch. Your wallet will thank you.
Scorpio
Good onya, Scorpio! You’ve been keeping all your finances in order and now you’re ready to make some moves. Whether it’s with dating, work or family now's the time to take the bull by the horns and go for what you want 100%. So if you’ve been crushing hard on someone, why don’t you, like, ask them out?
Sagittarius
You’ve got a lot of energy boiling up this week, Sag, so why don’t you use it to be proactive about your goals, or ticking off that lengthy to-do list. But don’t use that energy to pick a fight with a friend or a partner. That will just get you nowhere and you ain’t got time for that.
Capricorn
Lucky you, Cap, you’re being rewarded for keeping on-track with your priorities. We’re gonna go ahead and say that what you’ve been wishing for is gonna come true. (Not that we’re a Genie or anything.) So if you’ve been dreaming of buying a new car or wishing for a boozy Harry Potter brunch, then you might get it. Use your wishes wisely.
Aquarius
Feeling a little cheeky, are we Aquarius? We must say you’re looking quite attractive this week. Use this confidence to get shit done. If you’re single as a Pringle, now’s the time to strut your stuff. Werk. It.
Pisces
Damn, you’re a mess Pisces. Why don’t you stop multitasking and get it together, mate? Go to a yoga class to reel in your focus or maybe let off a little steam at your local gym. Damn, we’ve never seen you like this before…

SBCD Korean Tofu House – Korean Soontofu Restaurant Offers NEW Unagi (Jang-Eo) Dishes, Starting from $5.90
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Thu Jan 04 05:32:15 PST 2018
The one Korean dish that I enjoy for the level of comfort it brings is the Soontofu, the soft tofu stew with ingredients such as seafood and vegetables in a spicy broth. “Soon” in Korean means “soft”. SBCD Korean Tofu House is one of the few Soontofu specialty restaurants in Singapore, with branches at Tanjong Pagar Centre and a newly opened outlet at Millenia Walk. The Millenia Walk branch was HUGE (at least in Singapore’s context), with spacious interior, tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and open kitchen concept where you can observe the team of chefs preparing the soups. Don’t have to worry smelling like Korean stew as you walk out as the space is ventilated enough. One important highlight: At the back of the Korean restaurant is where the soft and silken tofu is made FRESH daily. The tofu you are eating is made right in the morning. The chefs from SBCD use special soybeans imported from Paju, South Korea. The area is said to be close to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and contains the freshest-tasting produce due to the untouched nature. Surprise, surprise. The Korean restaurant has also introduced NEW Jang-Eo (장어) dishes – fresh water eel imported from Korea. While the Jang-Eo is popular during the hot summer days in Korea, you seldom see it in Singapore, at least not yet. The NEW menu will comprise of 4 new Jang-Eo dishes including three under the dine-in menu and one for takeaway. Here are the food items you can expect: Unagi Main on Hotplate ($19.90++, with Soju $29.80++) The Koreans love their Jang-Eo – freshwater eel marinated in novelty sauces, with savoury and delicate taste. Called the “Jangeo-gui” which literally translates to “grilled eel”, the Koreans believe that eating this dish can help improve stamina and prevent heat...

Mellow Pan。メロ Singapore – 1st Japanese Melonpan Specialty Shop With Ice Cream At Our Tampines Hub
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Wed Jan 03 23:00:34 PST 2018
The melonpan with ice cream, a Japanese sweet bun, reminded me of our popular local street food: Ice Cream Sandwich. The $1 Ice Cream Sandwich sold along the streets in pushcarts had always been one of Singapore’s Must-Eat items, so popular that it made into one of BuzzFeed’s listicles in 2016, which (unfortunately) went viral for the wrong reason. The Japanese melonpan (also known as melon bun) was named due to its outward appearance which resembled that of a rock melon, but in fact doesn’t taste like one traditionally. Located at the basement level of Our Tampines Hub is Singapore’s first melonpan specialty shop, offering Plain MelonPan in 2 different sizes: Small (1 for $2.60, 5 for $10) and Large (1 for $3.40, 3 for $9), MelonPan Gelato with 3 options: Small melon pan with 1 choice of flavour ($4.80), Small melon pan with 2 flavours ($6.80) and Large melon pan with 2 flavours ($7.80). Order and payment is first made at the casher before proceeding to the right for selection of gelato flavours from their wide selection on display. Interesting flavours include Avocado, Chendol, Honeycomb, Yuzu and D24 Durian, which are local and relatable. Toppings such as Sunflower seeds, Rainbow sprinkle and Peanuts are available at an additional $0.60 whereas durian toppings are priced at $2.50. I chose the Avocado and Black Sesame Gelato to go with my Large MelonPan Gelato ($7.80) that came with 2 rusks (twice-baked bread). The rusk actually acted as a “spoon” to scoop the gelato instead of licking or biting directly into it. I made the mistake of eating my “spoon” (accidentally) and ended up in a mess while licking the gelato though. The generous amount of gelato (which tasted more like ice cream with a harder texture and more solid shape) was actually...

12 Health And Fitness Events You Need To Know About This Year
by Rosie Gregory @ The A List | The Urban List
Wed Jan 10 23:00:00 PST 2018
Jumping on the health and fitness bandwagon this year? We’ve got you sorted with all the very best events to book into your calendar now so you can immerse yourself in the #Wellness and #Fitspo world. From the classic Perth races to philanthropic causes and the emergence of holistic festivals that will have you uplifted (instead hungover) the next day, we’ve rounded up the best of the best so you can pencil them in, start training and tick off some of those resolutions in 2018.
Here are the best perth health and fitness events you need to know about.
South West Yoga Festival
The first ever Yoga festival for the South West launches this weekend with a full day festival of conscious celebration going down on a private property overlooking Bunker Bay. Melding the mindful and spiritual, this inaugural festival will reset and refresh your mind, body and soul for the year ahead. From flow classes to drumming workshops, health talks and crystal meditation, even chakra dancing, expect to get downward dogging and syncing to high vibes, all in the name of yogic celebration!
The Perth Wellness Festival
Bare & Wilde has teamed up with EcoLuxe Events to bring us the first Perth Wellness Festival on 4 Febraury this year. If you like the sound of a day full of yoga, Pilates, wellness workshops, fresh coconuts and nourishing noms then this is one for you. Speakers from Sodashi Skincare, Wellineux and The Modern Day Woman will lead the wellness workshops and will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.
Melanoma March
When you think of Cottesloe beach, the first image that often springs to mind is tanned bodies baking on the white sand in high summer. Despite everyone knowing that we should fake not bake, melanoma is still on the rise and this year more than 14,000 Aussies will be diagnosed with it. While we’ve increased efforts to slip, slop, slap, we're still without a cure for the most common cancer in young Australians. On 8 April, our beloved Cottesloe beach will play host to the Melanoma March, with either a 5km walk or 10km run to support melanoma research, so you can skip the tanning and opt for fitness and charitable activism instead!
Wanderlust 108
Wanderlust, the world’s only mindful triathlon event, might not reward you with a medal as you cross the finish line, but the intentional activity series will reward you with a heightened sense of wellness (sahhh on trend for 2018). With a reputation for bringing in expert teachers, spiritual leaders and musical masterminds, this is a celebration of all things epic in the mindful movement world. The holistic upgrade on a traditional triathlon includes a 5km run, outdoor flow class and a guided meditation.
Mother’s Day Classic
The largest community fundraising event for breast cancer research will be back again in 2018 so you can walk, run or skip your way around the 4km or 8km course in aid of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bring family and friends along to honour and celebrate at the Tribute Wall set up in the Supreme Court Gardens before cruising the picturesque route around Riverside Drive in your prettiest of pink outfits!
Bridges Night Ride
Cycling the Swan River may be a classic “middle aged man in lycra” activity, but the Bridges Night Ride is set to change that on 9 June this year. Lighting up the night for the MSWA charity, this night-time ride will have you decking yourself out with reflective gear, strips, glow sticks and even Christmas lights, to join in on a 40km or 70km scenic route of the city. Thankfully, it will be so dark you can almost miss the obscene amount of tight lycra shorts…
Step Up For MSWA
Tackled Jacobs Ladder once and now feel ready to level up? Then meet your next challenge—the towering 1,103 stairs of Perth’s tallest building, Central Park. If you can bear the vertigo, get ready to run, climb, or even crawl if you must, your way to the top in support of MSWA. Super-fitties can go it alone otherwise (us sane folk) can enter as part of a team and face the 53 flights to conquer the vertical challenge on 17 June.
Lorna Jane Active Nation Day
Active Nation Day is fast becoming a staple in the Aussie Workout Calendar. Founded by home-grown activewear label, Lorna Jane Active, with a simple mission of helping us to move more, these events draw in the big crowds for outdoor boot camp sessions and fitspo celebrations, all in the name of sweating, celebrating and supporting healthy, active bodies. Dates are yet to be confirmed for 2018 but we have our fingers crossed!
City To Surf
The city’s most iconic race is set to return on 26 August, leaving you approximately seven months to prepare for that 42km marathon. Not into the long-distance thing? Don’t despair, this community filled event offers varying lengths for all fitness levels, from 4km, 12km to 21km, so you can walk, jog or party with the crowd on your way from the CBD to coast. And all that huffing and puffing won’t just be for your own personal achievement, flex your philanthropic muscle by fundraising for Activ or your favourite charity and put that sweat to good work.
Spartan Race
After the success of the 2017 Spartan Race, we have our fingers crossed that Reebok and Spartan Australia will be bringing the world’s premier obstacle course back to the west. Far beyond your usual race, here you will face obstacles the whole way around the course to challenge your fitness, strength and mobility. From barbed wire crawls, to rope climbs and hoists, get yourself prepared now by not only conditioning your body (beware: burpees) but also your mind to tough it out! If you’re looking to sign up, get prepared with these handy hacks and survival tips and get into the Spartan state of mind!
Flow Festival
Flow Festival, WA’s annual three-day celebration of yoga, music and healing arts is back to unite the community amidst the gum trees of Serpentine. With interactive workshops and yoga sessions, healing meditations and storytelling, it’s a touch woo-woo and whole lot uplifting. The more holistic take on a classic summer festy will feature inspirational teachers, foodies, body workers and healers, so get ready to get flowing, aligned and soulful! Dates are yet to be confirmed, but generally, the event runs near the summer solstice in December.
F45 Playoffs
Are you a member of the F45 cult? Then start prepping now for the ultimate in functional fitness championships with the F45 Playoffs. Testing your agility, endurance and strength, these playoffs will pull out the fittest of the fit through the challenging trials and a chance to win state, national and even world titles. Think you’ve got what it takes to earn the title of fittest in the world? Better start hitting those sessions now…

Cooked It: How To Make A Cafe-Standard Eggs Benny At Home
by Millie Lester @ The A List | The Urban List
Tue Jan 09 13:00:00 PST 2018
Enough is enough. Our house deposits have been sucked down the gurgler for too many years, so it’s time to step up and take control of the brekkie market or be forced to kiss your future walk-in wardrobe goodbye. We’ve spent some perilous evenings over the last few weeks taste testing numerous hollandaise sauces and poached eggs to bring you the crème de la crème of eggs benny recipes.
And here it is. Here's how to make the best possible eggs benedict at home for yourself.
Ingredients
2 rashers of shortcut bacon (what the hell, make it 4) 1 English muffin, split 1 teaspoon of white vinegar 2 eggs Salt and pepper, to taste Hollandaise sauce (see ingredients below) Fresh chopped parsley, for a ~ritzy~ garnishHollandaise
2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Pinch cayenne Pinch saltMethod
Pop to the shops and grab the ingredients. Don’t fall victim to the marked down rotisserie chickens, they are not your friend right now, free-range eggs are. Head home and start vigorously whisking those egg yolks with lemon juice together in a stainless steel bowl until the eggs thicken and double in volume. Admire your biceps in the hallway mirror. Pop that bowl over a saucepan filled halfway with barely simmering water (that’s not touching the bottom of the bowl). Keep whisking those eggs rapidly while not letting them get too hot or scrambled. Slowly pour in the melted butter while whisking, and keep going until the sauce has thickened and doubled in volume. Remove that artery-clogging goodness from the heat and whisk in the cayenne and salt, before covering the whole lot and placing it in a warm spot until ready to be poured over some phresh eggies. Hot tip: if the ‘daise gets too thick, stir in a couple of drops of warm water before you get cracking on serving brekkie. Grab a frypan and start frying the bacon, then put the English muffin halves in the toaster. Fill a saucepan half full of water, splash in the white vinegar and bring it to a slow boil. Crack the first egg into the water without breaking the yolk. Repeat with your second egg, Turn the heat down until the water’s at a gentle simmer and cook those bad boys for 3.5 minutes until the egg white is set and the yolk is deliciously soft. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon, allowing them to drain. Grab those freshly popped English muffin halves, top them with melted butter, bacon and a poached egg. Sprankle with salt and pepper and then *spoon* on the hollandaise sauce (a.k.a. freeflow that mofo aaaaaalll over). Instagram a picture of those ‘daisey eggs with the hashtag #hollandaisefordays.Check out all of our other great recipes here.

Chen San Ding 陳三鼎青蛙鮮奶 – Best Bubble Milk Drink In Taipei, Near Gongguan Night Market
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Wed Jan 03 06:44:16 PST 2018
[Taipei] Chen San Ding 陳三鼎青蛙鮮奶 has been widely reviewed to be the best bubble milk drink in Taipei. It is located near Gonguan Night Market, an area where the university students typically hang out. What? Not 50嵐, Chun Shui Tang 春水堂, ShareTea, 丸作 which all have more swanky shops and long list of beverages. While Chen San Ding is widely known to serve “bubble tea”, there is no tea in any of its offerings. The signature drink is called 青蛙撞奶, directly transported to “frog knocking against the milk”. No frogs are harmed in the process, as the boba (tapioca pearls) used are thought to resemble frog’s eggs. What you get is a cup of boba pearls, caramel, cold milk, with choice of ice. All drinks are affordable priced at TWD40, which works out to be SGD$1.80. This is what you call cheap and good. Upon holding the cup, I couldn’t help noticing that the bottom was warm while the top layer was cold. That is because the tapioca pearls are cooked on the spot in brown sugar, giving them the soft texture and lingering sweetened and caramalised taste. The pearls were indeed soft, sweet, chewy and you just couldn’t resist having more. Like having a mini-party in your mouth. It felt like a kind of stress-relieving munching on them. The milk itself was not that sweet, which made the entire cup kind of balanced. Other drinks such as Ai Yu Glass Jelly, Brown Sugar Glass Jelly, Lemon with Pearls, Green Bean with Pearls are available, all priced at TWD40. While you cannot choose your sugar level, you can have an option of with or without ice. I went early in the morning, and was faced with a queue of about 5 to 10 people. But it quickly got longer, though...

Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice 金峰魯肉飯 – Popular Lu Rou Fan Eatery In Taipei
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Sat Jan 06 18:00:24 PST 2018
[Taipei] Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice is a well-known eatery (at least among the locals) in Taipei that serves one of the most popular Taiwanese dishes, “Lu Rou Fan” otherwise known as Braised Pork Rice). There are several other places in the Roosevelt Road (Luosifu Lu) neighbourhood that serve braised pork rice, but this hole-in-the-wall dining spot has a reputation for being the best in town. The good news is that this place is budget-friendly with reasonably priced dishes that come in big portions. Keep in mind that there is usually a line in front of Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, especially during lunch hours. Do not expect too much from the interior, as this place is more like casual local eatery than an actual restaurant. The tables are close to one another, and there is a chance that you will have to share a table with other guests. If you are in a hurry, you can always take your food to go. The Braised Pork Rice, priced at NT$30, NT$40, NT$50 (SGD$1.30, SGD$1.80, SGD$2.50) for their small, medium and large bowls, is definitely the signature dish here at Jin Feng in Taipei. The dish is served with a large amount of rice and topped off with a slice of bitter melon and braised pork. One thing to note is that while Singaporeans are used to bowls with loads of meat with less rice. The reverse seems to apply to many Lu Rou Fan stalls in Taiwan where there is very little meat in contrast to rice. I also noticed that other restaurants that offer this dish tend to serve it with more fat than meat, which is not the case here. The draw to me was the savoury sauce on the fluffy rice, when paired with hot soup was...

8 Of The Best Outdoor Workouts In Perth
by Rosie Gregory @ The A List | The Urban List
Sat Jan 13 12:00:00 PST 2018
If there’s one thing us Perthlings like to boast about to our eastern neighbours, it’s our endless sunny days, pristine, scenic coastline and epic, expansive outdoor spaces. With a natural playground on our doorstep, we on the west coast are fond of an outdoor workout and for good reason. Studies prove that outdoor movement can decrease tension, anger and depression, while getting out into the green spaces will help boost your mood and self-esteem—not a bad way to improve your physical and mental health, all while topping up your vitamin D levels.
To get you out of the gym and into the great outdoors, here’s a roundup of the best outdoor workouts in Perth.
Rottnest Island Bike Loop
As if you needed any other excuse to make a trip over to Rotto, this island paradise is home to one of Perth’s most scenic bike routes. Hire a bike or BYO on the ferry and get pedalling on the 25km bike loop around the island, showcasing all the very best Rotto highlights—lighthouses, hidden coves, snorkelling bays, a quokka or two—and it throws in a few hills for good measure as you make your way to the most western point of the island. You can cruise the loop in a few hours’ time, then cool off for a dip in the pristine island waters, or a cheeky pint at the pub…
The Bridges Scenic Running Route
One of the most popular running routes in town, The Bridges 10km loop showcases city views and cultural highlights dotted along the riverside. Taking off and finishing back at McCallum Park in South Perth, you can run the loop in either direction (though apparently “real” runners only go anti-clockwise) and still be blown away by the scenery. As you hug the river the whole way, this flat path is perfect for a distance run or if intervals are your thing, you can practice your sprints amongst the markers between Mends Street and The Swan River Trust, placed at every 200m.
Jacobs Ladder
In one of Perth’s most iconic locations—Kings Park, of course—is the torturous secret weapon to getting fit and toned, fast. Jacobs Ladder is 242 lung bursting steps that will accelerate your cardiovascular fitness levels and provide you with some note-worthy HIIT intervals—perfect for that afterburn effect. Move over squat rack, hitting these stairs will whip your posterior chain (a fancy term for the backside of your body, including your booty, thighs and calves) into shape in no time. Plus, if you’re going to be doubled over trying to catch your breath anywhere, let it be at the peak of this staircase as you gaze out over the city skyline.
Surfing
There are numerous ways you get a workout in amongst the waves (if you need some more inspo, we got you), but the West Aussie’s favourite? Surfing, of course. A killer workout for the core and upper body while honing your balance and co-ordination skills, surfing is also a great way to connect to nature and an incredible mindful movement practice—you’ll be so focused on getting onto those waves there will be no time to worry about anything else! If your status is more grom than shredder, don’t worry, some helpful advice from the experienced team at Surf School Perth will have you carving up the waves in no time.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Looking for another way to get active in the water without getting your hair wet? Then choose this core-building, arm-toning, balance boosting workout. Stand up paddle boarding requires minimal skill, so after hiring a board from the crew at one of these spots it will take just a few minutes to get your balance atop the wide, stable board. Then you can get paddling down the river or calm coastline—trust us, it’s a dreamy way to start your day before the Freo Doctor rolls in—and be rewarded with zen vibes, prime photo-ops (SUP yoga anyone?!) and a total body, low impact sweat session.
Outdoor Bootcamps
A class that's great for accountability and fun while whipping your butt into shape and a chance to top up your tan? Count us in! Outdoor boot camps are a staple of the Perth fitness scene and it’s just about certain that any local park you pass by will have a team sweating it out as they sprint, squat, box and high five each other—all in the name of healthy living. If you’re looking for a challenging, but fun and friendly group to join south of the river, look no further than CounterBalance Health in Ardross and Winthrop. These boot camp sessions incorporate HIIT, boxing, cardio drills and bodyweight exercises to help you build functional strength and fitness prowess, all while promoting a balanced lifestyle and health focused culture. PS. Busy mums these sessions are totally kid friendly, so they can play on the side-lines as you get sweaty!
Sunrise Yoga
What could be more zen that saluting the sun as it rises high above the ocean? Start your day with intention as you stretch it out with energising and restorative sunrise yoga sessions with Spanda Yoga School. Held on the foreshore at South Beach, your moving meditation practice is suitable for all levels and enhanced by the salty breeze and sunshine as you soak up the energy of Fremantle. After all that flowing, simply refresh yourself with a quick dive into the ocean–perfection!
Outdoor Hikes
West Aussies love a good outdoor walk, and there is none more iconic for the avid hiker than the Bibbulmun Track. Showcasing the best of our very own backyard, the track spans 900km from Kalamunda to Albany, but for something a little closer to home (and more palatable for a one day adventure), try Perth’s best hike from Mundaring Weir Hotel to the Golden View Lookout in Kalamunda. Expect beautiful Instagram shoot backdrops—I mean, scenic views—over Mundaring Weir and Lake CY O’Connor (important historical landmarks FYI) as you hike your way around the 7.4km trail. PS. Don’t forget the water, sunscreen and fly spray!

Amazon recently announced that they’ve narrowed the list of cities for their new headquarters down to 20 from 238. Inspired by the potential a powerhouse like Amazon would provide its future digs, we did some further refining of our own. Here’s who’s out: giant metropolitan areas that are already doing fine, with apologies to New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, Chicago […]

6 TV Revivals To Look Forward To In 2018
by Millie Lester @ The A List | The Urban List
Fri Jan 19 12:00:00 PST 2018
As we wave goodbye to another year in television, we look ahead to 2018 and all the Sundays we’ll spend in bed on Netflix, eating packets of Clinkers with the curtains drawn. Some of the most notable revivals of 2017 were Will & Grace, Prison Break, Twin Peaks and That’s So Raven (look it up, that shit happened), and in 2018 we welcome some even juicier revivals on our screens.
Here are 6 TV revivals to look forward to in 2018.
1. Arrested Development
It’s time to tidy up the Banana Stand because our favourite dysfunctional American family id returning to our tellies in 2018 for a much anticipated fifth season. It’s already been confirmed that the entire main cast will be returning to reprise their signature roles, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, David Cross and Alia Shawkat. The series is set to premiere on Netflix around May next year.
2. Charmed
There have been whispers of a ‘70s-set reboot of our second favourite witchcraft reboot (three words: The Worst Witch) during the last twelve months and it has been confirmed that an initial plot script was submitted. Unfortunately, the network (The CW) didn’t lurv it, so the Charmed reboot is still officially in the redevelopment phase, however, everyone’s praying for a 2018 release.
3. Downton Abbey
With the latest season of Crowns currently consuming our eyeballs outside of work hours, it’ll come as a relief to know that another one of our favourite hoighty-toighty British fams will be gracing our screens in the near future. A Downton Abbey movie is currently in the works. Folks are currently hoping and praying that it’ll reunite the original cast and give us an update on the Crawleys. The NBC Universal president earlier this year revealed that they’re working on getting the script right at the moment and will hopefully have something to send to cinemas by late-2018. As tempting as it is though, we probably shouldn’t hold our breath…
4. The L Word
Joining the list of long-awaited TV revivals is early 2000s classic, The L Word. The long-running Showtime series originally aired from 2004 to 2009 and followed the lives of a Los Angeles-based girl gang of queer ladies whose lives were nothing short of dramatic, heartbreaking and hilarious. The revival is currently in development, as of mid-2017, and is expected to feature all three main leading ladies - Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey. Exact air date is yet to be confirmed, anticipation for said revival is very much confirmed.
5. Magnum, P.I.
Our favourite moustached Navy SEAL-turned-private eye is making a very likely return to our screens in the next twelve months. The ‘80s action drama, starring Tom Selleck (the other greatest love of Monica Geller’s life), flaunted ol’ Magnum’s ability to use military expertise to solve the hardest of cases. The reboot is currently in development with CBS, and the air date is yet to be confirmed.
6. Queer Eye For The Straight Guy
The Block can officially stick it up their pipe and smoke it because early 2000s cult classic, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, is officially coming back to screens in 2018. The Bravo reality series, which originally aired between 2003 and 2007, is set to feature a brand new Fab Five who promise to “move from the Big Apple to turn the Red States pink - one makeover at a time.” Eight episodes have been commissioned by Netflix and the series has a soft premiere date of February 2018.

Sugar Miss – Popular Instagrammable Marble Cube Cake And Marble Cheese Cake At Taipei
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Thu Jan 04 17:26:55 PST 2018
[Taipei] One of Taipei’s most instagrammable dessert café of late has to be Sugar Miss, with photos of their famed Marble Cube Cake trending in several social media feeds (at least the Chinese ones). The Marble Cube Cakes come with varied fillings of matcha, raspberry and taro, available in very limited quantities. Each is priced about NT$240 – 265 (SGD$10.80 – SGD$11.90), considered on the higher side for Taiwan, though Singaporeans should be used to these prices for cakes. Do note there is a minimum expenditure of NT$200 required for each customer, which should be easily met as long as you get a drink. Reservations are recommended, as the café can get very popular during the weekends. As I arrived about 2pm, there were just 2 Marble Cube Cake left. The décor looked rather “Lady M” – all clean, white with marbled tables, and ironically Lady M Taipei is just located a short distance away with a moderately long queue. The entire vibes felt rather ‘cold’ though, without the extreme friendliness you see at other Taipei café places. Other offerings included the best-selling Marble Cheese Cake (NT$190 per slice, SGD$8.50), and Mille Crepe Cakes with flavours of Matcha Milk, Earl Grey, Valrhona Chocolate, Taro and Seasonal Fruit (NT$180 – 230, SGD$8.00 – 10.30). The Marble Cube Cake was certainly a good-looker, different from other conventional cakes, placed on a marbled plate on white table. This café certainly knows about how to get good lighting for optimal photos. Unfortunately, taste wise, it wasn’t the most impressive. It was OKAY. While the top molten layer looked melty, it was solidified and didn’t add much taste wise. Beneath was a chiffon layer and raspberry fillings that didn’t quite flow at all. It was probably just this cake, as I have seen other versions...

Moonlight Cinema Is Hosting A Spice Girls Sing-A-Long Sesh
by James Shackell @ The A List | The Urban List
Sun Jan 21 13:58:00 PST 2018
Get ready to ‘zig-a-zig-ah’, people. Moonlight Cinemas has just announced possibly the greatest sing-a-long of all time.
It’s all to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Spice World (aka Richard E. Grant at his bloody finest). Moonlight will be screening Spice World on Friday 9 February, and audience members are encouraged to sing-a-long as much as possible, regardless of actual musical talent.
Dressing up is optional. But if you have a spare Union Jack bodycon dress lying around, feel free to go nuts.
As always with Moonlight, make sure to pack snacks, blankets and pillows. Because even a 90-minute movie can seem really long when you’re sitting on your elbows. If you’re feeling super extra, Gold Grass is always a good call.
Say you’ll be there.

Cooked It: How To Make A Kickass Cheese And Bacon Cob Loaf At Home
by Millie Lester @ The A List | The Urban List
Tue Jan 23 13:00:00 PST 2018
It’s time to give the old lamb roast the flick because the days of backyard banter over meat and three veg have been and gone and the time for cheese and bacon-filled bread loafs is RIGHT EFFING NOW. You can start sending your letters of appreciation to The Urban List head office because we’ve officially put pen to paper to publish what can only be described as an insane addition to any social gathering, food-related or otherwise.
Here’s how to make a kickass cob loaf at home.
Ingredients
1 cob loaf 250g tub of Philadelphia 300mL of sour cream 250g of tasty cheese 210g of creamed corn 4 rashers of bacon, diced 6 spring onions, sliced and dicedMethod
Grab your Woolies tote bags and hit the supermarket. You can get a mean round cob from almost any bakery, as well as any major supermarket. The same goes for cheese and bacon buns, they have nothing to do with this recipe, but leaving a bakery without them is a sin. Head home and preheat your oven to 150 degrees Celsius, then use a serrated bread knife to slice the top off the cob and tear out the inside of the loaf in pieces. Pop those juicy bread bits in a container and set aside for the mo. Try not to eat them all. Line an oven tray with baking paper, pop the cob loaf skeleton on there and then fry the bacon in a pan to the desired level of ~sizzle~. Combine all of the remaining ingredients in a bowl (bacon included) and pour the mixture into the cob loaf husk and pop it in the oven. Bake that bad boy for ninety minutes, and then remove it from the oven, add the torn away bread to the tray and bake for a further ten minutes. Pull that delicious b*stard from the oven, grab a piece of bread, dive into that cheesy cob and Instagram a pic of carby cob loaf with the hashtag #cobloafoftheday.Image credit: taste.com.au

Where To Find The Best Halal Food In Perth
by Kirsty Petrides @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 15 13:39:00 PST 2018
Australia. The melting pot of cultures. The good news is that it means we have options a plenty when it comes to dining out. The sometimes tricky news is that we all have differing dietary backgrounds and beliefs. But fret not, because we have found some of the best eateries in Perth offering either full or partial halal menus.
Beiyrut Restaurant
Tuart Hill
If you want some seriously delicious and authentic Lebanese food you'll want to head straight to Beiyrut. We'd suggest taking a fairly large group because the menu is huge and everything is amazing—including the halal options.
Recipe Restaurant
East Perth
If you're after a taste of Persia, Recipe Restaurant in East Perth is all over it like white on rice. And in huge news, they offer halal menu items.
Istanbul Turkish Restaurant
Fremantle
Istanbul Turkish Restaurant, just off the Freo cafe strip, is another certified halal restaurant. The team here have been serving delicious and authentic Turkish cuisine for over 20 years, so they know a thing or two about making delicious food.
Elie’s Tent
Victoria Park
At Elie's Tent you get a halal dinner and a show. Two for one. Result. While you chow down on your delicious authentic Lebanese food, you’ll be entertained by traditional Middle-Eastern belly dancers.
Sahara Middle Eastern Restaurant
Perth
If you want a bit of variety, then Sahara is your spot. They blend traditional cuisine from several countries across the Middle-East, giving you a very exotic experience indeed. Our hot tip is to order the mansaf—lamb slow cooked in hot yoghurt, and served with a fresh Arabian salad.
Cairo Cafe
Perth
We probably don't need to clarify that Cairo Cafe serves up authentic Egyptian cuisine. The clues were there, weren't they? What you might not know, however, is that this little suburban gem was founded by a group of classmates who all grew up together in Egypt before relocating to the land down under. We're pretty happy they chose to grace Perth with their fresh, authentic and fragrant Egyptian dishes.
PappaRich
Northbridge
PappaRich in Northbridge is one of Perth’s top Malaysian restaurants, and the place to go if you’re in Perth and looking for some authentic, delicious halal Malaysian cuisine.
Chee Tayeb Restaurant
Perth
Chee Tayeb Restaurant on Murray Street is a family owned eatery providing authentic modern Lebanese cuisine. You’ll get top notch service, a unique Lebanese experience and halal menu items.
Indonesia Indah Restaurant
Perth
This Perth eatery offers an authentic menu of Indonesian favourites, made from the freshest herbs, spices and ingredients. Their menu, which is designed for sharing, has a full halal option for lunch and dinner.
Metro Indian Restaurant
Subiaco
Metro, located in the heart of Subi, is a locally loved Indian restaurant with a wide range of authentic dishes and halal options.
Tamarind Cafe
Claremont
Tamarind is a certified halal eatery, and serves up Asian inspired cuisine specialising in traditional Javanese style satay, grilled to perfection over open hardwood charcoal. They also have unique Asian fusion dishes.
Saffron Fine Persian Cuisine
Middle Swan
The authentic Persian restaurant dishes up mouth-watering food like traditional Persian kebabs, with a side of live music and belly dancing on Friday nights.
The Ajrak
Fremantle
The Ajrak in Fremantle is an authentic Pakistani and Indian spot using traditional recipes - they even mill their spices by hand. That’s dedication. There is a huge selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, as well as a full halal menu.

Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 – One Of The Best Taiwanese Beef Noodles In Taipei
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Fri Jan 05 21:36:56 PST 2018
[Taipei] Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 is known to be one of the best Taiwanese beef noodle joints in Taipei, well-known for its spicy soup. This two-level restaurant serves up signature Beef Noodles with tender Australian beef and chewy noodles in a flavourful broth, definitively a winner judging by the line in front of this dining establishment. (The other famous shop in the neighbourhood is 老张牛肉麵店 Lao Zhang Beef Noodles.) I went at about 10:45am and there were about 2-3 people in the line. Thinking that it should be okay if I take a stroll around the neighbourhood, I returned at 11:00am only to see about 30 – 40 people in the queue already. Many of them brought along their luggage or entire families. Lesson learnt: Come early. Yong Kang Beef Noodles was founded back in 1963 by Mr. Cheng who originally from Szechuan in China. After he finished his military duties, Mr. Cheng decided to open a small stall at Yong Kang Street and sell beef noodles. The stall became an instant hit and started to attract both locals and people from China who moved here to Taipei City. After Mr. Cheng retired in the 1970s, the place was handed over to his protégé, Mr. Luo who is the current owner. As for the interior, it has not much changed over the years. There are dozens of tables and they are usually packed with customers. You will also see the counter with a menu to choose from. There is also a tourist-friendly English and Japanese menu with photos. Most of the tables are round and can accommodate up to 6 people. If you come solo or in a pair, you are likely to be seated with other patrons. Their signature dish is the Braised Beef with Noodles in Spicy...

If there’s one thing vegans know a thing or two about, it’s realising you’re three minutes away from being hangry AF because your mates have decided to order pizza. Well, not anymore team, Domino’s have added vegan cheese to their menu and on behalf of these guys—you’re welcome.
Domino’s ran a survey on their Facebook page late last year and the people (you guys) said they wanted vegan cheese. Fast forward to 2018 and it’s now become a delicious reality #peoplepower. Their sauces and bases are already vegan friendly so you can just swap out the cheese for an easy win, plus they’ve upped their game even further with a couple of limited edition specials—vegan avocado veg, vegan spicy trio and even a vegan margherita.
FYI, their garlic bread is also vegan friendly and you better believe we’ll be adding the vegan cheese to this bad boy too (if they’ll let us) because cheesy garlic bread is bae.
For now, they're saying the vegan cheese will only be available for a limited time but if we prove that we need this in our lives, they'll keep it on the menu. For more deets, head here.
Here are all the annoying questions you'll be asked daily if you go vegan.

10 Wellness Trends You’ll Be Seeing In 2018
by Rosie Gregory @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 22 11:00:00 PST 2018
Wellness—no longer a term reserved for the alternative health crew or fitness fanatics. In 2018 wellness is all about accessibility, longevity, future proofing your health and taking genuine care of yourself, holistically. As much for the high-powered CEO as the time pushed mum, these trends indicate a shift towards choosing to nourish the mind, body and spirit to increase energy, revitalise stressed out bodies, hack productivity and move towards a more effective society.
Here are 10 of the wellness trends that will be bringing you to all new levels of healthy and well in the year ahead.
High Tech Plant Food
As plant-based diets become increasingly mainstream, the tech world is responding by bringing their scientific swagger to upgrade, manipulate and advance our veggie ingredients. Whether you're vegan, plant-based or just trying to lift your leafy green intake, this tech isn’t just changing the game, it's creating a whole new frontier, with production techniques set to revolutionise our fresh produce.
From new varieties of nut mylks and non-dairy indulgences (move over smashed avo on toast, avocado ice-cream is coming), to sashimi grade “not tuna” made from tomatoes and “bleeding” vegan burgers. Eating your 2&5 has never been more exciting.
Super Powders And The Rise Of Collagen
The convenience backed trend that began to emerge in 2017 will be fully flourishing in 2018, with super powders making holistic health more accessible than ever before. The real MVP (that’s Most Valuable Powder) will be collagen—one of the cleanest sources of protein, that not only fights back against wrinkles and boosts skin and hair health, but also assists in gut healing.
From collagen peptide to gelatin and bone broths, collagen products are sweeping the popularity ranks. For Australian made and owned brand, Nutra Organics, the expanding knowledge of the health benefits of collagen and gelatin supplements has seen sales triple just within the past five months.
Closely following are adaptogens, helping to boost mental stamina, soothe stress and balance hormones, these ancient herbs will be gaining widespread acceptance making them the new pantry staples. From energy boosting maca, to adaptogenic ashwagandha and antioxidant loaded cacao, there’s no shortage of use for them—whizz them into your smoothies, add to your pancake mix, sprinkle on your porridge, but expect to see super powders everywhere!
Moringa
If you were a big fan of the turmeric and anti-inflammation trend of 2017, then you will be obsessed with Moringa. This natural leaf powder supplement, derived from a small tree found in India, Pakistan and Nepal, has been used for generations in eastern cultures as a traditional remedy and is set to become the biggest superfood of 2018 thanks to its highly powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and tissue protective properties.
The bright green powder is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with protein, iron, Vitamin A, E, C and calcium, which is touted to help fight free-radicals, lower inflammation and protect the liver.
Digital Detox
Taking time to unplug and disconnect from the technological world will rise in priority in 2018. With smartphone addiction becoming a reality and IRL connections shifting up the popularity ranks, expect to see a move in trends to get you to put down the tech and disconnect from the Wi-Fi.
Ironically created to help connect us, technology obsession is now leading to increased stress, anxiety and isolation from constantly being powered up and attached. Digi-detox weekends, switching on the OOO and heading offline for timed periods will become a new norm. A welcome sigh of relief is expected from insta-boyfriends everywhere who can finally eat their food while it's hot.
Self-Care Everyday
It’s time to upgrade from #SelfCareSunday—2018 is all about embracing self-care rituals every day, as we begin to understand that through actively taking care of ourselves, we are better equipped to support our families, friends, colleagues and community. Despite its rep to be all about face masks, this marks a shift to understand that “me-time” isn’t selfish, or a luxury, but a necessity.
Self-care will evolve this year to incorporate healthy everyday rituals that help to keep our minds and body’s balanced, energised and revitalized. First step? Get clearing that schedule and unapologetically unplug.
Digital Fitness
Not satisfied with just taking over our schedules and wardrobes (praise the #athleisure trend), fitness will now be taking over your home with the digital fitness scene and streaming services set to explode in 2018 and beyond. With better technology, access to world-class trainers, and the digital capture of that feeling of being in your fave workout class, all without leaving the comfort of your living room, the fitness business is now globally scaling to reach more people than ever before.
From top international studios offering their own individual streaming services of classes and sessions, to streaming platforms offering an array of workout formats and even live sessions you can tune into, excuses of “you can’t get there” soon fly out the window.
Biohacking
No longer just reserved for the tech crew, we are taking to hacking to a whole new level—to our health. To counteract our, at times, less than optimal healthy lifestyles, biohacking is the way forward to provoke better health.
From the standards of bulletproof coffee spiked with MCT oil, intermittent fasting, ketogenic and paleo diets, expect to see new waves of biohacking with cycle syncing (tracking and hacking your menstrual cycle) and nootropics (supplements that reduce brain fog and stress levels) emerging onto the hacker scene. It’s all about adapting and optimising biology to work better, not harder, for you.
Infra-Red Saunas
While not a new invention, one gaining serious cache in 2018 will be the rise of infra-red saunas. Unlike a traditional sauna, the infra-red variety use infra-red wavelengths to heat the body on a cellular level, rather than blasting warm or steamy air into the space around you.
From athletic recovery, relief of muscular aches and reduced joint pain, to detoxification and relaxation, the holistic, wellness benefits of infrared saunas are bringing in the trend seekers and performance seeking fitness fiends to sweat it out, as they chill out.
Embrace The Spiritual Side
If you think being spiritual is just checking out your horoscope in the weekly mag, expect 2018 to bring a shift to the woo-woo side with a greater exploration of spirituality in modern life. As meditation and mindfulness integrate fully into the mainstream, there will be greater conversation into syncing to lunar cycles, shifts to a higher consciousness and vibrational energy.
The trend doesn’t stop at the expansion of mindful movement centres and turning inwards. Expect to see crystals everywhere, chakra yoga classes, a growth in alternative healing modalities such as Reiki, salt lamps and faux sheepskin rugs in the home décor aisle and sage burning rituals to cleanse energy. It’s all about dialling into the higher realms to manifest and power the year ahead.
Natural Beauty
Not only are we learning what we put inside our body affects our health, but so too does what we put on our body. Natural beauty and skincare will propel forward in 2018 as it climbs towards becoming an industry sector worth $20 million by 2020. The clean, organic products—that you could literally eat—are making their way into our beauty aisles, led by home grown brands Sukin, Mokosh and MooGoo.
All passionately share the message that the skin, our largest organ, absorbs a portion of all we put onto it, which, if packed full on hidden chemicals or “fragrance” can cause havoc on our systems. From natural deodorants (that actually work!) to moisturisers, make up and skincare, no longer will natural beauty have a lingering odd smell, it will be all about non-toxic, high quality and safe ingredients that deliver maximum results.

Bobii Frutii Singapore – Colourful Bubble Tea From Taiwan Opening At The Clementi Mall, 10 Jan 2018
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Thu Jan 04 21:29:43 PST 2018
The Return Of The Taiwanese Bubble Tea craze in Singapore sees old players such as Gong Cha, Singapore brand LiHo and Taiwan’s PlayMade 丸作, all of them with difference in their areas of specialty. Let’s just say Gong Cha is known for their Alisan Milk Foam, LiHo for Cheese drinks (which is now everywhere) and PlayMade 丸作 for their freshly made pearls. Bobii Frutii will be opening its first store in Singapore at The Clementi Mall. I first tried Bobii Frutii 珍珠水果特調 in Taipei which attracted a crowd initially due to its distinct coloured and “Instagram-worthy” layers. Each cup is made using milk, tea and colourful pearls, with no artificial flavourings, man-made essences, creamer or preservatives. The menu in Singapore features a total of 37 drinks in a single cup size and divided into 5 different categories – Tea/Au Lait aka “served with milk” in French ($2.50 – $3.90), Ice Blended ($5.90 – $6.90), Matcha ($4.90 – $6.50), Fruit Tea ($3.90 – $5.90) and Cheese Tea, exclusive to Singapore ($4.50 – $5.90). Pearls aka bobii (Taiwanese slang for tapioca pearls) that are preservative-free come in 3 different flavours: Original ($0.60), Butterfly Pea ($0.90) and Brown Sugar ($0.90), are made in Taiwan and air-flown to Singapore to ensure freshness and consistency. One thing to note, the bobii in each cup is considerably less compared to other competitor brands out there. Apart from their aesthetically pleasing appearance, each of their signature items have funky names that made me wonder what the flavours are, so I gave up on their names and ended up ordering by colours. “Hi, can I have the blue and yellow layered drink?” “Oh, you mean Mermaid’s Tears?” “Ya, that one.” I cried. The names included Don’t Want To Work, Pandora Treasures, Childhood Memory, Green Romance, and Don’t Want...

New pop-up spot Paradicsom offers classic Magyar lecsó stew
Budapest’s street-food revolution has come to District VIII. As you ascend the sleek escalators of Rákóczi tér M4 metro station, you’re within reach of one its pioneers, opened in January 2018: Paradicsom. Referring to both its key ingredient, the humble tomato, and idyllic nature of the venue, Paradicsom forms part of the Somewhereatthebottomoftheriver outlet, between an eSports bar and a design lamp workshop on Német Street. While the main offering at Paradicsom is age-old favorite, lecsó stew, as a pop-up venue it feels as contemporary as its neighbors.
Vegan Chickpea Pasta Salad

The post Vegan Chickpea Pasta Salad appeared first on The Viet Vegan.
This Chickpea Pasta Salad is reminiscent of the tuna pasta salads my mom used to make for me to bring to lunch. Tender, chewy noodles, the occasional crunch from some veggies, flaked chickpeas to mimic flaked tuna, and of course, a creamy and tangy sauce to marry all the flavours together. It’s so simple yet […]

Top 10 HIIT Training Myths Busted
by Louise McDonald @ 12WBT
Thu Dec 21 14:24:00 PST 2017
HIIT training is an intense and super-effective type of training, but as with any popular fitness trend, there are heaps of misconceptions as to how effective it is. Here are 10 common myths debunked: 1. It’s just cardio The purpose of HIIT is to have you working at a high percentage of your maximum heart rate for a short period, then to follow on with a stint of low intensity, and repeat in intervals. This can be applied to many different types of exercise, including weight training and sports. 2. More is better You will need sufficient rest between your workouts for […]

Coffee Libre 커피리브레 – Hidden Award-Winning Cafe At Myeongdong Cathedral, Seoul
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Sun Jan 07 23:14:22 PST 2018
[Seoul] When I needed a good coffee recommendation, food blogger Daniel (yeah, same name) from Seoul Eats took me to Coffee Libre 커피리브레at Hong Dae near Hongik University Station. The thing that makes Coffee Libre stand out from other coffee shops in the city is the fact that the owners are dedicated to coffee. This is from sourcing the best coffee beans in the world, and choosing to have different brewing methods. Established in 2012, Coffee Libre 커피리브레 is an independent coffee shop in Seoul with branches in Yeonnam-dong, Yeongdeung-po, Shinsegae, and Myeongdong. The name of the coffee shop comes from the Spanish word “libre”, which translates to Mexican luchador wrestlers. The icon on the cup did remind me of Jack Black’s character from the Mexican-American sports comedy film Nacho Libre. Coffee Libre grinds beans for every single cup of coffee, and they have participated in dozens of coffee-related events in the country. I have been to 3 different branches of Coffee Libre. Hong Dae’s branch has more indie vibes for coffee aficionados; Time Square has a much bigger space and appeals more to the young; while Myeongdong’s outlet is a hidden spot right in the middle of a tourist hub. This small branch of Coffee Libre in Myeongdong boasts a quite unusual location, as it is situated within the Myeong-dong Cathedral complex. Yes, right in front of the famous church. The interior is simple and cozy with several tables and a long bar. Guests can choose to either drink their coffee indoors or take it to go. They are especially known for sourcing their single-origin coffee beans via fair-trade directly, and obtaining highly regarded CoE (Cup of Excellence) beans as well. As one of the top independent roasters they participate in various coffee-related events in Korea, and top baristas...

Where You Should Travel In 2018 Based On Your Star Sign
by Marina Nazario @ The A List | The Urban List
Tue Jan 09 19:00:00 PST 2018
It’s a new year, and that means a clean slate. This year could be anything, guys. We know you’re already strategically planning where and when to travel, but before you make any destination decisions, let’s see what the stars have to say. Crack open your diary and make room for one of these epic trips in 2018. Because, obviously, if a city is compatible with your zodiac, you have to go there.
Here’s where you should travel in 2018, based on your zodiac sign. Bon voyage!
Aries
Queenstown, New Zealand
If anyone is going to bungee jump off in Queenstown or go zorbing down the hills of Rotorua, it’s you, Aries. You’re pretty freaking fearless and we can totally see you renting a kombi and road-trippin' your way through the North and South Islands of New Zealand. You don’t need much—just some comfortable clothes, your confidence and an optimistic attitude. Oh, and make sure you come back alive.
Taurus
Utah, USA
Taurus, fly on over the American Southwest and explore the beautiful and underrated state of Utah. You’ll appreciate that it’s pretty easy to travel through—especially if you visit during April-July for glorious weather and Bucket List adventure out the wazoo. Be sure to check out the mind-boggling beauty of Zion National Park, Antelope Canyon and Arches National Park. Pro tip: One of the world’s most epic slip ‘n slides opens on an Olympic ski slope during the (American) summer months. If you don’t do it, we will.
Gemini
Djibouti, Africa
Oh Gemini, we know that you get bored easily. You can’t be bothered seeing another city with the same old H&M’s and Ralph Laurens. So you need somewhere unexplored. You need to go somewhere like Djibouti, a tiny corner of the world in East Africa. Lonely Planet reckons this is the #4 country to visit in 2018. We know you’re intrigued. And good news, there’s plenty to do in Djibouti. Whale shark diving or hike extinct volcanoes? Visit the salt lakes or the canyons?! You’re curious, like George. Go out and explore.
Cancer
Tokyo, Japan
Take your highly imaginative personality onto a plane, then take that plane straight to Japan. You need to let your creativity soar in a country that’s booming with color. Tokyo moves quick, but you can handle it. You, of all people, lurrrrv food, and Japan is the perfect place to stuff your face with all sorts of goodness. So slurp on ramen and nom on REAL sushi. You haven’t had a modern restaurant experience until your meal slips out of a machine #onlyinjapan.
Leo
Cape Town, South Africa
Leo, you might not like taking holidays, but if you muster up a speck of wanderlust you're going to go somewhere that’s worth your time. And in 2018, it’s South Africa. (And no, not just ‘cause your star sign is a lion). You’re energetic, fearless and up for anything. Shark cage dive with Great Whites, visit the duck army winery and go on a safari. Simba wants to meet you.
Virgo
Toronto, Canada
Virgo, step away from the office and onto a plane to Canada. You need a break! Toronto is calling your name. It’s a clean and artsy city, and Drake is from there—so, like, yeah. Go to the top of the CN Tower and splurge on a meal at the revolving restaurant. The city is thriving with music and art, so why don’t you exercise the right side of your analytical brain and let loose. Pro tip: if you can, catch a Raptor game in Jurassic Park (just Google it).
Libra
Cinque Terre, Italy
Libra, you of all people know that balance equals a lot of walking plus heaps of pizza. That’s why you should go to the Cinque Terre in 2018. Being around friendly and freakishly attractive Italians meshes well with your gracious and social attitude. You like sharing and bringing balance to your surroundings, so gather some peeps and enjoy delicious antipasto and vino, plus a few clifftop hikes.
Scorpio
Lahaul, India
ALLLL the way in the tip-top corner of India is the remote region of Lahaul and Spiti. If you haven’t heard of this place, look it up. Bet you didn’t think it would look like that! Small villages, large mountains, medieval monasteries and brilliant blue lake water is practically untouched by mass tourism, according to Lonely Planet. Use your resourcefulness to your advantage and navigate your way through this part of the world in 2018. There will be language barriers, exotic food and vibrant culture. Good thing you're up for a challenge, right?
Sagittarius
Santiago, Chile
Gear up for an adventure, Sag! You need to visit Lonely Planet’s number one destination of 2018: Chile! This is the year to do it, because the country is celebrating its 200th anniversary of independence, so there will be plenty of festivities to go around, especially in its capital, Santiago. Seriously, this country will keep you on your toes. You can explore one of the driest deserts on earth or freeze your butt off navigating your way through the glacial fields. Raise a glass of pisco sour and let’s go!
Capricorn
Mykonos, Greece
Turn off your emails and give your never-ending to-do list a break. It’s time to let loose in Greece, Capricorn! This country provides a great combination of history, relaxing on the beach and partying till the sun comes up (especially on Mykonos—AMIRIGHT?). Take a load off and come back to the office with an envious Mediterranean tan. You deserve it.
Aquarius
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Aquarius, you’re a humanitarian, and San Juan needs your help. It got hit hard by Hurricane Maria and tourism will only help the country move forward. Go to San Juan in 2018 and explore this beautiful, Caribbean island. Hang out with the locals, eat your weight in Arroz con dulce and dance the night away in one of the crazy-good nightclubs. Heck, we’ll come with you.
Pisces
Seville, Spain
Get out of bed and put on your dancing shoes, Pisces, it’s time to do the flamenco around Seville. Good thing you're go-with-the-flow (like most Spaniards) because it will be easy for you to make friends here. At home, you like your alone time, so why not challenge yourself and make this a solo trip. Meet people (maybe the love of our life), dance, eat good food and admire Seville's beautiful architecture. Let loose, Pisces, you gentle thing.
Now that you know where to go in 2018, the stars will tell you which dog to get.

Finally! It’s The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide To Essential Oils
by Mikaela Burnett @ The A List | The Urban List
Wed Jan 17 10:31:00 PST 2018
Essential Oils are fast becoming THE most talked about subject, but why the heck is this you ask? What is so special about these delicious smelling oils? Well, we’re glad you asked. It turns out there’s a reason they’re more popular than Kylie Jenner’s lips. We live in quite the chemical shiz-storm nowadays people.
Essential oils are not only 100% natural, BUT they are 100% awesome. There are loads of them and they have more uses than Kim K has Twitter followers. And you can use them to replace almost everything you’re currently using. Which is amaze! Because being healthy is WAY more fun than being not healthy, right? Plus, if you have kiddies you'll feel way more chilled knowing that there’s nothing toxic around. As we said there are a ridiculous amount of oils available, but because ain’t nobody got the time to read about all of them right now we just picked our top five for you...
Lavender
This baby is so much more than just an old people smell, it’s actually human catnip. And I’m sure we could all do with some catnip (wine only does SO much). You can use it to help you have the best sleep of your life! Pop a few drops in a diffuser with some Frankincense on your bedside table. Or if you don’t have a diffuser try putting a couple of drops on the underside of your pillow.
Lavender is awesome for bites, burns and pimples! For bites, try mixing a few drops with tea tree oil and peppermint oil. And if you’re somebody who burns themselves often leave a bottle in the fridge to apply as ASAP as possible to the part of your skin that’s melting. If you’re stressing the eff out or your anxiety is going through the bloody roof try using lavender as a way to calm yourself down. You can take it internally or just rub a few drops into your temples and the back of your neck. Or try mixing it with a carrier oil and blackmailing your significant other into giving you a full body massage.
Lavender oil is an absolute life hack if you have a small teething terrorist. Mix a few drops of Lavender and Frankincense with a carrier oil in a glass roller bottle and roll the blend along their jawline. You can also roll this blend on the bottom of their feet when they go full Toad Mode (also try rolling it over your whole entire body when TM is happening... because what a perfect moment to be comatose).
Frankincense
Ahh Franky, the King of oils. This guy is good for pretty much every problem in the world. Anxiety? Franky. Bad skin? Franky. That annoying guy that just WON’T get the hint? We’re not sure, but Frankincense could be the answer. Frankincense is really bloody cool! It has the power to enter a cell and decide whether or not it’s worth saving. If it is, it will renovate that cell until it’s good as new. And if it isn’t, it will just get rid of it. Imagine all of the nice shiny cells you could have! If it’s good enough for Baby Jesus then it’s good enough for us.
It works wonders for troubled skin! Especially if you have any scarring left over from being an awkward 15-year-old. Just mix a couple of drops with a carrier oil (we recommend either fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil) and massage into a freshly cleansed face twice a day. You will usually notice a dramatic difference within a day! Which is always a fun time. You can also try applying a drop to your thumb and pressing it to the roof of your mouth. Why? Because the roof of your mouth acts as a direct route to your Pituitary Gland which (long story short) controls most of our hormone functions. And Franky loves to do nice things to your hormones.
Massage into sore joints, limbs and appendages for incredible pain relief and repair. Frank is renowned for his inflammatory properties and is often used to support the symptoms of Arthritis. Frankincense can be used to help relieve anxiety, depression and mood swings. So just get that bottle and sniff the heck outta it.
Lemon
When life gives you lemon oil you say, “Hey thanks life, that’s a really nice thing you did. I can do heaps with this! You da best man”. And then you can try these things with it...cleaning! Not often is that word used with such enthusiasm! But lemon oil is the bomb-diggity to clean with. In a glass spray bottle add a 15 drops of lemon oil, half a cup of white vinegar and fill the rest with distilled water. Replacing your chemical-filled cleaning products with homemade essential oil ones is not only cheaper but it’s better for your health (like, HEAPS better). You can also add a few drops to your water every day (in a glass water bottle only because the essential oils like to eat plastic because it’s full of nasty stuff). Lemon oil naturally cleanses the body and aids with digestion.
Lemon oil is an excellent air cleaner and purifier. So try adding some drops to your bin, in your diffuser or just on the kitchen bench to get rid of any smells. We LURVE the way this smells! LURVE. If you accidentally leave your washing in the machine for ten days without putting it on the line (don’t act like you haven’t done this before/every week), adding a few drops to the end of the wash cycle will completely get rid of that smell of neglect and laziness. If you are love the flavour of lemon try adding a few drops when whipping up a smoothie, bliss balls, cakes, sautéed veggies, cakes or cakes. We prefer cakessss.
Peppermint
The smell of Christmas and mouthwash! Need we say more?! Good for a lot of things but not so great for putting near eyeballs and other balls...or lady flowers. Here’s some places you CAN put it and ways to use it say “See ya never” to those headaches!
Rub some of the oil onto your temples (which BTW are probably further back from your eyes then you think...we recommend Googling where your temples live) and even a little bit behind your ears and the back of your neck. Peppermint oil is pretty much the opposite to Lavender. Instead of being human catnip it’s like having a cup of coffee injected into your bloodstream. So, if you’re needing a little pick-me-up rub some on yourself topically, sniff straight from the bottle, put in a diffuser or try adding a few drops to the bottom of your shower to realllllllly open those eyeballs up of a morning.
If you or your child is suffering from a fever try rubbing some peppermint oil (diluted with a carrier oil for children) into the soles of your/their feet. You’ll be amazed at how quickly that fever drops! If you’re into oil pulling (which you should be because it’s fab) try adding a few drops of peppermint to your coconut oil! Your mouth will feel super minty fresh without all of the yucky harsh chemicals. Suffer from sinus issues or have a cold/flu? Peppermint has amazing natural antiviral properties. Put some in a diffuser or massage a few drops onto your chest with a carrier oil.
Orange
Orange you glad we didn't miss this one? Orange you wishing you didn’t read this far? *crickets* Rough crowd. Anyway let’s just get straight into it! With just one sniff of this oil and you’ll be THAT guy who is super positive and happy and ugh... THAT Guy. Orange is an incredibly uplifting and motivating smell. If you couple it with peppermint you’ll be able to clean the whole damn world you’ll be so motivated!
Obviously orange is a delicious flavour (duh, obviously) so why not try adding it to water, soda water, treats or smoothies? Sticky surfaces shake in their boots when they know orange oil is coming their way. And we all know how fond sticky surfaces are of their boots (and how good orange oil is at making them disappear).
There are hundreds of amazing oils with incredible qualities! These are literally just the tip of the iceberg (it’s a really bloody big iceberg). You can thank us laters!

Love A Drink? Here’s Why You Don’t Need To Give it Up
by Stephanie King @ 12WBT
Tue Dec 05 21:42:09 PST 2017
Thankfully, it turns out, you don’t have to give up that occasional drink in order to lose weight. We’ll cheers to that! Multiple scientific reports have analysed the actual effects of alcohol on our body weight, and concluded that light-to-moderate alcohol intake is not associated with weight gain. Just to clarify, this means one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men – any more is considered ‘heavier’ drinking and is more related to weight gain. You shouldn’t have to put your social life on hold in order to reach your weight loss goals; in fact, […]

2018 Has Gifted Us With Gin And Tonic Teabags
by Catherine Blake @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 15 19:59:00 PST 2018
Starting your day with a G&T used to be the sign of a troubled drama queen living beyond her means, but now it means exactly the same thing except after she’s run out of ice cubes. London's famed Fortnum & Mason, a spendthrift’s haven of tchotchkes, picnic baskets and artisanal chocolates, have released their own range of gin and tonic teabags for the man or woman who has (quite literally) everything.
Startlingly, this fancy tisane contains absolutely no alcohol whatsoever. ‘What’s the point?’ I hear you cry and to that I say pipe the goddamn hell down because some of us drove here. With a lack of alcoholic compounds, the brew crew at F&M got crafty; taking juniper and coriander and fennel and all the other herbaceous flavours that go into making gin, then mixed them into a base of top quality green tea. The infusion is then finished off with a wee bit of lemon balm and some dried cucumber and lime for a refreshing finish. Does your morning cuppa have a garnish? Didn’t think so.
As for packaging, do you think they come in the same old porous paper bags as your ordinary breakroom tea? Heavens no! Just when this luxurious brew couldn’t get any fancier Fortnum & Mason have decided to tuck the individual portions into the tea cabinet’s equivalent of a silken negligee.
Choice Fortnum & Mason products can be found at DJ's, but if they’re fresh out of gin and tonic you can pick up a box of 15 via Fortnum and Mason.

Coles Is Selling Cheese And Vegemite Sausages
by Anna Franklyn @ The A List | The Urban List
Tue Jan 16 23:10:00 PST 2018
It's been a big six months for Vegemite, with their questionable icy poles launching last December, cheese and Vegemite pies landing in Australia last July and a Vegemite burger popping up in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney just today, and it looks like Coles wants in on the Vegemite action.
Coles has released their lamb, cheese and Vegemite sausages which are, according to packaging, perfect for Australia Day—well played Coles, well played. These babies are made from 100% Aussie lamb and a good dose of Vegemite, because who doesn't want their sausages with a little added yeast?!
In all seriousness though, we already know cheese and Vegemite is one of the best flavour combos to grace the planet, so we reckon we might give these a try.
ICYMI, you can also get gin and tonic teabags now.

The specialty is the Hainanese Chicken Xiao Long Bao ($6.80) which incorporates the Singapore signature dish of Hainanese Chicken Rice into their famed Chinese dumplings. Mr R Drinks 雨田先生手冲饮品吧 – Instagrammable Fox And Rose Milk Tea, At Zhongxiao East Road Taipei
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Sun Jan 07 22:13:11 PST 2018
[Taipei] Instagram has certainly changed consumer habits and how coffee shops keep themselves abreast in a very challenging market. Mr R Drinks 雨田先生手冲饮品吧 at Zhongxiao East Road got into the social media limelight with its very photogenic drinks of Rose Milk and Marsh Milk Tea aka Mr Fox Milk Tea. Sometimes, you get other animals on the drink. Do not discount Mr R Drinks, or “Yu Tian Xian Sheng” as another one of those just riding on the Instagram trend. The barista-owner is serious about his coffee, importing coffee beans from various parts of the world, offering hand-drips and takeaway cups. Until he was overwhelmed with orders. When I visited, the shop had a limited menu of Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10), Rose Milk, Strawberry Milk and Baileys Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Apple Cider (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Umeshu Soda (NT$140, SGD$6.30), Pikachu Soda (NT$65, SGD$2.90) and… Miso Soup (NT$90, SGD$4). As this is a one-man-show operation and lines can be long, every customer is limited to buying just one cup. During peak hours, you have to get a ticket first before queuing. The barista was seen frothing and making his drinks cup by cup, so wait can be rather long. Each cup took at least 5 to 10 minutes to make. I ordered the Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10) only because I was intrigued at the cute fox on the drink. Like how it got there? However, I was slightly disappointed when he handed me a hot frothy cup of milk tea on one hand, a fox on the other enclosed in a plastic packaging, and told me to put it on myself. I see. There wasn’t any 3D latte art involved. For the Rose Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80) drink though, he helped to carefully place the rose ‘biscuit’ made of egg white...

Wakanui Grill Dining – Steakhouse Using Meats From New Zealand And Cooking Techniques Of Japan, At Marina One
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Sat Jan 06 07:29:53 PST 2018
On the 4th level of the rather futuristic looking (like off a Hollywood set) of Marina One lies two glass capsules. One of them contains Wakanui Grill Dining, an 86-seater restaurant which features steak and lamb from New Zealand. Wakanui, a New Zealand term meaning “to canoe over the land of plenty”’ is a grill restaurant concept that showcases the best available meats from the country. Its first outlet opened in Tokyo in 2011, and its success soon meant the opening of its second outlet there, focusing on lamb chops. Therefore, you could also find some Japanese influences in the menu over in Singapore’s outlet. The stars and the essence of the restaurant are therefore the New Zealand Ocean Beef and Wakanui Spring Lamb, which are grilled over Japan-sourced Binchotan charcoal in the centrally-placed, open kitchen. Starters included Neck Clam Soup ($12), Steamed Green Lip New Zealand Mussels ($22), Hot Smoked Salmon ($24), Seasonal Hassun ($32), Kikorangi Blue Cheese Caesar ($22) and Green Salad ($16) I was recommended by the service manager the Wakanui Spring Lamb Chop ($8) as the starter, and it turned out to be quite exceptional. The lamb had intense flavour and retained its natural juiciness, without the usual gaminess lamb would have. In fact, this would count as one of the most tender lamb chops I ever had. The Wakanui Spring Lamb are raised for approximately six months on the lush and highly nutritious spring pastures, with meat then aged for around four weeks until reaching its peak flavour. This process would ensure that the optimum flavour and texture of the lamb can be enjoyed year-round. In terms of the Ocean Beef, there were choices of 21 Days Dry-aged Bone-in-Ribeye ($199 for 1000g), Ribeye Cut ($79 for 350g, $109 for 500g), or Sirloin ($72 for 350g,...

Our Top Picks At This Year’s Fringe World Festival
by Emma Pegrum @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 15 14:16:00 PST 2018
There really is no better time to enjoy everything Perth has to offer than during Fringe, when our sunny Perth days turn into beautiful, balmy nights spent being wowed by entertainers from around the globe. Fringe World is back in 2018 to bring us one blissful month of buzzing bars and pop-up venues, dazzling shows, flowing drinks and good old belly laughs.
We know there’s a tonne of shows on offer at Fringe and, being the stand-up guys that we are (pun intended), we thought we’d put together a handy little list of our top picks so you can hone in on the best shows at Fringe World in 2018.
The Sell-Outs
Club Swizzle
Cabaret/Circus
This brand new show from cabaret extraordinaires La Soiree—who have sold out three Fringe seasons in a row with their sassy cabaret and acrobatics that defy the laws of physics—is coming to light up our new fave pop-up The Ice Cream Factory. You might even get a drink poured from someone who is literally suspended in the air. We think this one’s going to knock your absolute socks off!
Hot Brown Honey
Theatre/Cabaret
This one’s for the women. Hot Brown Honey, touted as one of the most exciting shows hitting this year’s festival, features a host of powerful and talented First Nations women from different international backgrounds who are smashing stereotypes and having a damn good time while doing it! From the producers behind Briefs, you know it’s going to be cheeky yet sophisticated, and include some mind-boggling theatrics.
Briefs: Close Encounters
Circus/Cabaret
If you see nothing else for the entire month of Fringe World, see this. The boys at Briefs blew us away last year with their night of mischief—think disco meets ‘boylesque’ meets circus—and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with this brand new show, Close Encounters. Expect crazy aerials, incredible artistry and ‘warped speed strippers’—brace yourselves, people.
Djuki Mala
Dance
Hailing all the way from Arnhem Land, the Djuki Mala boys sure know how to put on a show. Incorporating moves from their traditional culture with contemporary renditions of disco faves, the show was a sell-out last year and we are pretty sure it will be again. Entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny and heartfelt at the same time, this is a must-see!
Club Briefs
Circus/Cabaret
This fast-paced show brings together a selection of guests from across Fringe World for a night of disco dancing, circus and incredible feats of physical theatre. These guys are blowing stereotypes to bits at Club Briefs with their stellar showmanship and we guarantee you’ll have a damn fun night hanging out with them.
Returning Favourites
Comedy Hypnotist Matt Hale: Mindfoolness
Cabaret/Comedy
If you want to seriously LOL at a family member or friend, take them to this show and get them up on stage. Alternatively, if you want to walk out of a show feeling like you just slept for a week, take yourself and volunteer to participate! Matt Hale’s ‘Mindfoolness’ is as tasteful as hypnotism shows come and will have you in stitches as well as in awe of the unreal things unfolding before you. Go and see it!
Cabaret Consultations
Cabaret/Comedy
If it’s been a while since you went for a checkup, make sure you go see Dr Ahmed in his follow up to last year’s sold out ’Doctor in the House’: Cabaret Consultations. Looking at the make-up of doctors and the human dilemmas they face, this show’s going to be musical, visceral, and pretty darn funny we assume. You know what they say—laughter is the best medicine, so you’d better book your appointment.
Divas: All Male Revue
Cabaret/Music
Ever wondered what it would be like if Adele, Liza Minelli, Madonna and Amy Winehouse were all alive at the same time? Well, if you go see this show, you won’t have to wonder anymore! Presented by Perth locals Proud Entertainment Group, the superstar divas will dazzle and impress as they impersonate and portray all your favourite celebs from throughout the ages. It’s a no-brainer.
TRIAGE! A Nursing Cabaret: Discharged
Cabaret/Comedy
Back after last year’s blockbuster tour, Triage! is back to translate the secret language that nurses have been speaking for years for our entertainment. Join the medical madness as this brand new show makes a world debut!
F**K Tinder
Comedy/Stand-Up
If you’re single and like to laugh, this show is for you. Let Chris Henry be your wingman with his hilarious jokes and bizarre banter, all in the name of getting single people ready to mingle. He’ll provide the conversation, you just have to take care of the good looks and charm.
(NOT) The Bachelor Live On Valentine’s Day Hosted By Luke Bolland
Comedy/Stand-Up

It’ll be one of those show’s that leaves you uncontrollably laughing while shaking your head and looking around at your mates going ‘ohh-ma-gaaahd’. Get a ticket, period.
All The Rage
Comedy/Stand-Up
Visit the funny side of anger with Claire Hooper as she returns to Perth to deliver this comedy show inspired by the irrational and unjustified anger we all have in common—that which is directed at our mothers. If you love celebrity gossip, or just love a good laugh, be sure to catch our very own Luke Bolland spinning uncensored yarns about his time spent among the A-listers at this unmissable stand-up show. We’re most looking forward to his stories about Will Smith, and anything that’s advertised with redacted information…
A Different Class
Comedy/Stand-Up
Ah, Perth people love a bit of good ol’ fashion class warfare—the humorous kind, of course. Catch this show to see it at it’s finest, as the world’s of Grant from rural Scotland and Nic from Leafy Leederville collide in what’s sure to be a spectacularly funny display of banter.

Just stop by and see it!

Free & Community Events/Music
If you’re anything like us, you probably always forget that Fringe also happens outside of Northbridge. Like, it happens everywhere. Get us there now!
Leedypalooza—Unfair Day

A place where everyone is ‘most unwelcome’ to ‘not enjoy’ this very ‘unfair day’ in Leederville. Featuring ‘unlucky dips’, ‘bad family portraits’ and ‘misfortune cookies’, this is a street party with a twist. Perfect for introducing the fam to Fringe or perusing the shops while enjoying the buzz of Fringe all around.

10 Places You Wish You Were Instead Of At Your Desk RN
by Shannon Coward @ The A List | The Urban List
Thu Jan 11 11:00:00 PST 2018
Welcome to 2018. We bet you're wondering why the hell you're sitting at your desk right now, as your other (some might say, smarter) colleagues took an extra week to lounge around eating the last of the leftovers, or to swan off overseas to top up their tan. We feel you. The real world has rolled back around—and it feels remarkably like work in 2017...
Instead of doing actual work, spend your precious brain space fantasising of the 10 places you wish you were instead at your desk RN.
#1. Whitehaven Beach
Australia
If there’s anything that screams perfect daydream material, it’s sitting on 98% silica sand while the crystal clear ocean laps at your feet. The incredible Whitehaven Beach, located a short boat ride from Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays Queensland, has all your tropical island dreams covered and then some with its mind-boggling beauty and location on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. There’s a reason this stunning natural wonder is plastered across every Australian tourism campaign and it really needs to be seen to be believed. Plus, you could totally combine your trip to Whitehaven with a stay at luxe accommodation on nearby Hamilton Island for the ultimate island escape. Throw in a palm leaf and we’re sold.
#2. Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia
A hidden gem more than worthy of a shout out, Croatia’s Plitvice Lake National Park is a nature-lover’s dream come true. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice Lakes National Park marks the point where 16 crystal-esque lakes flow into each through a series of waterfalls and cascades. An 18km wooden footbridge meanders through the water and butterflies do their thing all over the heavily-forested area. The water is so turquoise you’ll find yourself questioning whether they secretly dyed it and if you visit in winter, you might just find an ice-covered wonderland that would make for one sick ‘gram picture. Plitvice Lakes might also be as close as you’ll get to steeping onto the set of a real life Disney movie. Talk about magical AF.
#3. Gion
Japan
Located in Kyoto, Japan’s cultural hub and former capital, Gion is a must-see on any Japanese adventure. Referred to informally as the geisha district, Gion is a gorgeous slice of the Japan of ages past, nestled smack bang in the middle of a bustling, thriving city that effortlessly blends modern and traditional. Think wooden buildings, winding alleyways, traditional gift shops and the chance to spot a geisha or maiko (a geisha’s apprentice) making their way between appointments at the myriad teahouses dotting the district. Gion is also home to a number of sights, including the famous Kiyomizu-dera temple which offers to-die-for views over Kyoto, if you can’t get your fill just by wandering the stone pathways. BRB, looking up when the next flight leaves for Japan.
#4. The Alhambra
Spain
Topping many a “things you have to see before you die” list, the Alhambra is, well, actually something you have to see before you die. Let’s just say, it makes sitting at your desk sound pretty dang boring. Drawing heavily on its Arabic ancestry, the Alhambra is a fortress complex located in Granada that manages to blend historical significance with stunning architectural brilliance in all the right ways. To start with, the Alhambra offers killer views over the city of Granada and the surrounding meadows. It was built primarily in the 13th century when the first king of the Nasrid dynasty decided to make the fortress the royal residence. It’s from this period that much of the architectural elements –including wooden filigree archways and that iconic central fountain – that make the Alhambra so gorgeous are from. Oh and did we mention that the aim of the architects designing the Alhambra was to cover every single space with decoration, no matter how big or small said space was. Leave work early, head to the airport, fly to Spain, go to the Alhambra, thank us later.
#5. Edinburgh
Scotland
Ah Scotland, we might just have a tiny crush on you after binge-watching Outlander on Netflix. Which is why we just had to put Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city and voted the most walkable city in the U.K. (take that, London), on this list. Edinburgh is home to many a cultural monument, including the perfectly medieval Edinburgh Castle and the Museum of Edinburgh - which just so happens to be located inside a 16th-century house. If you’re more the type to emerge after the sun has gone down, spend your time exploring the haunted alleyways of Mary King’s Close or hit up the local pub for the best whisky you’ll ever taste. Just don’t forget to head out of town and climb Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that also offers gorgeous views over the city below. Ugh, why can’t we be working in Scotland right now.
#6. Skaftafell National Park
Iceland
And here we were thinking that the rock formations of Ireland’s Giants Causeway were impressive when Skaftafell National Park came onto the scene and blew us all away. Located in gorgeous Iceland, Skaftafell is the epicentre of the largest national park in Europe, Vatnajokull National Park, and lies on the southern edge of the breathtaking Vatnajokull Glacier. The park is a land of contrasts, promising you the chance to see everything from active volcanoes to glaciers to flat, sandy plains to glacier rivers – all in the same place. Skaftafell is also home to the Kristinartindar Peaks, a dramatic rock formation from which a waterfall plummets one metre into the lush park below. And that’s all before we get to the variety of hiking trails that wind through the 5000 square kilometres of natural beauty that the park claims as its own. Psh, who needs a job anyway, if you need us we’ll be adventuring in Iceland.
#7. Old Havana
Cuba
Okay, okay, so the pinnacle of chilly northern wandering isn’t really your thing. What about the colourful, bustling, tropical flair of Old Havana, in Cuba? Old Havana is the second most populated borough of modern Havana and is contained within the original Havana city walls. It is also the best placed to be completely immersed in the Havana of long ago. This is a Havana where rumba music floats through cobbled streets, where narrow lanes meander past Cuban-Baroque-meets-Art-Nouveau buildings and where the locals sip coffee and chat like they’ve been doing for many a-year. In other words, it’s pretty wanderlust inducing. Stay in a hotel that once played host to Winston Churchill, explore the brightly hued Plaza Vieja or spend the day exploring Havana’s revolutionary past at Museo de la Ciudad. Whatever you choose, it’s got to be better than staring gloomily out the window at all the not-Old Havana you’re surrounded by. Yes, you can thank us later.
#8. Banff National Park
Canada
Located in the iconic Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park and is home to some breathtaking examples of that alpine beauty we all know and love about Canada. Lake Louise, a turquoise pool of pure postcard perfect beauty, serves as the park’s main jumping off point before you move on to the too-pretty-to-be-real Sunshine Meadows (the name, guys, the name) or the jagged peaks of the Icefields Parkway. To help with painting the picture of how freaking incredible Banff National Park is, imagine that scene in The Sound of Music when Maria is singing her heart out to the rolling green hills around her. Banff makes that scenery look like your attempt at Pictionary after a few too many drinks. So, what are you waiting for?
#9. Chiang Mai
Thailand
Chiang Mai is a beacon when it comes to sought after travel destinations at the moment but the temple city of Thailand is attracting so much buzz for a very good reason. Serving as the hub of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is the perfect place to kick back and get some much needed R&R while remaining in close proximity to activities galore. Pick from one of the many temples peeking out from behind every corner, thanks to the city’s position as the former seat of the Lanna kingdom, or spend your time wandering the backstreets and sampling the many flavours of Thai cuisine. Did someone say authentic pad Thai and grilled pork in banana leaf? Drool. Uh yeah, you can totally get away with chucking a sickie for a whole week (or four). We’ll see you at the airport.
#10. Ggantija
Malta
An underappreciated hidden gem good for more than just filming locations for a bunch of hit TV shows (Game of Thrones, anyone?), Malta is well-worth an addition to any perpetual wander-lusting daydreams. Malta, an island located between Malta and the North African coast, is home to a number of historic sites that remain as evidence of its former rulers, including the Romans, Moors, French and British. The most famous of these has to be Ggantija, a temple complex on the Mediterranean Island of Gozo that is older than the pyramids of Egypt. They are also the world’s second oldest existing manmade religious structures, losing out only to Gobekli Tepe in Turkey. You can actually wander through the ruins of the complex, marvelling at the ingenuity of construction from before society was really a thing. Getting to explore the almost-oldest structure in the world AND having the chance to live your best life on a Mediterranean island? Sign us the heck up!

Top Dup Is Pumping Out Smashed Avo Doughnuts This Weekend
by Anna Franklyn @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 15 18:37:00 PST 2018
ICYMI, Top Dup is doing an epic #topdup50in50 project this year where they'll be launching a limited edition doughnut each week for 50 weeks. A lot of them will be collaborations with other Perth legends, like the doughnut cake burger they made with Baked 180 last year, or the chunk-fetti buttercream bar they made with Get Chunky, while others will just be all sorts of crazy delicious.
They kicked things off last week with a ridiculously drool-worthy Tim Tam stuffed doughnut, which they are bringing back this week from Wednesday to Sunday. That's how good it was!
But the doughnut that's got everyone in The Urban List office talking is the Avo Toast Nut—a savoury smashed avo doughie. Say what now?! Think smashed avo—complete with feta, lemon juice, herbs and spices—stuffed inside Top Dup's signature brioche doughnut and topped with toast crumbs, a slice of mini toast and sundried tomato.
There's really only one way to find out if you're into or not, so get down to Top Dup this week and give it a whirl. YOLO.
Need something to listen to on the drive there? This is the latest true crime podcast you need in your life.

Everywhere You Need To Eat In Adelaide
by Chloe Sputore @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 22 19:45:00 PST 2018
After spending two months of my life in Adelaide this year I’ve got a bone to pick with anyone who thinks Adelaide is not one of the coolest cities in Australia. Not only is it home to some stunning scenery, one of the best wine regions in the world and some extremely lovely people, the food scene is ridiculous.
In my time there I wasn’t even able to scratch the surface of what’s to offer, and I eat out a lot, believe me! But I was able to uncover the absolute must-visit restaurants, bars and cafes. And yes, you’ll need more than a week to experience all of the greatness served up in Australia’s most southern state, my friend!
Here is everywhere you need to eat in Adelaide.
Argo
In all my time in Adelaide I never met a person who didn’t like Argo and it’s no surprise because their menu is the epitome of variety. With two locations, one in the city and one in leafy Norwood, you’ll feel good about eating at Argo thanks to the quality meals they whip up on the daily—think smashed avo with nitrate free Barossa bacon, nut and gluten free vegan waffles and juices to cure any number of ailments. Allow yourself a decent amount of time because the menu will take you 15 minutes to read and then it’ll take you another 30 minutes to decide which of the 10 plus hot chocolates, smoothie bowls or burgers you’ll be enjoying. There is no way to visit Adelaide and go to Argo just once, trust me!
Africola
Hands down one of the best restaurants in Adelaide, Africola puts a modern spin on African cuisine and it’s so popular you’re going to need to make a booking in advance. Opt for the feed me menu and let the chef show you a good time with their cauliflower steak covered in tahini sauce and spiced butter, crispy eggplant served with chilli and shallot jam, peri peri chicken, and cool WA pipis in fermented chilli and garlic. Regardless of how stuffed you are, dessert is not optional—you’ll roll home, but you’ll roll home happy.
Gin Long Canteen
You haven’t been to Adelaide unless you’ve tried Gin Long’s salt and pepper eggplant. This super cool Asian bar in North Adelaide is oh so popular with the locals and we think it has a thing or two to do with their winning cocktail menu. We’re talking tamarind gin longs, Henricks, lychee and cucumber and lemongrass martinis. Food-wise, there’s no way to be disappointed, but the very exciting beef salad, vego yellow curry, netted spring rolls and really slow braised pork belly are bloody good.
Pizza E Mozzarella Bar
Adelaide does good pizza, and one of the best is Pizza e Mozzarella Bar in the CBD. Traditionalists when it comes to pizza making, the crew here hand stretch their dough and let it ferment for 48 hours resulting in extremely digestible, delicious pizza bases. Top menu picks include the calabrese with nduja hot salami and chilli and the napolitana buffalo mozzarella.
Nordburger
Adelaide’s version of Shake Shack, need I say more? I’m going to anyway. With four stores across town, Nordburger serves hamburgers, fried chicken, tater tots, and wait for it, FROZEN CUSTARD. Convinced? Thought so!
Orana
AKA Gourmet Traveller’s Restaurant of the Year. So yes, a visit to Orana is a must! Meaning welcome in some Aboriginal dialects, the staff at Orana will make you feel extremely welcome in this intimate restaurant perched above the city’s east side. Serving a native Australian-inspired degustation with casual flair, opt for the longer dinner tasting menu and enjoy up to 20 courses, kicking off with some potato damper that you cook on coals at your table.
Sushi Planet
It’s not often that sushi joints are welcoming of vegetarians and vegans, but Sushi Planet serves up platters dedicated to plant eaters. Their mango nigiri is a must, whether you’re vegetarian or not. The menu is extensive, so order a few platters (and shochus) and get stuck in. Don’t be turned away by the location, Sushi Planet is definitely worth a trip to the city’s western side.
Singapore House
Ten minutes from the city in Frewville on your way to the Adelaide Hills, Singapore House had me weak at the knees. Their salt and vinegar eggplant, beef rendang, crispy soft shell crab and roti canai will likely produce the same reaction on you as well. Make a booking so you’re not disappointed.
Midnight Spaghetti
A newbie on the Adelaide Italian scene, Midnight Spaghetti brings with it a whole lot of laid-back charm and a flippin’ good value “spaghettaboutit” chef’s menu. They’ve got all the good South Australian wine on the drinks menu, as well as some regional Italian drops, negronis, spritz’ and bellinis. Plus, they’re open ‘til 3pm, so if you’re struggling with jet lag, they’ve got your food cravings covered.
Lantern By Nu
Nu Suandokmai, alumni of Gin Long and a number of other Adelaide top spots, heads up Asian sensation Lantern by Nu, tucked off Selby Street in the CBD. The betel leaves are a great starter, the top yum soup served in a boiling hot clay pot will soothe your soul and the pad Thai is legit. What more could you want?
Tony Tomatoes
A North Adelaide gem, Tony Tomatoes is cool, unfussy and bloody good. Select the base you prefer—they’ve got a white, thin base that’s been proved for 72 hours, a light and crispy wholemeal base, as well as a gluten free variety—and then choose between the 18 pizzas (plus specials) on offer. And if it’s all too hard, grab the banquet menu. Vegans: it’s your lucky day, Tony Tomatoes does vegan cheese!
Coffee Institute
Ten minutes out of the city in Walkerville, the Coffee Institute is a pleasure to wake up to. Get your phones out because the guys here serve gobsmackingly beautiful food that you’ve got to post on Instagram #sorrynotsorry. Get the pulled pork benedict, corn fritters, pannacotta and the pumpkin pie.
Spaghetti Western
Described as “where Clint Eastwood meets Jay Z” you know you’re in for a good time at Spaghetti Western. Their Italian American cuisine will impress anyone with a penchant for carbs and cheese. From the cheesy meatballs and the fried ravioli to the house made gnocchi and mac n cheese, your taste buds will be smiling the whole way home.
Golden Boy
There’s something about Adelaide and uber cool Asian restaurants. Golden Boy is everything you want on a night out with friends. Super cool interiors, a menu full of taste sensations and a dedication to making delicious cocktails. Oh and did I mention dessert? Roti with pandan custard and banana fritters with coconut ice cream anyone?
Shōbōsho
A modern Japanese gem in the heart of the city, Shōbōsho combines ancient traditions with modern finesse. Weekend bookings are essential if you want to get your hands on delicacies like their spiced prawn crackers with seaweed mayo, crumbed pork meatball sandwich and teriyaki chicken with smoked cauliflower, yuzu kosho cream and wood-baked shallot bread.
Pizzateca
Take a weekend drive out to McLaren Vale and stop by our favourite Nonna in Adelaide’s restaurant, Pizzateca. Enjoy classic Italian starters, pizzas and contorni under the shade of some big shady trees. For dessert, there’s only one option, Nonna Anna’s homemade tiramisu which is molto bene!
Adelaide Central Market
Whether you’re hungry or not, a visit to the Adelaide Central Market is an absolute must. It gives the La Boqueria in Barcelona a run for its money! You’ll find fresh produce as far as the eye can see, cheese samples, cured meats and cute little cafes, including Jamface, Poh Ling Yeow’s latest claim to fame. You’ll come home with a bounty of goodies and that’s a-ok.
Ballaboosta
One visit to Mediterranean restaurant Ballaboosta and you’ll be wishing you could bring it home with you. Offering up relaxed vibes in spades, you’re going to want to grab a table outside and order some mezze dips with their signature wood fired pita while you decide on what to order. I can vouch for the fattoush, any of the wood fired pizzas and the falafel.
Hispanic Mechanic
Singapore House’s friendly neighbour, Hispanic Mechanic serves a Korean twist on traditional Mexican eats. The papas fritas (crinkle cut fries with gochujang mayo) are a must, as are master Kim’s five star wings. Definitely check out the drinks list for all of your margarita and cerveza goodness.
Sunny’s Pizza
A super cool pizza bar in the city, Sunny’s is best enjoyed in person (so don’t order takeaway you fool). Slide up to the bar, order a round of drinks and prepare yourself for cheese, dough and salami good times.
Poké Me
For those days when you need a healthy feed among your feasting, Poké Me is the solution. Their salmon, tuna, tofu, chicken and vego bowls are fully customisable, right down to the sauce you want on top.
Frewville Foodland
You might think I am a little crazy telling you to go and eat at a supermarket while you’re on holiday, but this place needs to be seen to be believed. Not only do they stock a phenomenal range of products, they’ve got a charcuterie bar, bakery and even serve cocktails. Plus, if you go on the weekend you’ll get to enjoy local musicians playing the piano in the fruit and veg section. It’s no surprise this place was named the world’s best supermarket.

It may sound like a popular pastime in the world of Game of Thrones or an attraction at your local Renaissance Faire, but nevertheless, throwing axes is looking to be a bit of a trend. Case in point? Two axe bars are coming to the Boston area this year. They’re exactly what they sound like: a space where beer […]

Happy birthday BKV! Budapest’s public-transit company turns 50
One of Budapest’s best features is its outstanding public-transport network, carrying countless passengers around the city and to its furthest outskirts in every direction with buses, trams, subways, boats, a funicular, a chairlift, and other cool conveyances. All of this urban motion has continually rolled along for the last half-century thanks to the city’s BKV transit agency, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this month by highlighting its diverse fleet of modern and vintage vehicles. Plans also call for a series of events for the public to enjoy this moving heritage.

Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop 陳記專業蚵仔麵線 – Possibly The Best Mee Sua In Taipei
by admin @ DanielFoodDiary.com
Thu Jan 04 21:14:25 PST 2018
[Taipei] Ah Zong Mian Xian, otherwise known as Ay Chung Rice Noodles 阿宗麵線 used to be my favourite Mee Sua from Taipei. When I say “used to”, it could be as far a decade back when it was crowded, but not flooded with tourists like now. Unfortunately, the standard and consistency was not like in the past as the store gets more commercialised. I was recommended to Chen Ji Mee Sua 陳記專業蚵仔麵線, or Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop. Many call it the “Best Mee Sua in Taipei”, with “original local taste without over promoting”. Mee Sua is a Taiwanese dish that is basically a vermicelli soup included with large pork intestine or oysters. The noodles served with the soup should never fall apart or stick together. At least, this is what the general rule is. Chen Ji Mee Sua looked like an average Taiwanese food stand. No fanciful interior, just a counter where you can order food, and a couple of tables outside the shop. A large bowl大碗is priced at NT$65 (SGD$2.90), smaller bowl大碗at NT$50 (SGD$2.25), with clear vermicelli soup清麵線at NT$35 (SGD$1.60). If you like your pig’s intestines, then you would love the Mee Sua here. I found the pieces extremely soft, tender, and flavourful, and as a friend @eileen_eats_alot described, ”clean unlike some that have strong porky flavour”. I bought both large and small bowls to compare, and found the large bowl to be a lot more generous in ingredients. For the amount of oysters given, this bowl is reasonably priced. The consistency was smooth and thick without being sticky. Tip: Have it plain before adding some chilli and vinegar for more layered taste. I tried about 8 different bowls of Mee Sua in Taipei, this ranks as my top so far. In order to reach...

Foodie Events Worth Travelling For In WA
by Alexis Donkin @ The A List | The Urban List
Thu Jan 18 16:53:00 PST 2018
Planning a weekend away? What about a weekend away filled with WA's best cheeses, fruits, freshly baked breads and wine, oh you can't forget the wine. But don't worry, we're not just trying to fill your tummies, the events come with plenty of entertainment and some great opportunities to get out on the dance floor and work off those delicious slow-cooked beef rolls and craft WA beers.
That's right, this is your reminder that you don't need to be in the big smoke to enjoy some of the best culinary delights our state has to offer. Make a weekend of it with the girls, a couple of mates, or surprise someone special.
Here are the best foodie events worth travelling for in WA this year.
Taste Great Southern
8—25 March 2018
Spanning over 18 days and five sensational locations in the Great Southern including Albany, Denmark and Mt Barker, Taste Great Southern will see you enjoying local oysters and seafood, cereal crops, beef and lamb dishes and fresh local vegetables (stock up and take some home with you). There will be celebrity chefs—including Marco Pierre White—cooking up a storm and a huge range of amazing events and banquets to get involved in.
The Karijini Experience
17—22 April 2018
The Karijini Experience is much more than a food festival, but it did start with one exceptional dinner and considering the food on offer, we couldn't leave this celebration off this list! Get yourself tickets to the Fervor degustation or make your way to the bush tucker high tea. While you're there, you won't want to miss the opera in the gorge with the WASO string quartet, the astronomy night or the mountain bike ride from the airstrip to the eco-retreat!
Truffle Kerfuffle
22—24 June 2018
If you're not already excited about Truffle Kerfuffle then we probably can't be friends. Returning for its eighth year, Truffle Kerfuffle in Manjimup is one of the highlights of the year for any serious foodie. The line up is still to be announced for 2018, but last year saw the likes of River Cottage's Paul West, Fervor's Paul Iskov, Jesse Blake of Petition, Amy Hamilton of Liberte and so many more top chefs. Go truffle hunting and then sit back and relax while you enjoy one of the tastiest feasts you'll ever eat.
Dirk Hartog Island Gourmet Escape
August 2018
Dirk Hartog Island is about 850km north of Perth and is, quite simply, one of the most stunning places you’ll ever visit. Last year they hosted their first ever Dirk Hartog Island Gourmet Escape as part of the Gascoyne Food Festival and it was such a success that it will be back this year. Russell Blaikie of Must Wine Bar fame will be back this year to cook up a seafood paella over the campfire and he'll also be whipping up some seafood delights for the long table lunch.
Perth Hills Spring Festival
Every weekend in October
If you need to ease into the idea of travelling for food, this one's not too big of a drive. Taking place in the gorgeous hills region, the Perth Hills Pring Festival is the best way to get out of your winter rut! This event played host to an amazing cider festival last year and we are praying it returns for 2018, but there's plenty of other food and wine events to check out, just keep an eye on their website for this year's line up of events.
Brew And The Moo | Pilbara Beef And Beer Festival
TBC
Calling all lovers of the two great Bs—beer and beef. Is there a greater combo? Probably not, especially when you can find them combined in one dish. Brew And The Moo has taken place in the Pilbara for the past two years and we've got all our fingers and toes crossed that it will be back this year! There's obviously plenty to eat and drink, but there's also live music and stand up comedy, because everything is better with live comedy.
Gourmet Escape
15—18 November
There's been a lot of chatter of about the Margaret River Gourmet Escape coming to an end, and while it's true that it won't be held in Margaret River next year, the Gourmet Escape will be back in 2018. After six amazing years in the south west, the Gourmet Escape will most likely be moving to the Swan Valley, which really just means all that foodie goodness is a little bit closer to Perth!
Want more? Check out these dinners with a difference in Perth.

24 Reasons To Workout With Your Partner
by Grace Noles @ The A List | The Urban List
Mon Jan 22 09:00:00 PST 2018
Some days you just lack motivation at the gym. Nothing’s going right, you’re tired AF and your usual gym playlist just isn’t cutting it today—this is where you need a gym partner. Someone to pull you out of your slump and get your A into G!
And, who better to join you on the rack than your partner? You’re beyond comfortable around each other, you’re already working out together at home (wink wink), they instantly put you in a better mood, and let’s be real—who doesn’t want to gawk at their beau lifting some weights?
Here are some ways and reasons to workout with your number one!
They can spot you. Everyone needs a spot now and then, no one wants to ask a random at the gym—thank-you but no thank-you. This is where your partner comes in. They make workouts fun: doing anything with your partner is fun—whether it’s riding a rollercoaster or sitting on the couch watching a re-run of The Bachelor. Having your partner at the gym may just help you finally enjoy it! You can take selfies together: you CAN be couple goals! Snapping a post-gym pic with your bae will motivate both of you and fill everyone else with a pang of jealousy that they’re not quite as cute as you two. They won't judge you: they’ve seen you at your best and they’ve seen you at your worst. Seeing you mid squat, dripping with sweat will probably make them love you even a little bit more. They’ll push you to your hardest: no one wants the best for you more than your SO. There’s no way they’re letting you skip that last set of reps, and trust us you’ll thank them for it later. They will see the hard work you’re putting in: one of the greatest things about working hard in the gym is showing off your new bod to your partner. It’s even better when they actually see you putting in that effort! No lame excuses: nope, no skipping the gym today because you CBF. They’re dragging you there and making sure you do at least a half-assed workout today. Train together, stay together: that’s the motto. Working out increases positivity and affection towards one another! Cheat meals together: working hard = cheat meals. Make your favourite thing to do together not make you feel so guilt-ridden. You’ve both been working hard, time to reap the rewards! Arguments about dinner are non-existent: no more bickering when one of you wants a salad and the other neeeeds pizza. You’re both going to be feeling healthy AF and wanting to eat chicken and broccoli for every meal! You’ll be able to try new things: trying a new exercise at the gym is possibly the most frightening thing ever. What if you do it wrong, what if you look DUMB? Your confidence to try new things will skyrocket with your beau there and, if it doesn’t work out quite right, at least you can both laugh it off! There’s strength in numbers: having a gym buddy is such a confidence booster. You’re more likely to smash out personal bests and record reps with someone there to cheer you on the whole way. You can hold each other accountable: “I'll be up in the gym just working on my fitness, he’s my witness”, Fergie has a point—your partner will keep you in check with your workouts! Personal trainers may be cheaper: some personal trainers offer special couple deals, which means saving big bucks when it comes to those expensive training sessions. Cheaper supplements too: Protein, pre-workout, post-workout—it’s all expensive. Split the bill with ya partner and you’ll both be saving some moolah for the next date night. You can get a bit more intimate: having your regular gym buddy spotting you during a squat is just plain awkward, your partner will be a-okay with those up close and personal spots. Memes: you can tag each other in all those hilarious gym memes clogging your timeline. Sure, it may annoy your entire Facebook friend list but at least it makes you two happy. You’re going to be so proud of them: seeing gains on yourself is one thing, but when you notice how much fitter and stronger your partner is looking, you’ll be beaming with pride over how hard they’ve been working! Your libidos will be through the roof: it’s a fact, you’re welcome. You’re spending time together: you won’t have to spend two hours apart while you workout, it’s great bonding time! There’s nothing wrong with a date night at the gym. You’ll have more appreciation for each other: seeing the person you love work so hard will definitely make you respect them so much more. Presents will be a piece of cake: New gym gear, a fresh tub of protein, latest FitBit. Eassssssy! Massages! You have your own personal massage therapist waiting on hand and foot after a tough session. You’ll both be happier, healthier, stronger, and more in love than ever. And isn’t that what it’s all about?Want more? Here are 5 podcasts to listen to for health and wellbeing?
