Hanoi’s best boutique hotels

by Quynh Anh @ ALO Travel Asia

Hanoi might be famous for its impenetrable walls of Vespas, but the city isn’t quite as chaotic as it’s chalked up to be. Wandering about the capital of Vietnam, travelers expecting a wild urban adventure might be pleasantly surprised to also find quiet, leafy streets and hidden coffee shops. One of the most charming aspects of the city is the plethora of restored neoclassical and Gothic architecture — a holdover from the city’s stint as a... read more

South Africa Culture

Waterfront The waterfront is definitely worth a stroll and if you are hungry, a great place to stop and eat while watching the ships come and go. The architecture has an almost Victorian style, seagulls are surrounding you and some local entertainment made up of traditional music will fill the street corners. I went to eat at a local place called Quay4 to try their seafood cuisine. First I snacked on some oysters eating them the South African way (tabasco, salt, pepper and lemon) as well as some fried calamari and fish and chips! The food is extremely fresh and … Continue reading

Buenos Aires Culture

Live like a gaucho Las Pompas in Spanish means a day in the country and my day included a trip to La Cinacina- a ranch where the public can take part and see how the Argentinean gaucho lives his day. With his red scarf and sombrero, the Argentina gaucho is similar to the American cowboy.  At La Cinacina we were treated to a trick riding show, wagon and horse rides, music, dancing and, of course, asado (barbecue beef).  If you are lucky, you will have a gaucho ask you for a dance to the traditional music.

One of the reasons Sri Lanka was so desired was its rich soil that produced so many spices for the world. Once it was discovered by Portuguese, cinnamon became one of the most popular spices to trade. The hills and hot to … Continue reading

Sri Lanka Adventure

by editor @ Ashley Colburn Productions

Hike Sigiriya Mostly recognized as Lion’s Rock, the town of Sigiriya is about a 3-hour drive from Colombo. Sitting amongst fields of jungle this huge rock protrudes in the distance. I went to hike to the top where Prince Kashyapa had his stately residence and where his many wives also called their home. Honestly the hike is not too easy and a few parts involve holding onto rails as it can be steep and slippery. There are people that will offer to hold your hand and help you up, however don’t think that they don’t expect a tip. Once you … Continue reading

Zagreb became the capital of the country in 1991 following secession from Second Yugoslavia. During the Croatian War of Independence 1991-1995, the city received sporadic fighting surrounding, but was able to escape most damage. Today the city is an economical center for the country and is home to about one million inhabitants. Zagreb is also the hub to the country’s spectacular highway systems. The highways have allowed the country to advance in so many ways and makes touring the country a breeze. History of Seychelles Islands

by editor @ Ashley Colburn Productions

Taking almost two days to get there- I can tell I was never more excited to land, especially when it was in paradise.  Made up of 115 islands, it’s another world, a secluded getaway that also happened to be the destination for the royal couple’s honeymoon (while I was there)! This secluded getaway was deserted until the French drifted ashore in 1742.  Later, this French colony was succeeded to the British during the French Revolution and was operated under British rule for 162 years before gaining independence in 1976.  Boasting with 115 granitic and coralline islands, the main island and … Continue reading

Adventure in Split

by editor @ Ashley Colburn Productions

Picigin Many of you probably don’t recognize this word do you?  Well, it was my first time hearing it when I was in Split.  I heard it first when I was on Bacvice Beach, the best place to play this belly flopping sport.  I found it very odd that many people were running around and looked like they were doing face plants into the water.  However, the reason this sport is played here is because the water level is consistent, making it a shallow field of water.  The object of the game is to keep the ball in the air, … Continue reading

Lokrum Often referred  to as the island of love, this island is a quick ferry ride from Dubronik’s port, located just 600 meters off the coast.   A Benedictine monastery and abbey were found on the island when it was first mentioned in 1023.  The island is full of trees and if you are feeling adventurous and want to walk to the top fortress that overlooks to Dubrovnik’s old city, you can also enjoy a stroll through the Botanical Gardens.  Today the island is a nature reserve and is very protected, but you can still swim in and around the small … Continue reading

My pedicure was performed by tiny fish that nibbled on the dry skin of my feet while soaking them.
