Woman Answers Man’s Marriage Advert on Facebook as a Joke, Marries Him a Week Later

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

When Sophy Ijeoma, a makeup artist from Nigeria, decided to comment on an acquaintance’s Facebook marriage advert as a joke, she never imagined she would marry the man just seven days later, but I guess she underestimated the power of social media. The day before New Year’s Eve, Nigerian furniture maker Chidimma Amedu decided it was to find a wife. Instead of probing his friends or going on a dating site, he just posted an advert on Facebook, asking all women interested in becoming his wife to reply to his post. It read “Am of age to and I am ready to say I do and I am wasting no time. Send in your applications. The most qualified will be married on January 6, 2018. Application closes 12 midnight, December 31, 2017. I am serious about this… and don’t say you did not see it on time. Goodluck.” Amedu received a few responses from interested parties, but the one that caught his attention came from Sophy Ijeoma, an acquaintance he barely knew. She was maid of honor at a friend’s when she saw the funny post, and it piqued her interest. She had been Facebook friends with Amedu for about a year but had previously had little interaction beyond occasional likes and comments. Initially, she thought the post was a joke and replied saying: “Am interested, just DM me…lols.” “I never knew he was serious about the post,” Ijeoma told the BBC. Amedu, however, was completely serious. He sent her a private message, and they began chatting via Facebook messenger. Two days later the couple had their first date at a mall in Ijeoma’s hometown of Enugu, in southeastern Nigeria. Amedu traveled over 500 km (300 miles) from his home in the northern city of Abuja to meet her there. “It was love at first sight,” Ijeoma told reporters. “He is the most handsome man I’ve ever met, and I liked him instantly.” Amedu felt the same, and after taking one look at her said, “You’re beautiful”. After two hours of conversation, Amedu asked Ijeoma to meet his uncle who also happened to live in Enugu. Family support behind one’s choice of spouse is an essential part of Igbo culture. “We got to the uncle’s house, and he said: ‘Uncle, meet the woman I want to marry,'” Ijeoma recalled. “When I saw him for the first time, I definitely found him attractive, but what I didn’t know how serious he was about marrying me. It was after we met the uncle and his wife, that I realized that this could actually happen and I wanted it.” The couple decided to keep their momentum and seek the approval of Ijeoma’s family on the same day. Her father had passed away, so it was up to her elder brother to give his blessing, which, somewhat surprisingly, he did. It was official – Amedu and Ijeoma were engaged to be married all within hours of meeting. Full article

U.S. panel deals blow to Philip Morris tobacco device

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

U.S. panel deals blow to Philip Morris tobacco device By Toni Clarke A man uses an IQOS e-cigarette at an outlet in London, Britain, January 25, 2018. REUTERS/Peter Nicholls WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Philip Morris International Inc <PM.N> should not be allowed to claim its iQOS electronic tobacco product is less risky than cigarettes, U.S. health advisers said on Thursday, dealing a blow to the company as it seeks to strengthen its portfolio of alternative nicotine devices. The recommendation is not binding and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could still allow Philip Morris to make such a claim, but some analysts think the agency might ask for additional data first. "It's a process," said Bonnie Herzog, an analyst at Wells Fargo. The FDA will likely approve the request eventually, she said, "but timing is tough to predict." Philip Morris, which has spent more than $3 billion to develop products that can counteract the decline in traditional cigarette sales, said it was encouraged by some of the committee members' comments that iQOS may have risk-reduction potential. "We are confident in our ability to address the valid questions raised by the Committee with the FDA as the review process for our application continues," Corey Henry, a Philip Morris spokesman, said in a statement. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb recently proposed a broad tobacco policy shift that would reduce nicotine in cigarettes to "non-addictive" levels while increasing development of lower-risk alternatives for those unable to quit. IQOS is a sleek, penlike device that heats tobacco but does not ignite it - an approach Philip Morris says produces far lower levels of carcinogens than regular cigarettes. It is used by nearly 4 million people in 30 markets outside the United States but needs FDA authorization to be marketed in America. Last month, a Reuters investigation described irregularities in the clinical trials that supported Philip Morris' iQOS application to the FDA. (https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/tobacco-iqos-science/) and (http://www.reuters.com/investigates/section/pmi) The company's shares fell 2.8 percent to close at $107.49 on Thursday, after falling as much as 6.8 percent. Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, said panelists "identified that serious questions remain" about the company's application. He said it could amend the application and the panel's recommendation does not rule out an ultimate approval. The panel said Philip Morris had not proven that iQOS reduced harm compared with cigarettes. It did conclude that the product exposes users to lower levels of harmful chemicals but said the company had not shown that lowering exposure to those chemicals is reasonably likely to translate into a measurable reduction in disease or death. Philip Morris needs to show both in order to claim in its marketing materials that the product reduces a user's exposure to harmful chemicals. Some panelists were concerned that not all the harmful or potentially harmful chemicals in iQOS were lower than in cigarettes. Philip Morris presented data showing an overall exposure reduction of about 95 percent. "The negative recommendations did not come as a surprise," said Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association. He said the panelists "disconnected themselves from the facts in favour of ideology." The FDA is expected to decide whether Philip Morris can sell iQOS within the next few months. It will decide separately whether to authorise the modified-risk claims. There is no time frame for when that decision might come. If cleared, iQOS would be sold in the United States by Philip Morris' partner Altria Group Inc <MO.N>. Altria shares closed 2.3 percent lower at $69.91. 10 THINGS I CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Recently I’ve taken a four-month break off of travel to settle into a comfortable life in a quiet town. It’s been nice, mostly.

I do miss packing and unpacking the bags. I miss tossing away ripped up socks, giving away paperback books, and moving what’s left of my big shampoo into a small little shampoo thingy.

Some things are essential to have packed and ready to grab when I’m on the road. I will not include the obvious things like a camera, computer, passport, etc. These following are the little home run hitters that are easy to forget about, but always needed:

1. DENTAL FLOSS

I like to eat. I like to eat meat. I like eating late. My teeth are spaced fairly far apart from laughing too much. Stuff gets in there and I need to get it out. I’ve often been wandering ... Read More »

Discovering Sapa: A Comprehensive Guide to Visiting Vietnam’s Northern Hill Station

Sapa is famous for its beautiful landscapes full of verdant rice paddies, rolling hills, Vietnam’s highest mountain, and hidden trails in overgrown valleys. While the idea of coming here for a trek far off from the noise and pollution of the big cities inspires wanderlust, organizing it all can be a bit daunting, especially for […]

Is Thai uncontested Amphur Divorce recognised as "by means of proceedings" as far as UK concerned?

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Hi, have been searching high and low, even asking solicitors but can't seem to find the definitive answer so figured maybe someone whose actually been through it can tell me the answer. Background: Me (British) her (Thai) looking to get divorce in Thailand Amphur (Bang Rak district office - the same place we were married). I'm very keen on this divorce being recognised in the UK... As per this document, https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/overseas-divorces-set13/overseas-divorces-set13 - if Amphur uncontested divorce is classified as a divorce "BY MEANS OF PROCEEDINGS" i should be fine as we satisfy the recognition criteria, however if Amphur divorce is classified as "OTHERWISE THAN BY MEANS OF PROCEEDINGS" divorce will not be recognised in UK and give me future complications (because we had been residing in UK for 12 months) Do you know which it is? Is Amphur uncontested divorce as far as UK courts are concerned "by means of proceedings" or not? Many thanks in advance!

Phuket U-turn flyover project expecting Royal Decree within 6 months

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Phuket U-turn flyover project expecting Royal Decree within 6 months Shela Riva PHUKET:-- The Highways Department team responsible for the construction of the B200-million U-turn flyover project confirmed today (Jan 26) that the project will go ahead after they obtain a Royal Decree from the government in Bangkok to gain access to the land due to unwilling land owners in the surrounding areas. With regards to construction materials left in one lane of Thepkrasattri Rd which has fueled complaints from locals, Project Engineer Kit Sonsuwan told The Phuket News, “The contractor has been able to start some parts of the construction and preparations, specifically in the middle of the road, where the Highways Department has access to the land. “As we then encountered problems where nearly all of the land owners did not want their land to be expropriated, we had to file a request for a Royal Decree. The contractors said at first that they would remove the materials by December. But now they have requested more time until April. Thailand (local health insurance) for expat

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

So yesterday I got my finally got my Non O immigration based on marriage visa extension here in Chiang Mai . This is good for a year, My question is and my Thai wife brought this up yesterday, is there a way to get local health insurance like a Thai with a card and all that and pay into it without having work permit ,without working ,but just paying into it now that I live here full-time and am married to a local. I don't work, I have full retirement, medically based pension from the US government for life and so I can't work and I already pay for health insurance in United States through Medicare , which is 113 US dollars a month I think. Anyways I don't want to have to pay a bunch of extra money since I'm already paying for one health insurance, it would be more ideal if I could try to get on the local system. I'm wondering if there's a way that I can do that ? Thank you Sent from my [device_name] using http://Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

Sleeping Amongst The Dead In Puerto Inca, Peru

by Forest Ray @ WanderGoGo

“What is this place?” “This is the necropolis of the Inca.” The young woman at Hotel Puerto Inka’s lonely reception desk motions towards small circular stone structures dotting the hillside above us. “You can walk around if you like,” she says. “Just don’t disturb the stones.” The sea carves out a small cove here at Puerto Inca, along Peru’s southern coast. The bulk of the necropolis clings to a thin strip of sand between jagged pillars of volcanic rock and the battering tide. The only permanent occupants here are death and the ocean, two forces beyond human scale, each held in the other’s gaze. Even the hotel is merely a visitor. Skeletons lie scattered within the crumbling stone walls of […]

Thai women's prison highlights need for reform, drug policy rethink

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Thai women's prison highlights need for reform, drug policy rethink By Amy Sawitta Lefevre Women prisoners are seen during their lunch at Chiang Mai Women's Correctional Institute, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, January 24, 2018. Picture taken January 24, 2018. REUTERS/Athit Perawongmetha CHIANG MAI, Thailand (Reuters) - A visit by a Thai princess to a women's prison on Thursday spotlighted the need for reform in a country that houses some of the world's most crowded jails, partly because of its battle against the scourge of illicit drugs. Several Southeast Asian governments, led by the Philippines, have adopted hardline policies on drug-related crimes, putting a heavy burden on their jails, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says. Thailand has about a tenth of Southeast Asia's population, but about 40 per cent of its prisoners, most convicted of drug offences. "We have to ensure fair and equitable justice, understand the reasons people are ending up in prison, and we also have to address the specific needs of women," Thailand's Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol said. The remarks came as she led diplomats on a visit to the Women's Correctional Institute in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, to show how it had applied rules embodying a more gender-sensitive approach. The prison is one of ten in Thailand piloting the "Bangkok Rules", or guidelines for the treatment of female prisoners adopted by the United Nations' General Assembly in 2010. "Women have very different needs," Jeremy Douglas, UNODC Regional Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, told Reuters. "They have health needs, they have children. So if they follow a male prison model it doesn't work." Thailand has the fourth highest number of women prisoners in the world, after the United States, China, and Russia, says a French non-government body, the International Federation for Human Rights. Some of the prison's 1,982 women inmates, 80 percent of whom have drug convictions, said they had experienced a difference since it adopted the U.N. Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners, as they are formally known. "When I first came here it had been a male prison. It was very dirty. It's cleaner now," a 43-year-old who is serving a life sentence for trafficking methamphetamine pills, told Reuters during a visit to the prison. In the prison's nursery, mothers were being encouraged to breastfeed their babies and elsewhere, other inmates received training in silk weaving and traditional massage. Yet much remains to be done. Women's prisons in Thailand are ready to adopt the Bangkok Rules, said Bussaba Sakrangkul, director of the Chiang Mai prison, but some facilities needed to be upgraded and some design changes made. Overcrowding also remains an issue, with up to 50 inmates sleeping in a single room. "What we've been looking out for is how to reduce prison overcrowding, not only in Thailand but across the region," Douglas said, adding that such steps called for changes to drug policy, shorter jail terms and treatment programmes. The 5 Best Night Markets in Taipei

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Taipei is inarguably one of the top street food cities in the world. Taiwan is known as the land of snacks: they have literally invented and re-invented genre after genre of snack food over the years. From pearl tea to fried chicken, the Taiwanese are all about inventing and perfecting the ultimate snack foods. Think Chinese-influenced foods created with the ingenuity and dedication to perfection that (you would think) only the Japanese would bring. While Taipei isn’t quite as famous with local Taiwanese as Tainan for their snack culture, they’ve got it covered and will most likely be your first stop in Taiwan. The sheer volume of street food options available alone are enough but, matched with the quality and price of the food available on the streets, it’s pretty much unbeatable. The catch with Taipei street food though, is ... Read More »

Video: Pick-up collides with motorcycle causing rider to somersault in the air on Bang Na - Trat Picture: Thai Rath CCTV footage showed a pick-up truck cross three lanes of traffic on the Bang Na - Trat highway yesterday and collide with a motorcycle. There was a fair amount of fast moving traffic but the pick-up driver would not wait and pushed out causing a car to stop in the center lane. This may have obscured the sight of the motorcyclist who was clearly not expecting the vehicle to pull in front of him. The footage was put on the Khon Khao Bang Pakong site on Facebook. Thai Rath said the pick-up was entering the soi of the Bang Pakong provincial water authority on a section of the highway heading towards Chonburi. No other details were given. 8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

Re-entry Fees

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Previously I had been coming to Thailand with a new Multiple Entry Visa based on Retirement because I just happened to be out of the country when my visa expired. However, last year I was still in Thailand so I obtained an extension of stay which cost 1900 baht. I assumed that this extension of stay would include the same terms as my original multi entry visa. However, in January this year I needed to travel to a ceremony abroad for 10 days. On my leaving the country by plane at Suvarnabhumi airport I was told by immigration that I needed a Re entry permit to return and was shuffled off to a different place to get one at a cost of 1000 baht plus 200 baht admin costs. Total cost 1200 baht. My extension of stay expires in the middle of February when I shall renew it at a cost of 1900 baht. Can anyone explain why I need a re entry permit if I leave Thailand for a short holiday? It strikes me that I may be better off timing my travels for when my extension of stay expires and return with a new Multiple Entry Visa. This would be cheaper if I travel often as is my intention.

Election coming, says Prawit, hinting at possibility of lifting political ban

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Election coming, says Prawit, hinting at possibility of lifting political ban By The Nation An election would definitely be held, said Deputy PM General Prawit Wongsuwan. And he held out the possibility of the junta lifting the ban on political activities if the situation is calm and procedures are followed. Prawit was speaking after an amendment to the MP election bill was passed Thursday night by the National Legislative Assembly. The amendment, to delay implementation of the bill for 90 days beyond its proclamation, is expected to delay the vote to as late as February rather than the previously announced November deadline. “There is no problem,” said Prawit. “It’s good [that they have passed the bill] because people keep asking when the election will be held.” However, he declined to comment on a remark that the passage of the bill would result in the roadmap being delayed, saying the NLA had decided on the matter and so no further questions were needed. Prawit also said there was no need to explain the move to the international community, which has repeatedly shared its concern over Thailand being governed by a military junta since 2014. The international community wished to see the election held, and it would be, said Prawit. It has just been delayed for three months, he said. It is clear that no further delay would take place, and the current delay still follows what was permitted under the charter. The deputy PM said he could see no reason to further impact the election timing. If the situation is calm and procedures are followed, the junta would consider lifting the political ban, he added. Prawit also rejected the notion that the junta exerted pressure on the NLA to delay the election timing. The bill originated with and was passed by the NLA, which considered the amendment into the night, he said. SIEM REAP’S 10 BEST BARS: CLASSY, HIDDEN DIVES JUST OUTSIDE OF ANGKOR

Every year I find myself in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a week. It’s inevitable, and always enjoyable.

Angkor Wat is, along with Bagan in Myanmar, one of the two most spectacular temple sites in Asia, if not the world. I’ve come back again and again with friends, or by myself. Although lately I barely spend time in the temples of Angkor Wat, I love the cafe and bar scene of nearby Siem Reap, a charming little French colonial town adjacent to Angkor that now serves as the tourist-amenity center of the region. Though a tourist town, it’s far from a tourist trap. There is something about the clear blue sky, slow clouds and that long twilight that I love here. And, there’s the drinks.

Sole custody for unmarried Thai mother?

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

My girlfriend has a 3 year old daughter with a Thai man. They were never married and the father's name is on the birth certificate, but has never shown any interrest in his daughter. Now we are in the process of applying for a visa for my girlfriend and her daughter to come to live with me in my home country in Europe. We went to my girlfriend's amphur and got a "Por Kor 14" document for the daughter, which allowed us to get her a passport. The rules in my home country is a bit unclear if "Por Kor 14" is enough to give the daughter a visa and we decided to get a document from the court stating that the mother have sole custody. My girlfriend went to the court of her home province and in the same building (I think) found a lawyer that could help. The lawyer's office copied a lot of douments about the daughter and charged 2000 baht to start work. No two weeks later he called and said everything was ready and he will sent the sole custody document for a fee of 5000 baht. This is good, but I can't help feeling it was a bit too easy and cheep. As far as know the father has not been involved signing any documents. What are your thoughts about this?

Vongsey Vissoth, secretary of state at the ministry, held a meeting with Philippe Bauduin, the deputy chief executive officer of AFD, to talk about development cooperation on Tuesday, the statement said. The meeting discussed policy and strategy for cooperation in the coming years, and how the needs of Cambodia could be matched with financial support from France. Mr Bauduin committed to continued support for development in Cambodia. “AFD plans to expand financial cooperation for development for Cambodia,” he said. After the meeting, Mr Vissoth signed a concessional loan agreement with AFD for clean water and hygiene projects in the provinces. by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

A fire broke out at the power control room of the Khon Kaen International Airport early on Friday, prompting all flights to be canceled during the first half of the day. The web page of the airport announced that a short circuit occurred in the electrical control room on the third floor of the main building of the airport at 5 am. The page said the airport's service had to be temporarily closed and passengers must contact their airlines – Nok Air, Lion Air, Thai Smiles and Thai AirAsia – for more details. The headline stated that service would be canceled the first half of the day. But, I have not heard if they are back to normal or not. Tried to contact the airport with no luck. Tried to contact Air Asia, again no luck. Called, E-mailed, checked on their website. Absolutely no information to be found. Have a flight tomorrow but can not find out if the airport is back to normal operation.

‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

“a place around the bend where he could jump off”

Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?

A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

Nissan ZD30 EGR pipe

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

After towing my car to the garage and getting a quote of 30.000 baht (overhaul) to fix the problem i brought it back home and investigated the problem myself. The problem was a loud tinging sound which was hard to pinpoint. The garage was convinced it was inside the engine and i was convinced it was not because it sounded very high pitched and almost like a bell. If it was in side the engine it would sound dampened. Well after a days work i found the culprit. It was the EGR pipe that runs at the back of the engine. One side was broken and with the vibrations it was metal on metal making that sound. I removed it and now would like to replace it. And here the next problem starts. After contacting Nissan, they say this part is not made anymore and is thus not available. I beg to differ as the whole point of spare parts is to service older cars. Are there any good suppliers of parts in Thailand, maybe one that can send parts to my location in Prachuap City. I found one on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/D22-Nissan-Navara-3-0-Zd30-Diesel-EGR-PIPE-Fits-2001-2007/253351553702?hash=item3afcedeaa6:g:UNEAAOSwU8JZqesZ&vxp=mtr, but that would not be my first choice as i would like to fix it more quickly. Any help to locate this item is much appreciated!

Student-designed Thai robot makes bomb disarming safer

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Student-designed Thai robot makes bomb disarming safer By Chalinee Thirasupa The Nation The inspection and disposal of suspected bombs will soon be safer, and the risk to officers disarming explosives reduced, thanks to a Thai robotic innovation. Several prototypes of the “explosive ordnance disposal man portable intelligent robot” were handed over to the Defence Technology Institute (DTI) on Friday during a Bangkok event showcasing defence innovations to mark the DTI’s 10th anniversary. The prototypes were presented to DTI director-general Air Chief Marshal Preecha Pradabmook by Udomkiat Nontakaew, dean of the Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB). They were developed from a rescue robot by a KMUTNB student team, which had won the First Place and the Best in Class Mobility awards from the World Robocup Rescue 2016 held in Leipzig, Germany, for real use in industry and country defence as per the Thailand 4.0 policy. The “EOD Man Portable Intelligent Robot”, with parts made in Thailand, is 48 centimetres long, 43cm wide (including track wheels) and 20cm high. It can travel on flat ground at a top speed of 1 metre per second, climb a slope with a 45-degree angle and pull a 15-kilogram object. Its wireless remote control radius is 150 metres and it is equipped for better object inspection with a front camera, a back camera and a high-angle camera as well as those attached to its “gripper” robotic arms, which can lift up to a 5kg weight. It can perform a task continuously at one hour before requiring recharging. The robot is set to inspect a suspected bomb and then shoot a high-pressure water gun to dispose of the explosive. Fruit wine and labels

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Just a question for the followers of Baccus. I've noticed lately that the printed info' on bottles of 'wine' the small and getting smaller 'Fruit Wine' note is getting smaller by the month. The price also seems to be increasing slowly as well. Main question I want to ask, because I haven't been for while, is 'Fruit Wine' that is wine with 10- 25% fruit juice common now in UK, EU or wherever. Reason for asking is today my wife bought a bottle of Oz wine and when checking it the front label had no mention of where it was bottled and the back had 'Fruit Wine' in very small print on the back label. I can't imagine going to a bar in Italy and getting served 'Fruit Wine.' Any opinions out there??

Tanes said that this years strategy will aim to follow the Thailand 4.0 Roadmap and the sufficiency economy philosophy. China unveils vision for 'Polar Silk Road' across Arctic

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

China unveils vision for 'Polar Silk Road' across Arctic FILE PHOTO: Chinese President Xi Jinping speaks during a joint press briefing with French President Emmanuel Macron, not shown, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China January 9, 2018. REUTERS/Mark Schiefelbei/Pool BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Friday outlined its ambitions to extend President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic by developing shipping lanes opened up by global warming. Releasing its first official Arctic policy white paper, China said it would encourage enterprises to build infrastructure and conduct commercial trial voyages, paving the way for Arctic shipping routes that would form a "Polar Silk Road". "China hopes to work with all parties to build a 'Polar Silk Road' through developing the Arctic shipping routes," the paper, issued by the State Council Information Office, said. China, despite being a non-Arctic state, is increasingly active in the polar region and became an observer member of the Arctic Council in 2013. Among its increasing interests in the region is its major stake in Russia's Yamal liquefied natural gas project which is expected to supply China with four million tonnes of LNG a year, according to the state-run China Daily. Shipping through the Northern Sea Route would shave almost 20 days off the regular time using the traditional route through the Suez Canal, the newspaper reported last month. COSCO Shipping has also previously sailed vessels through the Arctic's northeast passage. China's increasing prominence in the region has prompted concerns from Arctic states over its long-term strategic objectives, including possible military deployment. "Some people may have misgivings over our participation in the development of the Arctic, worried we may have other intentions, or that we may plunder resources or damage the environment," Vice-Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou said at a briefing. "I believe these kinds of concerns are absolutely unnecessary." The white paper said China also eyes development of oil, gas, mineral resources and other non-fossil energies, fishing and tourism in the region. It said it would do so "jointly with Arctic States, while respecting traditions and cultures of the Arctic residents including the indigenous peoples and conserving natural environment". China's Belt and Road initiative aims to connect China to Europe, the Middle East and beyond via massive infrastructure projects across dozens of countries, reflecting Xi's desire for China to take on a more prominent global leadership role. Regina Students Seek Help for their Six Year Coma Friend

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Regina Students Seek Help for their Six Year Coma Friend by CityNews CityNews – Regina Coeli students are raising funds for their classmate who has been suffering a severe coma for over six years, who is now under care of her 82 year old grandmother. Hiranyaga ‘Mild’ Luang Dang, now aged 18, was a senior student of Regina Coeli College when she fell into a coma following a drowning accident in November 2011. She has been in a deep coma for the last six years and two months. Sompong Chaiwattana, Mild’s grandmother who is aged 82, told reporters that her father left Mild and her mother a few months after the accident to start a new family with a new love interest. For the first three years, Mild’s mother relied on benefits from her job at the Provincial Electricity Authority to support her daughter’s treatment. In 2014, Mild’s mother passed away after a short battle with cancer. Sompong took over the care of Mild and her medical costs from that point onwards, using money given to her by Mild’s only other family member – her uncle who is now in his 50s. They soon could not afford the bills so just under three years ago, Mild was taken out of hospital and re-located to their home. She is still reliant on medical equipment and regular doctors’ visits. Sompong has reportedly used her lifetime savings to achieve this, reaching monthly costs of between 30,000 and 50,000 baht. Exclusive - Despite sanctions, North Korea exported coal to South and Japan via Russia: intelligence sources

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Exclusive - Despite sanctions, North Korea exported coal to South and Japan via Russia: intelligence sources By Guy Faulconbridge, Jonathan Saul and Polina Nikolskaya FILE PHOTO - Post stamps with images of North Korean leaders Kim Jong Un and Kim Jong-il are seen at the "Made In North Korea" exhibition held at the UMAM museum in Moscow, Russia January 20, 2018. REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov PARIS/LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - North Korea shipped coal to Russia last year which was then delivered to South Korea and Japan in a likely violation of U.N. sanctions, three Western European intelligence sources said. The U.N. Security Council banned North Korean exports of coal last Aug. 5 under sanctions intended to cut off an important source of the foreign currency Pyongyang needs to fund its nuclear weapon and long-range missile programmes. But the secretive Communist state has at least three times since then shipped coal to the Russian ports of Nakhodka and Kholmsk, where it was unloaded at docks and reloaded onto ships that took it to South Korea or Japan, the sources said. A Western shipping source said separately that some of the cargoes reached Japan and South Korea in October last year. A U.S. security source also confirmed the coal trade via Russia and said it was continuing. "Russia's port of Nakhodka is becoming a transhipping hub for North Korean coal," said one of the European security sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of international diplomacy around North Korea. Russia's foreign ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment sent on Jan 18. Russia's mission to the United Nations informed the Security Council sanctions committee on Nov. 3 that Moscow was complying with the sanctions. Two lawyers who specialise in sanctions law told Reuters it appeared the transactions violated U.N. sanctions. Reuters could not independently verify whether the coal unloaded at the Russian docks was the same coal that was then shipped to South Korea and Japan. Reuters also was unable to ascertain whether the owners of the vessels that sailed from Russia to South Korea and Japan knew the origin of the coal. The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday put the owner of one of the ships, the UAL Ji Bong 6, under sanctions for delivering North Korean coal to Kholmsk on Sept. 5. It was unclear which companies profited from the coal shipments. RUSSIA URGED "DO MORE" ON SANCTIONS North Korean coal exports were initially capped under a 2016 Security Council resolution that required countries to report monthly imports of coal from North Korea to the council's sanctions committee within 30 days of the end of each month. Diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia had not reported any imports of North Korea coal to the committee last year. The sanctions committee told U.N. member states in November that a violation occurs when "activities or transactions proscribed by Security Council resolutions are undertaken or attempts are made to engage in proscribed transactions, whether or not the transaction has been completed." Asked about the shipments identified by Reuters, Matthew Oresman, a partner with law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman who advises companies on sanctions, said: "Based on these facts, there appears to be a violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution by the parties involved." "Also those involved in arranging, financing, and carrying out the shipments could likely face U.S. sanctions," he said. Asked about the shipments, a U.S. State Department spokesman said: "It's clear that Russia needs to do more. All U.N. member states, including Russia, are required to implement sanctions resolutions in good faith and we expect them all to do so." The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The independent panel of experts that reports to the Security Council on violations of sanctions was not immediately available for comment. North Korea has refused to give up the development of nuclear missiles capable of hitting the United States. It has said the sanctions infringe its sovereignty and accused the United States of wanting to isolate and stifle North Korea. An independent panel of experts reported to the Security Council on Sept. 5 that North Korea had been "deliberately using indirect channels to export prohibited commodities, evading sanctions." Reuters reported last month that Russian tankers had supplied fuel to North Korea at sea and U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters in an interview on Jan. 17 that Russia was helping Pyongyang get supplies in violation of the sanctions. The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday imposed sanctions on nine entities, 16 people and six North Korean ships it accused of helping the weapons programs. TWO ROUTES Two separate routes for the coal were identified by the Western security sources. The first used vessels from North Korea via Nakhodka, about 85 km (53 miles) east of the Russian city of Vladivostok. One vessel that used this route was the Palau-flagged Jian Fu which Russian port control documents show delivered 17,415 tonnes of coal after sailing from Nampo in North Korea on Aug. 3 and docking at berth no. 4 run by LLC Port Livadiya in Nakhodka. It left the port on Aug. 18. The vessel had turned off its tracking transmitter from July 24 to Aug. 2, when it was in open seas, according to publicly available ship tracking data. Under maritime conventions, this is acceptable practice at the discretion of the ship's captain, but means the vessel could not be tracked publicly. Another ship arrived at the same berth -- No. 4 -- on Aug. 16, loaded 20,500 tonnes of coal and headed to the South Korean port of Ulsan in Aug. 24, according to Russian port control documents. Reuters was unable to reach the operator of the Jian Fu, which was listed in shipping directories as the China-based Sunrise Ship Management. The Nakhodka-based transport agent of the Jian Fu did not respond to written and telephone requests for comment. LLC Port Livadiya did not respond to a written request for comment. The second route took coal via Kholmsk on the Russian Pacific island of Sakhalin, north of Japan. At least two North Korean vessels unloaded coal at a dock in Kholmsk port in August and September after arriving from the ports of Wonsan and Taean in North Korea, Russian port control data and ship tracking data showed. The Rung Ra 2 docked in Kholmsk three times between Aug 1 and Sept. 12, unloading a total of 15,542 tonnes of coal, while the Ul Ji Bong 6 unloaded a total of 10,068 tonnes of coal on two separate port calls -- on Aug. 3 and between Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, according to the official Russian Information System for State Port Control. The coal did not pass Russian customs because of the UN sanctions taking effect, but was then loaded at the same dock onto Chinese-operated vessels. Those vessels stated their destination in Russian port control documents as North Korea, according to a source in Sakhalin port administration who spoke on condition of anonymity. Reuters has seen the port control documents which state the destination of the coal as North Korea. But the vessels that loaded the North Korean coal sailed instead for the ports of Pohang and Incheon in South Korea, ship tracking data showed. The Chinese commerce ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday included the owner of the Ul Ji Bong 6 under sanctions for delivering North Korean coal to Kholmsk after the sanctions took effect. It was unclear which companies profited from the coal shipments. Asked about the shipments, a South Korean foreign ministry official said: "Our government is monitoring any sanctions-evading activities by North Korea. We're working closely with the international community for the implementation of the sanctions." The official declined to say whether the ministry was aware of the shipments reported by Reuters. The Japanese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The European security sources said the route via Russia had developed as China, North Korea's neighbour and lone major ally, cracked down on exports from the secretive Communist state. "The Chinese have cracked down on coal exports from North Korea so the smuggling route has developed and Russia is the transit point for coal," one of the European security sources said. Nightmare buying a 3D printer kit.

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Just sharing my experience with buying a 3D printer kit from China. I started with Lazada as I have purchased many small items with great success. Found a nice kit from a seller in China and placed the order on Nov. 4 hoping to receive by my son's birthday on the 23, got a confirmation call from Lazada because item was 9000 baht, on Nov. 20 called Lazada to check on delivery and I was told item never left China and I should reorder, placed order again and next day was notified that item was shipped, great maybe a Christmas present. Called Lazada on December 10 to check on progress and was told that there was a problem with shipping and I should order from a different seller. I found a nicer kit that cost more (14,000) and placed the order. Jan 2. I called Lazada to check , sorry problem with logistics, may never arrive, if item is eventually delivered I can refuse. So totally disgusted with Lazada I decided to try Ali Express, found a nice kit and placed order $260 US and better than the ones I previously ordered, next day email that item is shipped via TNT , downloaded their app to track, 3 days later it shows item arrived in Thailand, great, 3 days later still in Bangkok, tried to contact TNT got a number in America, called that night and it was Fed ex, the lady explained that Fed ex had acquired TNT and got me the number for TNT Thailand. Called to inquire about the package and was told that they tried to call me but had the wrong number, gave email address for them to send documents that had to be filled out. About 10 minutes later email arrived with documents and instructions, all documents were in Thai and had to be filled out in Thai, and provide copies of passport pages and I must send them my original passport, I had my wife explain what the documents were and they listed a lot of extra charges not even including customs charges, next day I was informed that since it was a 3D printer kit, I had to get an import license from the government. At this point I had had enough with this and I contacted the seller and informed them that I was going to refuse the shipment and would be willing to pay for return shipping up to 50 US. Seller said they would contact TNT for more info. Next day I received a message from the seller saying that the cost was over 500 US to return, could I work with TNT to clear package, I decided to try again, emailed TNT and asked for a detailed list of charges up to this point, 500 baht for delivery, storage charges of 62.50 baht per kilogram per day (package was 10 kilos). Another 500 baht customs charge and whatever import tax was charged, and I had to get the import license myself. At this point the charges were already more than the printer, so I told them to return it. I was just informed that they could not return the package and it had to be destroyed, I said ok go ahead. That's my nightmare. I hope someone gets something out of this.

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Hello, I can't believe what just happened. It seems like she was able to mortgage the house in Bangkok at the land department... she took over 1 million baht by mortgaging my house ! How is this possible ? I have an official 30 yrs lease. She will never be able to repay the mortgage, what will happen to the house ? Will they take it from me ? Best regards,

Double Entry Visa for cruise to Hong Kong and Japan

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

I am a US citizen with a US passport. She is a Thai citizen, living in Thailand, with a Thai passport. We are flying from Thailand to Hong Kong, where we will take a cruise to Okinawa and back. We will then return to Thailand for a total of perhaps 10 days spent away from Thailand. Neither of us should require a visa to enter either country. But my GF has been reading and found that a double entry visa may be required for Hong Kong. I called the cruise line and they don't answer such questions, referring me to a visa service company. They said I should be fine but didn't know about her. I did some more research and my belief is that a double entry visa is only needed if you stop off in mainland China. That will not be the case here - Hong Kong to Okinawa and back. Can anyone verify that I am correct? Thanks in advance.

British passport for my thai born baby

Basically a fob off So I'm posting here to ask what forms I will need to fill out for passport app for my baby girl. Is it just the standard passport application and pretend I'm the kid? The form.they gave me says i need to go to the visa application centre (but no address on the paper) Bearing in mind that I have a 'thai wife' visa and spend more time in bangkok than London. I still have a house in the UK, pay taxes there and travel back every year. Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

Thai man claims shakedown by bogus cops, posts video online A Thai man posted a video of what he believed was a shakedown by three bogus plainclothes cops. He was stopped by the three men who arrived in a Vios and on two motorcycles. They claimed that his car had false plates. But when confronted as to what method they used to come to this conclusion they could not adequately explain. They muttered something about details on an application not having been updated yet. One of the men claimed to be "Sergeant Chaiyo" from Thammasala police station. Their ID said they were a special division. The Thai Rath story did not explain how the roadside meeting ended but they did point out that there was a policeman called Chaiyo Chaichorfa at the station in question. However he is a major not a sergeant. Thai Rath said to stay tuned as the story develops. The footage was uploaded to "Roo Yang - Pattaya" from Facebook user "NattapongTh Liberate". 2 percent excise tax rise for tobacco products and alcoholic drinks takes effect

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

2 percent excise tax rise for tobacco products and alcoholic drinks takes effect Starting today (Jan 26), all alcoholic drinks and tobacco products–both imported and domestically produced–will be charged an addition of two percent excise tax, with the extra revenue earned going into a fund to help elderly people. However, Excise Department director-general Mr Krisada Chinavicharana said that the 2 percent rise in excise tax would have little impact on the production cost of alcoholic drinks and tobacco products as it would account for a fraction of the costs. Citing the case of a packet of cigarettes whose excise tax amounting to 25 baht, he said that the excise tax increase would amount to just 50 satang. Whether the tax increase would impact on the retail price of cigarettes or not depends on the policy of the manufacturers and Thailand Tobacco Monopoly if they would be willing to absorb the additional cost or to pass it on to the consumers, Mr Krisada added. Thai police raid fake goods sellers at border

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Thai police raided about ten stores owned by Cambodian vendors at Thailand’s Rong Kluea market for selling counterfeit products on Wednesday. One market vendor, who asked not to be named, said Thai authorities targeted about ten stores and seized their goods, while the vendors managed to flee. The market, located on the Thai side of the Poipet International Border Checkpoint, is known as a hub for counterfeit products. Authorities have been trying to crack down on the sale of counterfeit goods, but some vendors say they can avoid the raids by bribing police officers, who tip them off before a raid. In 2016, about 100 Cambodian vendors working in the market protested and later clashed with Thai police, smashing police cars during the attempted confiscation of some of their goods. The Foreign Affairs Ministry and consulate office in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province intervened, and issued a statement, giving vendors time to sell off their fake goods by the end of April 2016. read more http://www.khmertimeskh.com/50104586/thai-police-raid-fake-goods-sellers/ -- © Copyright Khmer Times 26/01

Argument at Italian Embassy Bkk

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Having read on here a Thai can apply direct to the Italian (or any EU) Embassy for shengen visa at all seasons place my Mrs rang them to make sure- was told just go down no need for appointment. We got there today just before 12 to be told by the Italian security guy to go to Vfs. I said no she can apply here but he would not have that and insisted over and over we had to go to Vfs and that they did not do shengen visa there. It got quite heated with me saying EU law saying we could and him saying he is carabinari and he says no you go Vfs. In the end he started to back down a bit saying they were closed anyway, we knew they closed for lunch, and then asked for our nationalities (me Eu) He then took Mrs passport into the back office. When he came back he had a different attitude said he make a mistake wai ed the Mrs and told us to come back on Monday. We knew they were open again 13- 16 hours but did not fancy another argument over opening times, so she is going back on Monday. The guys attitude was very rude and aggressive, and he was also wrong, the worst Embassy, if you can call the place one I have ever had. Now the question is what is this law in case she has to quote it and can she apply there without applying as married to an EU national? She decided not to for various reasons, she also thinks this argument might have prejudiced her application. She is not impressed with Italians so far! The only amusing thing was that he actually looked a bit like Mussolini, especially with his arms folded, his leg spread apart and his jaw jutting out going on about Vfs!

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

Smartphone Battery Explodes After Man Inexplicably Bites Into It

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Chew on this: A man in China decides he needs to verify if a smartphone battery is legit ― so he bites it?!?!? It’s a decision that literally blew up in his face, as the now-viral video demonstrates. Security camera footage captured Jan. 19 at a store in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, shows the unidentified man biting into the iPhone battery, presumedly to check its authenticity. The move quickly proves to be a mistake, as the battery explodes. Amazingly, the man wasn’t seriously hurt in the blast. Since then, the wisdom in chomping down on a toxic lithium-ion battery has been the subject of some debate. Taiwan News noted that it’s common for people in China to test the authenticity of gold by biting it, which led Apple Insider to speculate the man somehow thought he could test the authenticity of the battery using the same technique. Gizmodo rightfully noted that iPhone batteries don’t have much gold in them, but they do contain a lot of toxic items that no one should ingest. On the rare occasions when a phone explodes, it’s often because the “positive” and “negative” battery plates have become joined, such as if the battery was pierced by a metal object, according to TeamKnowHow.com. The website points out that lithium-ion batteries, though considered very safe, can explode if they’re overcharged. Full article and video

Visiting Varanasi — the spiritual heart of India — on the banks of the River Ganges, was a long-standing dream of mine. The city had always fascinated me, maybe even scared me a little. I had read that few people visited Varanasi without falling ill. I had heard about the proximity to death, the funeral pyres, the floating bodies, the poverty and constant hassle from touts and beggars. I was also aware that there was beauty amongst the squalor. River ceremonies, vibrant colors, faithful pilgrims and floating candles.   A Memorable Bus Trip From The Nepalese Border My partner and I spent five months backpacking around India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Facebook: Russian agents created 129 U.S. election events

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Facebook: Russian agents created 129 U.S. election events By Dustin Volz and David Ingram A Facebook logo is seen at the Facebook Gather conference in Brussels, Belgium January 23, 2018. REUTERS/Yves Herman WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said Russian agents created 129 events on the social media network during the 2016 U.S. election campaign, according to testimony to Congress, shedding more light on Russia's purported disinformation drive aimed at voters. Facebook, in a written statement to U.S. lawmakers released on Thursday and dated Jan. 8, said that 338,300 different Facebook accounts viewed the events and that 62,500 marked that they would attend. The company said it did not have data about which of the events took place. Facebook, the world's largest social media network, said in September only that Russians had created "several promoted events." Copies of the event pages that have surfaced since then show that at least some of them were political rallies centered on divisive subjects, such as immigration. Russia denies the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies that it tried to meddle in American democracy. Facebook delivered the details to Congress this month in response to written questions from the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee. Facebook said that it had found "overlap" between the online marketing done in 2016 by Russian agents and by President Donald Trump's campaign and called it "insignificant." The company said it was not in a position to either substantiate or disprove allegations of collusion between the two camps. Trump denies any collusion and has described investigations by congressional panels and a special counsel as a witch hunt. Facebook has previously said some 126 million Americans may have seen Russian-backed political content on Facebook over a two-year period, and that 16 million may have been exposed to Russian information on Instagram. Facebook, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google testified about misuse of their services before three congressional committees in October and November. Also in its written response to follow up questions, Facebook said that last year it removed Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab from its list of free anti-virus offerings to users who go to the social media site from a computer that may be infected with malicious code. Facebook said it no longer provided Kaspersky Lab as a recommended anti-virus option but that it was "unable to easily reconstruct how many Facebook users downloaded Kaspersky software." Kaspersky Lab has repeatedly denied allegations by U.S. security officials that its software could enable Russian espionage, a fear that led to the U.S. government last year to ban the use of its products in federal computer networks. A Kaspersky spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the testimony. Facebook said it was also in the process of "phasing out internal use of a different Kaspersky antivirus product" that does not transmit data back to Kaspersky Lab. It did not name the product. In separate written responses, Google said Kaspersky Lab had not been approved for use in its corporate systems and that a review had not found any installation of its products. Twitter also said it did not use Kaspersky Lab. Facebook also said it would take "significant steps" in the coming weeks to notify users of an online tool it released last month that allows them to check whether they have followed or liked Facebook pages or Instagram accounts associated with the Internet Research Agency, a suspected Russian troll farm. by Anna @ Anna Wickham

You may consider uncovering your life purpose to be peripheral to your everyday life. It seems like something you might do once you get everything else in life figured out: once the kids grow up and your debt is paid off, or maybe once you find your soul mate who will take care of you, then

Trump ordered Mueller's firing, then backed off - New York Times

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Trump ordered Mueller's firing, then backed off - New York Times U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a working session with mayors at the White House in Washington, U.S., January 24, 2018. REUTERS/Yuri Gripas WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump last June ordered Special Counsel Robert Mueller fired but backed down after the White House counsel threatened to resign rather than follow his directive, The New York Times reported on Thursday, citing four people told of the matter. White House lawyers and press officials did not immediately reply to Reuters requests for comment. Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, learned of the incident in recent months as his investigators interviewed current and former senior White House officials in an inquiry into whether the president obstructed justice, the Times reported. Amid media reports that Mueller was looking into a possible obstruction case, Trump argued that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director had three conflicts of interest that disqualified him from overseeing the probe, two of the people said, according to the Times report. First, Trump said that a dispute years ago over fees at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, had led Mueller to resign his membership, the newspaper reported. The president also said Mueller could not be impartial because he had most recently worked for a law firm that previously represented the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Trump also said Mueller had been interviewed to return as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation the day before he was appointed special counsel in May, the Times reported, citing the two people. White House counsel Donald McGahn said he would quit rather than follow through on the order to fire Mueller, the Times reported, citing the people. McGahn disagreed with the president’s case for dismissing Mueller and told senior White House officials that firing him would have a catastrophic effect on Trump’s presidency and raise questions about whether the White House was trying to obstruct the Russia probe, according to the people cited by the Times. McGahn also told White House officials that Trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own, and the president then backed off his demand, according to the people, who the Times said spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation. Mueller was appointed special counsel in May by the Justice Department after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the agency's Russia investigation. Russia has denied any meddling and Trump has denied any collusion. Comey's firing is central to whether Trump may have committed obstruction of justice. Trump said on Wednesday he would be willing to be interviewed under oath by Mueller, and according to sources with knowledge of the investigation, Trump's attorneys have been talking to Mueller's team about an interview. How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

Millionaire sues London car dealer for £3.4million after he bought a hypercar 'he cannot drive'

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

A car dealer is being sued by a property tycoon who says he cannot drive his £3.4 million hypercar because of a problem with the documents he was given. Turkish multi-millionaire Tufan Kalman claims that in February last year he coughed up the staggering sum for a Pagani Zonda 760 Coupe. Just 13 of the a custom built bespoke Italian sportscar have ever been made. But he now wants a refund because he cannot legally drive it in Switzerland, where he lives. The cars, which have an eye-watering top speed of 218 mph, are extremely sought after by wealthy petrolheads. F1 star Lewis Hamilton was snapped in 2016 posing with a similar model that he owned. Mr Kalman has launched a High Court claim in a bid to force dealership, Pagani UK Ltd, of Park Royal, north west London, to give him his money back. In a writ issued at the court in London, Mr Kalman, who lives in Dornach, Switzerland, where he runs a property company, says that he paid £3.85m euros - about £3.4m - to the dealership for the car on 6 February last year, and took delivery six months later. But he now claims that his expensive boy toy "cannot be used" because the dealership have not given him the UK registration documents for the vehicle. "Without the original registration documents from the UK, Mr Kalman is unable to get the car registered in Switzerland. Hence the car cannot be used," the writ states. "To date Pagani UK Ltd has neither delivered the registration documents, nor repaid the purchase price," the document goes on. Because he cannot use the car, Mr Kalman is entitled to rescind the contract and claim his money back, his lawyers argue. The writ also claims that the dealers "offered to refund the purchase price if they did not deliver the original UK documents by the end of September 2017." And the writ alleges, "there is no legal basis allowing the defendant to keep the purchase price." Mr Kalman is also demanding interest at 8%, dating from November last year, and wants his money paid in Euros due to the dropping value of the pound. The writ states that, when it was bought, the car had not been registered "and no registration documents existed". Full article

No firm commitment to hold polls in Nov: Wissanu

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

No firm commitment to hold polls in Nov: Wissanu politics January 26, 2018 09:47 By KAS CHANWANPEN THE NATION Wissanu. MOST NLA MEMBERS BACK DELAY IN ENFORCEMENT OF MPS ELECTION LAW, EFFECTIVELY DELAYING ELECTION; DEMOCRAT LEADER SEES ‘HIDDEN AGENDA’ THE DEPUTY premier in charge of the government’s legal affairs said yesterday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had not signed any treaty committing him to hold the next election in November this year. Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam’s comments came as the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) debated the controversial move to delay by three months the enforcement of the MP election law, which potentially could delay the election. During several hours of debate, most NLA members agreed that a 90-day postponement was in keeping with the current circumstances. Some lawmakers suggested a longer period of postponement while others opposed any delay. Wissanu yesterday said Prayut had “just made a remark” when speaking about the tentative election schedule during his visit to the United States in October last year. “No treaty was signed. If he had to sign any agreement, the prime minister would have needed approval from the Cabinet. And he may have to inform the National Legislative Assembly, too,” he added. The deputy PM was speaking at Government House during his meeting with a large group of editors, columnists and reporters. He said “unforeseen factors” like the 90-day delay in the election law’s enforcement certainly would affect the original “road map” under which the next election was tentatively scheduled for November. But he did not think a delay could be viewed as “breaking a promise”. The deputy PM said foreign countries should understand that logic “unless they pretend not to get it”. Earlier, the US and the European Union separately called on the Thai government to comply with the road map and the November schedule promised by Prayut. Legislators yesterday spent many hours discussing the postponement of the election law’s enforcement. Some NLA members proposed a postponement of 120 or 280 days despite criticism that they were helping the junta stall the election. The issue was part of the stipulation in the MPs election bill, which was in the Assembly for the second and third readings. The deliberations started at 9.30am, but the NLA had not started voting on the second reading as of press time. The deadline for passage of the law is today, 60 days after the bill was submitted by charter drafters. The majority of the law-vetting committee insisted that without an enforcement delay, political parties would have difficulty making arrangements in time. There were several arrangements that political parties had to make to ensure their eligibility to run in the elections, the legislators argued. For instance, they had to hold primary elections and handle member registrations as required by law, they said. Seree Suwanpanon, a member of the committee, reiterated there were many things political parties had to get done before the election. The amendment to give them 90 extra days was well considered and aimed at helping the parties, he said. “There wouldn’t be enough time if we stuck to the previous stipulation. Parties wouldn’t be able to field candidates and then they would just blame us for having neglected this,” Seree said. He also insisted the enforcement delay had not been ordered by the junta, calling it “a rational choice”. Some legislators, such as Taweesak Sukawatin, proposed that enforcement of the law be delayed for 120 days. That would ensure not only the political parties but also Election Commission would have time to prepare for the poll, he said. The EC might face new challenges such as online campaigning, he said, adding that 120 days would be better as it would not be too tight, reducing the pressure. Meanwhile, a minority of the vetting committee – mainly from the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) – stuck to their view that the immediate enforcement of the election law would still give political parties enough time. CDC member Prapan Naigovit said the CDC considered 150 days provided for all sectors, as stipulated in the Constitution, was already flexible and sufficient for everyone to get ready for the national poll. Previous charters provided only 90 days, he added. Aside from the controversial delay in the enforcement, the NLA meeting yesterday also spent considerable time debating whether to ban people failing to exercise their voting rights from working in some areas in the government sector such as in Parliament. Some said the punishment would encourage voters to turn up while others viewed it as an infringement of rights. Some legislators argued that “no” vote could be a form of political expression, too. They should not be punished for such an action, they said. Another heated debate surrounded the stipulation on whether to allow recreation activities as part of the election campaign. One side said it could lead to vote buying and corruption, while the other pointed out that it was an incentive to draw people to participate in politics. Meanwhile, Democrat Party deputy leader Ong-art Klampaiboon said there was a hidden agenda behind the legislators’ postponement of the MPs election law’s enforcement. He added that the move by the committee vetting the bill was “unusual”. “People disagree with the postponement because they suspect a hidden agenda,” the veteran politician said, adding that “this cunning plot” was not necessary, as the new law could be allowed to take effect normally. Tambien baan is no longer accepted by DLT

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

The yellow tambien baan is no longer accepted by Department of Land and Transport (DLT). Today I wanted to extend my driving license(DL) at DLT in Pattaya and had the yellow house book with me as proof of residence, it was not accepted. They only accepted a Certificate of Residence (CR) from imigration, no tambien baan no thai ID-card not the old DL only the CR from imigration. I went down to Jomtien and handed in my passport, 3 photos and 600 baht, they asked me for prove of Residence, I showed my old driving license (which will soon expire) as proof and it was accepted. So DLT demands CR from imigration to give you a new DL and imigration demands a DL to give you a CR to show to DLT as proof.

Election delay inevitable as NLA passes MPs bill

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Election delay inevitable as NLA passes MPs bill By Kas Chanwanpen The Nation The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) late on Thursday passed the MPs election bill with a clause that delays it coming into effect for 90 days after its promulgation. The members voted 213 to zero with four abstentions. The bill was passed after almost 14 hours of deliberations on Thursday. In the second reading of the bill, the stipulation deferring its enforcement by three months after the law is published in the Royal Gazette was passed with 196 votes for, 12 against, and 14 abstentions. As a result of the new law, the next election, tentatively scheduled for November this year, could now be delayed until February next year. The majority of the law vetting committee members reasoned that political parties needed the additional time to make changes in accordance with the new regulations. For instance, they would need to hold primary elections. Also, new members would not be eligible to contest in the election unless their membership was at least 90 days old, the legislators argued. Some NLA members proposed an even longer postponement – by 150 to 180 days. The lawmakers also spent considerable time debating punishment for those failing to exercise their voting rights, as well as the appropriateness of using entertainment in election campaigns. The law vetting committee had proposed that voters who did not exercise their franchise should be disqualified from serving in some areas of the government sector such as in Parliament. The legislators, however, disagreed, saying the punishment was disproportionate and deprived people of their rights. Not voting was not necessarily a lack of interest in politics but could be a way of expressing discontent, they argued. The NLA eventually voted to only take away their right to appoint political officials and heads of local administration offices. The NLA also voted to allow entertainment or recreational activities during election campaigns, but capped the spending on such activities at 20 per cent of the total campaign budget. The charter drafters had sought a ban on entertainment activities in election campaigns, arguing it could be used for vote-buying and corruption. Other legislators viewed it as an attraction to draw people to take part in political activities. Following the passage of the bill, it would now be sent to the Election Commission and the Constitution Drafting Commission for review. After getting their nod, it would be sent to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to seek royal endorsement. If the two commissions disagreed, a joint committee would be set up to revise the law. The NLA is also deliberating the organic bill on the composition of the Senate today. It was the last one of the 10 organic laws. LIVE LIKE A LOCAL: RENT A SHORT-TERM APARTMENT WHILE TRAVELING

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

If you want to experience the true life of a place, experience it like a local: get an apartment in a true neighborhood. Wake up to the sounds of street vendors and garbage trucks. Be recognized with a smile by your local noodle-slinger.

If a city strikes your fancy, rent an apartment for a month and stick around for awhile.

Another advantage of worldwide Internet networking is that it allows us to exchange short-term apartments without going through an agent or company. Check the New York City craigslist sublet page and you’ll find plenty of Parisians happy to exchange their Left Bank apartment for a little temporary stepping stone on the Upper West Side. Though apartment exchanges are rare in Asia, there are plenty of expats and locals alike who will be vacating their adobe and happy to have someone trustworthy in ... Read More »

Offering brighter future, UK's Davis tries to convince on EU transition

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Offering brighter future, UK's Davis tries to convince on EU transition By Elizabeth Piper Britain's Secretary of State for the European Union David Davis arrives in Downing Street in London, January 16, 2018. REUTERS/Hannah McKay LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will only replicate the "effects" of the EU's customs union during a transition to a future relationship when the government will sign its own trade deals for the first time in 40 years, Brexit minister David Davis will say on Friday. In a speech aimed at Brexit campaigners who fear negotiators are being "cowed" by the European Union, Davis will say Britain can start negotiating, and even sign, trade deals during the transition phase, when little will change. Prime Minister Theresa May is coming under increasing pressure from those who voted to leave the EU at a referendum in June 2016, with some fearing that the expected transition agreement could pave the way for Brexit in name only. "Of course maintaining access to each other's markets on current terms means we will replicate the effects of the EU customs union during the implementation period," Davis will say in a speech in Middlesbrough, a town in northeastern England. "But participating in a customs union should not preclude us from formally negotiating - or indeed signing - trade agreements," he will say, while adding that any such deals could not be signed until the transition period has ended. There is little distance between Britain and the EU to overcome to agree the transitional deal, which will give the two sides time to prepare for the far-ranging impact of the end of more than 40 years of union. The EU set out its demands on Wednesday, and Davis is also expected to make Britain's demands in the speech. But the plan to change little of the current relationship after Britain formally leaves on March 29, 2019, has prompted concern among Brexit campaigners, who fear their mantra of "taking back control" is being sold out. On Wednesday, a hardline Brexit lawmaker from May's Conservative Party, Jacob Rees-Mogg, accused Davis of allowing Britain to become a "vassal state" to the EU by paying into the bloc and adhering to its laws during transition. It is a taste of things to come for a weakened May, who has struggled to keep her divided party and cabinet team of ministers united over everything from transition, to the future relationship, to the so-called Brexit dividend - the funds that will be freed up when Britain stops paying into EU coffers. But Davis will try to persuade them that the future relationship he is pressing for is well worth the wait. "As an independent country, no longer a member of the European Union - the United Kingdom will once again have its own trading policy," Davis will say. "For the first time in more than 40 years, we will be able to step out and sign new trade deals with old friends, and new allies, around the globe." Surakiart board on Myanmar says Richardson was asked to leave

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Surakiart board on Myanmar says Richardson was asked to leave By The Nation An advisory board chaired by Thai former foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai has lashed out at the recently resigned American member, Bill Richardson, saying his accusation that the board was “whitewashing” or “cheerleading” Aung San Suu Kyi over the Royingya crisis completely lacked legitimacy. In a statement late on Thursday, the board said Richardson, who is a long-time friend of Suu Kyi, had to be asked to leave the body. “The board feels that constructive and positive work can be done to help bring peace, reconciliation and economic progress for all communities in the Rakhine State,” the statement said. Richardson quit the board as he was incensed over the suppression of press freedom in Myanmar, among other issues. He accused Aung San Suu Kyi of lacking the sincerity and moral leadership to tackle the crisis. Richardson, a former governor of the US state of New Mexico and former US Ambassador to the United Nations, was one of five members who agreed to join the Advisory Board on the Implementation of Recommendations on Rakhine State last year. He publicly expressed concern that Surakiart was not “genuinely committed” to implementing the recommendations made last August, just as the current crisis erupted, by the Rakhine Advisory Commission led by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan. Nor did Richardson feel Surakiart was committed to addressing the root causes of the conflict in Rakhine. Surakiart “parroted the dangerous and untrue notion that international NGOs employ radicals and that the humanitarian agencies are providing material support to ARSA,” he said, referring to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, a militant group that launched attacks on Myanmar security outposts last summer. The attack ignited the exodus of over 640,000 refugees from Rakhine State to Bangladesh as well as atrocities against the displaced persons. Nay Pyi Taw and Dhaka agreed to repatriate them within two years. The process was supposed to begin on Tuesday but has been delayed due to the Rohingya refusing to return unless their human rights are recognised and with NGOs and the UN reporting ongoing burning of Rohingya villages along with killings and rape. In the statement, the board said it intended to engage in an open dialogue with all relevant stakeholders, although it recognised that it is not an investigatory body. “Its aim is to develop mutual trust and respect and to demonstrate our desire to understand the hopes, fears, and aspirations of the people of Rakhine and of Myanmar,” it said. Reacting to Richardson’s statement, it said the advisory board members met together with open minds, to listen to all perspectives, and to learn, in order to formulate their collective views. “We agreed to speak with one voice, and to provide our preliminary recommendations to the implementation committee in the next few months. It was the first time we had met in Myanmar. We had not yet agreed to submit any advice to the implementation committee. Therefore, any statement about the board ‘whitewashing’ or ‘cheerleading’ for anyone lacks complete legitimacy.” “The board was informed that one international member of the board, Mr Bill Richardson, had to be asked to leave,” the statement said. 5 of SAIGON’S BEST HIDDEN COCKTAIL BARS

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a place of surprises, much of them elusive to first-time visitors with just a few days on the ground. Though a bit challenging at first, Ho Chi Minh City eventually became our favorite city in the world and a base for many of our adventures in the Southeast Asian region. It’s also a pretty great place to go out and grab a drink, whether it’s a Monday or Saturday, Saigon’s music venues, breathtaking rooftop bars, and tiny neighborhood spots are buzzing.

Unlike the more world famous, easy-to-find spots of Bangkok and Shanghai, Saigon is a city of tight neighborhoods which unveil themselves only to those intrepid enough to explore the tiniest, faintest lines on the map. Saigon doesn’t have a Times Square or Pudong. It’s a megacity comprised of small, distinct districts and alleys. Perch ... Read More »

Man makes "extremely surprising" discovery after cutting his IKEA desk in half

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Everyone loves a bit of IKEA furniture. It can completely transform your home without breaking the bank. Most of us accept that the cheap and cheerful price tags normally mean it's probably not going to be made out of solid oak - but it does the job and it looks great. But one customer was still surprised when he saw exactly what his IKEA desk was made of. He was doing a bit of DIY with his desk, and decided to saw it in half. But when he looked at the two pieces afterwards, he was really surprised by what he saw. He posted photos on Twitter, and said: "I always knew that Ikea furniture was fake wood—particle board with a veneer on top. "Fine, whatever. "But last night I sawed into my desk and discovered the particle board *itself* is a lie. "FOLKS IKEA WOOD IS LITERALLY CARDBOARD." However he makes it clear that he's not angry or upset about it, just surpised. He later added: "To be clear, I don't have a problem with this: it's cheap, light, and works. "But it was extremely surprising!" He also pointed out that it makes modification slightly more tricky. Many people have also highlighted some of the positives of using cardboard. Full article

Feburic 80mg (Febuxostat)

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

As mentioned in another thread I take one tab of feburic daily. It aint cheap! Available only in my hospital, it used to cost me 166 baht each tab. Now it is government approved, and, with discounts, my cost is down to 115 baht. I've tried to source it outside the hospital without success. My first question - does anyone know a cheaper source in Thailand? Secondly, online enquiries to companies in India, where many generic drugs are manufactured at very cheap prices, elicited this response: Hello, Thanks for contacting us. Yes, we have Fabulas in stock. Kindly note the details below for Fabulas Medicine - Brand name - Fabulas Generic - Febuxostat Strength - 80 Mg Price - USD $ 8 for 30 tablets Form - Tablets Manufactured by - Intas. Kindly tell us the how many boxes you want to buy? Shipment Process:- Yes we can ship to Thailand. We use E.M.S- express mail service for shipping of goods. Delivery time required 5 to 12 days. Door step delivery at your place. The cost is a fraction of what I'm now paying, but questions arise about quality, legality, prescriptions, delivery methods, customs duty and reliability. Anyone bought items this way? OC

Quenching Thirst With Argentine Wines In The Burning Lands

by Forest Ray @ WanderGoGo

In Salta, a band of gauchos sing songs of loss and loneliness upon grasslands as vast as any sea and just as unforgiving. Festive families sing along and sometimes take to the floor to dance to the gauchos’ rhythm. The four of us share a bottle of wine and grow closer in the soft lights, festive sounds, and rich smells of the dining hall. Valhalla itself could not be so convivial. Wine is officially Argentina’s national drink. Although Argentine wines travel the globe, the overwhelming majority come from Mendoza, a smallish place in the heart of Argentina’s wine producing region. But what wines await in the rest of this expansive region? Fueled by curiosity and our shared love of wine, […]

And while the shock and cost of replacing your belongings is often the first thing to come to mind, the real tragedy is your lost data. Hundreds of photos and hours of video gone.
