Move Over Darts, Axe Bars Are Coming To Boston

by Tiffany @ Food Republic

It may sound like a popular pastime in the world of Game of Thrones or an attraction at your local Renaissance Faire, but nevertheless, throwing axes is looking to be a bit of a trend. Case in point? Two axe bars are coming to the Boston area this year. They’re exactly what they sound like: a space where beer […]

Saba Cafe: Great place for Vietnamese food

Saba Cafe: Great place for Vietnamese food

SFGate

When the owners of Saba Cafe in Redwood City renovated the space vacated by the vividly decorated Mexican restaurant Flaming Fresco, they went for white walls, clean lines and simple wooden chairs. Saba's dinner menu offers dishes for sharing - even the pho, for which servers are happy to bring an extra bowl. Baked sea bass and grilled vegetables ($14) form an austere, though still artistic, composition: three asparagus spears, three rounds of eggplant and three rounds of summer squash, topped with a rectangle of bright-pink fish rubbed with a spice mixture similar to that used in Chinese barbecued pork. The midday menu offers some different choices, including a well-balanced banh mi ($8-$10) on a soft French roll with crunchy pickles and cilantro; and vermicelli plates ($9-$10), a salad of cold rice noodles, grilled meat, herbs, pickles, peanuts and fried shallots. [...] after she brought out the sake carafe, I noticed a whiteboard with a list of cocktails and asked if they were made with soju; she said yes. Besides the sake and soju cocktails, which are not listed on the menu, Saba offers a small selection of wine and beer.

Vietnamese Herb Primer

Vietnamese Herb Primer

Viet World Kitchen

Vietnamese herbs are collectively known as rau thom, literally translated as fragrant leaves. "Rau" generically refers to leafy vegetables and "thom" means fragrant. Note that many of these herbs begin with the word "rau" to denote the full name. In daily conversation, however, it's okay to omit "rau" as people will still know what you're talking about! However, there are a few exceptions, such as rau ram, which you've got say both words for people to understand you. Eating and cooking Viet requires lots of fresh herbs. Some are easily recognizable, others will seem more exotic. Below are short discussion on the different kinds of herbs, how to use them and how to store them. All Consuming: The Temple Club worships Vietnamese food

San Francisco Chronicle

Geoffrey Deetz was last seen in these parts 16 years ago, running a handful of restaurants in the East Bay. Since we last met him, he's been living and working in Vietnam. It probably goes without saying, but a person does not usually linger in a place for a decade and a half unless he has fallen for its charms. Now Deetz is back in Oakland. He returned from Southeast Asia with such a craving for American hamburgers that he decided to open his own lunch counter. I'm kidding. He's here to cook Vietnamese food for us. I've come across patches of fine Vietnamese food in the Bay Area - a restaurant here and there in San Francisco, and a nice concentration of good spots in the South Bay.
