Good Morning Vietnam: Lost In The History Of Hanoi

Good Morning Vietnam: Lost In The History Of Hanoi

Lost In A New Direction

Arriving in Vietnam’s capital city was quite the experience for us… after two flights and a long day of sitting in airports, we made it to Hanoi. Grabbing a taxi into the city was not a pleasant affair whatsoever. Firstly, a random man wanted to take us miles away from the actual taxi queue to ‘his taxi’… which obviously wasn’t going to happen, so we jumped in an airport one after being told those cars were the ones to trust. Little did we know that we’d end up in a shouting match with the driver who immediately asked us for 650,000 Vietnamese Dong (VND) whilst driving off. I protested as the sign clearly stated the taxi’s were run by the meter. He went silent from there and carried on the journey. We were then dropped off randomly at the opening of a busy side street in the old city, however the driver then locked his doors and demanded 650,000 from us, despite the meter displaying that it was 360,000. His argument was that the fare was for two people… load of rubbish! Angrily, I threw the money at him and we got out of his car and grabbed our own […]

“I want to change someone’s entire life”

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, what matters is how many times you get up. I was getting my lashes done at Laura’s Beauty & Wellness at home in Helsinki. The owner, Laura, with her pink hair and tattooed arms, was excited to share with me her dreams and goals, which in general I value but I had had a terrible day and all I really wanted was to shut up and take a nap. Little did I know I was on a date with destiny. “My dream is to change someone’s entire life”, Laura said to me as she explained to me her passion for personal training and life coaching, for helping people achieve their biggest dream. Something in me stopped, but I somehow didn’t manage to get a word out of my mouth. How could I tell this stranger I was the one she was looking for? How could I tell her she was meant to change my life? And that I had been looking for her for some time now. For a couple of years now I’ve dreamed of being able to get a team of health professionals to help me on the road to recovery. I […]

Sunday Morning Green Smoothie Bowl

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

There’s nothing better than a slow Sunday morning in bed after a busy week and before another busy week.  I started today by blending a fabulous super healthy green smoothie bowl and sipped some cappuccino while catching up on my favorite blogs. It was already years ago that I got addicted to green smoothies in all forms, but the more vegetables and seaweeds the merrier to me. Especially as sometimes it’s hard to eat healthy on the road, grabbing a green smoothie here and there is the easiest way to get in those nutrients. I usually make my smoothie bowls vegan, but today I have some Greek Yoghurt in the mix which can easily be substituted with a vegan yogurt or quark. I rarely look at recipes for my smoothie bowls, but instead just throw in the blender whatever I can grab from the fridge. Oh well, if I did that literally my bowl might have had some sparkling wine and feta cheese in it too – so I actually do have a base on how I build my bowl. I start with a hearty fruit like banana or avocado, then add something green such as kale or spinach. Next […]

One of the more renowned tourist spots in the British Virgin Islands is a located about a mile from Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda. Ha Long Bay: A Great Wonder Of The World

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

When you think of Vietnam, or when you see pictures of the country, the most iconic image will probably be taken from Ha Long Bay. To see one of the great wonders of the world is a dream for many people. It certainly had been scribbled down from day one on our travel bucket list back in the days of planning and it’s pretty safe to admit that it did not disappoint. In fact, it was genuinely the most incredible place I have ever seen in my life and one of the most memorable experiences I’ll ever have. We booked our 1 night, 2 day tour through Galaxy Cruises as it had been highly recommended by our Hanoi hotel staff. They were excellent in helping us choose the right cruise for us and made sure we got a good deal. They organised everything which was so helpful, as many tour offices in the city will scam you or sell you an exaggerated trip that will not meet your expectations. I read a fair few reviews from people who had been ripped off so was pretty apprehensive to book elsewhere. Our coach picked us up right on time and we were introduced […]

My day: Video shooting in Stockholm

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

With three phones and five alarms in total, I was set to get up early enough for a busy day of business in Stockholm last Saturday. Lucky my new Huawei Mate 10 Pro has such a soothing song as an alarm, waking up doesn’t feel half as bad as it did before even if I have to be a human before the sun even rises. I jump out of bed and drag myself to the cab waiting for me outside and meet my film crew at the airport. It’s only a 45-minute flight to Stockholm and we spend it going through the day ahead while I try to replace the blood in my veins with caffeine. On my second cup of coffee, the sky starts to clear out and the sun rises above the clouds. I cannot stop snapping photos of this favorite view of mine, while the businessman behind me probably wonders it must be my first flight. So what did we film in Stockholm all day? Well, as a professional blogger and social media consultant my phone is often my most important work tool – often even more important than my laptop. I demand a lot of my […]

Seitsemän syytä ihastua Osakaan

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

1. Osaka tarjoaa suuren ja pienen kaupungin parhaat puolet Osaka on vähän sellainen Japanin Turku – hyvällä tavalla. Osakassa on kaikki japanilaisen suuren kaupungin hyvät puolet; herkullisia ravintoloita, shoppailumahdollisuuksia ja yöelämää vaikka aamuun saakka. Osaka on kuitenkin huomattavasti Tokiota pienempi ja kaupunkiin tutustuminen ei vaadi pitkiä hämmentäviä metromatkoja. Osakassa kaupungin tunnelma on yleisesti huomattavasti Tokiota rennompi. Rakastan tosin molempia, don’t get me wrong. Lue vinkit Tokioon täältä. 2. Maailman paras jälkiruoka; MELONIPULLA Jos et ole koskaan maistanut japanilaista melonipullaa, have you even lived? 3. Osaka tarjoaa täydellisen matkan japanilaisten makujen maailmaan Japanilainen ruoka on ainakin omasta mielestäni maailman parasta heti vietnamilaisen ja thaimaalaisen ruoan rinnalla. Oi maukas ihana Aasia. Tällä Japanin matkalla tuli myönnettäköön maistettua myös muutamia hieman turhan autenttisia annoksia kauempana maaseudulla, mutta yleisesti ottaen ei ole […]

Kuala Lumpur: Skyscrapers, Shopping & Well… Shopping

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

Life is short & the world is wide… This electric city really has the best mix of everything you could possible want from a short stay trip. The vibrant blend of colourful street markets, hipster bars, deliciously authentic eateries really brings a wow factor to such a magnificent capital. The contrasting wondrous skyscrapers that pervade the city streets add to this diverse and energetic city.  It’s easy to admit I was somewhat hesitant before arriving to Malaysia. Bangkok really was an unpleasant experience owing to the overcrowding and pollution that consumed the entire city. Not to mention Gary’s unfortunate food poisoning incident (wow, that feels like a lifetime ago now)… I was worried we could be in for much the same with another city stopover.  To our delight, Kuala Lumpur, without a shadow of a doubt was completely the opposite. In fact, it turned out to be one of our favourite destinations! It’s difficult to describe the atmosphere of this city without actually taking time to absorb it for yourself. Never have I seen such contrasting situations to be in. One minute you can be walking through quaint markets at the local’s pace and then, the next thing you know […]

Adventure, is that you?

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

After a few weeks of suffering from Dengue fever at home, I’m finally back in my game and feeling almost back to normal. And I must say that I’m finally feeling happy and at peace after a pretty hard summer to say the least – life simply feels pretty amazing right now. The best thing about this year has been the adventures it came with though, all over the world from Europe to Australia and from Asia to the United States – next year it’s time for Africa, hey? Before this year ends though, there are at least these four more adventures to come. 1. Stockholm I haven’t spent enough time in my favorite city Stockholm this year, which I need to change quickly. I was in Stockholm twice this year, first a couple of nights while on my way to Sydney in the spring. Then again for a weekend in summer to attend a blogger event and Celine Dion concert. But luckily I have a sudden work trip to Stockholm next week Saturday – it will be a quick one, but I’m always so happy to go to Stockholm. And this trip will be something really really exciting, but […]

Sunrise in Florida: How did I get so lucky?

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

I feel the first rays of the morning sun hugging my blanket inviting itself to my hotel room. It’s only six in the morning, but the thought of the Gulf of Mexico just behind my door makes me feel more than ready for the day ahead. I pack my cameras and tripod and take a morning walk on the beach. There’s nobody else yet – just me, the pelicans and the most fairytale-like sunrise I have ever seen. The sand at Clearwater Beach here in Florida is so white it looks almost like snow. How did I get so lucky? I left Finland in such a hurry the other day to get on my flight from Helsinki to Tampa Bay via Reykjavik with Icelandair that by morning I didn’t even remember I had made my way to the USA again. How has a life like this become a norm for me in the past years? Before, there was no way I could have even dreamed of a life like this. Of a life where catching a long haul flight is almost as normal as catching a local bus in town. But it doesn’t mean travel has become boring. Never. I would […]

Siem Reap: A Rural Charm With A Touch Of Madness

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted as the internet has not been a good friend since leaving Phnom Penh. The toughest part of blogging really is finding that golden WIFI which makes life a whole lot easier… Moving on anyway, here’s an update on what the two of us have been getting up to! Our Cambodian adventure continued with travelling to Siem Reap, the most iconic place to visit in all of Cambodia. We decided against our original plan to fly there (domestic flights are not as cheap as you would think) and booked a coach ride with Giant Ibis Coaches – such an amazing find at only £20 for the two of us. The ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap was actually really enjoyable. I anticipated a stuffy and noisy 6 hour coach ride however, I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and air-conditioned the bus was. Plus we got some snacks and made a few rest stops on the way which broke up the long journey. The Cambodian countryside was really interesting to see along the way. We’d been so used to seeing such built up areas, it was refreshing to sit back and gaze out […]

10 unforgettable experiences in North Iceland

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

*In collaboration with Icelandair & North Iceland North Iceland may just be the most enchanting place I’ve ever traveled to. As I’ve noted earlier this year, travelling to Iceland is like travelling to another planet and this thought only got stronger. We flew from Helsinki to Reykjavik with Icelandair and connected to Akureyri on Air Iceland. There is so much to see and explore in North Iceland, but here are the ten most unforgettable experiences from our trip to this fabulous part of the planet.  1. Whale safari in Dalvik Iceland might just be the best place for a whale safari and the rumor has it there is no place like Dalvik. Arctic Sea Tours took us on a little adventure on rib boat around the Atlantic shore. Riding the waves on the rib boat was already fun enough, but nothing takes your breath away like suddenly being surrounded by a pod of 15 humpback whales. In Dalvik it’s pretty much 100% that you’ll see some whales on your safari and we were lucky to spot close to 50 on our tour. In addition to humpback whales, we also spotted some white arctic dolphins. If you are really lucky, you may […]

Good Morning Vietnam: Lost In The History Of Hanoi

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

Falling in Love with Napa

Falling in Love with Napa

by Kat Reagan Waldrip @ Wander - Wander Life Coconut Creamer

One of my many New Year's resolutions is to be more content in the present. It has been a resolution every year since I can remember due to my tendency to always be looking towards the future. I have a bad (or good, depending on who you ask) habit of always looking to the next thing, usually looking forward to what trip I can plan next. As I sit drinking my coffee this morning, I realized that the first half of my year of trips is somewhat planned out - but I don't have anything planned for the Fall!!! Woe is me. (I also realize this makes me sound super bratty, but my passion is travel. I don't splurge on fancy cars, clothes, or material items specifically because my priority has, and always will be, travel. I also don't have children so I am taking advantage of this responsibility-less time of my life.)

Koh Phangan: The Prettiest Roads That I Ever Did See

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

We left Koh Tao and caught the afternoon ferry to our last destination in the gulf island region of Thailand – Koh Phangan. Sadly my 3 night experience staying on the island was not so great, as I became very ill after leaving Koh Tao and spent the majority of my time here feeling mighty sorry for myself, tucked up in bed with a stomach bug (I’ll spare the gory details) However, I will share with you all a few of the sights I did manage to see as I struggled out of bed, making the best of a very inconvenient situation. I guess sickness does come with travel territory and one should expect it from time to time, whilst being away for so long. Our choice of accommodation for staying on the island was literally a backpackers paradise. The Shiralea resort was a steal for around £8-10 a night. Unluckily for me, I definitely found it challenging living in such basic conditions whilst feeling poorly and probably would of embraced the jungle living far more if I’d felt more myself. The setting is pretty much what you’d expect from such a place. Situated in the midst of the wilderness, you can stay […]

Chiang Mai Elephant Nature Park: Rescued Lives & A New Perspective

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

Today was seriously one of the best days of our whole trip so far. We were both so lucky to grab one of the few spaces available to visit the most spectacular Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai – one of the only ethical and animal friendly parks in Asia. Our fantastic tour guide (Goy) picked us up from our hotel early in the morning and we set off on the long drive to the Chiang Mai mountains. On the way, Goy told us all about what the park does for the rescued elephants and how the sanctuary is now a home for 64 elephants, over 400 rescued dogs, cats, boars, pigs… you name it, they had it! The park was opened in 1995 and originally had only 4 elephants… The owner apparently is running low on space and her hope is to open even more sanctuaries across Asia. The aim of the sanctuary is to save the remaining Asian elephants who are being used, abused and subjected to a brutal life of work through the likes of trekking, street begging and logging. Many people in Thailand own their elephant, much like owning a dog or a cat, therefore there is little than can […]

It is a very small island but perhaps that is what I enjoyed about it - so relaxed! The Cooper Island Beach Club has been adorably renovated in recent years and houses a coffee shop, boutique, rum bar, and restaurant. We had some great tartare at the restaurant and some gelato from the coffee shop to finish off our meal!

Woop wooop! I have finally arrived to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam! I am here with a few other travel bloggers and a lot of media to attend ITE HCMC, the major travel expo in the Mekong region. You can read more about it from my previous blog post. Yesterday, I flew from Helsinki to Singapore with Finnair, and from there onwards to Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines – which for now is my final destination. I have to also note already – Vietnam Airlines was the best economy flight experience I’ve yet ever had. The service was so kind and professional, the food was super yummy and spicy, and the seats on this A321 were unusually comfortable. I will write a review of the flight experience later! Today, my plan is to go explore the exciting city of Saigon in a couple of hours. But for now I am just staring at the world go by from me hotel room on the 20th floor of the out-of-this-world-fabulous Le Méridien Saigon. I think I like it here so much that it’s going to be hard not to just stay in the room… Luckily the conference has even organised each one …

Running my own Business 2017: Income Report

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

Wait what, 2017 is coming to end already? How did that happen? I just blinked my eyes and boom we are here again. The time has come for the next yearly income report after yet another fabulous year as a full-time entrepreneur running my one-woman show of social media consulting, PR and travel blogging. So let’s get to the point. What do I do for a living and how much exactly did I earn this year? Yes I talk numbers. I never understood what makes money such a sneaky little secret.  Updating client’s Instagram accounts on a hotel bed in Asia (ps. I’m not naked haha) 1.Social media consulting: € 42, 700 Social media consulting is definitely the most important part of my income and realising that has me madly motivated to become even more of a wizard on this topic next year. I usually keep 1-3 monthly clients and run their social media by taking photos, writing posts, advertising and reporting for the client once per month. A big part of this job is also helping brands with influencer marketing from planning campaigns to finding the right influencers.  Morning office at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City where […]

Phnom Penh: The Agonizing Truth & Most Heartbreaking Past

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

Be grateful for every second of every day that you get to spend with the people you love. Life is so very precious   There are some things in life that you will see and you will never forget. You’ll carry those images through your entire life and they will never leave your thoughts. Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia done just that to me. Never have I witnessed such a harrowing and distressing history in just one place. A place where millions of lives were cruelly snatched in the most inhumane and barbaric manner possible. Imagine living in a world where 1 in 4 people that you knew were callously murdered. Your friends, your family, even your own babies…This is exactly what happened in Cambodia during the relentless ruling of Pol Pots, the leader of the Khmer Rouge – a group of followers of the communist party of Kampuchea. Pol Pots, a leader who ferociously orchestrated the Cambodian genocide during the years of 1975-1979, was responsible for the 3 million innocent people who lost their lives – almost a quarter of the country’s population, gone… Gary and I decided to start our Cambodian tour in Phnom Penh for […]

Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay : Day 7

by Kat Reagan Waldrip @ Wander - Wander Life Coconut Creamer

A quick side note about seasickness : I purchased a couple of ReliefBands for James and I after doing a bit of research on the best methods to combat nausea. Dramamine is another option but is known to cause drowsiness, so I wanted to find a method that let me be wide awake and fully enjoy my experience aboard! Needless to say, the RefliefBands have worked impeccably the last few days. They even helped me not be so queasy when I was hungover! Serious score. I seriously suggest these, as they are comfortable, easy to use, and start working immediately. There is no worse way to ruin your trip than by being uncontrollably nauseous the whole time. And no, this is not a paid advertisement - they simply work.

Chiang Mai: The Hub Of Culture & The Heart Of Thailand

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

I never thought I would admit to becoming too accustomed to seeing pretty beaches however, after 3 blissful weeks on the beautiful Thai island’s, it was time to travel to the foothills of Northern Thailand to reach the amazing city of Chiang Mai – Thailand’s 2nd biggest and most culturally significant city. It was great to actually be away from the beach (shock I know) and finish off our Thailand tour in this wonderful place. Our choice of accommodation was one of my favourite hotel’s to date. We arrived mid-afternoon and were greeted by the wonderful family who run the Yindee Stylish Guesthouse, located in the old city area of Chiang Mai. Our room was not quite ready for us, so we sat in the cosy reception area and spoke to one of the sons, who gave us many recommendations of what to do during our stay. They had fresh coffee and bananas for us plus their two adorable cats (who also live in the house) sat with us as we waited. The family were just so humble and welcoming which made our stay here extra special. Our Yindee Guesthouse was perfectly nestled in the heart of the old city, situated down a one lane […]

Hoi An: Floating Candles, Glowing Lanterns, An Untouched Beauty

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

Travelling- It can leave you speechless, then turn you into a storyteller… Since planning our trip many months ago, Hoi An always remained at the top of my list for places to visit. The little Vietnamese town just looked so picturesque and unlike many other developed places in the world. Places that have have been doomed to the curses of pollution and commercialisation. With only 120,000 inhabitants, the city has been titled as a world heritage site by UNESCO. We arrived at our pretty hotel situated right in the middle of Hoi An’s ancient town. The Vinh Hung 2 is a stunning hotel, filled with character from top to bottom. A bonus for us was having an amazing courtyard swimming pool – perfect for cooling off from the scorching Vietnam temperatures. Our room was also very nice with a little balcony facing the outskirts of the ancient town. We did had a few incidents here which damaged our first interpretations of the hotel. Despite it’s beauty, the service was pretty crap. We paid a little more to stay in a nice hotel and sort of expected better. The room services were particularly bad as they kept forgetting to clean our […]

Beginner's Guide to Denver

Beginner's Guide to Denver

by Kat Reagan Waldrip @ Wander - Wander Life Coconut Creamer

The first time I visit a new city, I like to get some of the more "touristy" items checked off the list (read my post about why it's perfectly ok to be a "tourist"). My theory, is that oftentimes the more well-known spots are well-known for a reason : i.e. because they're great! Now, I know this isn't always the case. I can't tell you how many times I have been underwhelmed by a city's biggest attraction or how often TripAdvisor or a well-intentioned blogger has steered me wrong.

My typical work week home in Helsinki

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

I’ve been getting several requests to also write about my work life as a blogger and a social media consultant, and not just about all the wonderful destinations I get to explore – which is fair enough, as I also love to see behind the scenes blogposts from the bloggers that I follow. So, this week I’ve tried to carry my tiny little Canon Powershot with me to capture moments of my normal week when I’m just working at home in Helsinki. This week has been very typical, though this kind of a career comes with surprising adventures, such as did this week too. Slow mornings and nutritious breakfast at home I’ve become to love mornings, though admittedly sometimes I take them a tad too slow – so I’m definitely not the one to go for a jog at 6 am, that’s definitely not what I mean. What I mean is that I try to get up the minute my phone rings around 7-8am and not stay under covers staring at all things social media. My Personal Trainer Laura has also inspired me to start my mornings with a little gratitude practice, so I start mine with a little 5-minute […]

Le Family Riders: The Road From Hue To Hoi An

by SHenderson19 @ Lost In A New Direction

When travelling, it’s important to embrace every moment. Even if that means sleeping on a 12 hour night train in a cabin with strangers. Our Hanoi hotel had kindly organised overnight train tickets for us to get to the next stop of our Vietnam tour – the old capital city of Hue. Hue wasn’t even on our original agenda however, we decided to stopover for a couple of nights before reaching Hoi An. Vietnam is much larger than you’d expect as we were originally going to also explore the South. Sadly, we haven’t had enough time to do so and therefore we decided to stick to the north and middle of the country. The south of Vietnam is already on my next travel list, if we are lucky enough to return. I would say this is a country which defies expectations and you really do have to come here to see just how beautiful it actually is. The night train was not as bad as we were initially expecting. We were in a 4 person sharer and paid slightly more for the privilege as the other option would have been a 6 person cabin. I can only imagine how little […]

Take me back to Chiang Mai, please

by Veera Bianca @ VEERA BIANCA

It was about a year ago today when I set for the adventure of a lifetime and moved to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand for few months. I had the idea of living in Chiang Mai stuck in my head since years before, since I first ever attended some travel blogging conferences around the world – it just felt like everyone I met was living the dream, travelling the world and being a digital nomad based in Chiang Mai. I wanted to live that dream too. So a few years later after becoming a fulltime blogger and a social media wizard, it was about time to make the dream reality for me too. So I set off for a life in Chiang Mai for a part of last winter. Now a year later I’m back living in Helsinki and it just started to snow for the first time this upcoming winter. And my mind races back to the heat of Thailand. As a matter of fact, it’s been several years since I’ve seen the first snow falling down in Finland as I’ve somehow always managed to be travelling somewhere when it has happened. While the view outside my window is […]

Everest Base Camp!

Everest Base Camp!

by Lisa Kaplan @ "Why Wait?" World Tour

We are feeling pretty relaxed right now, after a pre-trek massage, but it’s been a hectic 2 days to get to this point and an ambitious 3 weeks ahead of us.

We landed in Kathmandu on Tuesday night.  We had read a blog post about arriving at the airport, painting a picture of sheer and utter chaos that Ruben assumed was far fetched.  And then we got on the bus from the plane to the terminal.  As we were getting pushed and shoved from all sides, a young Nepalese woman looked at us and said “Get used to this.  It’s worse once we get into the terminal. Wait until baggage claim.”  We made it through the visa process and immigration unscathed but then baggage claim and the scrum for a taxi lived up to its billing.  Men grabbing at luggage that belonged to someone else; people shouting; no one adhering to any sense of personal space.  And outside it was even worse.  “Where you go?”  “You need a taxi?” coming at us from all sides.  Throngs of people everywhere, again with zero sense of personal space. Dust and dirt.  And more dust and dirt.  We argued with a few taxi drivers – and each other – and finally agreed on a price and found ourselves in a tiny car, driving down narrow streets, narrowly missing other cars, scooters and even the occasional wall.

Kathmandu is quite possibly THE DIRTIEST, DUSTIEST place we have ever been.  Narrow roads are occasionally paved, but are often dirt or rubble. There is garbage everywhere, sometimes on fire. There is stench mixed with wafts of curry. But if you can look past the grime there is a haunting beauty to the city.  The architecture is striking, albeit decrepit.  But we are not here for the city.  The mountains are calling.

First we needed to decide where to trek.  We knew we wanted to go to Everest Base Camp, but there are route options.  Most people fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, known to be one of the scariest airports to land in, and hike from there.  Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary hiked in from Jiri, a 8+ hour bus ride from Kathmandu.  It adds 5-7 days to the trek.  If it’s good enough for the first Everest Expedition, it’s good enough for us.  From Everest Base Camp, you can return along the same route or go across the Chola Pass to Gokyo Lake, before returning to Lukla.  The views along this route are legendary.  We have the time.  We will do the circuit, and then fly out from Lukla.  Twenty-one days, give or take.

Then we needed to decide how to trek.  Our options:

·      With a group on an organized trek

·      With a local company that would arrange all of the details and provide a guide and/or porter

·      By ourselves – with or without a guide and/or porter

We decided on the last option: organize and plan the trek ourselves, possibly hiring a guide once we arrive in Lukla, but with no porter.  That means 9-12Kg on our backs, all day, every day. With no one to make any arrangements for us, we hit the ground running.

First stop, Shona’s, a local trekking outfitter in Thamel, to buy all of the gear we don’t have – heavy gloves, trekking poles, a headlamp, extra socks – and to rent sleeping bags.  Next, the office of permits and licenses – despite needing 2 different permits and our TIMS cards, a fairly painless process.  Then the bus station to buy the bus tickets on the local bus to Jiri.  And the supermarket for baby wipes (no hot showers above 4000M), tiger balm and CANDY!  The trek runs village to village, staying in tea houses along the way.  Food, water, lodging all get more expensive as you climb, so our packs are loaded with chocolate for a daily treat.

So here we are, the night before departure.  Nervous and excited.  Our bus leaves tomorrow at 7:30am.  We will spend the night in Jiri and hit the trail on Saturday, April 22.  Hopefully you will hear from us again in three weeks!
