Looking for last-minute ideas for a favorite cook? That may entail gifting yourself (!), a friend, or family member. This year, I found myself obsessing about certain kitchen tools and cooking appliances. Maybe it was an escape from the political roller coaster that we’ve all been on — no matter what your affiliation or inclination...

Recommended Autism Resources for Developing Critical Thinking Skills

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The neurobiological disorder known as autism is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Treatment and educational needs are often very similar for these conditions, even though there are subtle differences and degrees of severity among the disorders. Autism affects a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.

The general term “autism” is often used either specifically to refer to Autistic Disorder (AD) or more generally to refer to ASD. Another term that is often used synonymously with ASD is Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). This term is simply the diagnostic category heading under which five specific diagnoses are listed. The different diagnostic terms that fall under the broad meaning of PDD / ASD, include:

• Autistic Disorder (AD)
• Asperger’s Disorder
• Rett’s Disorder
• Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
• Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

Autism disorders can usually be diagnosed by age 3; parents are usually the first to notice unusual behaviors in their child or a failure to reach appropriate developmental milestones.

If a child is diagnosed with autism, early intervention is critical. Although parents may have concerns about labeling a toddler “autistic,” the earlier the diagnosis is made, the earlier interventions can begin. There are no effective means to prevent autism, no completely effective treatments, and no known cure. Research indicates that early intervention, in an appropriate educational setting, for at least two years of preschool, can result in significant improvements for many young children with autism disorders. Effective programs focus on developing communication, social, and cognitive skills.

While products from The Critical Thinking Co.™ weren’t initially developed with autistic children in mind, over our 50-year history producing award-winning books and software, we’ve discovered (thanks to our customers) there are several titles parents with autistic children and teachers of autistic students find to be essential resources.

Many of our books and software programs can help children and adults living with autism. The Mind Benders® series presents challenging deductive reasoning activities for autistic children and adults. Building Thinking Skills® provides a comprehensive mix of visual-spatial and verbal skill development, highly recommended for teaching children and adults with autism. Math and Reading Detective® books and software can help children in grades 3 through 8, fine-tune reading comprehension and critical thinking skills in the content areas. Memory Challenge® software is an excellent tool for developing and testing visual memory skills. Visual Perceptual Skill Building® develops recognition of letters, words, numbers, and similar/dissimilar objects. It also improves sequencing and visual memory skills. Hands-On Thinking Skills uses manipulatives and helps non-verbal children increase their skills.

Here's what some of our customers have said regarding the use of our products with autistic children.

Carrie, a proud parent from Pennsylvania, said, "My son (10) is on the autism spectrum. He has a brilliant mind for facts and figures, but always struggled with his thought process. Mind Benders® and Building Thinking Skills® have given him solid direction in organizing his thoughts and following logical patterns. The progress my son has made in barely one year is incredible. No therapy or modification has come close to having such an impact in the 6 years since his diagnosis. There are no words to express how thankful we are for The Critical Thinking Co.™."

"My daughter, age 14, has PDD/Autism. Also, she has an accompanying non-verbal learning disorder (this doesn't mean she doesn't talk; it means that she has trouble interpreting body language and other non-verbal information). Something she has always struggled with has been visual problem solving. We have been using The Critical Thinking Co.™ materials since she was small, as they were the only materials that broke down tasks into small enough chunks for her. As she has grown older, we have also been using the software, most recently the new Building Thinking Skills® software. The Mind Benders® software also presented many challenging visual-puzzle activities, and we have used all of the Math and Reading Detective® software to help her fine-tune her critical thinking skills in the content areas. When she was 12, I purchased [other] software… but The Critical Thinking Co.™ activities were more varied to hold her interest, and much more reasonably priced. The materials haven't 'cured' my daughter, of course, but they have helped her stick with practicing her skills even when it is difficult. She 'asks' to play the second Building Thinking Skills® software nearly every day. Thank you!" said parent Sandy from Maryland.

Polly Brophy from the LA Unified School District said, “I’m a special education teacher. I was surprised when my supervisor recommended I use The Critical Thinking Co.™ products for children below grade level. She said your books aren’t just for the gifted, and she was so right. Reading Detective® is wonderful for building verbal reasoning skills. One of my autistic students said the other day after finishing a lesson in Reading Detective®, ‘I can’t believe I can do this. I’m so proud!’ At first it wasn’t easy for them. Then they learned how to eliminate the wrong answers. Now some of them have gone up two whole grade levels. I wouldn’t have believed it was possible.”

“I am a very experienced teacher and cognitive trainer. One of my students was in the Special Education program for years; after working with the Building Thinking Skills® books he returned to grade level in seven months,” said Claudette Anderson, of Prescription for Success Learning Center in Parker, Colorado. “I have worked with various brands of thinking skills materials, but The Critical Thinking Co.™ has the best on the market."

“The Critical Thinking Co.™… is a breath of fresh air in a special needs market that too often finds publishers focused on isolated skills rather developing students’ flexible thinking ability,” said John Alexander, executive director of Chartwell School for language learning disabilities, Seaside, California.

Whether your child with autism is 18 months old, or 18 years old, he or she will still benefit from therapy. Early intervention is always helpful, but you're not too late to make a difference in life of your child.

As with all students, but especially autistic children, we highly recommend finding out what the student’s strengths and interests are and emphasize them in your lessons to increase engagement and retention. This simple approach approach builds confidence and nurtures a love of learning.

Test Prep Guide for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) and Testing Talented and Gifted (TAG)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The GATE and TAG are two of the most common tests administered to find out if your child qualifies for a gifted program. The acronym GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) and TAG (Talented and Gifted) can be used for a specialized school program or for a group of tests that are taken for entry into a gifted and talented program.

These programs are offered during and after school and involve a differentiated curriculum. This specialized curriculum usually compacts and accelerates the typical grade-level course work, making content much more difficult. Some programs are one to two grade levels above standard public school education. Deeper analysis in specialized subject matter will demand higher-level thinking such as analysis, evaluation and synthesis.

How are students identified for the GATE/TAG programs? Many school districts offer opportunities for children to take a test such as the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT), Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) or Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test (NNAT). The test score is then used to decide whether a child qualifies for a GATE/TAG program.

The terms GATE and TAG are not used universally. Private and public school districts may have a specific name for their gifted program (such as Spectrum, Honors, Advanced or Enrichment), or refer to it by the name of the school where the accelerated program is offered.

If you find out that your school will be testing for its GATE/TAG program you may be able to find more information from the school psychologist or district Web site about time, place and content of the tests.

By introducing your child to a wide range of thinking skills and activity formats covered on most IQ and achievement tests, infused with standards-based curriculum, you will provide invaluable preparation that will that will lead to higher test scores, and success beyond the test date.

The Critical Thinking Co.™ now offers Test Prep bundles for GATE/TAG programs. These new book bundles include award winning titles with a proven success record in test preparation.

After learning which specific test your child will take to qualify for the GATE/TAG program at your school, be sure to use our test prep guide online to learn more about the test.

Try our easy-order bundles by age/grade, or simply choose items that your children will enjoy at a skill-appropriate level that you think will challenge them. Free printable samples are available for all our materials so you can try before you buy.

Test Prep Bundles and Suggested Test Prep Plan for GATE/TAG

We recommend working with the bundles over at least a six-week period, but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice. If you are really pressed for time, and you see the student has mastery in a section, you may skip ahead. You may also want to bookmark and return to activities that are more challenging.

One way to measure the mastery is to use the first few items in each activity as a pre-test. If you see that your children answers quickly and correctly, you may want to consider moving on. If they struggle, go through the activities as best you can, but bookmark them and consider going back over the material. Using the pre-test technique will give you a good idea of where the child’s strengths and weaknesses are across the skills and abilities the material covers.

The bundles offer a lot of material, but if you make working with the books part of the daily routine, you’ll be surprised how fast things will move. Remember, the youngest students have shorter attention spans, so 15 minutes a session is fine.

It is also important to point out that all the titles have value well beyond the testing window. Each title will help enhance your child’s ability to reason and analyze, skills that are essential for success in many arenas.

Off the Beaten Path in Sicily: Palermo’s Qanats

by Jennifer Raezer @ Approach Guides

The qanat (pronounced ka-naht) is an Arab-designed underground canal/irrigation system that directs water from a high-elevation aquifer water source to a town or agricultural area along a perfectly-calculated and very slight downward grade (see illustration). Invented by the Persians in 1000 BCE and functioning as a “below-ground aqueduct,” it is ideally suited to warm, dry […]

Test Prep Guide for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® (WISC®)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

One of the most widely used intelligence tests is the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® or WISC®. The current version of the test, WISC®–IV, is often used as an entrance exam for gifted and talented programs; it can also be used as part of the entrance process at private schools. The WISC®-IV assessment was written by David Wechsler and is published by NCS Pearson, Inc. (previously Harcourt Assessment, Inc./The Psychological Corporation, the original publisher of the test).

Like other indexes, the WISC® assessment assesses skills and abilities, rather than grade-level knowledge. The test’s propensity toward skills and abilities make for a test-taking experience that is unlike the statewide exams and nationally normed tests (ITBS®, Stanford 10, etc.) that are familiar to most students. Thus, preparing for the types of items encountered on the WISC® assessment is essential. There are some subtests that do assess prior knowledge, and those are outlined below.

There are 16 subtests on the WISC®-IV assessment. Here’s a look at what the subtests assess:

Block Design measures an individual’s ability to analyze and synthesize an abstract design and reproduce that design from colored plastic blocks. Spatial visualization and analysis, simultaneous processing, visual-motor coordination, dexterity, and nonverbal concept formation are involved. The students use logic and reasoning to successfully complete the items.

Similarities measures logical thinking, verbal concept formation and verbal abstract reasoning. Two similar but different objects or concepts are presented, and the student is asked to tell how they are alike or different.

Digit Span measures short-term auditory memory and attention. The digits have no logical relationship to each other and are presented in random order by the examiner. The student must then recite the digits correctly by recalling them in the same order. On the second part of this subtest the student must remember the order in which digits are presented, but recite them in reverse order.

Picture Concepts measures categorical, abstract reasoning, and the items here increase in difficulty. Students are asked to look at two (or three) rows of pictured objects and indicate (by pointing) the single picture from each row that shares a characteristic in common with the single picture(s) from the other row(s).

Coding measures visual-motor dexterity, associative nonverbal learning, and nonverbal short-term memory. Fine-motor dexterity, speed, accuracy and ability to manipulate a pencil contribute to task success; perceptual organization is also important.

Vocabulary measures the students’ verbal fluency and concept formation, word knowledge, and word usage. Here’s one subtest in which prior knowledge does play a role.

Letter-Number Sequencing measures attention span, short-term auditory recall, processing speed and sequencing abilities. The task involves listening to and remembering a string of digits and letters read aloud at a speed of one per second, then recalling the information by repeating the numbers in chronological order, followed by the letters in alphabetical order.

Matrix Reasoning measures visual processing and abstract, spatial perception and may be influenced by concentration, attention, and persistence.

Comprehension is not just ordinary reading comprehension; this subtest measures the students’ common-sense social knowledge, practical judgment in social situations, and level of social maturation, along with the extent of development of their moral conscience.

Symbol Search requires the student to determine whether a target symbol appears among the symbols shown in a search group. Memory is not a primary requirement for success on this task; perception and recognition are the two prime requirements, in addition to speed, accuracy, attention, and concentration. The symbols are geometric forms, rather than familiar letters or numbers.

Picture Completion measures a student's ability to recognize familiar items and to identify missing parts. The student's task is to separate essential and nonessential parts from the whole. It is necessary to observe each item closely and concentrate on picture detail. Students must name or indicate the missing part by saying the name of the part or by pointing to it.

Cancellation measures visual vigilance/neglect, selective attention, and speed in processing visual information in accordance with previous attempts along the same line.

Information measures general cultural knowledge, long-term memory, and acquired facts. Here’s another subtest that challenges students to remember what has been taught previously in school.

Arithmetic measures numerical accuracy, reasoning and mental arithmetic ability. Mental arithmetic and story problems play an important part in the student’s success.

Word Reasoning measures verbal abstract reasoning requiring analogical and categorical thinking, as well as verbal concept formation and expression.

Perceptual Reasoning Index measures perceptual and organizational skills, reflecting ability to interpret reason with, and/or organize visually perceived material.

Test Prep Bundles and Suggested Test Prep Plan for WISC®

As you can see, the subtests of the WISC®-IV cover a large amount of verbal and non-verbal skill areas. For grades K-1, we recommend working with the bundles over at least one month, but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice.

If you are really pressed for time, and you see the student has mastery in a section, you may skip ahead. You may also bookmark and return to activities that are more challenging.

One way to measure the mastery is to use the first few items in each activity as a pre-test. If you see that your child answers quickly and correctly, you may want to consider moving on. If they struggle, go through the activities as best you can, but bookmark them and consider going back over them.

Using the pre-test technique will give you a good idea of where the child’s strengths and weaknesses are across the skills and abilities covered in the material.

Test Prep Guide for the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test® (NNAT®)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The NNAT® and NNAT®-2 are utilized as part of the entrance process for students who have been identified as potentially gifted and talented. The emphasis here is on the second "N" for nonverbal. The test uses matrices to measure the problem-solving and nonverbal reasoning skills of students in kindergarten though high school. The NNAT® and NNAT®-2, or Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test® is published by NCS Pearson, Inc. (previously Harcourt Assessment, Inc./The Psychological Corporation, the original publisher of the test).

Reasoning is synonymous with learning and problem solving. NNAT® measures reasoning using four different item types:

Pattern Completion requires children to identify the option that completes the pattern.

Reasoning by Analogy requires the identification of relationships between shapes. E.g., a relationship between a large circle and a small circle, relationships may be presented in more than two dimensions.

Serial Reasoning requires children to identify the shape that comes next in a pattern.

Spatial Visualization involves visualizing how objects might look when rotated or otherwise transformed or combined.

Test Prep Bundle and Suggested Test Prep Plan for NNAT®

For grades K-1, we recommend working with the materials included in the bundles over at least one month, but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice.

Test Prep Guide for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills® (ITBS®)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills® (ITBS®) is not just a test for the students from the state of Iowa. ITBS® is a nationally standardized achievement test for K-12 students. What that means is that you can compare your child’s scores to children across the country in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. The ITBS® (Iowa Test of Basic Skills®) is published by Riverside Publishing, a Houghton Mifflin Company.

The test is used by some states and a large number of private schools to measure grade- level performance and is often paired with an IQ instrument such as WISC®-IV or the CogAT® for entrance into gifted and talented programs.

The test is also being used by a growing number of homeschool families since the test is sufficient for state homeschool requirements. The Iowa can also confirm both a child’s learning progress and the teaching ability of the growing number of parents who choose to homeschool their children.

ITBS® scores are even accepted for eligibility into the National Honor Society. Students can practice for a test like the Iowa and when they do, the material they work with should reflect the format of the ITBS.

It is important that students have exposure to, and experience with, questions in the formats they will encounter on ITBS® and other assessments. Of course, endless drill and practice, especially when practice items are not connected to day-to-day work, can be counterproductive. Our products provide high-quality material, without being an actual practice test or pushing toward a drill-and-practice approach. See the table below.

Subject Area How It Is Assessed
Vocabulary Each multiple-choice question presents a word in a short phrase or sentence, and students select the answer that most nearly means the same as that word.
Reading Comprehension Passages are fiction, fables, tales, poetry, interviews, diaries, biographical sketches, science and social studies materials. Approximately two-thirds of the questions require students to draw inferences or to generalize about what they have read.
Language Arts K-1 students’ abilities to understand linguistic relationships -- how language is used to express ideas are measured. Questions are presented orally by the teacher, and students choose from a set of pictorial responses.
For grade 2, a major portion of the test deals with skills in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and skills in usage and expression in writing. For these tasks, the questions and response choices are read by the teacher as students read silently. A separate score is provided for spelling.
For older students, separate scores are given for Capitalization, Punctuation, and Usage, and Expression.
Mathematics For grades K-2: Beginning math concepts, problem solving, and math operations. Areas covered include numeration, number systems, geometry, measurement, and the use of addition and subtraction in word problems. Questions are presented orally, and response options are pictures or numerals.
Older students have separate categories for Math Concepts and Estimation, Computation, and Problem Solving /Data Interpretation.
Science Here there is emphasis on the methods and processes used in scientific work. In addition, many questions measure knowledge and skills in the areas of life science, earth and space sciences, and physical sciences. Students are required to use the concepts and principles of science to explain, infer, hypothesize, measure, and classify.

Test Prep Bundle and Suggested Test Prep Plan for ITBS®

We recommend working with the materials in the bundles over at least one month. Even though the bundles offer a lot of material, if you make working with the books part of the daily routine, you’ll be surprised how fast things will move.

It is also important to point out that all the titles have value well beyond the testing window. Each title will help enhance your child’s ability to reason and analyze, skills that are essential for success in many arenas.

In all of the Detective® books, Can You Find Me?, and Editor In Chief® Beginning, you will find well-structured multiple-choice items like you find in ITBS®. That is the correct response is clearly correct, and the distractors are plausible. For example, a distractor in a reading test should be text-based; a math distractor would be a common mathematical error, related to the problem. There should not be any outliers in the answer choices, e.g., an answer choice that is not text-based, a choice that is much longer or much shorter than the others, etc.

Test Prep Guide for the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence™ (WPPSI™)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence™, or WPPSI™ is often used as part of the entrance process for students identified as potentially gifted and talented. The current version of the recently restructured intelligence test, WPPSI™–IV, features shorter, more game-like activities and simplified scoring procedures. The WPPSI™ or Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence™ is published by NCS Pearson, Inc. (previously Harcourt Assessment, Inc./The Psychological Corporation, the original publisher of the test).

Similar to the WISC® assessment and other intelligence indexes, the WPPSI™-IV assessment assesses skills and abilities, rather than grade-level knowledge. The test’s propensity toward skills and abilities make for a test-taking experience that is unlike the statewide exams and nationally normed tests (ITBS®, Stanford 10, etc.). Thus, preparing for the types of items encountered on the Wechsler Primary is essential, however, the WPPSI™ is not a test with a defined curriculum for which a child can easily study. You can prepare your children for testing, and beyond the test date, by exposing them to a wide range of thinking activities infused across the curriculum. The idea is to teach children how to think and problem solve, and reflect on their own thinking processes, to improve decision-making skills. Research and countless success stories demonstrate increased scores on IQ tests, such as the WPPSI™ assessment.

The WPPSI™-IV score summary is divided into five main areas:

  1. Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) – most reliable and representative of general intellectual functioning. (Information, Vocabulary, Word Reasoning)
  2. Verbal IQ (VIQ) – acquired knowledge, verbal reasoning and comprehension, and attention to verbal stimuli
  3. Performance IQ (PIQ) – fluid reasoning, spatial processing, attentiveness to detail, and visual-motor integration (Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, Picture Concepts)
  4. Processing Speed (PSQ) – ability to quickly and correctly scan, sequence, and discriminate simple visual information
  5. Global Language (GLC) – expressive and receptive language abilities

Existing subtests have been modified and new subtests have been added to include more engaging, age-appropriate activities. The scale is now broken out into two age bands, 2 and a half years old to 3 years, 11 months; and 4 years old to 7 years, 3 months.

There are 5 subtests on the WPPSI™-IV (age band 2:6-3:11 years). There are 14 subtests on the WPPSI™-IV (age band 4:0-7:3 years). Here’s a look at what the subtests assess.

Five Subtests in the first band (Ages 2:6 to 3:11) Assess

Receptive Vocabulary measures an individual’s ability to identify correct responses to spoken words, for instance, at a picture that represents the word spoken by the examiner. Here’s one subtest in which prior word knowledge does play a role.

Information measures general cultural knowledge, long-term memory, and acquired facts. Here’s another subtest that challenges students to remember what has been taught previously in school.

Object Assembly measures an individual’s ability to analyze and bring meaning to pieces of a basic puzzle. Students must arrange the pieces together to form a meaningful whole image within a specified period of time. Spatial visualization and analysis, simultaneous processing, visual-motor coordination and nonverbal concept formation are involved. The students use inductive and deductive reasoning to successfully complete the assembly.

Picture Naming assesses an individual's ability to name pictorial stimuli. The student's task is to separate essential and nonessential parts from the whole. It is necessary to observe each item closely and concentrate on picture detail. Students must name or indicate the missing part by saying the name of the part or by pointing to it.

14 Subtests in the second band (Ages 4:0 to 7:3) Assess

Block Design measures an individual’s ability to analyze and synthesize an abstract design and reproduce that design from colored plastic blocks. Spatial visualization and analysis, simultaneous processing, visual-motor coordination, dexterity, and nonverbal concept formation are involved. The students use logic and reasoning to successfully complete the items.

Similarities measures logical thinking, verbal concept formation and verbal abstract reasoning. Two similar but different objects or concepts are presented, and the student is asked to tell how they are alike or different.

Fine motor dexterity, speed, accuracy and ability to manipulate a pencil contribute to task success; perceptual organization is also important.

Vocabulary measures the students’ verbal fluency and concept formation, word knowledge, and word usage. Here’s one subtest in which prior knowledge does play a role.

Information measures general cultural knowledge, long-term memory, and acquired facts. Here’s another subtest that challenges students to remember what has been taught previously in school.

Word Reasoning measures verbal abstract reasoning requiring analogical and categorical thinking, as well as verbal concept formation and expression.

Receptive Vocabulary measures an individual’s ability to identify correct responses to spoken words, for instance, at a picture that represents the word spoken by the examiner. Here’s one subtest in which prior word knowledge does play a role.

Picture Naming assessing an individual's ability to name pictorial stimuli. The student's task is to separate essential and nonessential parts from the whole. It is necessary to observe each item closely and concentrate on picture detail. Students must name or indicate the missing part by saying the name of the part or by pointing to it.

The Primary Index scales include:

  1. Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI)
  2. Visual Spatial Index (VSI)
  3. Working Memory Index (WMI)
  4. Fluid Reasoning Index (FRI)
  5. Processing Speed Index (PSI)

The Ancillary Index scales include:

  1. Vocabulary Acquisition Index (VAI)
  2. Nonverbal Index (NVI)
  3. General Ability Index (CAI)
  4. Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI)

Test Prep Bundles and Suggested Test Prep Plan for WPPSI™

The subtests of the WPPSI™-IV cover a large amount of verbal and non-verbal skill areas. For preschool children especially, we recommend working with the bundles over at least one month (six months is ideal), but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice. We've laid out a fairly ambitious preparation plan below for your convenience.

If you are really pressed for time, and you see the student has mastery in a section, you may skip ahead. You may also bookmark and return to activities that are more challenging.

One way to measure the mastery is to use the first few items in each activity as a pre-test. If you see that your children answer quickly and correctly, you may want to consider moving on. If they struggle, go through the activities as best you can, but bookmark them and consider going back later for further review.

Using the pre-test technique will give you a good idea of where the child’s strengths and weaknesses are across the skills and abilities covered in the material.

Test Prep Guide for the Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The Cognitive Abilities Test™ or CogAT® is commonly utilized as part of the entrance process for students who have been identified as potentially gifted and talented. The CogAT® (Cognitive Abilities Test™) is published by Riverside Publishing, a Houghton Mifflin Company.

The test measures students’ reasoning abilities in the three areas that are linked to academic success: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. CogAT® is often paired with the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills® (ITBS®) to show a more complete picture of a student’s abilities.

Reasoning is synonymous with learning and problem-solving. CogAT’s measurement of the three reasoning areas helps provide a balanced view of the child’s potential for academic success.

The latest edition of the CogAT® is Form 7 (7th edition). Form 6 is still in use, but most schools have transitioned to Form 7. The main differences between Form 6 and Form 7 are the primary level questions (Kindergarten through 2nd grade), which are now picture based as opposed to word based. Also, figural analysis questions are now included at the Kindergarten level. The bundles presented below will help prepare students for both versions of the test (and include Figure Analysis practice for Kindergarten students).

Here’s a look at each section of the test and some sample item types:

Verbal Reasoning

The verbal section of CogAT® will measure Oral Vocabulary, Verbal Reasoning, Sentence Completion (grade 3 and up), and Verbal Analogies (grade 3 and up).

  • Verbal Classification: The student is given a list of three words that are alike in some way. The student is asked to choose a word (from a selection of five words) that is alike in the same way.Example: The words displayed are GREEN BLUE RED and the answer choices are color, crayon, paint, yellow, rainbow
  • Sentence Completion: The student is given a sentence with a word left out and is asked to choose a word that makes the best sense in the sentence.Example: Apples _______ on trees. The answer choices are fall, grow, show, bloom, spread
  • Verbal Analogies: The student is given three words. The first two words go together. The third word goes with one of the answer choices. The student is asked to choose the word that goes with the third word the same way that the second word goes with the first.Example: new (is to) old : wet (is to) ________ and the choices are rain, drip, hot, sun, dry

Non-Verbal Reasoning

In this section, Figure Classification, Matrices (K-2), Figural Analysis, and Figural Classification are assessed. This part of the test often presents the most novel problems to students. The items on these tests use only geometric shapes and figures that have had little direct relationship to formal school instruction. The tests require no reading and no prior knowledge.

  • Figure Classification: The students are given three figures that are alike in some way. They are given three answer choices and five pictures to choose from. They are asked to decide which figure goes best with the three answer choices.Example: the student is given three items that are oddly shaped but each one has 4 sides and is black. The choices are a black circle, a black triangle, a 4-sided white object, a black 4-sided object, and a six-sided white object.
  • Figure Analogies: The student is given three figures. The first two figures go together; the third figure goes with one of the answer choices.Example: The first two figures are a large square that goes together with a small square. The second pair is to go together the same way that the first two figures go together. For the second pair students are given a large circle. The answer choices are a small triangle, a large circle, a small square, a small circle, and a large rectangle
  • Figure Analysis:The student is shown how a square piece of dark paper is folded and where holes are punched in it. The student is to figure out how the paper will look when it is unfolded.Example: If a dark piece of paper is folded in the center from top to bottom and a hole is punched in the bottom right-hand corner, what will the piece of paper look like when it is unfolded? The answer choices are:

    A) one hole in the bottom right-hand corner
    B) one hole in the bottom right-hand corner and one in the top right-hand corner
    C) one hole in the top right-hand corner
    D) one hole in the bottom right-hand corner and one in the bottom left-hand corner
    E) one hole in the bottom right- hand corner and one in the top left-hand corner.

Quantitative Reasoning

This section isn’t just about math facts, it’s more about thinking numerically and problem-solving with numbers. Relational Concepts, Quantitative Concepts, Quantitative Relations (grade 3 and up), Number Series (grade 3 and up), and Equation Building (grade 3 and up) areas are assessed.

  • Quantitative Relations: The student is given two problems numbered one and two with three answer choices. The student is to solve the two problems and determine if the answer is greater, less than, or equal to.Example: 1. 0 + 3 2. 3 + 0The answer choices are:
    • 1 is greater than 2
    • 1 is less than 2
    • 1 is equal to 2
  • Number Series: The student is given a series of numbers and asked to decide which number should come next in the series.Example: 5 10 15 20 The answer choices are 25, 30, 35, 40, 45
  • Equation Building: The student is given numbers and signs. The student is asked to combine the numbers and signs to get a solution that is an answer choice.Example: 1 2 3 -x The answer choices are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6

Test Prep Bundle and Suggested Test Prep Plan for CogAT®

We recommend working with the bundles over at least a six-week period, but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice. If you are really pressed for time, and you see the student has mastery in a section, you may skip ahead. You may also want to bookmark and return to activities that are more challenging.

Test Prep Guide for the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test® (OLSAT®)

by cr1t1calbend @ The Critical Thinking Co.™

The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®, or OLSAT® is commonly utilized as part of the entrance process for students identified as potentially gifted and talented. The OLSAT® (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®) is published by NCS Pearson, Inc. (previously Harcourt Assessment, Inc./The Psychological Corporation, the original publisher of the test).

The test, administered to students in kindergarten though high school, measures abstract thinking and reasoning abilities. It is a group-administered, multiple-choice exam.

Reasoning is synonymous with learning and problem-solving. The OLSAT® assessment's measurement of the five reasoning areas helps provide a balanced view of the child’s potential for academic success.

Here’s a look at each section of the test and some sample item types:

  • Verbal Comprehension measures skills such as following directions (up to grade 3), antonyms, sentence completion, and sentence arrangement (grade 3 and above).
  • Verbal Reasoning measures arithmetic reasoning (K-2), verbal analogies, verbal classifications grade 3 and up), and inference (grade 4 and up).
  • Pictorial Reasoning (grades K-2) measures pictorial classifications, pictorial analogies, and picture sequences.
  • Figural Reasoning measures figural classifications (up to grade 3), figural analogies, and figural sequences.
  • Quantitative Reasoning (grade 3 and up) measures number series, numeric inferences, and number matrices.

Test Prep Bundles and Suggested Test Prep Plan for OLSAT® Assessment

For grades K-1, we recommend working with the materials in the bundles over at least one month, but we also recognize parents often receive a testing date with less than 30-days’ notice.
