25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN VIETNAM - The Hungry Suitcase

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN VIETNAM - The Hungry Suitcase

The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand enjoys a 50% return rate for foreign tourists. In contrast, Vietnam only pulls back 5% of visitors.Personally, I feel that Vietnam walks all over Thailand in almost every travel category except beaches. So, why do so many people have such bad experiences and never return to Vietnam?I hope the list I have made below helps out first-time visitors. It may seem cynical and anti-Vietnamese. It’s not. I love this country; I want you to love it, too. I’d just like to alert travelers to beware of the common first-time mistakes that may sour their experience of the local people and the country overall.Do your homework, know what to expect, and this is the most rewarding country in Southeast Asia to explore. Here goes:-1-TAKE YOUR VISA SERIOUSLY, VERY SERIOUSLY INDEEDYes, it seems like common sense, but I have seen tourists turned ... ‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

“a place around the bend where he could jump off”

Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?

A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

A Very Merry Christmas In Arizona & Tennessee

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Before we spent Christmas in Arizona last year, my list of countries visited was almost triple that of US States I’d seen. Believe me, I’m not telling you this in an attempt to humble brag about how many countries I’ve been to, because in the grand scheme of things I actually haven’t been to all that many. I’m telling you this so you know just how little I’ve seen of my own country. It’s something that bothers me more and more every year as I continue to see the rest of the world while my home country stays mostly undiscovered. But that’s an entirely different topic for an entirely different day, because today (and the whole month, really) is about Christmas. Last year’s Christmas to be exact. During our years in London, we were only able to make one trip back to the US every year and usually chose to take it over the summer when Lexie’s school break was longer. But as it happened with our move mid-way through the year to Singapore, we were lucky enough to get two trips back in 2016, one in the summer and one for the holidays. It had been three years since […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

4 Amazing Beaches To Visit In Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

When I was growing up, only two things mattered to me when we traveled – could I shop there and how close was the beach? (You’re impressed with my teenage self’s deep and varied interests, I can tell.) I’m pleased to tell you my passions in life have expanded a great deal since those early years of travel, and I can’t even remember the last time I went shopping, but I’m not going to lie, I still love a good beach. And so, at least once a year, we go in search of the very best ones. Living here in Southeast Asia, we are spoiled with hundreds (possibly even thousands) of beautiful beaches right at our fingertips. It makes choosing between them all a near-impossible task. (I know, what a predicament.) When, after much research and deliberation, we finally settled on Railay Beach for our Chinese New Year holiday last year, I was fairly certain we were picking one of the very best beach destinations in Thailand…and I wasn’t wrong. Railay blew us away with its beauty and completely chill vibe! Check out our full guide to Railay, Thailand here! While there is more to Railay than just its beaches, […]

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?

Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »

Tips For Driving The Apache Trail In Arizona

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Planes, trains, boats, buses. We’ve traveled to a lot of places in a lot of different ways, but my favorite is still the old fashioned road trip. There’s so much freedom in hopping in your own vehicle and being able to stop whenever and wherever you please. Plus, of the top five ways to get from A to B, it’s the best choice if you happen to be traveling through scenic areas. We’ve been fortunate enough to take some pretty scenic drives over the past few years. (The Scottish Highlands and Western Cornwall are two that come to mind!) And while we were in Arizona visiting family for Christmas last year, we got the opportunity to take another – the historic Apache Trail drive. THE APACHE TRAIL WHAT IS IT? Historically, the Apache Trail was used as a migration route by the Apaches (hence the name) to travel from their winter homes in the desert lowlands to their summer homes in the mountains. Later, after Anglo-American soldiers and gold-seekers arrived, it became a popular stagecoach route. Today, it is one of Arizona’s most dramatic scenic drives weaving through rugged mountains and alongside sparkling desert lakes and terrifying cliff drop-offs. HOW […]

Four Perfect Days on a Singapore Vacation

by Christian Baines @ Goway

As Southeast Asia’s great cultural crossroads, Singapore is a patchwork of contradictions. The smoke of incense rises from traditional temples in the shadow of towering architectural marvels. Lively “wet” markets keep the ever-hungry locals (and visitors) fed the old fashioned way, while space age artificial trees collect water for the island’s most ambitious botanical innovation. […]

10 THINGS I CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Recently I’ve taken a four-month break off of travel to settle into a comfortable life in a quiet town. It’s been nice, mostly.

I do miss packing and unpacking the bags. I miss tossing away ripped up socks, giving away paperback books, and moving what’s left of my big shampoo into a small little shampoo thingy.

Some things are essential to have packed and ready to grab when I’m on the road. I will not include the obvious things like a camera, computer, passport, etc. These following are the little home run hitters that are easy to forget about, but always needed:

1. DENTAL FLOSS

I like to eat. I like to eat meat. I like eating late. My teeth are spaced fairly far apart from laughing too much. Stuff gets in there and I need to get it out. I’ve often been wandering ... Read More »

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

The Ultimate Travel Guide To Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

It’s been quite some time since I’ve written about any of our Asia explorations. To remedy this oversight, we are going to kick off a new year of travel tales with a guide to one of my favorite destinations in Southeast Asia – Railay Beach in Krabi, Thailand! We arrived in Railay about this time last year for a short break over the Chinese New Year holiday. I’ll get to why you shouldn’t book over CNY in a minute, but first I want to tell you about this place – this magically wonderful place that has the power to transform even the most uptight of us (I’m talking about me here) into completely relaxed, pad-thai-eating beach bums without a care in the world in under 24 hours. Guaranteed.* *Not really, but you get what I mean. RAILAY, THAILAND Located along the southern coast of Thailand, Railay is actually a peninsula, but feels more like an island thanks to the dense jungle that cuts it off from the rest of Krabi. A mix of dramatic limestone cliffs, postcard-worthy beaches, and thick jungle, Railay truly has it all, scenery and activity-wise. But what really makes this spot unique (and what makes it […]

Railay Phutawan Resort: A Tropical Getaway In Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Is there anything more time-consuming during travel planning than searching for the perfect accommodations? Don’t get me wrong, I truly love this part of planning a vacation, but it does take a lot of time to sort through each and every property in our budget before finally making a decision. It might seem a little silly to spend hours searching for something we’re hardly going to do more than sleep in, but for me, a good night’s sleep and waking up in a place that puts me in a good mood every morning is well worth the time and effort put in to find it. That being said, sometimes it is a relief to have limited places to choose from which was the case in Railay, Thailand. Railay is a small peninsula in the Krabi province of Thailand sporting mostly wild jungle (which separates it from the mainland), but also several world-class beaches. Because of its small size, Railay only has a couple dozen different resorts and hotels which made my job of finding the right one a whole lot easier! With a maximum budget of $100/night and our preference towards a villa or cottage, we were able to settle […]

Happy New Year From Singapore!

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Happy New Year from Singapore! I thought I was going to have something a little more interesting to share with you today, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans… Make them, and a giant monsoon will come through and wreck them all. Okay, maybe that’s not what they say. But that’s what happened. Our plan had been to go down to the Marina Bay area and watch Singapore’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show from across the water. I’d been looking forward to it for months and even knew exactly where I wanted to sit for the best view with the least amount of people. (Gardens by the Bay East, in case you’re curious.) It was going to be just like that time we watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London, but without the triple layers of clothing and threat of frostbite. And then the monsoon came through. It arrived with gusto during the night on New Year’s Eve Eve. Waking all of us up with its thunderous arrival, I actually smiled to myself, thinking Oh good, we’ll just get all this pesky rain business out of the way now! But when raindrops were still pelting against […]

If a city strikes your fancy, rent an apartment for a month and stick around for awhile.

Another advantage of worldwide Internet networking is that it allows us to exchange short-term apartments without going through an agent or company. Check the New York City craigslist sublet page and you’ll find plenty of Parisians happy to exchange their Left Bank apartment for a little temporary stepping stone on the Upper West Side.
