Sound system innovators: The women shaking up the UK scene

by Emma Snaith @ Eastlondonlines

Since the first Caribbean communities settled in Lewisham and Hackney in the 50s, they have cultivated a rich sound system culture which was crucial in the genesis of the UK-wide movement. Nowadays, there are fewer sound system events across the boroughs but the scene is still going strong – and increasingly those doing the most innovative work are women. A photography exhibition currently on display at Goldsmiths University celebrates the new generation of sound system operators across the UK, including pioneering soundwomen. While honouring important traditions such as using vinyl, playing dub, roots and culture reggae and promoting a message

In what has been condemned by police as a “vile’’ incident, an elderly woman died in an arson attack in Deptford High Street in the early hours of Wednesday. Giuseppina Fazzani, 82, who lived in a flat near a Vietnamese restaurant died in a fire that broke out at 1:40 a.m. Police said they were treating the incident as murder and that “an accelerant’’ was used to start the fire. The nature of the attack and the actual targets are unclear as there were two neighbouring establishments that were damaged in the process. Deputy Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons of the

The competition is open to any high street business that has opened in Brockley / Crofton Park, Ladywell or Telegraph Hill in 2017.

Four Lewisham schools on England's 'under-performing' list

by noreply@blogger.com (Nick Barron) @ Brockley Central

The Department of Education has published a list of London's under-performing schools. Four Lewisham schools feature on the list, making our borough's total second only to Lambeth's. The Mirror reports:

England's worst school have been revealed as official figures show 365 education centres have failed to meet the government's minimum standards. One in eight of England's mainstream secondaries were under-performing in 2017, according to new statistics. This is up from 282 schools , just under one in 10 - the year before.

According to analysis of the data, it means 260,783 schoolchildren are now being taught at under-performing secondaries - about one in 12 (8.6%), compared to 206,991 (6.8%) in 2016.  Schools fall below the government's performance threshold if pupils fail to make enough progress across eight subjects, with particular weight given to English and maths.

The Department for Education said the rise in under-performing schools is because of technical changes to the points system used by government statisticians to calculate a school's performance.

The rise comes amid major changes to England's exams system, including the introduction of a new grading system, which has meant the data includes English and maths GCSE results awarded new 9-1 grades while other subjects received traditional A*-G grades.

School leaders said the new grading system affecting English and maths has complicated the way school performance is calculated, as it has to be worked out using a combination of old and new grading systems.

Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said: "As the DfE itself says in today's statistics, these changes are the main reason why there has been an increase in the number of schools which are deemed to be below the 'floor standard' for Progress 8.

Lewisham's entries include two schools serving the Brockley area:

  • Sedgehill School
  • Forest Hill School
  • Prendergast Ladywell School
  • Addey and Stanhope School
With thanks to Daniel for the tip-off.

Bite Mi - Best Newcomer 2017

by noreply@blogger.com (Nick Barron) @ Brockley Central

Congratulations to Vietnamese cafe Bite Mi, winner of Brockley Central's Best Newcomer Award for the best new local high street business of 2017.

In the first re-ballot in the award's history, the top three were:

Bite Mi - 34%
Saka Maka - 27%
Parlez - 18%

Bite Mi is a fast, friendly cafe with a simple and authentic menu that has consistently drawn the crowds since it opened in February. With the recent departure of Coulgate Street's Mo Pho, it filled a hole in Brockley's culinary landscape and its stomachs.

This is the third time in four years that a Brockley Cross business has collected the Award, a remarkable turnaround for an undeniably ugly patch of SE4, which was once best known for gang violence and bad parking.

It's also worth noting that this is yet another independent winner, drawn from an all-independent field. The closest we came in 2017 to seeing a chain open in Brockley was the arrival of Gently, the sister store of previous winner Gently Elephant.

When Tesco opened on Lewisham Way a decade ago, many predicted it would herald the end of independent Brockley. Instead, the last ten years have been a golden age for local startups. While the supermarkets have moved in with a vengeance, they are surrounded by high-quality, adventurous and successful local businesses.

With the exception of Ladywell's El's Kitchen, which changed ownership but continues to flourish as The Larder, all of the previous eight winners continue to thrive to this day, while The Orchard, Brockley Market, Gently Elephant, The Brockley Deli and Masala Wala have all gone on to open more businesses in Brockley and beyond. That is an extraordinary record, of which they and we can be proud.

The Brockley Central Hall of Fame now looks like this:

Best Newcomer 2017 - Bite Mi
Best Newcomer 2016 - Cat Food
Best Newcomer 2015 - Masala Wala Cafe
Best Newcomer 2014 - The Brockley Deli
Best Newcomer 2013 - The Malaysian Deli
Best Newcomer 2012 - Gently Elephant
Best Newcomer 2011 - Brockley Market
Best Newcomer 2010 - El's Kitchen
Best Newcomer 2009 - The Orchard

It’ll be even more controversial than the time I disparaged chicken, dismissing it as a soulless meat fit only for children and invalids. I don’t like … Continue reading

Lewisham legends legitimate?

by noreply@blogger.com (Nick Barron) @ Brockley Central

Subterranean shopping centres in Lewisham and Ladywell Village skyscrapers? Judy's heard some rumours and wants to know if anyone else can corroborate. I can't - can you? Please, help a sister out in the comments below:

"I’ve heard from two reasonably sensible people about two bits of info which seem to have no evidence anywhere else to back them up.

"The first is that that Lewisham shopping centre is due to be demolished and an underground shopping centre built under the road/former roundabout with a – gasp! – Waitrose. Just the market retained but a spirited local campaign already going to ‘save’ the (?) empty Citibank tower.

"Secondly that in Ladywell a block of flats is due to be built in the space occupied by the carwash with a mini supermarket underneath, presumably of a Tesco/Sainsbury kind. Have you heard anything? Lewisham gov website hints at possibilities for further developments but nothing concrete."

Lewisham Councillors call on Labour to change Pro-Brexit stance

by noreply@blogger.com (Nick Barron) @ Brockley Central

Seventy Labour councillors from Lewisham, Lambeth and Southwark, unhappy at Labour's pro-Brexit policies, have written a joint letter to the party's leadership, asking them to change course.

Labour has struggled to spell out its specific position on Brexit and this letter is similarly vague, falling just short of calling for Labour to stop the Brexit process or push for a second referendum. Nor does it say anything about the single market or customs union. All they know is that they are not happy with the direction of travel.

Politics.co.uk quotes signatory James Coldwell of Southwark council as saying:

"Leavers and Remainers alike now see that the reality of Brexit bears almost no resemblance to what voters were sold last year. In changed circumstances, Labour must have the courage to offer voters the chance to say whether they wish to go ahead with Britain’s exit from the EU. Staying silent up to now has damaged the Tories enormously. But if Labour continues to treat Brexit as an exercise in political point-scoring, future generations won’t forgive us."

Magpie review – Modernist food served ‘Dim Sum’-style in Mayfair

Magpie review – Modernist food served ‘Dim Sum’-style in Mayfair

by pickyglutton @ The Picky Glutton

The Pidgin sequel takes flight but doesn’t quite soar I once wrote that it’s rare for a restaurant to relocate inwards from the suburbs to the centre of town, rather than other way around. Recent events are proving me wrong, showing that such a move (or sprouting a second branch closer to the centre of … Continue reading

Temper City review – meat temple sequel takes on curry and poultry

by pickyglutton @ The Picky Glutton

It’s both different from the original Soho Temper and reassuringly similar too I try not to write too much about the industry goings-on in London’s restaurant scene. Such gossipy navel-gazing is often transient in its importance, at best, and really doesn’t serve the purpose of this site which is to help you find somewhere really good … Continue reading

The man behind North London’s best takeaway Joe and ‘Za

by Anisha De @ Eastlondonlines

On a gloomy Saturday afternoon, the modest Joe and ‘Za pizzeria blends seamlessly into the Hoxton neighbourhood. If you weren’t paying attention, you could walk past the four-seater restaurant without realising they were last year’s Best Takeaway in North London at the British Takeaway Awards. They’re yet to put up a poster. Once inside, you’ll see the owner Iftekar Hossain hunched over the telephone, making notes. A lone chef is scurrying all over the kitchen, tossing pizzas in the air, while a delivery man impatiently waits for his order. Their winner’s trophy is tucked away in a corner. It’s a typically
