Mai's Vietnamese Restaurant

Dallas Observer

People rush to Mai's for its traditional Vietnamese fare, like the warming bowls of noodle soups – among them, traditional beef meatball soup with cilantro, bean sprouts, lime, and jalapeño on the side. The various skin-burning clay pots, such as the combo curry pot (rice topped with shrimp, chicken and mixed vegetables in a coconut curry sauce) are also specialties. The dinner specials are...

Tenderloin’s Vietnamese restaurant core faces extinction

Tenderloin’s Vietnamese restaurant core faces extinction

San Francisco Chronicle

At 9 a.m., Muoi Au is browning pork for her bun bo hue, a noodle soup that brings devoted regulars to her restaurant in the Tenderloin neighborhood, Ha Nam Ninh, on Fridays. With her round face suavely rouged and her black-and-white blouse glinting when the light hits a silver thread, Au looks more saleswoman than chef. The location her family business occupies, in the core of San Francisco’s Little Saigon area, has turned into a money pit, and her landlord is eager to find someone else to gentrify the space. Restaurants like Ha Nam Ninh have long been the backbone — social, culinary, economic — of the Tenderloin’s sizable Vietnamese community. The Tenderloin Economic Development Project, which helps attract and retain neighborhood businesses, has documented a significant number of closures in the past two years, including Cafe Duong Dong, Hong Market, Pagolac and Pho Saigon. [...] commercial property owners who were begging our neighborhood residents to open restaurants and wanting the Vietnamese people to live in these spaces won’t rent to us. In recent years, Yelp brought hundreds of new customers to the family’s business, drawn by the stars bestowed on its off-menu No. 25 noodle soup, “dry style.” When she offered to sell the business and equipment to an acquaintance willing to pay much more in rent, the landlord demanded a cut of the asset sale. Ha Nam Ninh moved in, pasted signs on the awning — scratching out Sao Bien from the blue tarp so only phantom letters remained — and opened in September 2014. [...] Au’s husband died. [...] as the family was rocked by grief, they began noticing water trickling down the walls from the Marathon, a grotty, grim single-room-occupancy hotel that occupied the upper three stories of the building. In November, during the height of the lunch rush, a chunk of the ceiling collapsed into the dining room, spewing water, tiles and dust. Ellis Larkin and its real estate broker did not respond to phone calls requesting comment. Juan Carlos Cancino of the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development said, “Neighborhood stakeholders have raised concerns that vacancies may no longer be the primary difficulty on Larkin — that it’s now about holding onto and getting the right business mix to support the neighborhood.” Jay Foster, chef-owner of the 10-year-old Farmerbrown restaurant at the foot of Mason Street, recently had to hire lawyers to keep his rent from quadrupling. The final rent on the proposed new lease, $2.85 per square foot, may be more in line with current retail rents. [...] the Yelpers are complaining about paying almost $10 for their favorite noodles, and it’s not like many of the neighborhood residents who make up the regular clientele are seeing their wages increase 65 percent.
