'Lynching in America': An Excellent, and Horrifying, Educational Resource

by @ Tucson Weekly

For K-12 and college-level teachers who want to educate themselves and their students on the subject of lynching, which, it hardly needs saying, is one of the most vile and horrifying parts of this country's post-Civil War history, the site Lynching in America, created by the Equal Justice Initiative, is as thorough a portrayal as you are likely to find. Miami New Times

Long one of the bright lights in Miami's quality-challenged Asian culinary scene, this cramped, no-frills eatery still turns out creditable Vietnamese cuisine. Cha gio are excellent, and blue crabs in a tart-sweet tamarind sauce are worth the amount of effort it takes to extract the minuscule nuggets of crab meat. Be advised: Little Saigon takes cash only.Read our full review.

Quite simply, monosodium glutamate, or MSG, makes things taste good, yet it continues to be feared and demonized. Vietnamese food authority Andrea Nguyen has written about the history of its use in pho and has sought to debunk some of the myths surrounding it.

Copper Cow Coffee: Vietnamese Pour-Over Goes Global

by David Kaye @ Vietcetera

Like her Copper Cow Coffee, Debbie Wei Mullan is a mix of Asian and American. She was raised in San Francisco by her Chinese-Vietnamese mother and American father, and although they assimilated into American culture, growing up, her mom’s kitchen was filled with the pungent aromas and intense flavors of Vietnamese and Chinese home-cooking. That […]

Southern Californians should prepare for unseasonably warm temperatures and gusts of hot, dry wind beginning this weekend and leading into next week – conditions that could fuel any wildfire that breaks out in the region, fire and weather officials said. Starting Saturday, Jan. 27, warm Santa Ana winds are expected to course through, with coastal regions […]

by Izzy Pulido @ The Next Somewhere

The classic siesta originates from Spain, it’s where you just take a step back from hectic life and wind down. After all, that’s what a traditional holiday is all about right? The Spanish culture links a siesta to a long sleep or a nice nap. As the country itself can get quite hot, people get […]

Letters to the Editor (1/24/18)

by @ Seven Days | Vermont's Independent Voice, Seven Days

Don't Lock Them Up [Re Off Message: "Scott Administration Calls for a 925-Bed Prison Campus," January 15]: In regard to the governor's plan to build a new private prison in Vermont: Wouldn't it make more sense to revise the laws that lead to the incarceration of so many nonviolent offenders and necessitate out-of-state beds or new private prisons? The lifelong consequences and stigma that result from imprisonment are undeniable, regardless of any rehab that may occur during the prison sentence — never mind the expense to house prisoners. I believe it's time to consider a different way to address nonviolent crimes here in Vermont, allowing a reduction in the need for either out-of-state beds or new in-state private prisons. Beth Kiendl Brattleboro Keindl is a psychiatric RN. Cruelty to Coyotes It was good to see Molly Walsh's article [Off Message: "One Controversial Coyote Hunt Is Canceled, and Another Crops Up," January 11] in Seven Days. Until you look under the rug, you would not know there is anything wrong or unjustified going on in our own backyards. Coyote "hunters" don't advertise it, and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department turns its head. Coyote hunting is legalized animal cruelty because there are no regulations regarding this practice. Once you start really looking at what is going on, you can't turn back and pretend this is not happening. In the past few months, I have witnessed what is truly going on. Some people hate coyotes to the point where they take pride in being cruel to them: trapping, beating, sending out packs of radio-collared dogs to chase the animals to exhaustion, stacking them in dead piles — even a photo of a man holding up a dead coyote pup, looking proud of his action. I am thankful for groups such as Protect Our Wildlife for bringing these topics to the forefront, where they should be, so people can really see what is going on in our woods. Coyote hunters and trappers make it out to be such a wholesome tradition. It's anything but. Coyote contests only enable this behavior. Put regulations on coyote hunting, and say no to killing contests. Anne Macklin Richmond Housing at Any Cost? Vegetarian Food In Vietnam: The Ultimate Guide

by Jake Hornberger @ Vietcetera

Despite misconceptions, Vietnam is a country with exemplary vegetarian cuisine. There’s a long history of vegetarian food in Vietnam with its roots firmly planted in Buddhist ideologies. The key to understanding the Vietnamese vegetarian food scene is knowing what to look for and where to go in order to find it. Although plenty of standard […]
