Noi Thai coming soon to Smith St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

This is more like it. Noi Thai restaurant, which was in Richmond for many years, is relocating to Smith St in the space of the idiotic Prego Amico, which lasted less than a year. This is a better fit for the precinct and a reversal of the decline in the number of Thai restaurants in Fitzroy, with the closure of Vilom and Inter on Smith St in recent years.…

dinner at Camus in Northcote

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

Camus is a new French / Algerian restaurant on the Westgarth strip of High St in Northcote near Merricote, Bar Nonna, Curry Cafe and so on in the building that was Bar Nancy. It has been open about a month. Learning about the food of North Africa is a passion of mine, from cooking from Claudia Roden’s Arabesque: A Taste of Morocco, Turkey, and Lebanon to being a repeat visitor to the Moroccan Soup Kitchen in North Fitzroy.…

888 Sakura has closed

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

When the long lived Mao’s closed I was disappointed to see something more amateurish and downmarket open in its place. 888 Sakura served Japanese and Malaysian food, which is not the most obvious combination. It is eclipsed in dubious fusion terms by the Indian / Hungarian restaurant Diamond in Clifton Hill, but I digress.…

dinner at Shop 225 Pizzeria and fuck Uber Eats

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

Fuck Uber Eats. Fuck Uber in general. They are an economic parasite and a social cancer. Lured by the recent Good Food article listing it as one of the best pizza restaurants in Melbourne, I agreed to accompany a Coburg friend across the western border into Pascoe Vale South to eat at Shop 225 Pizzeria on Melville Rd on a balmy Friday autumn evening.…

Dolly Gray restaurant opens on Brunswick St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

Dolly Gray, seemingly named after a music hall song, has opened on Brunswick St in the space of the former Pireaus Blues. I’ve been curious to see what kind of business could make use of this large space, so another restaurant makes sense.…

Sri Lankan dinner at Pavlov’s Duck on Smith St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

Some of Fitzroy’s less hyped restaurants offer exceptional food and experiences and when I occasionally find my expectations exceeded I am pleased to be able to share it. I’ve previously enjoyed the Sri Lankan food at Pavlov’s Duck on Smith St in the form of their breakfast hoppers, but had long meant to try their Friday and Saturday night street food banquet.…

drag cabaret coming soon to Johnston St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

lunch at Manakish Bar on Lygon St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

The themed street food casual restaurant is difficult to get right. Simplify or modify the food too much and it looks bland and manufactured. Modernise and glamourise the interior design, compared to the scruffy or shabby interior the original food was served in a generation before, and you make it look even more inauthentic.…

dumplings coming to Brunswick St

by brian @ Fitzroyalty

This is a rare example of a business owner cleverly identifying an opportunity and putting the right restaurant in the right place. Yes, you can already get dumplings on Brunswick St at China Bar, but it’s not their specialty.

All too often openings on Brunswick St soon turn into closures as the wrong thing has been installed in the wrong place.…

Victoria Mill coming soon to Brunswick St
