Advice on finding a wife in the broken West...

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

I have read the forum articles on this including "strategy for an ideal wife" and Roosh's post on "the problems with teaching men how to find a wife".

As a male who buys into a lot of the red pill philosophy, many which is undeniable to our experience as men. What do you guys recommend for those who want to have a wife and family?

I in my mid 30s and can intermittently have success with women - I'm a doctor who probably can earn a lot but at the same time I probably have some beta tendencies too which I blame on myself but also my socialization in the femnized west.

I want to clearly point out I don't consider myself alpha or even a top 10% guy. I'm above average but not a 8-10 either, all things considered.

I am starting to feel frustrated maybe even mildy depressed on what's happened to the women in the west. It does appear that tinder, online dating, etc. is causing these women to have a whole bunch of beta orbiters that are giving them tons of attention.

How does a man who wants to find a wife and have a family do it in this day and age? Everyone says importing a woman will lead to her becoming westernized. Furthermore, the western women are already westernized/feminized.

I feel like I'm losing hope. Should a guy just randomly hook up with women his entire life and give up on family/wife now? Are there any good resources or tools you guys recommend? What is a good line of action in this case.

Do Not Rely Solely On Credit Cards While Traveling -- Always Carry Sufficient Cash

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

As mentioned in this article, you simply cannot count on credit cards while traveling internationally, even if you inform your banks about your overseas trip. Some great advice -- and some interesting real life examples -- about what can go wrong when carrying only credit cards. I received this article in an email today, but I was unable to find a web link (which I typically try to include).

Personally, I try to carry half the stuff I think I will need -- and twice the cash I think I will need. I have had a Schwab debit card for while, but I think that I will also look into the Fidelity debit card mentioned below.

Quote: How To Survive The Global War On Cash
Jan. 25, 2018
Taiping, Malaysia

Here's some fresh advice, something that goes against what my wife Vicki and I have been saying and doing for at least 30 years...

Carry more cash when you travel or live abroad.

I hate to recommend cash. With cash we're vulnerable to theft and loss. Some years ago friends rented a beach house in Uruguay, hid their cash under the stove, forgot about it, and later baked a pie.

They had to send the burned bills to the U.S. Bureau of Printing and Engraving and eventually received full reimbursement.

So cash presents risks. Still, I recommend more cash because of several problems in recent years...

I'm writing this in Taiping, Malaysia. On a previous trip to Malaysia I tried and failed to use my E*Trade Bank debit card in a cash machine.

Our debit cards get blocked so often, in so many places around the world, I took this snag as routine. I called E*Trade to clear my card and was assured my card was clear. The punch line: “We've blocked Malaysia.” It wasn't that my card was being blocked... it simply wouldn't be accepted in the country. I had other cards, and one worked... but what if other banks follow the E*Trade lead?

On a recent trip to Argentina, we tried half a dozen ATMs in Buenos Aires before we found one with cash. Then we were limited to only 1,000 pesos—about US$60—and were charged a fee of nearly 100 pesos. I later learned the bank stepped on the exchange rate for another 5%; my total cost to get the cash came to 15%. Fidelity reimbursed the 100-peso fee, but I was outraged.

A day later I found a machine that gave me 2,000 pesos, twice the amount, but with the same high fees. Slightly better. But the machine only let me do two transactions a day.

I finally gave up and exchanged US$100 bills with a friend. Argentines themselves seemed desperate for cash. We saw stores offering 20% discounts, even 30% discounts, simply for payment in cash. Restaurants knocked off 10% or sometimes 20% for cash or, as an alternative, added an extra 10% for a credit card. We saw so many benefits for cash, yet found it so hard, and expensive, to get the stuff from ATMs.

In Kiev, Ukraine, two years back, five or six banks had branches near our hotel. I typically had to check all or many of them before I found one with reasonable limits of US$300 or so. Others had only small bills and released only small amounts.

India has always presented cash problems. On our first trip to Mumbai (Bombay), airport ATMs were out of order. I was informed that the airport exchange dealers make sure the ATMs remain out of order.

With non-working ATMs, airport exchange dealers can collect high fees from those who need rupees to pay the cab.

Then, a couple years back, India abruptly shut down nearly the entire cash economy. Prime Minister Modi decided to make 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, some 84% of the cash money supply, worthless. He placed tight restrictions on withdrawals of the new bills and on exchanges of the old ones.

Indian ATMs remained empty for weeks. When newly designed bills finally arrived in banks, hundreds of Indians crowded in line to get their hands on the cash. Travelers relying on ATMs could get nothing or only small amounts. Friends on the ground in India reported that even dollar bills failed to buy cash rupees, simply because nearly all rupees had been taken out of circulation. Crisis. But one day those dollars bills will come in handy.

Bank of China nearly always has ATMs that work, but the problem is finding the machines in smaller cities. We decided to open a bank account in China and secure a local debit card to enable us to get cash when we needed it.

Last October, I tried to do an online purchase with my Capital One Bank Visa card. In my experience, CapOne denies most overseas online transactions, so I called to clear my US$265 charge in advance. I went through two frontline people before I got to a supervisor. She took down my information, noted the amount, and assured me my online transaction would go through. I spent over half an hour on the phone.

The next day CapOne promptly denied the transaction.

Foreign banks these days charge higher and higher ATM fees, sometimes US$6 to US$8 a pop. My favorite bankers, Schwab and Fidelity in the United States, reimburse those foreign ATM fees. But most European and American banks make you pay the foreign ATM fees and then add fees of their own, for example, three euros (or dollars) per transaction, plus 2% to 3% of the amount withdrawn.

American banks call the 2% to 3% a foreign transaction fee.

In a fairly new scam at ATMs and online, banks abroad try to convert to the card's currency—in my case dollars—at an unfavorable rate. The ATM asks, “Do you want to leave Visa's system and let us make the exchange to dollars for you?” The answer should always be “no.” Say “yes” and you get hit for an extra 3% to 7% on the exchange rate. Be careful. Often the ATMs use such convoluted wording—intentionally—that you may unwittingly permit the foreign bank to convert to dollars.

To give an example, I recently bought plane tickets from Air New Zealand's online site. I accepted the price in N.Z. dollars. After entering my U.S. card data, a message said something like, “for your convenience we have converted the amount due to US$223. If you prefer to pay in New Zealand dollars, tap here.” Naturally I did the tap.

I preferred to pay in the local currency, which converted to US$216. I saved US$7, or 3%.

Some banks—and restaurants, hotels, and websites—go ahead and convert at a rip-off rate without giving you a local currency option. I've seen this exchange-rate scam at Argentine ATMs (see above), ATMs at small banks in France, at some hotels in France, and in restaurants in Thailand. I think these rip-off conversions border on theft. Yet more and more banks around the world will likely start doing their own conversions and using their own exchange rates. The resulting mega-profits for the banks will prove irresistible.

In so many countries, debit and credit cards have become either useless, expensive, challenging, or dangerous. So many times I've put down a card to pay for dinner and been told my bank denied the transaction. So many times I've been charged extra, sometimes 10% or more, to use a credit card. So many times I've stuck a card into an ATM and been refused.

In France and Spain last year I tried self-checkout at supermarkets, only to have my U.S. card rejected because the machine required a signature. Unlike in much of the world, U.S. cards still require signatures, something Europe replaced with PINs long ago.

When it comes to cash, we're regressing. When Vicki and I first retired in the 1980s we'd go into banks all over the world. We'd put down our debit card, our passport, and get nearly whatever amount we wished. We never carried any dollars in cash. Then came ATMs, even more convenient.

We used ATMs for decades without fees and with only a few problems here and there. At times we tried to go into a bank, as in the old days, but were directed to the machines outside.

Most of today's card problems result from card fraud. Sophisticated fraudsters from Russia, Pakistan, Nigeria, the United States, and other countries rip-off ATMs, their banks, and retailers around the world.

In desperation, banks deny transactions. Call to complain, and bank people will listen sympathetically. Then the bank will deny the next transaction, too.

A friend recently traveled to Southeast Asia. As an alternative to cash, he bought travelers checks he purchased in Germany for a 1.5% fee. He found that Asian banks charged another 3% fee to cash them and then only after my friend went to the bank's head office, filled out forms, and waited hours in line. Frustrating.

Now, without banks, without machines, we're stuck. I believe we'll have to start carrying more cash, say US$2,000 or so on most trips.

If traveling to Cuba you'll need more than that to exchange for Cuban pesos, Cuba's convertible currency. You'll need more than that in Argentina, too, to avoid fees and hassle and to get a decent exchange rate. You'll need more than that in smaller African and Asian countries and even in China and Japan, where many ATMs still refuse foreign cards.

Most travelers carry an ATM card from a large European or American bank. If you use the card, figure you'll pay 10% or more on withdrawals, including local ATM fees, foreign transaction fees back home, and now the local exchange-rate rip-off explained above.

Those fees kick in provided you can find a machine that dispenses money, and that you can endure long lines, and that you can get your transaction approved.

My advice: Switch to Fidelity or Schwab in the United States. And carry a wad of hundred dollar bills in a money belt.

I hate cash, especially in high-crime countries. But I'm resigned to traveling with more of the stuff. I refuse to pay 10% to 15% of my travel money just to get a few pesos, rupees, hryvnias, or ringgits.

Dating a girl far away

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

Hello guys,

I knew this girl before Christmas in a trip (I travel often), I took her contact. She lives in another country in Europe easy to reach with low cost flights (few Euros).

She looked very interested, flirted a lot, she sent me some hot photos with whatsapp for example, and she wrote a lot too. We talked about a meeting I tried to invite her here but she didn't come (is normal is very hard the girl moves for you..). She said many times "come here and we will go out for a dinner" ect. I proposed to go the second weekend of January she said that probably she might be busy so she asked me if 19-20 weekend was fine. We did both agree for 19-20 weekend. She wrote to me a lot during the week before talking about where to go and what to do with her, she asked me to send the address of the flat I wanted to take she would help me telling if it was in a good place, she seemed really interested.
But a the end I didn't go last weekend because I had a sport injury few days before departure.

I wrote to her this Monday telling "I will come 26-27 weekend, will book you for the weekend". She reacted in a strange way, I would say "out of control". She said yes, then she started talking about her boyfriend because she will go out with a "stranger man" so he doesn't know what to tell to him. Then she told a lot of things, a lot of double binds telling things without logic. I would say the idea of seeing me will put her out of control, she also said that. One day she blocked me on whatsApp telling not to come, then in the evening she wrote me on Skype telling to come. As I said "out of control".

I booked everything for this weekend, just low cost flight and Airbnb flat. I made an insurance for 10 Euros I can delete everything and having full money back.

What do you think about her behavior?

Thanks in advance.

Tonight, a bartender pulled me a side and told me that I'm "aggressive"

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

My first reaction was what the fuck?

My game is about as chill as you can be,

"Hey, hows your night?"

That's my opener.

If girls bite, we talk. If not I dip and tell them to enjoy their night.

Simple as that.

So anyway, I like this bar it has a good vibe and the people are for the most part cool (albiet hipsters) I know some of the staff but this one cat, seems to have it out for me.

I went there tonight after seeing a garbage burlesque show and I saw two girls who seemed cool. I went up, said "hows your night" and we started talking. Her one friend started puking (she was underage lollll) and I grabbed the others number, clearly she was into me.

There was another girl there, with her boyfriend, the boyfriend went to take a piss and I grabbed a chair and purposely sat as far away from the girl as possible and we started talking about the girl that just threw up all over the place. She was laughing, the conversation had a good vibe and I had 0 intentions of picking her up I was just being social.

Mid-way through conversation, the bartender tells me to see him so I do. The boyfriend comes back and looks like he wants to fight me. I sort of wish he did, he was easily 200lbs and I'm 150 on a good day. Go ahead..fight me, prove to your girlfriend that you are intimidated by a 150lb guy. Anyways..

This was what the bartender said to me.

"Hey man, what's your deal you talk to every girl here don't you see she has a boyfriend, I've had girls complain about you and if it keeps up you will have to leave."

Straight up, this shocked me.

I told him, look dude I like girls. I'm not gonna bullshit you. Then I asked him what the girls looked like that "complained"

Told me he doesn't remember....yea right.

Then he said my approach was "aggressive"

Then he told me this bar doesn't deal with problems, we remove them.

Alright...

I'm just sort of confused.

A) I don't talk to every bloody girl at the bar. If a group or girl seems cool, I'll talk to them. Simple as that.

B) My opener is "hows your night?". How is that aggressive? I'd understand if I said, "I want to fuck you" or something else, but how the fuck is "hows your night?" aggressive.

This just seems silly. I can look from his perspective and see where he's coming from..but is talking to a girl really a big deal? It seems petty honestly.

Did girls really go up to the bartender and say "this guy is making me uncomfortable?" , I'll admit my game isn't amazing but I can't think of any instance where I felt the girl was uncomfortable. I usually dip before shit gets to that point.

The funny thing is, I thought this bartender was a cool cat I thought he knew the game and so on. Now I have my doubts. I wonder if he's just jealous and a pussy white knight.

He's been there for a very long time and I'm in a smallish town. Word will travel fast, if I fuck things up here then there goes my ability to lock down the bars which is why I didn't call him out tonight. Plus, it's a very popular bar with the girls I'm into. If I get banned, it's gonna fuck things up.

I'm pretty new to night game, I'm sure this isn't an uncommon thing so I want other cats to weigh in.

What's the move? Stop talking to girls at this bar? What if word has travelled? How do I avoid this in other bars? Maybe I need to use nightlife for dates, instead of meeting girls.

Part of me wishes I had 3 models at my disposal right now to bring to this bar and give this guy a big fuck you in the best way possible, but unfortunately I don't.

Anyways, whats your opinions?

Learning Game Systematically

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

Intro

As a technically-oriented gamer, I like to focus on building strong fundamentals that work with a targeted pool of girls rather than jumping around haphazardly & hoping something "sticks". In other words, I like to learn game so I can improve systematically rather than continuously jumping into the field & hoping improvement happens somehow.

With that in mind, here's my system (inspired by Todd Valentine, other styles of game, & my own experiences) of how any gamer of any level (beginner / intermediate / advanced) can approach game & not be confused by all the varying advice & styles.

Preliminary Life Basics

I'll keep this section short as it's not a direct part of game, but by no means less important (arguably more important).

Health
By not having good health, you simply will not have the energy nor means to go out into the field repeatedly to improve your game. Nutrition/exercise/sleep compromise any healthy lifestyle. Don't underestimate each component's importance.

Finance
A limit on finance can impair your ability to access the type of girls you desire in the 1st place. Good financial health expands your ability to access & attract girls. Simple as that.

With that said, let's get down to...

Game

1. Access

It all starts here. You can have awesome Attract & Follow Through skills (see the following sections for more details), but if you have poor access you will get exactly that: poor results.

Like other serious-minded gamers, I've dived into this deeply and determined the exact countries that have the girl types I am most attracted to. That's right, any serious gamer will begin with the country in mind. Violate this rule & you automatically reduce your efficiency by 50% (leaving a controllable variable to luck).

This is why I've spent countless hours scoping the Travel forums here (greatest resource on global pickup info. I've seen) as well as other web sources to determine which types of girls I ultimately am most attracted to & want to spend focused effort on attracting.

I've developed this to the point I automatically can meet girls from all over the world and determine quickly whether I want to invest effort or not. I can attract another man's 9-10, but to me she may be only an 8 or 7 because I simply am not as attracted to her type as much as for the other guy. I automatically do not place any pressure on myself when interacting w/her & it's interesting to see how I can create attraction quite "naturally" this way.

The point is efficiency. Once you've pinpointed your targeted countr(ies) of focus, the next should be knowing the language well. This is a topic you can already dive into based on existing discussions so I'll keep it short here (although I can expand on more later if needed). Then comes narrowing down from the country to the cities. From there, the ideal locations in the cities. In other words, LOGISTICS.

Logistics
A king element of game. Which is why I've spent & will continue to spend a good chunk of time improving logistics knowledge. You simply will have better problem-solving skills for moving / bouncing / pulling girls around with solid logistics knowledge. I will determine which girls to follow up on & forgo Day 2's if I sense logistics are not in my favor. I don't eliminate prospects on a strict basis since they are still learning opportunities, but I would be a fool to not prioritize prospects based on logistical advantage.

2. Attract
This is where things get interesting. 50% of Attract & everything I said before is "Off Field". Meaning these are things you do as homework before even stepping onto the field. The other 50% is active work where you finally step foot onto the field & start approaching & taking action on attracting the girls of your desired type.

Let's begin w/homework:

Appearance
As with the other critical elements of homework (countr(ies) of focus, logistics, etc.) without getting appearance in order you will simply get sub-optimal results in the field.

The key thing in appearance is to dress for your target demographic. If you're into goth hip-hop girls, you simply can't maximize your results if you're dressed like a James Bond suited ace. Not to say you won't get results (dressing well in whatever style is generally still good), but dressing towards your target demographic simply builds attraction & comfort with the girls more than if you had not. You save a significant amount of energy & time by simply dressing to her value model so the interaction starts off on the right foot right off the bat.

The remaining 50% of Attract is straightforward & what is the absolute fundamental 1st step of any gamer: the approach. There are many different styles of approach, so I won't dive deep into here for now as this topic is well studied. I can expand on later if needed.

3. Follow Through
Here's where we get down to active game execution after gaining her attraction. This includes comfort, text game, Day 2's, blah blah blah. Standard stuff that any gamer who has done some study will know. I can also expand on this later as I feel a majority of game material has discussed this already.

Summary
So my point is, game can be studied & learned systematically. By following the priority of the critical elements of game listed above, you will always progress in an optimal way (rather than shooting in the dark & hoping for results). I see learning game systematically as a great & fascinating viewpoint that essentially does what it says: treats it as a "game".

They are of course much more reliable than the Russian or Chinese bikes many companies are still using. You can check why our customers liked them here. They not only offer you power and smooth operation but also guarantee a trouble-free and safe trip with disc brake(s). We own these bikes, maintain them ourselves and don’t use rental bikes from any company. Rental bikes are ridden by riders of all skill levels and are usually older or lower in quality. This is a very big difference that many companies do not mention about the rental bikes they use. With this special cooperation, you can book one long tour just through one click and leave the rest to us. Our team has been offering motorbike tours for women since 2007. In fact, these tours are with slower riding and more stops so you can meet and talk with local people. Always keep in mind that all our tours and/or proposals can be customized before and during the journey, taking into account road and weather conditions as well as your riding ability and changes in your expectations. Information The webmasters at Offroad Vietnam work around the clock to upload the latest information about travelling in Vietnam, tours with places still available. We own a really big database of over 150 tours and thousands of photos and video shot on the roads which enable us to design and send you a virtual tour shortly we receive your inquiry. We have been trying to create one of the most interactive websites for touring Vietnam. You can read what experience and/or thoughts the most recent customers said about our tours and/or services. In fact, they are provided “as is” and we don’t alter anything at all. A detailed FAQs page is the first thing you can check before sending an inquiry to save your time and ours. We also provide free broadband Internet access and photo burning on CDs or DVDs to our clients. All the photos will be backed up on our hard disk and you can get them back anytime if you lose your camera or your memory card is lost or damaged. Bloomberg: High Cost of Free Speech

by @ Roosh V Forum - All Forums

Bloomberg comes out with an article detailing the costs of (mostly, right-wing) protests around the country. Expect this to become a key argument in favor of restricting "problematic" protests to "free speech" zones.

Quote:The High Cost of Free Speech, From Charlottesville to the Women’s March
The security bill for one smaller rally was $84,281 for body cameras, $14,982 for a chain-link fence, $823 for 250 Chick-fil-A sandwiches for the police ...

The Women’s March in Washington on Saturday, Jan. 20, might have been the 8,701st protest in the U.S. since Donald Trump’s inauguration a year ago. Or maybe there were more. Even the Crowd Counting Consortium, run by two university professors, with lots of volunteer help, can’t track all the rallies and marches since Trump took office. But they do know that between anti-Trump protests, rallies by white nationalist groups, and counterprotests against both, Americans have been exercising their First Amendment rights at a frenetic pace.

Amid the commotion and disruption, the price of free speech has gone up. The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech in public spaces: It’s a civic right with civic costs. The Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that the government can’t impose fees on speakers based on the expected cost of security. “Speech cannot be financially burdened, any more than it can be punished or banned, simply because it might offend a hostile mob,” Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in a decision prohibiting Forsyth County, Ga., from charging the Nationalist Movement a fee to demonstrate against Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The result, says David Pozen, a visiting scholar at Columbia’s Knight First Amendment Institute, has been that the public now effectively subsidizes the speech not only of peaceful protests like the 200 or so Women’s Marches that took place across the U.S. this January, but also that of the most controversial, inflammatory figures, even when they’re just looking for a fight. It’s the provocateurs’ privilege. “The more provocative a speaker, the more costly it is to manage that event and the more ordinary people are going to have to bear those costs,” Pozen says.

When a group called the New Confederate States of America planned a rally on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Va., in mid-September, the city spent $570,000 to provide security. The bill included $84,280.85 for body cameras, $14,982 for a chain-link fence around the nearby Arthur Ashe Jr. Athletic Center, and $822.50 for 250 Chick-fil-A sandwiches for police officers. Half a dozen people showed up to march near a statue of Robert E. Lee; many times that number came out to protest. A League of the South rally in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in October didn’t amount to much either, except in costs to the city and county, about $350,000 in all.

Berkeley, Calif., has borne a particular burden. “We represent progressive forward thinking, and the white supremacists and hate groups come here to challenge us, provoke us, thumb their nose at us,” says Mayor Jesse Arreguin. His office estimates that it spent an additional $1 million for police and fire officers over the past year. “That had a significant impact on our city budget—it’s money not available for affordable housing, infrastructure, and crime prevention,” Arreguin says. The University of California at Berkeley paid an even higher price for its commitment to free speech in 2017: Five planned rallies and talks—including a Free Speech Week organized by the self-described right-wing troll Milo Yiannopoulos, which was ultimately canceled but still led to violence among those gathered—came to $4.84 million. The university, already tackling a $110 million deficit, spent more than $200,000 on barricades alone.

Even peaceful defiance has had a price. In August the city spent $4,000 to print 20,000 posters that read “Berkeley stands united against hate.” (The bill for that was crowdfunded.)

At the center of the controversy over how much the public should have to pay is Richard Spencer, the white nationalist who gave a Nazi salute to a cheering crowd after Trump’s election, was punched in the head outside the inauguration, and called the August tiki-torch march in Charlottesville, Va., “magical.” A supporter of Spencer, Cameron Padgett, has sued several public universities that refused to allow Spencer to speak on campus, claiming they were denying his First Amendment rights. In April, Auburn University in Alabama agreed to pay $29,000 in legal costs after Padgett successfully challenged its attempt to cancel Spencer’s speech, and Padgett recently brought a lawsuit against the University of Cincinnati for seeking a $10,833 security fee because of the disruption it anticipates when Spencer comes to campus during the school’s spring break.

On Oct. 19, Spencer arrived at the University of Florida in Gainesville with a small entourage. He hadn’t been invited, and he wouldn’t be welcomed, but he had the First Amendment on his side—and a $10,564 contract covering an auditorium rental on the edge of campus and basic security for the venue. Providing some of that security was Ricardo Delbrey, a 33-year-old black Puerto Rican police officer at the University of Central Florida in Orlando who was born on a naval base in Spain and served in Afghanistan.

For about a month, local law enforcement agencies had planned how to keep Spencer supporters from around the country—whom they expected to be armed and hostile—separate from the protesters, mostly angry students, and what to do if they encountered one another. The potential for violence was high, and three days before the speech, Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency. The night before the speech, Delbrey was told that he would be stationed inside the auditorium, in front of the stage, the last line of defense for Spencer. “It was kind of mixed feelings for me when I found out, being a military man and fighting for rights, for the Constitution, but knowing what he preaches,” Delbrey says. “Why am I protecting someone who preaches things I don’t believe? I had to keep in mind that this is what I signed up for.”

On Oct. 19, a SWAT team was on campus, helicopters were in the sky, and emergency responders stood by. The university sealed off roads, closed buildings, and canceled some classes. Inside the auditorium, students and other protesters shouted down Spencer, who insulted them and left the stage early. The protesters then chased his supporters off campus. Three white nationalists from Texas were arrested after one fired a single shot into the crowd.

Spencer says his talks are supposed to “make a splash,” and by that measure he considers the event, such as it was and as expensive as he says it was for him, a success. So does the university: The violence was brief and caused no serious injury. But the school spent far more than Spencer—some $600,000, much of it for overtime for the hundreds of security personnel. That figure doesn’t account for the untold hours spent calming anxious students and planning an alternative rally on the other side of campus.

Was it worth it? “Yes,” says Delbrey. “Free speech is what the nation is founded on. If we stop him, someone could stop others who are worth listening to. Everybody has the right to freedom of speech. But we have the freedom to listen—or not. He can talk, but you don’t have to listen.”

Many of the 85 or so businesses along the city’s eight-block pedestrian mall opened their doors on Aug. 12, even as thousands of white nationalists and militia members marched to nearby Emancipation Park for the Unite the Right Rally. A few minutes after noon, when violent clashes with counterprotesters persuaded Governor Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency, most everyone closed up shop. About an hour later, Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others injured when a white nationalist drove into a crowd.

“We don’t have a way to calculate the losses from that weekend,” says Joan Fenton, owner of Quilts Unlimited and chair of the Downtown Business Association. The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce does. It reports that sales tax revenue declined 11.8 percent in September from the year before. “Those creeps invaded our town, hijacked our identity, and caused tremendous damage to our business community and our psyche,” says Timothy Hulbert, the chamber’s president. Even if the city offers a recovery package, Fenton expects that some businesses will close and that it will be at least a year before Charlottesville recovers. “We’ve been branded,” she says.

As police prepared for a White Lives Matter march through downtown, David Sproles, a financial adviser at Edward Jones, decided to board up his office and another one nearby. A Free Speech Week organized by former Breitbart News columnist Milo Yiannopoulos turned into a 15-minute appearance at the University of California at Berkeley, where Yiannopoulos signed autographs and posed for selfies. “The most expensive photo op in the university’s history,” spokesman Dan Mogulof called it at the time.

A year after Trump’s inauguration, tens of thousands of protesters marched from the Lincoln Memorial, down 17th Street, and to the White House. Like the 2017 march, the event was relatively peaceful—the organizers’ main security concern this year was people walking on the frozen Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as the temperature rose. Even peaceful protests can be expensive, but no official was prepared to estimate the cost of the two Women’s Marches. Congress sets aside money each year to help the city cover the costs of First Amendment activities.

Patriot Prayer, a pro-Trump group led by Joey Gibson, abruptly canceled plans for a controversial free speech march and rally at Crissy Field near the Golden Gate Bridge. The National Park Service had granted the group a permit despite objections from the city. According to records obtained by the San Francisco Examiner, the city spent $775,000 on public safety and $115,000 on extra buses and traffic control. The mayor’s office says it has requested reimbursement from the federal government.
