An Unintended Trip to Sula Vineyards: Discovering India’s Napa Valley in Nasik
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Mon Jan 08 23:31:31 PST 2018
A 3 to 4 hour drive from Mumbai, Sula Vineyards is the oldest winery in India. It is a fabulous way to unwind from the hectic bustle of city life, where you can discover the place where Indians first experienced wine.
In 1996, Rajeev Samant planted the first wine grapes in Nashik and today this region is India’s premier wine-growing region, producing 80% of the country’s total wine.
Spread over a total of over 3000 acres, Sula’s vineyards are home to some of India’s finest grapes, so if you’re looking for a place for your next wine tour, you should visit Nashik, in Maharashtra state.
This is India’s Napa Valley; after Sula Vineyards was established in 1999, 35 other wineries followed suit in the region over the next decade. It’s quite incredible how one man paved the way for the emergence of India’s Wine Capital.

How to Fika like a local (and the best places in Stockholm)
by Little Grey Box @ Little Grey Box
Mon Jan 22 22:10:55 PST 2018
One of the wonderful things about travel is the unique cultural experiences you get to witness and take part in. Of all the wonderful, weird and unique cultural pastimes I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying, Sweden’s beloved Fika is by far my favourite. In it’s simplest form, Fika is a coffee break. But it really is so much more than that, it’s a chance to slow down, disconnect from everything else and connect with the person in front of you or simply reconnect with yourself. It’s not about quickly slurping down a takeaway cup of coffee and chewing down a pastry while running between meetings, it’s about sitting down to enjoy every drop of your del@icious coffee and savour each bite of your perfect pastry. It’s about community, connection and being present. Unexpectedly, I began to look forward to Fika each day during our time in Stockholm and the Stockholm Archipelago. Each time we’d see our guide from Visit Stockholm her first question would be, “Have you had a Fika yet?” When we’d go to a new hotel, cafe or attraction, the lovely locals would always ask, “Do you need a Fika?” In those moments, you get the sense your [...]

Thanks to appearances in countless Hollywood movies, Las Vegas has been widely regarded as the gambling capital of the world, with the bright lights of Sin City drawing visitors from around the globe for many decades.
However, the famous Nevada city can no longer claim to be the king of casino culture, and, in truth, hasn’t been for just over a decade now.
Rising to park itself firmly on that particular throne is Macau, which has transformed itself remarkably from what was once a sleepy fishing port to a booming Asian tourist destination at the top of many ‘must visit’ lists. Move over Las Vegas, because Macau is where the action is!

The Week That Was – #35

A look at the week that was and a little insight into the #bloglife, sharing things I just can’t share anywhere else! Highlights of the week It has felt like things started to get back to normal this week. Most people returned to work and I’ve had more emails come through, which is always a good thing. This week for me has been a week of getting things done and doing things I have wanted and needed to do! Everyone went out on Saturday, leaving me home alone with a box of semi-permanent pink hair colour. I love putting colours in my hair but I get a bit nervous sometimes that other people won’t like it, so I don’t do it. With my newfound ‘I don’t care’ attitude (read last week’s TWTW if you missed it) I had no reservations doing it. It didn’t take long at all and was actually pretty easy. Unlike past attempts, I actually took my time doing it and gave it my best ‘professional’ effort. It turned out amazing and I loved it! While I didn’t do it for anyone else, everyone I came across said they loved it too. My grandma, neighbours, friends – it was [...]

Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE

In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?
Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »

Four Places Worth Visiting in Santorini
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Thu Dec 28 04:21:25 PST 2017
As your ferry approaches the port of Santorini and you watch the island getting closer and closer, it’s easy to believe that you’re sailing into the view of one of Alfred Sislay’s idyllic paintings.
On the southernmost border of the Aegean archipelago, Santorini is not only considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, but one of the most stunning in the world.
Once you set foot on the island, Santorini will take you on a trip into its past: it’s here you’ll come face to face with the ancient Minoan civilization and the magnificent frescoes it left behind, the grand and fearsome eruption of its volcano and the huge caldera that’s still marveled at by thousands of tourists each year, and of course, its beautiful re-birth as one of the most picturesque places of this Earth.
These are the four top places to visit while you’re there.

Dear Female Travelers: Reasons Knixwear Is the Greatest Travel Underwear You’ll Ever Own!
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Fri Dec 29 02:13:02 PST 2017
Forget your passport, when it comes to travel, appropriate underwear is one of the most essential things. (Don’t actually forget your passport, but I’m sure you get what I meant!)
But traditional cotton underwear isn’t always the best option for travel – they’re slow drying and they absorb moisture meaning cotton isn’t the most comfortable or hygienic thing to wear for extended periods of time.
Underwear might be one of those things you don’t think twice about, but purchasing a pair for the practicalities of travel can make or break a trip. There are plenty of options out there for travel-specific underwear, but when it comes to being specifically designed for women, Knixwear is a Canadian based brand you should know.

8 Easy ways to beat the back-to-work blues
by Little Grey Box @ Little Grey Box
Mon Jan 08 20:30:55 PST 2018
The end of the year brings much fun and excitement. We get to take time away from work, maybe go on holidays, spend time with loved ones, eat our favourite foods and completely disconnect from our day-to-day routine. It’s a much-needed opportunity to rest, recharge and refresh. Sadly, the holidays always come to an end and, sooner or later, we have to go back to work. Coming back to the office after such a great time away, staring down the barrel of another 12 months of work, can be overwhelming. To help you survive your return to the workplace after an epic festive season, here are 8 easy ways you can beat the back-to-work blues. 1. Start planning your next holiday This is my personal favourite suggestion on this list! While there’s a good chance you may not financially be ready to start splashing out money on a holiday post-festive season, that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning. Go to your favourite travel agent and get some brochures for inspiration, set the wallpaper on your phone and computer to your next holiday destination and pin a few photos, postcards or holiday inspiration around your desk. Rather than focusing on being [...]

Did You Know Australia Has Pink Lakes?? You Have To See These To Believe!
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Thu Jan 18 16:56:11 PST 2018
It was the crack of dawn but Peter and Jeanie Kelly from Murray Offroad Adventures were on time and ridiculously chirpy. All it took, however, was a dash down the Mallee Highway and a quick pit stop at the Hattah General store (Jeanie phoned our coffee order ahead, the star) for those early-morning dozy feels to disappear as the day started to brighten and the temperature began to rise.
The pink lakes of Murray Sunset National Park are truly breathtaking. Endlessly blue skies sit against bright pink waters and sparkling salt deposits; this is one phenomenon you have to see to believe.

How to Book the Cheapest Hotels in 2018 (Which Match Your Travel Style Perfectly)
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Mon Jan 15 03:57:44 PST 2018
One of my biggest pieces of advice for booking a hotel has always been to ask yourself why. And the answer should be beyond the obvious “I need a place to stay for the night”.
Because millions of people are booking into hotels every night. But how many of them are actually getting their choice right?
The solution? Nustay; a new hotel search engine which has 1.2 million hotels at rates cheaper than any other online booking site (seriously). And, by crunching data about your interests, it matches you with hotels which reflect your travel style.

Why Sri Lanka Inspires for a Second Trip

Since I started travelling four years ago, I have been lucky enough to experience truly varied cultures and places, many of which I hold dear. Sri Lanka, however, has always had a special place in my heart and I’ve made it my mission to convince everyone else of its merits.
Despite a troubled past, Sri Lanka and its people are well on their way to a full recovery. More than that, they are very welcoming to people who wish to experience the beauty of their country and perhaps contribute a bit to stimulating the local economy.
I had such a great experience in Sri Lanka that I even decided to start my own blog about the country and inspire as many people as possible to visit! You can find the blog at takemetosrilanka.com.
With friendly people, incredible food, and stunning locations throughout the country, there are plenty of reasons to choose Sri Lanka as your holiday destination. You’ll love Sri Lanka for the following reasons, and it’s for these reasons that the country will inspire a second trip!

5 of SAIGON’S BEST HIDDEN COCKTAIL BARS
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Mon Oct 02 14:18:01 PDT 2017
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a place of surprises, much of them elusive to first-time visitors with just a few days on the ground. Though a bit challenging at first, Ho Chi Minh City eventually became our favorite city in the world and a base for many of our adventures in the Southeast Asian region. It’s also a pretty great place to go out and grab a drink, whether it’s a Monday or Saturday, Saigon’s music venues, breathtaking rooftop bars, and tiny neighborhood spots are buzzing.
Unlike the more world famous, easy-to-find spots of Bangkok and Shanghai, Saigon is a city of tight neighborhoods which unveil themselves only to those intrepid enough to explore the tiniest, faintest lines on the map. Saigon doesn’t have a Times Square or Pudong. It’s a megacity comprised of small, distinct districts and alleys. Perch ... Read More »

Where to Lose and … Find Yourself in Greek Mykonos
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Thu Dec 21 05:34:29 PST 2017
The Aegean Sea has been characterized by many as the heart of the Mediterranean and has been commonly linked to colorful mythology, tales of pirates and fishermen, and, in recent years, as the hot-spot of cosmopolitan summer party life for island-hoppers.
Among the family of the Aegean islands however, stands one in particular which is perhaps its most precious jewel: Mykonos beams effervescently due west and it’s certainly not shy at showing it.
Being the favourite destination of vacationists worldwide, Mykonos has become synonymous to beautiful, luxurious and vibrant vacations. But Mykonos is so much more than what the eye meets: it’s actually the ideal place where you can lose yourself on its surface and also find it in its depth.

Things You Should Consider as a Responsible Traveler / EcoTourist in 2018
by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan
Sat Dec 30 16:24:10 PST 2017
We’ve all seen the obnoxious tourists waddling out of Subway in some beautiful, ancestral city. Chances are, if you catch us on the right day, we’ve all been that tourist.
There is, however, a revolution in tourism that is really starting to take off. A whole new way of thinking which prioritizes responsible travel, and considers the impact we have on the communities and environments we visit abroad.
The negative impacts of tourism are usually pretty clear to the traveler feeling particularly perceptive. But ecotourism is the belief that travel should be ultimately beneficial to both the tourist and the host country.
There is a balance we should all try to find while traveling: remain safe but also truly experience the local scene. Make ripples, but not a splash. Take only memories, leave only footprints. The following are four key things to consider for those looking to travel responsibly in 2018.

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local
by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Jun 18 10:31:49 PDT 2015
Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.
Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Sun Oct 22 16:37:56 PDT 2017
Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.
Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

Well, in this instance, it’s an eight-week program run by Screen Queensland and the guys at Changer. It will connect the eight chosen channels with key experts who can educate us and share valuable insight on how we can meet our goals. Beyond that, for Matt and me, it’ll help us get closer to our big goal of our travel show! We met with the guys at Changer Studios this week and shared all our goals, strengths, weaknesses, what we do and don’t know, what we want to work on and more. It was really detailed and a great way for us to put into perspective where we’re at and what we want to get out of the program. Between now and our meeting next week, our channel is being analysed by one heck of an expert who knows a LOT about YouTube and its algorithm. I’m really excited to hear what he [...]

The 5 Best Night Markets in Taipei
by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Feb 25 18:45:38 PST 2016
Taipei is inarguably one of the top street food cities in the world. Taiwan is known as the land of snacks: they have literally invented and re-invented genre after genre of snack food over the years. From pearl tea to fried chicken, the Taiwanese are all about inventing and perfecting the ultimate snack foods. Think Chinese-influenced foods created with the ingenuity and dedication to perfection that (you would think) only the Japanese would bring. While Taipei isn’t quite as famous with local Taiwanese as Tainan for their snack culture, they’ve got it covered and will most likely be your first stop in Taiwan. ‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu May 01 04:30:42 PDT 2014
“a place around the bend where he could jump off”
Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?
A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »
