A Very Merry Christmas In Arizona & Tennessee

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Before we spent Christmas in Arizona last year, my list of countries visited was almost triple that of US States I’d seen. Believe me, I’m not telling you this in an attempt to humble brag about how many countries I’ve been to, because in the grand scheme of things I actually haven’t been to all that many. I’m telling you this so you know just how little I’ve seen of my own country. It’s something that bothers me more and more every year as I continue to see the rest of the world while my home country stays mostly undiscovered. But that’s an entirely different topic for an entirely different day, because today (and the whole month, really) is about Christmas. Last year’s Christmas to be exact. During our years in London, we were only able to make one trip back to the US every year and usually chose to take it over the summer when Lexie’s school break was longer. But as it happened with our move mid-way through the year to Singapore, we were lucky enough to get two trips back in 2016, one in the summer and one for the holidays. It had been three years since […]

Happy New Year From Singapore!

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Happy New Year from Singapore! I thought I was going to have something a little more interesting to share with you today, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans… Make them, and a giant monsoon will come through and wreck them all. Okay, maybe that’s not what they say. But that’s what happened. Our plan had been to go down to the Marina Bay area and watch Singapore’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show from across the water. I’d been looking forward to it for months and even knew exactly where I wanted to sit for the best view with the least amount of people. (Gardens by the Bay East, in case you’re curious.) It was going to be just like that time we watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London, but without the triple layers of clothing and threat of frostbite. And then the monsoon came through. It arrived with gusto during the night on New Year’s Eve Eve. Waking all of us up with its thunderous arrival, I actually smiled to myself, thinking Oh good, we’ll just get all this pesky rain business out of the way now! But when raindrops were still pelting against […]

Hiking In The Superstition Mountains In Arizona

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

You wanna know something cool about Arizona? It’s possible to go hiking in the mountains less than a week before Christmas with absolutely no need for snowshoes, three layers of clothing, or even a jacket. And not only is it possible, it’s comfortable. In fact, I’d say December is probably when you want to go hiking in Arizona, unless sweating yourself into dehydration is your idea of a good time. (Just kidding. I actually know nothing about hiking in Arizona in the summer, but my guess is it’s pretty freaking hot.) When we flew back to the US for Christmas following our move to Singapore, our first stop was Arizona. We arrived on a Saturday evening, utterly exhausted and ready for bed, but if there’s one thing that can cure jet lag faster than any other, it’s getting outside as soon as possible. So first thing the next morning, we headed out for a hike. Our destination: the Superstition Mountains. THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS The Superstition Mountains, locally known as the Superstitions, are a range of mountains located about an hour’s drive east of Phoenix. Part of the Superstition Wilderness Area, the Superstition Mountains have a wide variety of trails to […]

4 Amazing Beaches To Visit In Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

When I was growing up, only two things mattered to me when we traveled – could I shop there and how close was the beach? (You’re impressed with my teenage self’s deep and varied interests, I can tell.) I’m pleased to tell you my passions in life have expanded a great deal since those early years of travel, and I can’t even remember the last time I went shopping, but I’m not going to lie, I still love a good beach. And so, at least once a year, we go in search of the very best ones. Living here in Southeast Asia, we are spoiled with hundreds (possibly even thousands) of beautiful beaches right at our fingertips. It makes choosing between them all a near-impossible task. (I know, what a predicament.) When, after much research and deliberation, we finally settled on Railay Beach for our Chinese New Year holiday last year, I was fairly certain we were picking one of the very best beach destinations in Thailand…and I wasn’t wrong. Railay blew us away with its beauty and completely chill vibe! Check out our full guide to Railay, Thailand here! While there is more to Railay than just its beaches, […]

Scenes From A Singapore Christmas + An Announcement

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Satay roasting on an open fire. Sweat droplets dripping from your nose. Construction carols being sung by heavy equipment hire. And folks dressed up in very little clothes. Sorry, I’ve never been particularly skilled at rhyming, so that’s the best I’ve got for you. But if you ask me, it’s still a fairly accurate depiction of a Singapore Christmas…for those of us used to a more northern hemisphere Christmas anyway! Since we returned to the US for Christmas last year, this year’s Christmas was the first one we actually got to spend in our new country. And despite my terrible attempt at a humorous ‘Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire’ parody, celebrating Christmas in Singapore wasn’t actually all that bad. In fact, it was pretty darn amazing. (Once we got used to the fact that the weather was never going to feel very Christmasy.) The holiday season officially begins in Singapore the first week of October. That’s when the Christmas lights and decorations start going up on Orchard Road and stores begin advertising their holiday sales. It’s a little early if you ask me, but I can’t really say anything. We never even took our Christmas lights down after last […]

Tips For Driving The Apache Trail In Arizona

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Planes, trains, boats, buses. We’ve traveled to a lot of places in a lot of different ways, but my favorite is still the old fashioned road trip. There’s so much freedom in hopping in your own vehicle and being able to stop whenever and wherever you please. Plus, of the top five ways to get from A to B, it’s the best choice if you happen to be traveling through scenic areas. We’ve been fortunate enough to take some pretty scenic drives over the past few years. (The Scottish Highlands and Western Cornwall are two that come to mind!) And while we were in Arizona visiting family for Christmas last year, we got the opportunity to take another – the historic Apache Trail drive. THE APACHE TRAIL WHAT IS IT? Historically, the Apache Trail was used as a migration route by the Apaches (hence the name) to travel from their winter homes in the desert lowlands to their summer homes in the mountains. Later, after Anglo-American soldiers and gold-seekers arrived, it became a popular stagecoach route. Today, it is one of Arizona’s most dramatic scenic drives weaving through rugged mountains and alongside sparkling desert lakes and terrifying cliff drop-offs. HOW […]

Hiking To Railay Viewpoint And Lagoon In Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Like most routine-weary travelers, I love a good beach break. Nothing beats laying on sun-warmed sand, listening to the waves crash against the shore, and forgetting, at least for a little while, that anything exists outside of relaxed moments like these. But I’m also your stereotypical Type A traveler, which means my enjoyment of doing nothing at all has an expiration date. I can switch from relaxed to restless in mere seconds, and then it’s time to find something to do. Lucky for me and the rest of you sporting an overabundance of energy, in addition to being a prime beach destination, Railay also offers all sorts of ways to stay active. My favorite of these was hiking to Railay Viewpoint and the hidden lagoon. This hike, with its demanding trail bordering on treacherous, was exactly the sort of pick-me-up I needed after a day where the most physical activity I got was moving from the beach to the pool! FINDING THE TRAIL TO RAILAY VIEWPOINT & LAGOON While not exactly hidden, the beginning of the trail up to Railay Viewpoint is easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. The trailhead is directly across from a small […]

Railay Phutawan Resort: A Tropical Getaway In Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Is there anything more time-consuming during travel planning than searching for the perfect accommodations? Don’t get me wrong, I truly love this part of planning a vacation, but it does take a lot of time to sort through each and every property in our budget before finally making a decision. It might seem a little silly to spend hours searching for something we’re hardly going to do more than sleep in, but for me, a good night’s sleep and waking up in a place that puts me in a good mood every morning is well worth the time and effort put in to find it. That being said, sometimes it is a relief to have limited places to choose from which was the case in Railay, Thailand. Railay is a small peninsula in the Krabi province of Thailand sporting mostly wild jungle (which separates it from the mainland), but also several world-class beaches. Because of its small size, Railay only has a couple dozen different resorts and hotels which made my job of finding the right one a whole lot easier! With a maximum budget of $100/night and our preference towards a villa or cottage, we were able to settle […]

The Ultimate Travel Guide To Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

It’s been quite some time since I’ve written about any of our Asia explorations. To remedy this oversight, we are going to kick off a new year of travel tales with a guide to one of my favorite destinations in Southeast Asia – Railay Beach in Krabi, Thailand! We arrived in Railay about this time last year for a short break over the Chinese New Year holiday. I’ll get to why you shouldn’t book over CNY in a minute, but first I want to tell you about this place – this magically wonderful place that has the power to transform even the most uptight of us (I’m talking about me here) into completely relaxed, pad-thai-eating beach bums without a care in the world in under 24 hours. A mix of dramatic limestone cliffs, postcard-worthy beaches, and thick jungle, Railay truly has it all, scenery and activity-wise. But what really makes this spot unique (and what makes it […]
