1940-44: Camillien Houde & Other Quebec Curios

by T. A. Wellington @ Montreal Rampage

Camillien Houde, at one-time part of the provincial Conservative Party and a collaborator with Maurice Duplessis, found provincial politics boring and decided to try his hand in municipal politics. His first adversary, Médéric Martin, was the incumbent mayor for fourteen years, but Houde managed to dethrone Martin after accusing him of election fraud. Bouncing back and forth between provincial and municipal politics, Houde was mayor of Montréal twice and was serving a third term just as the Second World War broke out. Adélard Godbout‘s trials with conscription and its intricate connection with orders from Ottawa, ultimately one of the reasons for his downfall, would come later. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s trials, however, were just beginning. As the war was getting started, Mackenzie King imposed mandatory inscription starting in August of 1940. It was not conscription, but shadows of the conscription that occurred during the First World War loomed large over Canada. Camillien Houde, by all accounts a man quite literally larger than life (weighing in at over two hundred and forty pounds), flamboyant, and most of all outspoken, would not let Ottawa’s declaration go by without a comment of his own. Defiantly declaring that the federal government had [...]

Frank Bello on Anthrax’s New Tour and Future Plans

Frank Bello on Anthrax’s New Tour and Future Plans

by Jean-Frederic Vachon @ Montreal Rampage

It’s hard to believe that Anthrax has been active for close to 37 years. And since their formation in 1981, Anthrax must have played Montreal at least 20 times, in various lineup configurations. However, if the members sometimes changed, one constant remained for the New York thrash metal veterans: they delivered a kick ass metal show, every single time. “Montreal has always been one of my favorite places,” admits bassist Frank Bello. “The crowds are always insane and they bring it to us, and I love that.” However, a Montreal visit brings off stage preoccupations for Bello. “The shows are always great; I never have to worry about that. Do you know what I have to worry about?” he adds laughing. “How much I’m eating before the show because the food… I know so many great food places in Montreal. I have to watch what I eat because there’s a show that night!” If many of their contemporaries from the 80’s are content to surf on the strength of their classic material, Anthrax has enjoyed a revival of sorts since singer Joey Belladonna rejoined the band. Starting with 2011’s “Worship Music”, but especially with 2016’s “For All Kings”, the band’s [...]

1940: Votes for Women & Other Quebec Curios

1940: Votes for Women & Other Quebec Curios

by T. A. Wellington @ Montreal Rampage

Shortly before the end of World War I, certain groups of women were able to vote in federal elections, on the condition that they were working for the military or a male relative was working in the military. By 1918, women who were twenty-one years old and over were able to vote in federal elections. Province by province, women were able to vote on not only for their federal government but their provincial one as well. Even friendly neighbour (and yet to be province) Labrador had granted women the right to vote in domestic elections in 1925. However, by the 1930s, Québec women still could not vote provincially, even though they were able to vote for a federal leader. Opposition for women’s vote came from both men and women. The traditional view was that a woman was a homemaker and a mother. People who did not believe that women should vote because it would break these traditional societal structures. These beliefs were engrained in law: as far back as the codification of civil law, women were incapable of dealing with their property by themselves and had to have male guardians approve of and make decisions in their place.
