Cambodians speak Khmer. Julie speaks Khmer. Speak Julie Speak.

by Julie @ Plan Pack Go

Two weeks before our trip to Cambodia and Vietnam I realized I hadn’t learned any Khmer. Yikes! I’d focused solely on Vietnamese, partly because we’d spend four of our five weeks in Vietnam and partly because Duolingo (which I was using for Vietnamese) didn’t have a program for Khmer. In retrospect, I should have searchedRead More

Iceland

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

Iceland was a country I’d aspired to visit for some time having read Kaelene’s blog Unlocking Kiki for several years. Visiting in August there was close to 18 hours of daylight per day, but the temperatures in Reykjavik, were similar to those in Wellington in the same month – the difference being that it was Winter in Wellington. I can’t imagine how cold it must be living here in Winter! One thing I will say for Iceland’s tourism industry is that they do tours well. They’re efficient, well organised and regular. Renee and I didn’t really shop around, we just went with Reykjavik Excursions as they operated the airport bus (for a little more you can get dropped to or collected from your hotel rather than the bus station), as well as offering tours to The Blue Lagoon and around The Golden Circle. The Blue Lagoon It cost us about $185NZ for […]

Currently // The aftermath of a multi-month adventure

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

It blows my mind that I have a UK bank account and passport as well as New Zealand ones. I can get off a flight, rock straight through customs, use my Oyster Card on the Tube, walk into a bar in London and pay with a local bank card. I spent my last few days in London in late August wondering why I don’t live there. I cycled along canals on a Boris Bike, walked through parks as people sunbathed and enjoyed picnics, ate at amazing restaurants, and drank outside at pubs with good people. But surely it’s possible to somehow have the best of the travel and home worlds, regardless of how isolated this country is? Because I also love living in Wellington right now. I also start to struggle with the pace of long-term travel, perhaps even becoming anhedonic. I want to be where my friends and family […]

Can an airport lounge membership save you money?

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

It’s a trap that’s easy to fall into: once you’ve experienced what it’s like to have an airport lounge membership it’s very hard to opt out again. After several years of free passes and a gifted membership, last year I found myself without access to Air New Zealand’s Koru Lounge and associated member benefits. Sitting at the gate to wait for your flight without the glam feel and perks a lounge brings suddenly feels a lot less glam. There are generally four ways you can gain access to an airport lounge: Pay for a business-class (or better) ticket Improve your airline status to Gold or higher. This means frequently flying with the same airline rather than purchasing the best fare available Travel with someone who is a member Pay for a membership My Westpac credit card meant no joining fee and a $125 discount on the annual fee for Air New Zealand’s Koru airport […]

10 things to do before you travel internationally

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

Excluding the mandatory essentials of booking flights and accommodation and even if you’re only travelling overseas for a short period of time there are a number of easy to forget items it’s important to cross off before hopping on a plane. Prevent stress by ensuring you’ve considered these 10 things to do before you travel internationally. 1. Check your Passport It seems a no brainer, but the number of stories you hear of people turning up to fly with an expired passport makes this a mandatory item in this list. There needs to be enough space in your passport for new stamps, it can’t be damaged and should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your journey. Make sure you take copies of your passport and carry them with you, and make use of modern technology by either scanning or taking a photo of the relevant pages and store […]

On the road with Wild Kiwi Tours

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

Recently I got to explore the highlights of the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island with Wild Kiwi who offer a number of different small group tours around New Zealand for 18 to 35 year olds. The entire Southern Voyager tour is spent ducking in and out of National Parks (five in total) and visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We spent two nights in Franz Josef, three nights in Queenstown and our final night in Mount Cook National Park where we stayed in clean, tidy and warm hostels with a maximum of four people to a room. Our transport for the week was a pimped out Mercedes tour bus which towed a trailer behind it carrying our luggage. It was comfortable, had both air-conditioning and a heater, WiFi (when the local population was greater than about 15 people) and USB charging ports. The tour gives you a heap of activity choices […]

24 hours in Stockholm, Sweden

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

One of the great things about travelling in Europe is the cheap flights available between the cities there. Renee and I bought some ridiculously cheap flights to spend a weekend in Stockholm in August. We arrived late on a Friday night from Bergen and flew back to London on the Sunday afternoon which basically left us with just 24 hours in Stockholm to explore, but which proved enough time with a planned route and some prioritising. The World Triathlon Championships were taking place in Stockholm the same weekend and with the costs of accommodation high we stayed in a Airbnb in Södermalm. Our 24 hours in Stockholm At 10am on Saturday we loaded up on Bagels and coffee for breakfast at The Bagel in the middle of Södermalm. I went with the ‘New York’ which was the classic Salmon, Cream Cheese and Capers. At 10:40am we set off on foot towards downtown Stockholm […]

Things I learnt when an airline lost my luggage

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

In July I was travelling from Barcelona to Luxembourg when security strikes at Barcelona airport meant we were unable to get through security in time to board our flight. However our checked bags did make the flight and took off without us and were subsequently lost by the airline for four days. This resulted in us having to find an alternative route to Luxembourg with only the clothes on our back and the items in our hand luggage. Just over a month later my luggage again failed to turn up on a luggage carousel, this time in Auckland. Thankfully this time it was located within a few hours in Frankfurt, having missed my connection to Hong Kong 30 hours earlier. I got it back three days later. Here are some of the things I learnt when an airline lost my luggage which will improve your situation if it ever happens to […]

Taking a Scenic Flight over Franz Josef Glacier

by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World

This week I spent two nights in Franz Josef with Wild Kiwi. It’s a small, two street town in New Zealand’s South Island with beautiful mountain views, the continual drone of helicopters, and with the exception of the Kiwi Conservation Centre staff, pretty much everyone has a foreign accent. Mount Cook and Franz Josef glaciers are in the nearby mountains attracting tourists. Both glaciers come down to within 300m of sealevel, are surrounded by rainforest and are rapidly receeding – Franz Josef Glacier has lost about 800m since 2008. With a full day of free time there to explore, what I really wanted to do was get up close to a glacier. Probably the cheapest way to do so is to walk up to a viewpoint for Franz Josef Glacier which takes about 1.5hrs return from a carpark. Lilian and I however took the ‘YOLO’ attitude and decided to see it […]

Out of everywhere I went last year there are some clear winners in my mind as to my favourite places of 2017. 2017 was an epic year of travel for me. I achieved all the plans and dreams I had this time last year, visiting five countries for the first time and quite a number of new cities. Madrid, Spain I’d been to Barcelona before and was surprised when it didn’t blow me away as I’d expected it to. This meant I hit Madrid in July without high expectations and found it to be one of my favourite places. Madrid was sweltering but the rooftop pool at Dear Hotel Madrid was beautifully cool as well as being located in the vicinity of views and cocktails. The breakfast offering was also outstanding and our room probably the biggest Renee and I had while travelling through Europe. The shops were open late, […]
