The ethical evolution of voluntourism

by Brett Seychell @ Social Cycles

As the ‘voluntourism’ industry continues to boom, many question the real impact that short term holiday volunteers have on an international community. Some argue that voluntourism is ultimately about the self-fulfilment of the volunteers, more than what they bring to the communities they ‘help’, with the only real change being their own Facebook profile picture.… Read More

A New Renaissance for FAJO Magazine

by Brittany @ Brittany Gawley

As a historian, I have always been very attracted to England and its past. I had been there a couple of times as a teen and always pictured my adult-self living there. I was instantly infatuated upon arriving in such a wondrous place. It just felt right. In 2008, I decided to pack my bags and relocate to London in order to pursue a teaching degree and Master’s program. My senses were overwhelmed in a pleasant fashion. I was aesthetically pleased at every turn. The lifestyle, the transportation, THE FASHION, the music, the culture, the restaurants, the strolls down Portobello Road, the picnics in the park, the Saturday morning bike rides through historic sites and oh so much more. I would describe life there as textured; it encompassed so many layers and suited me like my favourite sweater: Comfortably. Teaching in England brought fresh challenges including teaching historical content that I had not previously studied in depth. Let’s just say I had to do a lot of research. That’s where the Renaissance and I developed a blooming relationship. The Renaissance period is known for its revival of art, literature and learning across Europe. Think medieval times merging into modern. A time of growth and exploration. Enter Henry VIII and his 6 wives. Rather than exploring distant lands, Henry VIII thought it would be a good idea to explore his options (if you know what I mean). It doesn’t get much more scandalous than this period in British history. A New Renaissance depicts the tale of Henry VIII and his 6 wives using high fashion and alluring architecture. Even the jewelry used shows hints of the Tudor Rose and the ruffled collars of times passed.
