Dewalokam: A Slice of Paradise in India

by Marta @ Ponte Travels

Set on a lazy river, surrounded by jungle, a rubber plantation, bananas, jackfruit, papaya, and a lush spice and herb garden—Dewalokam is an organic farm, and the home of Sinta and Jose in Kerala, India. Schoolteachers by profession who inherited the family property, they built a guesthouse some years ago, and sustainably manage animals, food production, and employ enough staff to support 16 local families. Sinta and the village women who work there welcomed our group of yogis with frangipani leis and applied sandalwood-paste bindis on our foreheads. We were soon made to feel like part of the family—and got to know our hosts and their two great kids over delicious, multi-course meals made with fresh veggies and spices from their garden. Morning yoga on the lawn was followed by breakfasts of home grown eggs, milk, honey, fruit, and more. We all signed up for daily Ayurvedic massage—a four-handed affair, performed by women with strong hands, (the men in our group had men)—who generously applied herb-infused oils. Total bliss. What’s more we swam in the river, were guided through the jungle and rubber plantation, visited the kids’ school and went shopping for Indian cotton prints in a town that sees few tourists. If you’d like to support community-based tourism at it’s finest—join yoga instructors Laura Humpf and Wendy Dion for four wonderful nights at Dewalokam and several other locally owned properties on our Kerala Culture & Wellness itinerary.

What’s your dosha?

by Marta @ Ponte Travels

If you have no idea what a ‘dosha’ is — then you can take a simple quiz or you can have a lot more fun by traveling with us to India, where Ayurveda all started thousands of years ago. ‘Ayur’ which means life, and ‘veda’ which means knowledge, is a holistic health and wellness practice that believes we’re all comprised of one or more ‘doshas’ or energies that relate to our physical characteristics and mental attitudes. I learned that I’m a combination of Vata and Pita and that when my dosha is out of balance, then I’m more likely to get sick. Keeping that balance with guidelines on diet, lifestyle and meditation is what the practice is all about. Many of our favorite hotels and guesthouses in Kerala offer Ayuervedic massage and some have Ayurvedic physicians on staff who direct the treatments offered. Though I’ve never taken the ‘cure’ (a long term stay at an Ayurvedic Resort),  I’ve certainly enjoyed the benefits of herbal-infused oil massages as well as learning about how certain foods and spices are particularly healthy for me. What’s more, Kerala is one of the more beautiful places to enjoy an Ayurvedic massage and practice its sister science of yoga. It’s India’s most prosperous state – with beautiful white sand beaches, a lush tropical landscape, tea and spice plantations in the highlands and backwater cruising along the coast. Our upcoming Kerala Culture & Wellness tour will take you there.

Check, Please! | WTTW

The latest film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, The Vietnam War, premieres on WTTW11 and wttw.com on Sunday, September 17. Perhaps it’s an appropriate time for a look at Vietnamese cuisine, which is a distinctly aromatic combination of disparate flavors and textures designed to engage all five senses. It is a compendium of culinary contrasts: sweet and sour, mild and spicy, cold and hot – a true example, if you will, of yin and yang. If your idea of good eating is a little bit of everything (with a generous amount of fish sauce!), you should definitely give this cuisine a try.

On the path in Sri Lanka

by Marta @ Ponte Travels

Leaving behind the cold and dark winter days of January, our intrepid group was welcomed as honored guests at Colombo’s international airport. Garlands of flowers were placed around our necks—followed by the warm embrace of moist tropical air as we stepped outside. Lush greenery punctuated with a riot of flowers, surrounded the our seaside hotel with views of the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka is a stunningly beautiful island with varied eco-systems of tropical rainforest, wooded highland plateaus and lush mountains in the interior. Riches of dazzling gemstones and spices have drawn traders and adventurers for centuries. But there is so much more— large herds of elephants and other wildlife, bird life, tea plantations, and inland reservoirs called ‘tanks’ that were constructed centuries ago by Sinhalese kings so that the population would have the means to irrigate crops—a system that still supports the food supply today. Their cultural heritage of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, at times overlap in a panoply of deities, monuments and belief systems that we later found in the fascinating holy precinct in the southeastern pilgrimage city of Kataragama. There is even a temple dedicated to the god of chickens, complete with chickens nesting in the nearby tree. The Pope had just visited, and there had been a recent election where the former president (assured of victory by his astrologer), was peacefully replaced by one of his cabinet members. There was a palpable excitement in the air of good things coming. The Buddha also visited Sri Lanka—three times—dating back 2,500 years—and as a result, temple complexes, and dagobas (solid domed structures) were built and the island became what is today the world’s oldest, Theravada Buddhist country. For those of us with an interest in Buddhism, it was especially meaningful that many of the World Heritage Sites such as Anuradhapura, the Cave Temples of Dambulla and the Royal Palace at Kandy are still today places of pilgrimage where all are welcome to visit and lay floral offerings. A couple of us even climbed 8,000-foot-high Sri Pada (also known as Adam’s Peak), leaving our guesthouse shortly after midnight to greet the dawn, and see where the Buddha’s footprint, (or Adam’s depending on your belief), is impressed in stone. Alas, the beautiful sunrise was hidden behind clouds, and the Buddha’s footprint obscured by crowds, but it left me without regrets, only a re-enforcement that travel, like life, is never exactly what you expect, and to enjoy it fully is to embrace and be at peace with whatever happens. Sri Lanka is a lovely country where there are surprises and pleasures around every corner. Receiving blessings from a monk in an island monastery, finding baby turtles on the beach at sunset, […]
