Ashok Ferrey: My Sri Lanka

by @ Welcome to Ampersand's travel blog

By Cosmo Brockway

Sri Lanka is an island of artists and letters and one of its most celebrated contemporary authors is Colombo-based Ashok Ferrey. His recent novel, The Ceaseless Chatter of Demons, wittily and irreverently portrays the Sri Lankan society in which Ferrey grew up and rebelled against in youth. Educated in Sussex and Christ Church, Oxford, Ferrey has led a colourful life, converting Victorian villas in 1980's 'front line' Brixton and now settled with his wife and two children in a sprawling colonial house in Colombo. He is also a guest lecturer at the Colombo School of Architecture. Here he shares some of his thoughts on the country that he places at the heart of his work and remains fascinated by.

You speak of your unconventional background, what was it like growing up in Sri Lanka?
I lived in Sri Lanka till I was eight, after which my father took us off to Somalia in East Africa. Colombo was a then a town of whitewashed colonial villas and magnificent flowering trees; but there were no pavements and the jungle was never very far away. You left a piece of land for six months and it was a forest when you came back and houses had actual trees growing out of the brickwork. In contrast, Mogadishu (the capital of Somalia) was a proper city, with palm-lined piazzas and pavements, and even triumphal arches (celebrating Mussolini, no doubt). How the fortunes of these two towns have reversed in the intervening half century!

What is unique about Sri Lanka?
This is a country that never ceases to amaze. Just when you think you have it all figured out it manages to wrong-foot you. Normal rules simply don’t apply: for instance, we Sri Lankans are simply not motivated by money, a fact which many other South Asian countries (and much of the West) fail to understand. Having lived on three continents I can confidently say that this is easily the most complex country in the world.

You write movingly and lyrically about local life. Is there a particular place that inspires you?
Sigiriya Rock. To build a palace (or monastery – there are conflicting theories about this!) on top of a 660-feet-high rock with near-vertical ascent is astounding. Who would be mad enough or foolish enough? Just think of the bricks they must have had to carry up! And then to paint the whole thing with the most sublime frescoes of half-naked ladies . . . Though come to think of it, I wonder how archaeologists subscribing to the monastery theory manage to explain the naked ladies . . .

Being a guest lecturer at the Colombo School of Architecture and host of the programme ‘Art and Architecture with Ashok’, design is obviously a passion of yours....where in Sri Lanka have you found some beautiful examples of local design to visit?
Sri Lanka was possibly the most colonized country on earth – for nearly half a millennium. There was much good that the colonial invaders brought. But sadly, the high art that we were famed for throughout our long history (frescoes and medieval bronzes, sculptures in granite and the most intricate wooden roof architecture) all vanished owing to lack of patronage. What we have now instead is a very vibrant folk art: the designs on woven rush mats, the filigree-work on silver, the almost embarrassingly magnificent settings of precious stones, all of which we have in abundance. On top of this, Sri Lanka produced the first school of modern art in Asia (the 43 Group) and the first female moderne architect (Minette de Silva); and of course the inimitable Geoffrey Bawa who inspired a whole generation of young architects with ‘tropical modernism.’ As for works by the 43 group, they are mostly in museums, but if you ever come across one for sale - buy it immediately! Examples are now finding their way to Sotheby’s and Christies and selling for six-figure sums. Though be warned, there are many fakes floating around!

Where would you send a traveller to experience an unforgettable day on the island?
This is a difficult question to answer because though distances are small, travelling can be time-consuming. A day in Galle Fort (the best preserved colonial fort in Asia) and then ending up on a southern beach would be hugely enjoyable. Then again, a trip to Sigiriya Rock and the frescoes of Dambulla is hard to beat (though the travel might kill you!). Or if you are really tough, a day trip to Kandy. The road is murder (they are currently building a motorway), but the train journey though a bit of a bone-shaker is spectacular. I think the railroad to Kandy was the best thing the British ever did for this country!

Do you have a new book in the pipeline and can you share any details?!
I have a humorous non-fiction book,Cut Pieces, coming out early next year. A set of funny articles that attempts to come to grips with the notoriously slippery Sri Lankan psyche! At the same time, my most recent book The Ceaseless Chatter of Demons is coming out in French. This is the first time in 50 years that a Sri Lankan novel by a local writer has been translated and published in France, so I am very proud of it.

Perfect for Indophiles who feel like they’ve seen it all before, this will be a very special trip, introducing guests to India’s key movers and shakers who will offer a rare insight into her past, present and future.

This unusual journey, filled with extraordinary private access experiences, is only possible with Ampersand and Cosmo's contacts. It would be unrealistically expensive if it were to be arranged for a couple travelling alone. We consider this a group tour for people who would not ordinarily consider travelling with others. You will join forces with like-minded Ampersand clients, who are accustomed to the very best, to explore India under the chaperone of our charming guide and friend, Cosmo Samuel Brockway. A writer, South Asia specialist and all-round social maestro, Cosmo has lived in India for 20 years and has a deep understanding of its culture and arts. He will undoubtedly educate as well as entertain everyone on this trip!

Industry and Trade Minister on working trip to US

by nam @ Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States

(VNA) Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang chaired over a conference on investment opportunities in Vietnam on September 15 in Washington.

At the conference, Minister Hoang highlighted Vietnam's policies and priorities to attract foreign investment in energy and finance areas. He also witnessed the signing of minutes of understanding on cooperation between PetroVietnam and McKinsey&Company.

The same day, the Vietnamese minister had a working session with Fred P. Hochberg, Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (US Exim Bank). They discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Vietnam 's Ministry of Industry and Trade and US Exim Bank for bilateral cooperation in industry and trade, thus increasing economic and commercial exchanges between the two countries.

Minister Hoang also toured Honeywell and Tangible companies which operate in aviation and space technology, automation solutions, transport, special materials, and energy and security.

Earlier, on Sept. 13, the minister attended the Joint Transportation and Energy Ministerial Conference held by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in San Francisco.

Addressing the public-private roundtable on developing energy-efficient transport systems for livable low-carbon communities, Minister Hoang said to establish energy efficient, low-carbon transportation systems, Vietnam needs to overcome many challenges such as lacking experiences, proper technologies, expertise and financing. He expressed the hope to cooperate with other APEC member economies in terms of experiences and information exchange, assistance in technology transfer, human resource development, and technical and financial support.

Also at the joint conference, on behalf of the Vietnamese delegation, Permanent Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication Ngo Thinh Duc addressed the public-private roundtable on greening the supply chain, energy-efficient freight transportation. He called upon international investors and organisations to invest in infratructure and to transfer technologies for developing supply chains during socio-economic development in Vietnam.

Following the first-ever joint Transportation and Energy Ministerial Conference hosted by US Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, energy and transportation ministers from 21 Asia-Pacific economies promised to make transportation cleaner and more energy efficient./.

VN, US hold second defense policy dialogue

by Anonymous @ Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States

(VNA)The second Vietnam-US defence policy dialogue took place in Washington on Sept. 19 under the co-chair of Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence Robert Scher.

At the dialogue, the two sides expressed satisfaction at the outcomes of bilateral defence cooperation over the recent past.

Both Vinh and Scher agreed on the need to make the Vietnam-US defence cooperation more practical in the interest of each country and for peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.

Lt. Gen. Vinh informed the US side about the results of the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam early this year while the US side announced its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

On this occasion, Lt. Gen. Vinh and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence Robert Scher signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on promoting cooperation between the two defence ministries which focuses on five priority fields in the immediate future.

They include the establishment of a regular high-ranking dialogue mechanism between the US Department of Defence and the Vietnamese Defence Ministry, sea security, search and rescue, studying and exchanging experience in the United Nations peace keeping activities, and humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Lt. Gen. Vinh and the Vietnamese delegation also met with a number of US congressmen and leaders of the US Departments of States and Defence./.

Merry Christmas

by @ Welcome to Ampersand's travel blog

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here once more, and with the festive season fully upon us we’re already saying Merry Christmas when leaving shops and restaurants. We’ve even given our Christmas greetings to friends and colleagues who we won’t be seeing again until the New Year.

The origin of the greeting ‘Merry Christmas’ is believed to date back as far as the 16th Century when an English admiral coined the term in an informal letter. The message also appeared in the popular 16th century Christmas carol, ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas.’  The festive message positioned itself as a mainstay in our festive traditions in 1843 when it was used by Charles Dickens in his classic tale, A Christmas Carol and appeared on the first ever formal Christmas card.

Since then it has become a greeting which we all say countless times each year, and has spanned numerous other variations within the English speaking world alone, from Happy Christmas to Seasons Greetings.

The seasonal wish is a globally recognised message for spreading Christmas cheer, but of course each country has their own variation of how to say it.

So we’ve asked people from around the world to send us their festive greetings showing us how to say Merry Christmas in over 20 different languages from around the world.

Have a look at our video below to find out how to say Merry Christmas in 26 different languages and continue spreading the Christmas wishes. If you want to add an extra language into the mix we’d love to hear it or see it on Facebook!
