Experiencing a Whale Watching Tour in Sydney
by Sarah Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Tue Nov 03 00:33:32 PST 2015
One of my most memorable experiences during our travels has been whale watching. To see these enormous creatures launch majestically into the water is incredible. So when I was up to Sydney for work, I couldn’t wait to catch the last of the humpback whale season with Oz Whale Watching tours. Gathered at King St Wharf 9 at 8am, we were a group of about 20 people with cameras eager to catch a glimpse of a whale or two. Once on board we headed out through the Harbour guided by our host Biggles. Sydney of course put on perfect weather for our outing which enabled us to soak up many of her sights including Luna Park, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Luna Park on the harbour’s edge The impressive Sydney Opera house best seen from the water Biggles’ voice could be heard in the background as we cruised towards the heads, sharing a bit of history of Sydney and about the whales themselves. During this time of year the humpback whales are making their way south, and sightings of mothers with their newborn calves can be had. This leg of their journey is a little slower than usual so [...]

LIVE LIKE A LOCAL: RENT A SHORT-TERM APARTMENT WHILE TRAVELING
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Jun 05 11:30:18 PDT 2014
If you want to experience the true life of a place, experience it like a local: get an apartment in a true neighborhood. Wake up to the sounds of street vendors and garbage trucks. Be recognized with a smile by your local noodle-slinger.
If a city strikes your fancy, rent an apartment for a month and stick around for awhile.

Check the New York City craigslist sublet page and you’ll find plenty of Parisians happy to exchange their Left Bank apartment for a little temporary stepping stone on the Upper West Side. Though apartment exchanges are rare in Asia, there are plenty of expats and locals alike who will be vacating their adobe and happy to have someone trustworthy in ... Read More »

I’ll watch almost any kind of movie, and even if it’s rubbish, find something to enjoy about it. Being inspired to travel by watching amazing travel movies is one of life’s great pleasures. Here is a list of my 13 favourite travel movies of all time. Apart from the common travel theme running through them all, they all have other concepts and ideas that conjures up an incredible sense of wanderlust whenever I watch them. The idea that it’s never too late to travel, it will change your life immeasurably, you’ll meet amazing people along the way, and that we should use every day we have to live life to the fullest, are so powerful they inspired me to sell everything I owned and set off on a nomadic adventure with my wife and son. 10 awesome things to do in Melbourne

Mon Jan 25 22:08:18 PST 2016
There are so many things to do in Melbourne it would literally take days to write a single article. So instead I’m going to choose 10 of the best that I believe you should do if you ever visit my home town. Melbourne has now won ‘The World’s Most Liveable City’ award, presented annually by The Economist, five years in a row. That’s an incredible achievement by anyone’s standards, but it’s easy to see why. No matter what you’re into there’s something for you to do, like dining in first-class restaurants, attending a wide range of sporting events in world-class stadiums, taking in a play or musical in gorgeous theatres, or experiencing masterpieces in our amazing arts precinct. There is of course just one problem with Melbourne, it’s expensive. There’s no escaping it, you’ll need a little money in your pocket to fully appreciate this city. But by using services like Couchsurfing, the free inner city trams, and free events that can be found at That’s Melbourne, you can definitely have a great time without breaking the bank. You could also do a free walking tour when you first arrive so you can work out where everything is and get [...]

Work and travel? 10 pros and cons of freelancing on the road
by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Sat Dec 19 14:25:08 PST 2015
While Sarah and I managed to accumulate a small pile of cash from selling everything we owned before leaving on our nomadic adventure, we knew we were going to have to work and travel if we wanted to do this for the long haul. Not only did we need to cover our travel expenses, but we also had two mortgages to service, and the rental income didn’t cover the repayments. When we got to Thailand, about five weeks into our trip, I managed to get a job teaching English in Chiang Mai. It was only 16 hours a week which gave me plenty of time to explore the area, but the pay was ordinary by Australian standards at $US9 per hour. That meant while I made enough to enjoy living in northern Thailand, it didn’t even come close to covering the mortgage repayments back home. It was during our two month stay in Chiang Mai that Sarah started working online as a freelance writer. She signed up to a couple of freelancing websites and began applying for writing jobs. Despite having no experience as a writer, in no time at all she managed to acquire several clients via Upwork. Initially [...]

As delicious and universally appealing as Korean barbecue is, I've learned that there's so much more to the cuisine than just bulgogi and galbi. Things like ganjang gejang, jokbal, and naengmyeonaren't as well known outside of Korea but they are dishes well worth flying for.

15 freelancer jobs to make money on the road
by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Mon Dec 28 13:26:31 PST 2015
Being a freelancer is a recent phenomenon from a mass scale point of view. Once upon a time work and travel were mutually exclusive pastimes for almost everyone. You either worked or you travelled, but 99% of us really couldn’t do both. Of course back when I first travelled overseas I worked as a primary school teacher in London for two years, but that was different. I couldn’t just get up and live somewhere else one day just because I felt like it. I was living in London, in a bricks and mortar building I had to go to Monday to Friday, earning money by teaching little English kids how to read and write. Today things are much, much different. The freelancer community is exploding and the amount of people either leaving their jobs to freelance online, or negotiating with their employer to work from home or on their travels, is in the tens of millions worldwide. For many it doesn’t matter whether you’re in your home office or on a beach in the Bahamas, as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection you can do the exact same job to the exact same standards. Without any qualifications, [...]

There’s no escaping the passion for sport in Melbourne
by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Mon Mar 07 21:43:23 PST 2016
The level of passion the locals have for sport in Melbourne is insane. Read the two major newspapers, listen to any talk back radio, or turn on the TV at pretty much any stage across the weekend, and chances are sport will be front and centre. I love my sport, I worked in professional sport in Melbourne for nine years, and even I get sick of the coverage. If there’s such as a thing as sports poisoning, then almost every Melbournian has a severe dose 12 months a year! If you’re a visitor to Melbourne with an interest in sport, you’ve come to the right place. At any time of the year you can check out some sporting event featuring the world’s best going at it. The number of world-class athletes who call Melbourne home and ply their trade here, plus the world-class athletes who visit with their clubs or for major sporting events is mind-boggling. So to try and cut through the clutter and confusion for you, here’s a comprehensive guide to sport in Melbourne. ‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu May 01 04:30:42 PDT 2014
“a place around the bend where he could jump off”
Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?
A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

Melbourne is defined by its suburbs, and almost every suburb has it’s own shopping precinct. Shopping in Melbourne is like a sport all of its own, to go with the myriad sporting options every visitor to Melbourne should check out. Melburnians are no shrinking violets when it comes to fashion, with many of the country’s trends starting right here in Australia’s fashion capital. However, with so many options, from the biggest chain retailers to the smallest chic boutiques, from enormous shopping malls to suburban shopping strips, it can be overwhelming to know where to go to get what your looking for. To make your shopping experience a little less intimidating, here is a selection of the biggest, best and most popular Melbourne shopping precincts for you to check out during your visit. Bourke Street Mall, CBD Shopping in Melbourne, Bourke Street Mall (Source: Flickr/avlxyz) If you’re visiting Melbourne you’ll probably spend some time in the city centre, so why not start your shopping in the Bourke Street Mall. SIEM REAP’S 10 BEST BARS: CLASSY, HIDDEN DIVES JUST OUTSIDE OF ANGKOR
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Tue May 06 11:55:14 PDT 2014
Every year I find myself in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a week. It’s inevitable, and always enjoyable.
Angkor Wat is, along with Bagan in Myanmar, one of the two most spectacular temple sites in Asia, if not the world. I’ve come back again and again with friends, or by myself. Although lately I barely spend time in the temples of Angkor Wat, I love the cafe and bar scene of nearby Siem Reap, a charming little French colonial town adjacent to Angkor that now serves as the tourist-amenity center of the region. Though a tourist town, it’s far from a tourist trap. There is something about the clear blue sky, slow clouds and that long twilight that I love here. And, there’s the drinks.
Pub Street is famous here. It is the center of Siem Reap and the fulcrum of activity in ... Read More »

Vietnam Visa On Arrival – everything you need to know
by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Mon Jan 04 03:09:35 PST 2016
The whole idea of a Vietnam Visa On Arrival approval letter seems a little strange to me. Having to apply and send money to a website you don’t know is legit, to get emailed an approval letter that must be presented at your arrival airports Visa On Arrival office (with more money) before you get your visa is a real leap of faith, especially for the inexperienced traveller. Given Vietnam was the first country we went to when we left Australia, we were about as inexperienced as you can get. But this is the process we went through and it worked out perfectly. What is a Vietnam Visa On Arrival As the name suggests, a Vietnam Visa On Arrival is simply when you’re issued with your visa when you arrive by plane, as opposed to organising it before you leave your country. You can go through your local Vietnamese embassy to ensure you have a visa before you leave your country if you prefer, but it’s more expensive, you’ll need to send your passport away and it takes more time. The bonus is you can just walk through customs on arrival without having to head to the Visa On Arrival office, [...]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN VIETNAM - The Hungry Suitcase
The Hungry Suitcase
Thailand enjoys a 50% return rate for foreign tourists. In contrast, Vietnam only pulls back 5% of visitors.Personally, I feel that Vietnam walks all over Thailand in almost every travel category except beaches. So, why do so many people have such bad experiences and never return to Vietnam?I hope the list I have made below helps out first-time visitors. It may seem cynical and anti-Vietnamese. It’s not. I love this country; I want you to love it, too. I’d just like to alert travelers to beware of the common first-time mistakes that may sour their experience of the local people and the country overall.Do your homework, know what to expect, and this is the most rewarding country in Southeast Asia to explore. Here goes:-1-TAKE YOUR VISA SERIOUSLY, VERY SERIOUSLY INDEEDYes, it seems like common sense, but I have seen tourists turned ... The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches
by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples
Fri Dec 22 14:27:24 PST 2017
The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches. The sand is a brilliant white and the water a magnificent crystal-clear blue that you usually see on travel brochures and postcards. The big grey rocks with splashes of bright orange act as the beach’s bookends, while the native bushland that often lines the beach’s edge remains virtually untouched. The beaches are not tropical. Instead they are rugged, wild and sometimes isolated. And despite the Great Eastern Drive from Orford in the south to St Helens in the north being famous the world over for its spectacular coastal views, you’ll often have the beach to yourself if you choose to stop for a swim or a walk. Anywhere else on Earth, and a coastline like this would be a magnet for hotel chains, global tourist operators and real estate developers. But for some reason Tasmania’s east coast remains a quiet, charming and relatively undiscovered corner of the world lined with quaint little towns and spectacular national parks. We spent five days exploring the east coast from our rental home in Four Mile Creek, a town consistently of exactly four streets, a children’s playground and a cricket ground. Our balcony overlooked [...]

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local
by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Jun 18 10:31:49 PDT 2015
Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.
Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

10 THINGS I CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Recently I’ve taken a four-month break off of travel to settle into a comfortable life in a quiet town. It’s been nice, mostly.
I do miss packing and unpacking the bags. I miss tossing away ripped up socks, giving away paperback books, and moving what’s left of my big shampoo into a small little shampoo thingy.
Some things are essential to have packed and ready to grab when I’m on the road. I will not include the obvious things like a camera, computer, passport, etc. These following are the little home run hitters that are easy to forget about, but always needed:
1. DENTAL FLOSS

Thu Dec 28 03:00:49 PST 2017
It was love at first sight. I pretty much fell in love with Ireland the moment I saw her. She seduced me with rolling, emerald, sheep-dotted hills and plains of gray-green stone. She stirred my wild side with reckless winds tearing across rocky cliffs, and underneath her incredible expanse of sky, she stole my heart. […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Sun Oct 22 16:37:56 PDT 2017
Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.
Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Apr 24 12:18:24 PDT 2014
In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?
Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »
