Move Over Las Vegas; Here are 3 Reasons Why Tourists Prefer Macau

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Thanks to appearances in countless Hollywood movies, Las Vegas has been widely regarded as the gambling capital of the world, with the bright lights of Sin City drawing visitors from around the globe for many decades.

However, the famous Nevada city can no longer claim to be the king of casino culture, and, in truth, hasn’t been for just over a decade now.

Rising to park itself firmly on that particular throne is Macau, which has transformed itself remarkably from what was once a sleepy fishing port to a booming Asian tourist destination at the top of many ‘must visit’ lists. Move over Las Vegas, because Macau is where the action is!

10 awesome things to do in Melbourne

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

There are so many things to do in Melbourne it would literally take days to write a single article. So instead I’m going to choose 10 of the best that I believe you should do if you ever visit my home town. Melbourne has now won ‘The World’s Most Liveable City’ award, presented annually by The Economist, five years in a row. That’s an incredible achievement by anyone’s standards, but it’s easy to see why. No matter what you’re into there’s something for you to do, like dining in first-class restaurants, attending a wide range of sporting events in world-class stadiums, taking in a play or musical in gorgeous theatres, or experiencing masterpieces in our amazing arts precinct. There is of course just one problem with Melbourne, it’s expensive. There’s no escaping it, you’ll need a little money in your pocket to fully appreciate this city. But by using services like Couchsurfing, the free inner city trams, and free events that can be found at That’s Melbourne, you can definitely have a great time without breaking the bank. You could also do a free walking tour when you first arrive so you can work out where everything is and get [...]

The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches. The sand is a brilliant white and the water a magnificent crystal-clear blue that you usually see on travel brochures and postcards. The big grey rocks with splashes of bright orange act as the beach’s bookends, while the native bushland that often lines the beach’s edge remains virtually untouched. The beaches are not tropical. Instead they are rugged, wild and sometimes isolated. And despite the Great Eastern Drive from Orford in the south to St Helens in the north being famous the world over for its spectacular coastal views, you’ll often have the beach to yourself if you choose to stop for a swim or a walk. Anywhere else on Earth, and a coastline like this would be a magnet for hotel chains, global tourist operators and real estate developers. But for some reason Tasmania’s east coast remains a quiet, charming and relatively undiscovered corner of the world lined with quaint little towns and spectacular national parks. We spent five days exploring the east coast from our rental home in Four Mile Creek, a town consistently of exactly four streets, a children’s playground and a cricket ground. Our balcony overlooked [...]

Vietnam Visa On Arrival – everything you need to know

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

The whole idea of a Vietnam Visa On Arrival approval letter seems a little strange to me. Having to apply and send money to a website you don’t know is legit, to get emailed an approval letter that must be presented at your arrival airports Visa On Arrival office (with more money) before you get your visa is a real leap of faith, especially for the inexperienced traveller. Given Vietnam was the first country we went to when we left Australia, we were about as inexperienced as you can get. But this is the process we went through and it worked out perfectly. What is a Vietnam Visa On Arrival As the name suggests, a Vietnam Visa On Arrival is simply when you’re issued with your visa when you arrive by plane, as opposed to organising it before you leave your country. You can go through your local Vietnamese embassy to ensure you have a visa before you leave your country if you prefer, but it’s more expensive, you’ll need to send your passport away and it takes more time. The bonus is you can just walk through customs on arrival without having to head to the Visa On Arrival office, [...]

Yes, Munich is home to Oktoberfest, offers tours to Neuschwanstein Castle, has the BMW Museum, and numerous beer gardens, and it's for these attractions the city is most famously known.

But what if you are looking for something new and exciting to do in Munich. This Bavarian city offers many secret activities and adventures that are sure to add some excitement to your next German holiday, and some will most definitely push you outside of your comfort zone!

So once you’re tired of listening to the sounds of a glockenspiel and are done playing dress-up with lederhosen and dirndls, why not try these adventures on for size. Put down that bratwurst or schnitzel, book a Munich taxi, and head to one of these quirky off the beaten path attractions.

An Unintended Trip to Sula Vineyards: Discovering India’s Napa Valley in Nasik

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

A 3 to 4 hour drive from Mumbai, Sula Vineyards is the oldest winery in India. It is a fabulous way to unwind from the hectic bustle of city life, where you can discover the place where Indians first experienced wine.

In 1996, Rajeev Samant planted the first wine grapes in Nashik and today this region is India’s premier wine-growing region, producing 80% of the country’s total wine.

Spread over a total of over 3000 acres, Sula’s vineyards are home to some of India’s finest grapes, so if you’re looking for a place for your next wine tour, you should visit Nashik, in Maharashtra state.

This is India’s Napa Valley; after Sula Vineyards was established in 1999, 35 other wineries followed suit in the region over the next decade. It’s quite incredible how one man paved the way for the emergence of India’s Wine Capital.

7 Things To Know Before Travelling by Overnight Train in Vietnam - Mapping Megan

Mapping Megan

As many a traveler will tell you, taking an overnight train in Asia is quite an adventure, one that I have always found to be enjoyable and something to look forward to.Overnight trains are my favorite means of covering long distances because they're usually friendlier to my budget and more comfortable than taking long road trips being cramped in a small car or bus.The other advantage is that you get to stretch your legs out and get a good night’s sleep in exchange for just a little bit more than you would pay for a hostel or budget hotel.

Unlike Upper Manhattan, Lower Manhattan, also known as the Downtown, offers a dramatic contrast between the new and the old. The experiences you will get there span from the 17th century, and the best way to savor every moment is by using a bus tour service.

Basically, there are so many things to do and see in Lower Manhattan, and what tour you choose depends on the time you have to spend in the area. Keep in mind that Manhattan is the mother of New York City, thanks to the contribution of the Dutch and the British.

Things You Should Consider as a Responsible Traveler / EcoTourist in 2018

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

We’ve all seen the obnoxious tourists waddling out of Subway in some beautiful, ancestral city. Chances are, if you catch us on the right day, we’ve all been that tourist.

There is, however, a revolution in tourism that is really starting to take off. A whole new way of thinking which prioritizes responsible travel, and considers the impact we have on the communities and environments we visit abroad.

The negative impacts of tourism are usually pretty clear to the traveler feeling particularly perceptive. But ecotourism is the belief that travel should be ultimately beneficial to both the tourist and the host country.

There is a balance we should all try to find while traveling: remain safe but also truly experience the local scene. Make ripples, but not a splash. Take only memories, leave only footprints. The following are four key things to consider for those looking to travel responsibly in 2018.

Where to Lose and … Find Yourself in Greek Mykonos

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

The Aegean Sea has been characterized by many as the heart of the Mediterranean and has been commonly linked to colorful mythology, tales of pirates and fishermen, and, in recent years, as the hot-spot of cosmopolitan summer party life for island-hoppers.

Among the family of the Aegean islands however, stands one in particular which is perhaps its most precious jewel: Mykonos beams effervescently due west and it’s certainly not shy at showing it.

Being the favourite destination of vacationists worldwide, Mykonos has become synonymous to beautiful, luxurious and vibrant vacations. But Mykonos is so much more than what the eye meets: it’s actually the ideal place where you can lose yourself on its surface and also find it in its depth.

Experiencing a Whale Watching Tour in Sydney

by Sarah Appleford @ Travelling Apples

One of my most memorable experiences during our travels has been whale watching.  To see these enormous creatures launch majestically into the water is incredible.  So when I was up to Sydney for work, I couldn’t wait to catch the last of the humpback whale season with Oz Whale Watching tours. Gathered at King St Wharf 9 at 8am, we were a group of about 20 people with cameras eager to catch a glimpse of a whale or two.  Once on board we headed out through the Harbour guided by our host Biggles.  Sydney of course put on perfect weather for our outing which enabled us to soak up many of her sights including Luna Park, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Luna Park on the harbour’s edge The impressive Sydney Opera house best seen from the water Biggles’ voice could be heard in the background as we cruised towards the heads, sharing a bit of history of Sydney and about the whales themselves. During this time of year the humpback whales are making their way south, and sightings of mothers with their newborn calves can be had. This leg of their journey is a little slower than usual so [...]

An Overview of Different Travel Bags: Why it’s so Important to Choose the Right Bag for Your Trip

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

I’m sure every traveler at some stage has found themselves in the situation where they’re stuck traveling with the wrong kind of bag.

Whether it’s trying to lug a suitcase through the jungle and beating the crap out of your wheels (been there), or throwing everything into a hiking pack for a stay at a luxury hotel, a travel experience is often about choosing the right kind of bag.

And there are many different types of bags, which will be suitable for different types of trips. So don’t fall into the trap of thinking any bag will do, because you just need something which will transport your things.

Bags are not sacks. They are not meant to be used as sacks. Bags are painstakingly blueprinted to strike a perfect balance between design and utility, for specific types of trips.

So to avoid committing ‘bags faux pas’, consider the following types of bags, and which will be most suitable for your upcoming trip.

Sapa is home to various families of flowers of captivating colours, which can be found nowhere else in the country. When Tet, the Lunar New Year Festival, comes, the whole township of Sapa is filled with the pink colour of peach blossom brought from the vast forests of peach just outside the town. Why Sri Lanka Inspires for a Second Trip

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Since I started travelling four years ago, I have been lucky enough to experience truly varied cultures and places, many of which I hold dear. Sri Lanka, however, has always had a special place in my heart and I’ve made it my mission to convince everyone else of its merits.

Despite a troubled past, Sri Lanka and its people are well on their way to a full recovery. More than that, they are very welcoming to people who wish to experience the beauty of their country and perhaps contribute a bit to stimulating the local economy.

I had such a great experience in Sri Lanka that I even decided to start my own blog about the country and inspire as many people as possible to visit! You can find the blog at takemetosrilanka.com.

With friendly people, incredible food, and stunning locations throughout the country, there are plenty of reasons to choose Sri Lanka as your holiday destination. You’ll love Sri Lanka for the following reasons, and it’s for these reasons that the country will inspire a second trip!

Four Places Worth Visiting in Santorini

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

As your ferry approaches the port of Santorini and you watch the island getting closer and closer, it’s easy to believe that you’re sailing into the view of one of Alfred Sislay’s idyllic paintings.

On the southernmost border of the Aegean archipelago, Santorini is not only considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, but one of the most stunning in the world.

Once you set foot on the island, Santorini will take you on a trip into its past: it’s here you’ll come face to face with the ancient Minoan civilization and the magnificent frescoes it left behind, the grand and fearsome eruption of its volcano and the huge caldera that’s still marveled at by thousands of tourists each year, and of course, its beautiful re-birth as one of the most picturesque places of this Earth.

These are the four top places to visit while you’re there.

Dear Female Travelers: Reasons Knixwear Is the Greatest Travel Underwear You’ll Ever Own!

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Forget your passport, when it comes to travel, appropriate underwear is one of the most essential things. (Don’t actually forget your passport, but I’m sure you get what I meant!)

But traditional cotton underwear isn’t always the best option for travel – they’re slow drying and they absorb moisture meaning cotton isn’t the most comfortable or hygienic thing to wear for extended periods of time.

Underwear might be one of those things you don’t think twice about, but purchasing a pair for the practicalities of travel can make or break a trip. There are plenty of options out there for travel-specific underwear, but when it comes to being specifically designed for women, Knixwear is a Canadian based brand you should know.

The following are seven reasons why Knixwear is the greatest travel underwear you’ll own. But the biggest reason? The amount of confidence you gain from wearing them, for all the reasons below.

Work and travel? 10 pros and cons of freelancing on the road

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

While Sarah and I managed to accumulate a small pile of cash from selling everything we owned before leaving on our nomadic adventure, we knew we were going to have to work and travel if we wanted to do this for the long haul. Not only did we need to cover our travel expenses, but we also had two mortgages to service, and the rental income didn’t cover the repayments. When we got to Thailand, about five weeks into our trip, I managed to get a job teaching English in Chiang Mai. It was only 16 hours a week which gave me plenty of time to explore the area, but the pay was ordinary by Australian standards at $US9 per hour. That meant while I made enough to enjoy living in northern Thailand, it didn’t even come close to covering the mortgage repayments back home. It was during our two month stay in Chiang Mai that Sarah started working online as a freelance writer. She signed up to a couple of freelancing websites and began applying for writing jobs. Despite having no experience as a writer, in no time at all she managed to acquire several clients via Upwork. Initially [...]
