What drives stock price volatility and how can I profit?

by noreply@blogger.com (SGYI) @ SG Young Investment

The Singapore Stock Exchange (SG) has been in a downswing lately and has also seen some volatility. This doesn’t mean there is a lack of profitable opportunities for investors – it simply means that they need to understand how to anticipate and profit from stock volatility.

That entails gaining an understanding of what is driving prices, so that the investor has an insight into why a stock’s price is rising or falling.

Financial results always causes volatility

One of the key drivers of volatility in a company’s stock is when the company reports its financial results. Some companies report quarterly, others half-yearly or annually. Companies often have surprises in the reported figures – both on the upside and the downside.

All stock exchanges and internet forums generate a lot of discussions and speculations, so before the actual results are announced, prices often move sharply, in reaction to the latest rumour about what the results will show.

Surprisingly, the volatility sometimes continues for a few days after the results are out – this is largely due to portfolio managers adjusting holdings, given the numbers that have actually been reported.

And of course, the market often overreacts, so that a swing in one direction or another is followed a few days later by a swing back in the other direction. Observant investors who are following key Singapore Exchange stocks, can develop a feel for when to buy and sell, to take advantage of this volatility.

August 2017 Financial Results

Property companies are definitely doing well, in fact six out of the ten best performing stocks this year, are real estate stocks. After the government relaxed some development restrictions, analyst are forecasting a continuing rise in real estate stock prices. UOL Group, City Developments and others are leading the charge.

In the August results reporting, one of the stocks that saw price swings around the reporting dates was Singapore Airlines which had a moderate 5.6% year-on-year growth in revenue in the passenger business but strong results from the cargo unit.

However, this was put in the shade by the Hotel Properties limited (HPL) result – the company reported profits up 23%. And after a 77% rise in profits in Q1, Capitaland, Singapore’s largest property developer, followed it up with a doubling of operating profits in Q2.

Analysts reports are worth reading

It’s well worth reading the analysts’ comments on these companies when they report. There is often background information that can help you understand whether the result is caused by special accounting measures or unusual trading conditions, or whether the company’s performance is likely to be sustained. These two different scenarios are vital for knowing whether the share price is going to be underpinned and steady, or very volatile. Market expectations that a company will constantly outperform are difficult to meet, and disappointment from investors at a missed target can result in the share price dropping.

As a private investor, you can take advantage of these volatility using a spread trading account that allows you to profit from price falls as well as price rise. However, be careful to choose a well run broker, such as CMC markets

Global environment always influences volatility

All stock exchanges are now part of the global information flow, and Singapore is no exception. Investors don’t like international tension, such as the situation between the US and North Korea. They also dislike uncertainty, such as how far US interest rates are likely to rise. All of these factors add to volatility.

Price volatility is always greater before key Federal Reserve announcements or major US economy statistics such as the non-farm payroll data released each month.

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A)

M&A activity, even when it’s based on rumours and hotly denied by the parties involved, can send share prices into overdrive. But Singapore has seen a slow start this year in terms of M&A activity. Some property deals have taken place, but nothing like the contested takeovers that really encourage price movements, on the back of the uncertain outcome.

The investor who carefully observes these market fluctuations can start taking advantage of highly volatile prices to make excellent profits.

6Days Dalat / Phan Thiet / Mui Ne + Saigon
Description:

Warm welcome by our local guide then we embark on a city tour, which bring us first to the Catholic Cathedral of Notre Dame - Completed in 1880 and is said to be on the site of an old pagoda. We also see the architecture of the majestic Post Office - Built during the same time period and featuring two enormous murals depicting maps of Vietnam as it was many decades ago proceeding for our 40-Mins flight to “City of Spring” – Dalat ,built as a vacation retreat for French colonial officials, Dalat still retains a dignified European air together with the presence of distinct hill tribes here, truly gives us a cheery feel of East meets West.

Begin your day with a sumptuous breakfast amidst the cool and crisp mountain fresh air before commencing our tour of Dalat, visiting Langbian Mountain – From the summit of Langbian you will see the Gold and Silver Streamline(The Jeep up to Submit is on personal account). Next, visit Domain De Marie Church and Flower National Park. After lunch, proceed on to the largest waterfall in Dalat - Datanla waterfall. Here, you can also enjoy the roller coaster (personal account) where you can enjoy the fresh air as well as take picture with the wild scenery. Next, we will visit the biggest temple in Dalat - Truc Lam Pagoda, which was also once the summer residence of Vietnam's last emperor, Bao Dai. Overnight at Dalat Hotel.

After a hearty breakfast in hotel, we will proceed to Phan Thiet, located on the south of Cam Ranh Bay and once a part of the Cham kingdom. Phan Thiet is also famous for its locally produced fish sauce and dragon fruits which are exported worldwide. Visit to local fishing village, Phan Thiet Harbour, Whale Temple & Pôshanư Cham Tower will be our highlights of today after lunch. Continuing on to Mui Ne, enjoy a tour of the completely untamed area with a wide colour contrast of sand dunes from dark red to snow white sand, driving along a long stretch road of white sandy beaches with the sea on one side and endless Sand Dunes on the other (Include 1 round of sand boarding per person).

The morning is free at leisure for you to have rest & relax time on the beach. After lunch, we will commence with our journey back to Ho Chi Minh City. If time permits, we will head to Ben Thanh Market for some cheap and good bargain shopping! Proceed back hotel after dinner.

Depart for My Tho. Take the boat ride through the Bao Dinh natural canal, view the stilt houses and the fruit plantation along the river sides. Visit the My Tho wholesale fruit market. Proceed to the Tortoise Island. Enjoy the nice boat ride through the Tan Thach natural canal in Ben Tre, cruise under the shadow of the water coconut trees. Visit the family where you can experience the agricultural lifestyle. Trekking through the fruit plantation in Thoi Son Island, enjoy the rowing boat ride along the creeks before returning to My Tho by motorised boat. End the day with a performance of the famous water puppet show. The Vietnamese traditional art of water puppetry has roots that date back to the 10th century when it originated in the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam. Overnight at Saigon Hotel

After breakfast at hotel and free for your own activities till transfer to airport for your return flight to Singapore. We hope you have enjoyed your holidays with unforgettable memories travelling with CTC Travel.

Planning For Unfortunate Events In Life

by noreply@blogger.com (SGYI) @ SG Young Investment

It has been a tough week for me as some unfortunate events happened. I shall not go into the details of what happened but rather focus on the planning aspects before any unfortunate events happen in our lives.

The following is what I think will help at least alleviate some of the problems which we will encounter if something unfortunate happen to us or our loved ones:

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

The lasting power of attorney or LPA in short is a legal document which allows a person to voluntarily appoint one or more persons ('donee(s)') to make decisions and act on his behalf should he lose mental capacity one day. A donee can be appointed to act in the two broad areas of personal welfare and property & affairs matters.

I first heard of LPA a few years back from a colleague but didn't really understand how important it was. A point to note is LPA is only useful if someone is still alive but cannot make decisions himself. If he passes away, only a will drafted by legal representatives can be used.

LPA is getting more and more important that the government actually waived the application fees since 2014. The waiver is stipulated to end next year. If you're interested to find out more about LPA, you can click here. To apply for LPA, click here. I will be doing this for my parents immediately.

If you do not have LPA at that time when something happens, you'll have to apply to the court for a deputy to act on behalf of a family member and it can be a tiring and long process at that time. So its better to get an LPA ready now.

Hospitalisation Insurance - Medishield Life and Integrated Shield Plans

Another very important thing we must have is hospitalisation insurance. Hospital bills are not cheap at all and it can be stressful to handle the bills while having to take care of your loved ones. All Singaporeans including permanent residents are protected automatically under a basic healthcare insurance called Medishield Life. This insurance covers for life even for those with serious medical conditions currently up to B2 ward in the hospital. For the detailed benefits, you can refer here.

Medishield life is indeed just basic. If we want to have better healthcare coverage, we can get it from a private insurer. I'm sure many of us know about this. We can cover up to private hospital and even cover fully such that we don't have to pay a single cent for the hospital bills. Something to take note when buying hospitalisation insurance is the deductible and the co-insurance. We can cover these 2 through riders where the premiums have to be paid in cash. You can consult a financial consultant for the various hospitalisation plans out there.

Eldershield - Basic Disability Income

Besides hospitalisation insurance, all Singaporeans above the age of 40 are also covered under Eldershield. This is an insurance which pays out a monthly sum of money should we be severely disabled.  “Severe disability” is the inability of an individual to perform at least three of the six Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) independently, with or without mobility aids (e.g. walking aids, wheelchair). This means that the individual will require the physical assistance of another person for the ADL. Under the Eldershield, we can receive $300 or $400 up to 6 years.

Be sure to check if you or your loved ones is covered under Eldershield as they may have opted out unknowingly. Log on to the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board website with your SingPass. After logging in, please select “My Messages” and check under the “Healthcare” section. If you are covered under ElderShield, this section will also let you know the ElderShield insurer you are covered under*.

* If you are not covered under ElderShield, the CPF website will not reflect any infomation on ElderShield.

I checked my father's Eldershield and was surprised that he was not covered under it. He had no recollection of opting out also so its good if we check.

If you are looking for higher disability income, the eldershield can be upgraded or you can get a seperate disability income insurance.

Home Protection Scheme - Protection for Home Mortgage

If you lose the ability to earn an income, paying for outstanding home mortgages can be really stressful. All HDB properties are protected under the home protection scheme (HPS) under CPF board. The HPS is a mortgage-reducing insurance that protects members and their families against losing their HDB flat in the event of death, terminal illness or total permanent disability. HPS insures members up to age 65 or until the housing loans are paid up, whichever is earlier.

For HDB, you can also get a private mortgage reducing term insurance and opt out of the HPS. But, it would not be that wise of a choice as I think HPS will be easier to claim in the event anything happens. HPS will just offset all the outstanding loans while for private mortgage insurance, they will pay out in cash and it may take some time. For private properties, it would also be wise to take up a mortgage term insurance. Private properties mortgage amounts will be even higher than HDB so it is better to cover ourselves.

Term Life Insurance - Lumpsum payout for future use

After an unfortunate event be it death or critical illness or disability, there will be a lost of income where your dependants may have some financial difficulties thereafter.

A basic term insurance pays out a lumpsum amount upon death. Riders can be added to increase the coverage to pay upon critical illness or total permanent disability.

The younger we get the term insurance, the more affordable the premiums will be. It can be as low as $100+ per month for a 1 Million coverage. Of course, being a term insurance, we will not get anything back vs if we have bought a whole life insurance. For myself, I go for the term insurance because it would be impossible to pay the premiums for high coverage with a whole life insurance.

Are you prepared?

No matter how much planning we do, staying healthy is still the most important. Regular health check ups also help in detecting problems early. For Singaporeans age 40 and above, there is a government scheme which allows for health screening at $5. You can refer here for the information. You will get a letter on it too so do look out for it. Most people would have already received the letter. For us who are younger than 40, we can encourage our parents to go for it and for ourselves, it is also important to go for health check ups too.

Eat healthy, exercise and stay healthy. Having a balance life with lesser stress also helps too. Hope the above planning tips are useful for your future.
