OEW: Vietnam: What you won't see in the Travel Brochure

by noreply@blogger.com (Seth Manchester) @ Outer Heaven Paintball

Operation End War: Vietnam is an event set up by Modern Combat Sports which includes a nine day trip to Vietnam and the nearby city. The game takes place in the Vietnamese jungle. For this event MCS is also providing the markers and gear for those that want to go. Given the jungle setting, they will also be providing Tiger Stripe uniforms. As much as I like the event and location, I do have some mixed feelings; because of the communist government in Hanoi. This is also coupled with my knowledge of the conflict and its aftermath; not just for the Americans that fought there, but for the groups of highland indigenous peoples that fought and bled alongside American Special Forces. For this article, I'm not wanting to bash MCS for a truly great idea and location; however, I do feel obligated to bring attention to the unspeakable acts the communist government committed to those that sided with the American forces in that conflict.

The Montagnards: For centuries these people lived in the highlands of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. When the French came into what was known as Indochina, they brought material and other resources while also acting to protect the rights of the mountain people of this area. The low land Vietnamese had a word for these people, “Moi,” roughly translated to savage. This term was used because the highland peoples have Malaysian and Polynesian features and were taller and larger than the more slender low land Vietnamese. The people of the central highlands were more than happy to accept the French. Many of them joined the French army after World War 2 to fight the Viet Minh in what was the first Indochina war. After the war, the country was divided between the communist north which was under Ho Chi Minhand and the religious and political refugees of the south who wanted to grow their own democratic government.

The United States and Special Forces: Prior to the full entry of American combat forces to Vietnam, the U.S. Army Special Forces were already in the country acting as advisors to the South Vietnamese military. The U.S Army Special Forces were training the South Vietnamese military to fight a guerrilla war against the Viet Cong that were roaming the countryside. At that time, the American operators came across the tribal people of the mountain; the, “Yards,” as they became known by American operators. The Yards had no say in the government and were not liked by the Vietnamese (neither north nor south). For American Special Forces (Green Berets), the Montagnards, were the kind of fighter they came to love and respect. The American Special Forces were equally seen as favorable to the Yards, because the Vietnamese always confiscated their spears and crossbows, and the Special Forces provided instant access to weapons. The Special Forces were eager to make use of the talent pool of willing and eager students. The Yards also helped the American operators survive the hazards of booby traps. These factor lead to a very deep and strong connection between the two groups.

In the early days of Special Forces involvement, the operators organized the C.I.D.G. (Civilian Irregular Defense Group). The bad thing was that the Special Forces units also had camps scattered throughout the south of the country that were vulnerable to attack from the communist north, making it necessary for the Special Forces to move the Yards into their camps. This move proved to be the best call they could make in the long run, because having the Americans by their side encouraged the Yards to fight back. To make matters worse, local conventional units were not always the best to support a SF A camp because it would make things uncomfortable for the tribes the Montagnards that lived among the operators. The Special Forces knew they would have to provide their own means of supporting their camps that were under threat of attack or were already overrun. This lead to the creation of the Mobile Strike Force (Mike Force). In many ways, it was the QRF (Quick Reaction Force) for those camps. Many Yards were more than willing to join up. The team medics took care of the kids and the sick villagers that lived within the A camp, further strengthening the deep bond between the two groups. They took care of the Yards’ families that were killed in combat action. Such circumstances created unforgettable bonds.

The American withdrawal and the aftermath: With the growing antiwar sentiment and the withdrawal of American combat forces from Vietnam, many Special Forces operators felt like they were screwing over the Yards. They did what they could to save as many of them as they could before the Special Forces withdrew from Vietnam. In 1975, communist forces overran Saigon (today’s Ho Chi Minh City), and put an end to the war, uniting the country under the communist flag. Then, the communist government in Hanoi initiated a policy to destroy the Montagnards. Many Montagnards were rounded up and put into “Political reeducation” camps (a nice way of saying gulags) and many were tortured. Those that did not get put in the camps endured policy after policy made to suppress their culture. In many respects, the actions of the communist government against the Montagnards can literally be seen as cultural genocide. Other Montagnards still had the weapons and skills that they received from their time working alongside American Special Forces and fought what was essentially a guerrilla fight to preserve their culture. Many Montagnards set up makeshift villages and churches in the jungle, where at times they shot it out with the communist Vietnamese and Cambodian forces. This fighting kept up well into the early 1990’s. A U.N. brokered a cease fire and the Montagnards were made to give up their weapons. Many of these people managed to get to the United States and as a result of the loyalty and the bonds shared between the Yards and American Special Forces, the Yards settled into the area around Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The main reason is because Fort Bragg is the home of the JFK Special Warfare Center and School.

Today’s Persecution: Even today, the Montagnard people face religious persecution from the communist government. This includes forced sterilization, beatings, the outlawing of their languages all aimed at annihilating their culture and way of life. Cultural genocide and even outright torture are believed to be justified as many Montagnard people practice a denomination of the Christian faith. Barely anything is done to stop this. I’m sickened to see the world turn a blind eye to the suffering of these people.

As a personal note to this article, I in no way what so ever have any animosity aimed at Modern Combat Sports, or those affiliated with them. My issue is, as a result of my research on this subject matter and my being a historian, I do not see why anyone would want to go to a country with a continuously growing record of human rights abuses. For the record, I am proud to be an American, I am proud that I had a relative who served in that war, and I am proud to have known those that have served; however, I am disgusted that my elected leaders and the United Nations have turned their backs on these people. I’m not sure if the communist government is paying off those in the U.N. or if it is just “political convenience” to ignore what can be considered war crimes, but never the less, I am unwilling to likewise ignore such heinous violation of human rights.
