Many people have caught onto the minimalist travel movement. Meaning, more and more people travel with nothing more than a small cabin carry-on. To some, this may seem crazy, but to others it is perfect to pack only the essentials and save money by not checking in baggage! But whether you are traveling with extra baggage or not, a solid carry-on suitcase is still a must! Packing for a trip can be quite an exhausting procedure, especially when you don’t have the right type of luggage. Finding the perfect carry-on suitcase can also be quite daunting, especially for those not into shopping or with a budget. Luckily, we have searched high and low to prepare a ready-at-hand list of our top picks for carry-on suitcases. To make this list optimal for affordable, minimalist travel, we’ve made sure each suitcase is small and light enough for RyanAir requirements. RyanAir is a budget airlines that has strict guidelines on how big and heavy your carry-on suitcase can be before you have to pay more for check-in. RyanAir cabin luggage requirements: a max of 55x40x20cm with a 10kg max weight. (In inches that means: 21.65 inches x 15.748 inches x 7.87 inches and 22.0462 […]

5 Greek Temples You Can’t Miss
by Heesun @ Me Want Travel
Wed Dec 06 08:30:02 PST 2017
Temple Hopping in Greece Aside from its undeniable rich history and fascinating culture, Greece is internationally known for its trademark architecture. Among their many world-renowned landmarks, the Hellenic Republic’s beautiful temples still stand as not only one of the country’s main tourist attractions, but also as a reminder that Greece is one of the oldest and most durable civilizations that has ever existed. In this article we will take a look at five of the most recognizable Greek temples that you should visit if you happen to travel to Greece Temple of Olympian Zeus Ancient History highlights that the Temple of Zeus is one of the largest temples ever built in ancient history thanks to its ambitious layout and distinctively tall columns. Such was the ambition of the temple that it took 700 hundred years to be completed. During its heyday, the temple featured numerous gigantic statues of Zeus made out of gold and chryselephantine. As Athens is likely to be the first stop for any visitor to Greece, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is the best place to start your temple hopping. You can see more on what to do in Athens here. Can an airport lounge membership save you money?
by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World
Sun Nov 26 13:00:22 PST 2017
It’s a trap that’s easy to fall into: once you’ve experienced what it’s like to have an airport lounge membership it’s very hard to opt out again. After several years of free passes and a gifted membership, last year I found myself without access to Air New Zealand’s Koru Lounge and associated member benefits. Sitting at the gate to wait for your flight without the glam feel and perks a lounge brings suddenly feels a lot less glam. There are generally four ways you can gain access to an airport lounge: Pay for a business-class (or better) ticket Improve your airline status to Gold or higher. This means frequently flying with the same airline rather than purchasing the best fare available Travel with someone who is a member Pay for a membership My Westpac credit card meant no joining fee and a $125 discount on the annual fee for Air New Zealand’s Koru airport […]

Malay Cuisine: Food in Penang and Kuala Lumpur
by pvrouvas @ The Only Pete | Travel & Technology Blog
Sat Dec 17 18:45:26 PST 2016
I know for a fact that I had never tasted nor wondered what Malay food was like until I showed up in Malaysia. After a few weeks and dozens of meals in the country, I’m still not 100% sure what Malay food really is. Why? The food in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and throughout the country, as well as the population, is a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Between the Chinese noodle soups and Indian curry dishes, both of which are local styles, it’s pretty difficult to distinguish what is solely Malay. Even though I couldn’t pick it out of

Hanoi Coffee | About The Best Coffee in Vietnam

Hanoi Coffee Culture I, Hanoi Coffee Culture I.1 Overview of Coffee in Hanoi The coffee was first imported to Hanoi by French during their first colonial exploitation here. With the formation of the French Quarter where the French immigrated, they brought their favorite drink, and Hanoi coffee began to take its first steps on the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake. Following the French invasion at the 1800s, coffee was introduced in Vietnam, but the source of coffee back then was limited therefore it was considered as a luxury good, only the French colonists along with Nguyễn dynasty’s nobles could have […]

Top Places to Visit in Mexico City
by Heesun @ Me Want Travel
Wed Nov 08 21:31:59 PST 2017
Mexico City is a beautiful place and is having a bit of a moment with all the travel blogger hype. If you’re a fan of architecture and/or design, you will love Mexico City with its brightly colored homes, courtyards, and greenery. If you don’t, you can directly complain to me or blame it on me. Oh yea, you can also check out the pyramids at Teotihuacan, which were created around 100 BC, nbd. And the food…I pretty much lived on a diet of tacos and determined that it was the lifestyle I was meant to live. Also, please buckle in and prepare for a crap ton of solo shots because Mexico City is so damn photogenic. Top Places to Visit in Mexico City 1. La Casa Azul – aka Frida Kahlo’s home. The use of color and print in her home is awesome and so is learning how deeply this woman influenced art and fashion. She even became a symbol of the feminist movement. It was crazy to learn more about her personal life, like how she suffered from polio, then survived a horrible bus accident, married fellow artist Diego Rivera who was 20 years her senior, Diego slept with her […]

Things I learnt when an airline lost my luggage

In July I was travelling from Barcelona to Luxembourg when security strikes at Barcelona airport meant we were unable to get through security in time to board our flight. However our checked bags did make the flight and took off without us and were subsequently lost by the airline for four days. This resulted in us having to find an alternative route to Luxembourg with only the clothes on our back and the items in our hand luggage. Just over a month later my luggage again failed to turn up on a luggage carousel, this time in Auckland. Thankfully this time it was located within a few hours in Frankfurt, having missed my connection to Hong Kong 30 hours earlier. I got it back three days later. Visiting Stanley and Repulse Bay in Hong Kong
by Sharon @ Me Want Travel
Fri Jan 19 08:45:45 PST 2018
I had been staying in Chiang Mai, Thailand for a month or so and plan on staying there until around March. During this time, I decided to surprise my parents back in Hong Kong (they live there half the year)! I flew over on the 7th without them knowing, and when they opened the door to greet me my dad was in shock and my mom cried. My eyes welled up a little too, haha. It was wonderful hanging out with my parents. I headed back to Chiang Mai on January 16th, but while I was in Hong Kong I was trying to bond with family and get out of the house each day. The other day we visited Stanley and Repulse Bay. The last time I went was with a friend, so it had been a while since going with family. Transportation To get to Stanley and Repulse Bay, we suggest taking a bus rather than a taxi to save money, as the bus is convenient and takes you directly there. Taking a taxi can cost at least 100 HKD, while buses may price under 10 HKD. I like sitting on these double deckers cause you can get a […]

I had some expectations for Bangkok when I arrived at 4 AM on yet another “perfectly” scheduled night bus drop off. Tales of the epic street parties, unbelievable street food, and strangely, flocks of lady boys, swirling around my head. As expected, the city turned my sleep cycle upside down. We regularly went to bed after 6 am and slept deep into the afternoon, despite the laundry women’s best attempts to chat and work right outside of our room starting at 7 AM each morning. We stayed at Greenhouse, a hotel/bar one block from Khao San Road, the main tourist party street in

For the past several years, the use of new point-of-sales (POS) technologies, like Square, that use a touchscreen have become popular among businesses. These systems are sleek, easy to use, and have decreased the length of in-store credit card transactions. For me, they have also done one more thing – raise my self-consciousness about not tipping. One reason shop owners love these systems, I assume, is that they increase tips. After the cashier swipes your card, they flip the screen around to face you and you see a screen that looks like this: Before these systems, a customer would have

Eating it Raw in the Largest Fish Market in South Korea – Jagalchi Market
by IFOTC @ Itchy Feet on the Cheap
Mon Mar 13 12:00:16 PDT 2017
Busan’s Jagalchi Market (자갈치시장), the largest fish market in South Korea, has taken up two very different places in my memory. The first one is a very positive place, where the memories of incredible lunches, lively atmospheres, excitement and intrigue all sit. The second place is dark. It’s usually avoided at all costs. Eating in the Food Capital of Malaysia – George Town, Penang

Leaving Southern Thailand behind, the journey to Malaysia involved an overnight ferry, four different mini-vans, and the most unorganized customs/border service I experienced in Southeast Asia. And that’s saying a lot considering the tourist swindling operations at the Laos border. In the customs office, the border officials requested our immunizations card, something the United States does not provide. After denying their request, we let them take our temperatures and they asked us if we had the Zika virus – of course we all replied that we did not. After sitting in the office for 45 minutes while they copied our information by hand

Out of everywhere I went last year there are some clear winners in my mind as to my favourite places of 2017. 2017 was an epic year of travel for me. I achieved all the plans and dreams I had this time last year, visiting five countries for the first time and quite a number of new cities. Madrid, Spain I’d been to Barcelona before and was surprised when it didn’t blow me away as I’d expected it to. This meant I hit Madrid in July without high expectations and found it to be one of my favourite places. Madrid was sweltering but the rooftop pool at Dear Hotel Madrid was beautifully cool as well as being located in the vicinity of views and cocktails. The breakfast offering was also outstanding and our room probably the biggest Renee and I had while travelling through Europe. The shops were open late, […]

7 Reasons Iceland Should Be Your Next Travel Destination
by Heesun @ Me Want Travel
Wed Nov 29 08:30:37 PST 2017
Iceland is a gorgeous country and has been receiving its fair share of hype due to social media. I went in March 2016 and it was 100% worth it, even though it was cold AF (I’m not going to lie to you). Here are 7 reasons why Iceland should be your next travel destination. 7 Reasons Why Iceland Should Be Your Next Travel Destination 1. Waterfalls – Waterfalls are EVERYWHERE in Iceland. It was pretty standard to see at least one an hour when we were driving. Here are just two examples, the first is Seljalandsfoss and the second is Haifoss (the ending -foss denotes that it is a waterfall). 2. Icelandic horses – As you drive around the Ring Road or throughout Iceland’s beautiful scenery, you will most likely chance upon some Icelandic horses. They’re extremely adorable and remind me of ponies. Sometimes, they’re so still that you feel like you’re looking at a photograph, with only their tails blowing in the wind to hint at their realness. 3. Double rainbows on the regular – With its random rains, seeing double rainbows in Iceland is a pretty regular magical occurrence. And being in Iceland, you have the added benefit of a dope […]

5 Awesome Places to Drink Beer in SF
by Heesun @ Me Want Travel
Wed Dec 13 08:30:13 PST 2017
I live in SF and I like beer. By no means does that make me an expert, but after having gone bar hopping for the past 6 years (which my Dad still finds hard to believe) and spending way too much dough on booze, I’ve curated a list of bars that are my faves. Whether it’s just to kick one back with your homies or to try new flavors, this list has got something for you. 5 Awesome Places to Drink Beer in SF 1. Biergarten (Hayes Valley, SF) – Perfect for sunny summer days (be sure to still bring a jacket though, for no other reason than this is SF) and with a group of friends, Biergarten always delivers. There are always a few tasty beers on tap, as well as wine and non-alcoholic options. They also feature a smattering of small plates so you can nosh as you drink those steins. Prost! 424 Octavia St, San Francisco, CA 94102 2. Mission Bar (Mission, SF) – If you’re a fan of dive bars, this place is the bee’s knees. They offer cheap beer, have a pool table, booths that you can lose yourself in conversation in, and are cash only. I […]

Chiang Mai, Thailand Cooking Class (Mama Noi Cookery School)
by Sharon @ Me Want Travel
Sat Dec 30 23:54:23 PST 2017
I am currently back in Chiang Mai, Thailand (for about 2-3 months)! I’ve been doing some slow travel lately. My friends from Taiwan visited for a few days, so we decided to take a Chang Mai, Thailand cooking class. They told me they booked with Mama Noi Cookery School, so I booked online as well to join them. Chiang Mai, Thailand Cooking Class (Mama Noi Cookery School) We booked the half day evening course from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM for 800 baht (about $24.58 USD). This included the creation of a soup, a stir fried meal, curry dish, and a thai tea. Market + Exploration We started the day getting picked up at our studio apartment heading to the market. Our host showed us some of the ingredients we were going to be using. It was pretty cool checking out the Thailand local foods. The Thai lemon basil was our favorite! I thought we would get to pick out our ingredients for our meals at the market, but this was not included in the evening class. We then headed to the actual cooking school: And we played with puppies for the first 15 minutes hahaha they were soooo cute: The […]

10 things to do before you travel internationally
by sarahkennerley@gmail.com @ Sarah Sees The World
Tue Nov 14 13:00:04 PST 2017
Excluding the mandatory essentials of booking flights and accommodation and even if you’re only travelling overseas for a short period of time there are a number of easy to forget items it’s important to cross off before hopping on a plane. Prevent stress by ensuring you’ve considered these 10 things to do before you travel internationally. 1. Check your Passport It seems a no brainer, but the number of stories you hear of people turning up to fly with an expired passport makes this a mandatory item in this list. There needs to be enough space in your passport for new stamps, it can’t be damaged and should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your journey. Make sure you take copies of your passport and carry them with you, and make use of modern technology by either scanning or taking a photo of the relevant pages and store […]

How to Choose the Best Backpacking Backpack in 2018
by Sharon @ Me Want Travel
Thu Jan 11 07:51:28 PST 2018
Although suitcases have taken over the traveling world for many years, backpacks are increasing in popularity with the rise in world travelers and backpacker culture. It could be argued that backpacks are even more convenient than carrying a suitcase. Perhaps it is the fact that backpacks allow more freedom and ease of travel when getting through airports, going up or down stairs, or crossing busy streets with rocky pavement. Purchasing a new travel backpack should be seen as an investment, as you should be choosing a quality pack that will do its job without too much wear and tear. That doesn’t mean that you need to blow your savings (that could be used for travel) when there are plenty of affordable backpacks out there! Many backpacks are also carry-on friendly to cut down on extra travel costs. But with so many options you may be wondering what some of the main features to look for are. So, to help you out, we have made a list with a few tips and backpack suggestions before you go out and make your purchase! Without further ado, here is our guide on how to choose the best backpacking backpack in 2018. 1. Front […]

How to Spend an Overnight Layover in Denver, Colorado
by Sharon @ Me Want Travel
Tue Nov 07 20:56:22 PST 2017
In September I traveled around the US for about 2 weeks. I initially purchased a flight to visit my friend in Austin, Texas but found that the flight included a one night layover in Denver. In the end I thought it would actually be kind of cool to spend a night in a new state (I had never visited Colorado before). I had no idea what to expect as the only thing I knew about Colorado was that it was one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana… I got into Denver quite late, unfortunately, arriving to the AirBnB around 5-6 PM. My flight was also early the next day, so I only had maybe 4-5 hours to explore the city. The host was nice enough to give me a ride to downtown Denver. How to Spend an Overnight Layover in Denver, Colorado 16th Street Mall My host dropped me off at the 16th Street Mall, which is actually a one-mile long street of restaurants and stores. They have a free shuttle that you can take up and down the street. Here’s a picture I took of a drunk girl riding it… Poke at Menya Noodle Bar I decided […]

I can get off a flight, rock straight through customs, use my Oyster Card on the Tube, walk into a bar in London and pay with a local bank card. I spent my last few days in London in late August wondering why I don’t live there. I cycled along canals on a Boris Bike, walked through parks as people sunbathed and enjoyed picnics, ate at amazing restaurants, and drank outside at pubs with good people. But surely it’s possible to somehow have the best of the travel and home worlds, regardless of how isolated this country is? Because I also love living in Wellington right now. So I tried to sleep in this: I ended up being unable to because I kept worrying about how […]
