Phong Nha Khe Bang & the art of trusting
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy
Fri Aug 09 13:25:28 PDT 2013
Karst hills rose spectacularly around us as our boat put-putted upriver. We passed grazing buffalo, playful, naked children, a church spire shrouded by dense foliage, and boxy pastel houses lining the river. Several tourist boats raced by, their hulls patterned with flaming serpents and covered with bright blue shelters. As far as I could see, all passengers were Vietnamese. Up ahead was a marbled cliff-face, the cave accessible only by a foreboding slit in the rock several metres high. Our captain killed the engine and we drift towards the cavern in silence. We were in Phong Nha Khe Bang National Park, home to Asia’s oldest karst area. The karst formation here has evolved over 400 million years and hidden from view is a 104 km network of caves and underground rivers. I had joined a tour from Hue, and was discharged from the bus beside Son River, along with four exuberant boys from Nha Trang. Along with a tour guide, a bored-looking professional photographer, and a husband-wife team to pilot the boat, we headed along Son River to Phong Nha Cave. Suspense hung over us – along with the rocky lip – as we entered the thin slot that provided us […]

8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi
by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase
Tue Feb 02 20:48:50 PST 2016
The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu May 01 04:30:42 PDT 2014
“a place around the bend where he could jump off”
Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?
A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

How to Deal with Wanderlust When You’re Stuck at Home
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Sun Feb 19 20:14:26 PST 2017
Wanderlust. It’s a serious condition. You’re not sure when it’s going to bite, but it always strikes with a vengeance. It gets under your skin, makes you fidgety, makes you feel like you’ve got to move right now. THIS MINUTE! For a lucky few, they can satiate that itch at a moment’s notice, but for the majority of us, it’s not so easy. It requires a series of delicate manoeuvres – scrimping and saving, buttering your bosses up for leave approval, finding a decent length of time without a wedding or milestone celebration you’ve promised to be around for… But the thing about wanderlust is that it just won’t abate until you’ve done something about it. So short of actually travelling, here are a few of my own tips for dealing with the travel bug when you’re stuck at home: Start planning a trip It is amazing how differently I feel when I have a flight booking in my Inbox or a road trip date written on the calendar. It’s a sudden liberation. I have something to count down to. I have purpose – suddenly, work is about saving to travel and time is spent researching, scrapbooking ideas, calculating costs and just envisioning myself […]

Sapa: Hiking with the Hmong
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy

Tung had buck teeth and a smile that played about her eyes. She wore huge hoop earrings and indigo embroidered clothes that marked her out as a member of one of Vietnam’s highland minority groups, the Black Hmong. It’s hard to tour Sapa in Vietnam’s northwest without being mobbed by the Hmong. When my bus arrived in town, I barely caught a glimpse of the charming mountain village before my exit was blockaded by a horde of little ladies dressed in the trademark Hmong clothing: black hemp jackets and skirts embroidered with bold, geometric patterns in even bolder, contrasting colours. They covered their legs in cotton ribbons wound all the way up to the knee. On their backs they carried woven baskets as if they were backpacks. You can’t move through Sapa without Hmong women badgering you to buy their textile wares or join them on a hill trek. But you can’t really blame them. Tourism is what it’s all about in Sapa. It’s the town’s raison d’etre. And for good reason. Sapa resembles a Swiss alpine town, but with a greater tangle of electrical lines and more rundown façades. The main road snakes down a valley and is lined with enticing eateries and […]

How to style your night out in Hanoi
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy
Sun Aug 11 15:55:04 PDT 2013
Whether it’s huddled on tiny plastic stools cluttering a footpath, admiring a rooftop view over Hoàn Kiếm Lake, or strutting down a strobe-lit dance floor, Hanoi offers a night life to suit any taste. Hanoi’s nightly drinking venues are easily divisible into three broad categories: ultra-informal, chic but casual, and top-end decadence. Ultra-informal Any visit to Vietnam is incomplete without trying bia hoi at some point. Bia hoi is home-brewed beer sold from impromptu street-side establishments that vanish during the day. Image courtesy of Hanoi Weather. At night, lights are strung up over tree branches and tiny plastic stools and tables sprawl over pavement and onto the roads. Bia hoi is served in plastic pints for 5000 dong, or just 25 cents. These places are popular among locals and the more daring tourists, who looked around wide-eyed and bewildered. Every hour, police cruise along the street. Those people sitting on stools in the gutter are made to rise and move to the footpath, but once the police disappear, the gutter sprawl returns. At my favourite bia hoi, an entrepreneurial landlord rented out his outhouse, accessed by a long, dark alleyway. He siat in the doorway and demanded 2000 dong for the privilege of using his unlit, […]

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local
by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Jun 18 10:31:49 PDT 2015
Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.
Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

The best propaganda museums in Vietnam
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy
Mon Feb 10 09:07:44 PST 2014
No matter where you grow up, you’re always going to hear a slightly skewed version of historical events. As an Australian, I learned briefly in high school about the trauma Aussie soldiers – and their American allies – experienced during Vietnam War. But travelling to the country itself gives you an entirely new, and often thoroughly biased, perspective on events. Vietnam’s museums provide quality displays and fascinating stories you often don’t hear back home. But many of them do portray an interesting version of events. Here are three Vietnamese museums that display a more obvious inclination towards Vietnamese propaganda, sometimes to the point of hilarity: War Remnants Museum – Ho Chi Minh City Type ‘Vietnamese propaganda museums’ into Google and the words War Remnants Museum dominate the page. Nestled away in a leafy downtown suburb in Ho Chi Minh City, this museum is dedicated to the Vietnam War – or, as it is more suitably called in Vietnam, the American War. It is a first-class museum, an imposing grey concrete structure that makes you tremble just to look at it. And perhaps that’s the museum’s point, because as I wandered through the well-presented exhibits, I got a sense, as an Australian, […]

SURVIVING BORACAY ALONE
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Apr 24 12:18:24 PDT 2014
In March of 2012, I was nearly finished with a 3-week journey moving west through the Visayas region of The Philippines. Visayas is famous for beach and diving destinations. I have never been very interested in beaches, so I was focused on the cities of Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. I did, however, have a beach destination as my final stop before flying out of the country. That beach was the most famous beach in all of The Philippines- Boracay. I was all by my sad self during these weeks in the Philippines. I’d met people here and there along the way, but I didn’t join a backpacker caravan or fall in love. So, how is it traveling to Boracay alone, anyway?
Often beach destinations entice travelers of impossibly clear turquoise waters bookended by eternal sunrises and sunsets. So often, ... Read More »

LIVE LIKE A LOCAL: RENT A SHORT-TERM APARTMENT WHILE TRAVELING
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Thu Jun 05 11:30:18 PDT 2014
If you want to experience the true life of a place, experience it like a local: get an apartment in a true neighborhood. Wake up to the sounds of street vendors and garbage trucks. Be recognized with a smile by your local noodle-slinger.
If a city strikes your fancy, rent an apartment for a month and stick around for awhile.
Another advantage of worldwide Internet networking is that it allows us to exchange short-term apartments without going through an agent or company. Check the New York City craigslist sublet page and you’ll find plenty of Parisians happy to exchange their Left Bank apartment for a little temporary stepping stone on the Upper West Side. Though apartment exchanges are rare in Asia, there are plenty of expats and locals alike who will be vacating their adobe and happy to have someone trustworthy in ... Read More »

Social media has revolutionised travel and I’m not sure I like it
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Sun Jul 16 02:33:52 PDT 2017
When I talk about my first solo trip overseas this time 10 years ago, I feel like an octogenarian reflecting on simpler times. But I can’t help but feel that travel has changed – and I’m not sure it’s for the better. There are many ways travel as changed in the past 10 years, but perhaps the biggest game changer has been the advent of social media. Ten years ago, Facebook was a mere foundling. Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest weren’t even around. And I feel like without these huge influences in our lives, we were different travellers. Perhaps, even, better travellers. So how has social media changed us as jet setters? People forget to really appreciate the moment When the National Gallery of Victoria recently hosted a quality Van Gogh exhibit, I was one of the first through the doors. I freaking love Van Gogh. I’m sure I stared at his The Starry Night at the MoMA for a good 30 minutes. So I couldn’t wait to see a collection of his works in my home town. But I was completely dismayed by the fellow visitors to the exhibit. I watched people wander from one painting the the next, viewing everything […]

Halong Bay: Motorbike adventures
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy
Fri Apr 03 04:06:38 PDT 2015
Throughout Asia, I harboured dreams of whipping through the countryside on a motorbike. It’s the quintessential Asian adventure, right? The wind would lick at my hair and the breeze would cool me down. I’d scoot through out-of-the-way roads, waving congenially to locals zipping past me or looking on flabbergasted from the roadside. The freedom and independence would be beautiful and romantic. There was just one teeny, tiny setback. I had no confidence in my motorbiking abilities (a fear I am not alone in, it seems). Nor was it encouraging meeting numerous tourists carrying nasty scars or hospital bracelets as souvenirs from their own motorbike mishaps. No solo driving? No sweat; Vietnam is renowned for its Easy Rider programs, where motorcyclists take you on long-distance rides across the country. Plus if you’re a solo traveller, it’s pretty easy to pick up a more courageous fellow traveller to escort you on the back of their bike. And that’s exactly what I did. When fellow Hanoi hosteller Simon offered me (… OK, I may have begged) his teensy bike backseat, (on the proviso I secure my own bike helmet) for the ride to Halong Bay, I jumped at the opportunity. Screw the bus! […]

This is what it’s like to not have a place called “home”
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Sun Dec 17 16:30:21 PST 2017
I recently connected with Yasmin Helal, travel writing at Living Among the Locals. In this post, she explains what it’s like to be so nomadic that you lose sight of what’s “home”. I have been a traveller long before I can remember. One of my earliest memories is of myself clutching my sister’s warm hands as we both walked to preschool, with Kurdistan’s icy mountains in the background. That was before I could make a distinction between different cultures. It was a time when I didn’t care about being at home. I would have never guessed that I’d spend the rest of my life yearning for being at home. At some point in 1988, when the winter got colder and the war got bloodier, we fled in the darkness of the night, after which we crossed the borders by foot to Iran. Despite the high mortality rate among children and my parents’ war injuries, we made it alive. Permanent limbo I did feel at home in the few years that followed in Cairo. Those years were probably the closest I will ever feel at home. I’m told that even if I returned, I won’t feel the same. Cairo is a […]

Travel loneliness and the one skill you need to deal with it
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Mon Nov 27 01:07:17 PST 2017
My villa sat in the middle of rice paddies. It attracted dragonflies, butterflies and the occasional bats at night. I went to sleep to the hum of insects and awoke to the cock’s crow at the crack of dawn. Ducks waddled in a row through the rice paddies. The local farmers passing by never failed to smile. Sometimes they waved from afar or even attempted conversations in Bahasa and English with me. And yet in my first week in Bali, my overriding emotion was one of intense loneliness. Loneliness is natural and normal in travel We don’t talk about the loneliness enough, but it can be a fundamental part of travel – especially if you’re a solo traveller. Many times, when you’re in the right headspace, the solitude is welcome. Many more times, the friendships click easily into place, built on like-minded interests and a mutual need for company. Indeed, the last time I’d visited that same Balinese villa, I’d found myself in deep conversations and making plans with my housemates from the moment I arrived. But other times, especially when solitude is the last thing you want, it’s often the only thing you get. The universe likes to play […]

10 THINGS I CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT

Recently I’ve taken a four-month break off of travel to settle into a comfortable life in a quiet town. It’s been nice, mostly.
I do miss packing and unpacking the bags. I miss tossing away ripped up socks, giving away paperback books, and moving what’s left of my big shampoo into a small little shampoo thingy.
Some things are essential to have packed and ready to grab when I’m on the road. I will not include the obvious things like a camera, computer, passport, etc. These following are the little home run hitters that are easy to forget about, but always needed:
1. DENTAL FLOSS
I like to eat. I like to eat meat. I like eating late. My teeth are spaced fairly far apart from laughing too much. Stuff gets in there and I need to get it out. I’ve often been wandering ... Read More »

Lan Ha Bay: Rice wine & karaoke with the fishermen
by Amanda Bensted @ Vietnam – ARoamerTherapy
Sun Apr 26 13:46:32 PDT 2015
Our hosts poured us all another tipple of rice wine, prompted us to hold our shot glasses high in the air, and counted down to take the shot. The wine slipped down my throat, burning my insides along the way, and when I slammed the glass upside down on the wooden floorboards, the room swayed. Literally: it swayed. Because we were dining in a fisherman’s hut moored to one of the limestone pinnacles that define the Ha Long Bay region. This wasn’t what I had dreamed of when I chartered a boat with 3 other travel friends to cruise around Lan Ha Bay overnight with Asia Outdoors. But I certainly wasn’t complaining. No plush ocean liner could have beaten this experience. We had a big wooden boat all to ourselves, with a cabin filled with tables and chairs and a roof decked out with cushions for us to sit back and enjoy the view. And it was to be a mighty one. Lan Ha Bay cruise Lan Ha Bay might take second place to Ha Long Bay, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful; just more down-to-earth. It doesn’t get the crowds Halong Bay attracts – and it’s got something […]

Why don’t we ever talk about the bad days?
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Tue Jun 20 04:33:11 PDT 2017
Yesterday, I had a long wait in Yogyakarta Airport thanks to flight delays. I was in one of those troughs characteristic to solo travel, coming right off a soul-soaring high. I was sleep deprived, hung over, and sad at having had to farewell more like-minded travel souls. Another hostel family loved and lost. But I was also excited to begin my next journey in Bali. I anticipated rice paddies, hipster heaven and a whole bathroom to myself. This wasn’t a bad day. Yet when I was sitting by the mobile charging docks waiting for my phone to juice up, I started talking to a Dutch guy who was on his first ever solo trip overseas. He was heading home, having reduced his trip from 6 weeks to two. On the second day of his holiday, he was involved in a car accident in Jakarta and spent a night in hospital with minor injuries. Tired, jet lagged, injured and suffering culture shock, he decided to hell with it and brought forward his home-bound flight. It takes courage to admit defeat. In this exhibitionist, social media-frenzied world, it takes courage to confess that it isn’t all orange sunsets and tequilas by swimming […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND
by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase
Sun Oct 22 16:37:56 PDT 2017
Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.
Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

These Are the Reasons I Actually LOVE Squat Toilets
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Fri Jun 16 01:29:05 PDT 2017
Dingy back alley toilets are just one of the many things that accompany a more adventurous trip to Asia. But if you’re a spendthrift backpacker and you’re engaging in some authentic, down-in-the-dirt Asian travel, you’re going to encounter the drop toilet at some point. And it’s going to be your only option. Oh yes, the possibility of it can strike fear into many a traveller’s heart. And I get it. Some of those toilets are squalid affairs with hairy spider carcases hanging off the walls and a few unsavoury smears over the tiles (if you’re lucky enough to get tiles!). But here’s the thing. Ever since my first epic Southeast Asian trip in 2013, I’ve thrived in the squat toilet environment. I relish it! Maybe not the squalid hole-in-the-ground toilets, but sanitised squat toilets? I’d choose it over the Royal Throne any day. So just what is it that’s converted me to squatting? Here are some solid truths about why squat toilets are actually a far better way of doing business… 1. They’re actually more sanitary OK, again, I’m begging you to differentiate between the cesspool toilets you can come across in some middle-of-nowhere Laotian village and the sparkling squatters […]

When that romantic getaway turns into a solo journey
by Amanda Bensted @ ARoamerTherapy
Sat Sep 30 17:50:55 PDT 2017
It was meant to be a romantic holiday of fairytale proportions. And there I was, sprawled on our big bed in our spacious Osaka apartment, in my underwear, my hair dishevelled… … Consuming Pocky sticks by the packet, binge-watching Orange is the New Black, and trying to ignore my devastation at being abandoned by my lover midway through our trip. After our dreamlike holiday romance in Bali, I had spent two months counting down the days until I saw him again. I had images in my head of how the trip would go – a kind of Nicholas Sparks trailer of never-ending romance. So the reality came as something of a shock. His confused mess of emotions, in which his feelings for me were swallowed up entirely. My total inability to rekindle those feelings. Our attempts to recover what was lost by travelling as friends. Highs when he wrapped his arms around me, lows when he withdrew again. Then, eventually, a premature, flat farewell on a train platform. So how do you deal with the aftermath, when you’re in a foreign country, continuing on the same journey alone which you had planned to do with a romantic partner in tow? […]
