Ho Chi Minh City

Known to most as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is a city of contrasts. The pace of life is frenetic, and yet the wide boulevards and parks help the city retain an air of calm. Classic French architecture competes for attention with brand new high-rise buildings. The port hosts vast tankers and cruise-liners while tiny […]

Should Bike Girl begin to post again, albeit somewhat infrequently, or should our fair protagonist retire from this blog permanently?       Arc’teryx A2B Commuter Pants – $139 If Giro took the approach of making as few changes as possible to the Gap chinos model, then Arc’teryx went the opposite route. Water-repellant and quick drying with articulated knees and lots of reflective stuff (cuffs and pocket flaps), these look very functional. The technical details befit Arc’teryx’s reputation for high-performance. Luckily, the price-point is lower than I would expect from this company. A lot of my friends express frustration at having products dumbed down or flowered up when a women’s size is finally released. Arc’teryx gets points for making these just like the men’s model, just sized differently. Unfortunately, there’s still a double standard in the workplace. There are men who work in my building who could get away with wearing these to the office, but it wouldn’t fly for me. I need something a little more polished. [...]

Why “Nguyễn” is the most popular surname of Vietnamese?

by Thu Ngo Vu @ Beebee

According to World Geography, the surname ‘Nguyễn’ ranks the fourth most popular one in the world. In Vietnam, it makes up 38,4% of Vietnam’s population and undoubtedly becomes a common identity signal for Vietnamese people on the international stage. Why it is so popular? The answer lies in the history of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, ancient China’s disorder society made a part of ‘Nguyễn’ family migrate to Vietnam. In 1232, after the Ly Dynasty was usurped, Tran Thu Do forced descendants of the Ly family to change their surname into ‘Nguyễn’. In 1407, the Ho Dynasty collapsed, his descendants...

Exploring by cycle

by trekviet @ Vietnam Cycling and Hiking Tours, walking, trekking, trek, hike, ramble holiday in Vietnam

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0227. Exploring by cycle or  cycling is fast becoming a trend that not only appeals to the healthy youth ready to backpack, but to a larger demographic of tourists who want to go deeper, and in a more authentic way, in to a country. Vietnam tours are unique in this aspect, as the country boasts over 30 million motorcycles and countless bicycles.   Despite the rough roads and somewhat unreliable public transportation, the country is extremely bike friendly. This is something the intrepid and adventurous cyclist can take advantage of. Exploring on a motorbike can also be a great excuse to linger at your favourite beach, or maybe spend a night or two at that hotel you have been reading so much about in Hanoi.   Why a Bike? DCIM100GOPROGOPR0227. Navigating through the streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh may sound like a nightmare, as Vietnam truly has some of the worst traffic in Southeast Asia. But your bike (motor or cycle) will easily squeeze through the traffic and you will easily be able to find great parking spaces all around the city. When travelling further afield on Vietnam tours, many buses and ferries allow bikes to travel, which [...]

Hanoi Coffee | About The Best Coffee in Vietnam

Hanoi Coffee Culture I, Hanoi Coffee Culture I.1 Overview of Coffee in Hanoi The coffee was first imported to Hanoi by French during their first colonial exploitation here. With the formation of the French Quarter where the French immigrated, they brought their favorite drink, and Hanoi coffee began to take its first steps on the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake. Following the French invasion at the 1800s, coffee was introduced in Vietnam, but the source of coffee back then was limited therefore it was considered as a luxury good, only the French colonists along with Nguyễn dynasty’s nobles could have […]
