Vietnamese street food restaurant, Pho, has chosen Hammerson’s Highcross retail centre as the location for its first restaurant in Leicester.

Pho, Leicester.

Pho, Leicester.

by riponia @ Eyes on the prize

I don’t usually bother reviewing chain restaurants, but Pho – open now in Highcross – was definitely one I wanted to try.  My girlfriend used to visit her sister in Vietnam and she regularly regales me with tales of the sublime food – and on the few occasions I’ve tried it I’ve enjoyed the sharp, […]

Review: The Ale Stone

by coolasleicester @ COOL AS LEICESTER

For our latest micropub adventure we headed south west of Leicester city centre, to Alyestone Road to be precise, where we visited the appropriately named The Ale Stone, sister micropub to The Blue Boar in the city centre. This small watering hole opened in July 2017 and, as with most micropubs, is located in a […]

A Tale of Two Burgers

A Tale of Two Burgers

by riponia @ Eyes on the prize

It’s hardly an original observation to suggest that Leicester city centre must be at or approaching Peak Burger. GBK is the most recent to arrive, filling the former Laura Ashley store at the Clocktower entrance to Highcross. Can’t say I’ve been particularly tempted to try it – I expect it’s ok, but really Crafty has […]

Q&A with Framework Brewery

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

It’s no secret that I’m partial to a tipple (or two!), and when a winery or brewery makes an effort to not only create vegan drinks, but actively market them as such, I fall in love. Step in Framework Brewery. I first came across these guys at a vegan market and then started to see their beers pop up around various pubs in Leicester. They are proudly vegan which is so refreshing. Here, I talk to Jonathan, one of the founders of Framework, about why they are passionate about producing vegan beer, and what their plans are for the future. How did Framework Brewery begin? We moved into the building that we are currently in at the beginning of November 2016, received our kit mid-November and started brewing at the beginning of December 2016. Why did you choose Leicester? We (the directors) all live in Leicester and are proud of the fact. We are also (as far as we’re aware) the only microbrewery based in the city. You could say that Leicester chose us ☺ You are vocal about the fact that all your beers are vegan – why is this important to you? We saw the use of isinglass […]

"Useful" isn't a word you see much on restaurant websites. It doesn't quite fit with all the artfully styled food photography and action shots of chefs who fancy themselves as White Heat-era Marco. But how many of our dining choices are based, not on dazzling cooking or the lure of a shooting-star chef, but on convenience, location and user-friendliness?

Right, so the secret is now out. Maiyango is to relaunch as …”The Fish and The Chip”. The move from globally-influenced fine dining to nostalgic British tradition couldn’t really be more pronounced. The Orange Tree’s “Veeg-Inn” night

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

It’s no secret that the Orange Tree is one of my favourite pubs in Leicester. It’s cute, quirky and always has great music playing in the background. But most importantly, they’ve upped their vegan game significantly in the past couple of years. On their menu they regularly feature several different vegan starters, sandwiches, mains and desserts. And just this year they started a vegan only night called the “Veeg-Inn.” I went to the very first Veeg-Inn earlier this year and loved it. I even took two meat eating friends who were truly blown away by it (and one who said it got him thinking of going vegan). Since that first night, there have been a couple other vegan nights, each with a special theme. Last week I was delighted to have the chance to go again and sample their burger themed vegan night, which turned out to be a sell-out event packed with hungry vegans and the vegan-curious. For starters we had a couple drinks (vegan French red wine for me, Stella for him) and had onion rings and “frickles” (fried pickles) which were deliciously crispy. For my main I had the tofu panko-crusted burger with kimchi mayo, Asian slaw […]

Vegan eats in Salt Lake City, Utah

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

Over the Christmas break back in Arizona, I managed to include a little side trip to Salt Lake City, Utah to go snowboarding. Salt Lake is a great destination for skiiers and snowboarders who also enjoy city breaks, as Salt Lake City is about 45 minutes in a bus from a dozen different resorts (you’re spoiled for choice in terms of terrain). Unfortunately for us, Utah has been experiencing one of its worst years for snow on record, but we made the best of it (although our boards definitely were worse for wear after riding rocks all week!). What I found interesting was that while Salt Lake itself is incredibly vegan friendly, the resorts were terrible for vegans. And I mean terrible. We might as well have been in rural France. So let’s jump right in, starting with the food we ate in the city first. Zest The first night we arrived in Salt Lake was also Andrew’s birthday, so we headed straight for Zest which is a really lovely fully vegan restaurant that is a favourite of my mom’s. Looking at the menu I was OVERWHELMED with choices. This is the problem with vegan restaurants – I become incapable […]

Vegan pizza comes to Pizza Hut!

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

As many of you know, Pizza Hut recently rolled out vegan cheese to all of its UK restaurants after trialling it in a few select locations for the past few months. When Pizza Hut made the announcement you could feel the vegan community rejoice – particularly because we were all scratching our heads about their choice of where to trial the pizzas (“why not in MY hometown??”). I really wanted to be one of the first to try the new vegan cheese pizzas, but unfortunately for one reason or another it just kept getting put off. It doesn’t help that the vegan cheese pizzas are only available at sit down restaurants, and not for delivery. I’m not sure why this is the case – but apparently (or so I’ve heard in the twitterverse) the reason is because the takeaway service is technically a different company(?)… Who knows. What I do know is that you can order pizzas for pick up though if you don’t want to eat in the restaurant. However, you have to ring up to order because the vegan cheese is not available as an option online yet. Anyway, on to the pizzas themselves. Pizza Hut has two […]

Pho Leicester

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

Pho! In Leicester! I was so so excited to find out Pho was moving to Leicester, taking over the space previously occupied by the World Buffet (see ya). For those who don’t know, Pho is a small chain of family-owned Vietnamese restaurants located in several large cities throughout England. They have loads of vegan-friendly dishes and the food is delicious and plentiful (I’ve visited a couple locations in London). We went on opening night, which I realise is a bit unfair for a review, but rest-assured it was all good. On their opening weekend they were offering 50% off all dinners (not including booze), and as you can imagine it was hugely popular. We arrived just before 6pm and there was already a queue out the door – which, much like our bellies, swelled as we ate. Luckily for us the wait wasn’t long, and we were seated by the big windows and looked after promptly. When asked about drinks, I did enquire if they had vegan beers, but they were unsure. Armed with our smart phones, we were able to do a quick google search to find out which ones were vegan-friendly (apparently they all are). Despite the fact […]

Vegan in London

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

We just spent two nights in London and even though I go down there for work all the time, this is the first time in over a year (!) that I’ve gone just for fun. The main purpose of our trip was to go see The National, but we decided to spend a couple nights there, do some sightseeing and, of course, eat all the vegan food. The vegan food scene is exploding in London, and we only managed a tiny fraction of the restaurants we wanted to go to, including Fed by Water, 222 Vegan Buffet and Vx. Check out my vlog below for a look at our trip and all the delicious food we ate. Because I would like this blog to be about more than just the above vlog, I’ve compiled a list of vegan restaurants in London that I’ve been to, and those that are on my list to visit. Hopefully this will inspire you on your next trip to London! Places I’ve been (in no particular order): Tibits: Tibits is my go-to lunch spot in London. It’s a huge buffet with loads of options. Just be careful – you pay by weight! Coach and Horses: London’s […]

Craig Shakespeare sacked by Leicester City – breaking

Sneinton vegan market

by lindsay @ The Vegan Twist

I’ve known about the Sneinton vegan market for a while now, and I’m slightly ashamed to say I’ve only just visited them for the first time recently. For those who haven’t heard of the market, it is a regular event in Nottingham that takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 11-3pm. It has been running for a couple years now, and was buzzing when we went a couple weeks ago. It’s smaller than the Leicester market, but that’s to be expected from a monthly market rather than the bigger one-off events in my hometown. That said, the hot food options were endless, and me being me had to try everything which means we absolutely stuffed ourselves! There were some of our faves there like The Vegan Grindhouse and Vegan Junk Food Notts, and some vendors that were new to me like Mission Pies. There were also health food stalls, clothing stands, fresh produce vendors and more. Below are some of the stalls we visited and all the food we consumed. The market is located in front of Victoria Leisure Centre, near the Nottingham Arena at the bottom of Hockley and is only a 10 minute walk from the […]
