Le Garcon Saigon: New Southern Vietnamese

Le Garcon Saigon: New Southern Vietnamese

by lolleroll @ Vietnamese – lolleroll

From talking Bep/Nha Trang to Viet Kitchen, to my latest favourite beef pho spot, Bun Cha, it’s clear that I love my Vietnamese food. While my Vietnamese ventures almost always consist of ordering beef pho, Le Garcon Saigon focuses on Southern cuisine, where beef pho is apparently not as big a thing – well basically they don’t serve pho at all. Located near Pacific Place 3/Star Street in Wan Chai/Admiralty, this place is buzzing like no other in the area. I’ll be honest to say that I found it just a bit too noisy though. The prices are admittedly quite a bit higher than your usual casual Viet affair, but I loved all the dishes and service was more than excellent, hence I’d still recommend going for it. Wagyu beef tartare – HK$158 Looking back, the wagyu steak tartare (one of our starters) turned out to be the most expensive dish we ordered. Well that’s not too bad a news since the absolute price is not too high and these are typically not cheap elsewhere …

Nosh (SG): Beautiful Remote Brunch Spot Near Buono Vista

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

Hipster-ish brunch cafes are pleasantly abundant in Singapore, but Nosh offers something slightly less hipster, more classic. The fact that its location is more remote means that it’s usually not jam packed on weekends; you definitely won’t need a queuing ticket to get a table (like we did at Atlas Coffeehouse). The Greenhouse part of Nosh is an outdoor area, surrounded by greenery. It’s beautifully peaceful, no wonder the first time I attempted to brunch here on a Sunday afternoon, it was closed for a wedding. With such a setting, I would’ve been skeptical about their food, but after hearing multiple positive experiences, I had to try it for myself. House-cured Salmon with Scrambled Eggs The house-cured salmon with scrambled eggs didn’t look too inventive at first. But we were impressed with the execution of the unexpectedly creamy eggs. The smoked salmon was also delicious, especially when mixed in with the mentaiko sauce. Shakshuka with goat cheese and eggplant fritters *must order* But the shakshuka was definitely a winner. It might even be the best ones I’ve …

The House on Sathorn (BK): A Turkish-Asian Tasting Journey

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

Bangkok and Lima are no doubt my favourite cities to experience food in general, but especially “fine dining”. If you read my feature on The Maker’s The Hit List, or Fine Dining Redefined in Hong Kong, you’ll know that this concept often makes me cringe. But a number of restaurants on the World’s 50 Best or Asia’s 50 Best lists stray far away from the white tablecloths stereotype of fine dining, and focus on creating an experience of a meal. For example, the experience at World’s #5 Central in Lima taught me everything I wanted to know about unique Peruvian ingredients at different altitudes. Asia’s #36 The Dining Room of The House on Sathorn in Bangkok brought me a similarly impressive experience, teaching me much more than just Turkish cuisine, but also how to get creative. The Dining Room of The House on Sathorn As soon as I got off my Uber to check in at W Bangkok, this beautiful house next door had my full attention as I eagerly turned to a friend, to ask “what …

Viet Kitchen: New Menu Items Better than the Pho

Viet Kitchen: New Menu Items Better than the Pho

by lolleroll @ Vietnamese – lolleroll

When I first visited Viet Kitchen, I was pumped for the beef pho, having read some good reviews. I was ultimately a tad disappointed because it wasn’t really my kind of pho. While the beef soup base was outstandingly full of flavours, it was the soft pho and beef cuts that I didn’t love too much. But pho aside, their other dishes, especially some of the new items, turned out to be good surprises. They’re not traditional Vietnamese choices at all, but are delicious and definitely interesting to try. Salmon tartare – HK$108 *must order* This salmon tartare reminded me not to take authentic-ness too seriously as I’m certain the chef had no intention of serving traditional Vietnamese dishes, rather modern food with influences from different cuisines. With that in mind, this new item on their menu doesn’t taste very Vietnamese-like, but had strong Asian herby tastes to it. I loved the taro chips too! It’s a refreshing dish to kickstart the meal. Caramelised Chicken Wings – HK$88 Our group had many compliments for the …

Bolivia – My Unexpected Favourite in South America

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

Travelling around South America for a month, we encountered all types of travellers. Some were only visiting Peru, others had been in the continent for 6 months. But the one most frequently asked question was: What has been your favourite so far? As much as Machu Picchu of Peru will impress almost anyone, and there’s no doubt Lima has now become my favourite food city in the world, I never hesitated to answer this question: my personal number one was easily La Paz, Bolivia. Here are some of my highlights from La Paz and Bolivia in general: 1. The Death Road Over the course of the month, we went from coastal towns like Valparaiso (Chile) at close to 0m above sea level, to hot springs in Bolivia which reached as high as 4800m above sea level. Moving across the continent through these altitudes was one of the coolest experiences, but not as cool as travelling from an altitude of 4600m to 1200m within 3-4 hours, via 56km of downhill mountain biking on The Death Road in La …

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

I can’t complain about being flooded with Insta-worthy brunch and coffee choices since moving to Singapore, especially after discovering ATLAS Coffeehouse, Pacamara and The Botanist. But these cute coffee shops sometimes crowd out my search for enticing and fun dinner spots, until I came across Provisions. This new casual Asian fusion restaurant/bar on Dempsey Hill serves skewers, claypot rice and cocktails. Despite the high chairs and tables, it still sounded like the perfect laid back spot for a group of friends to wind down on a weekday. Plus, their 2-for-1 house wine happy hour deal lasted through to 10pm! “KFC” Korean Fried Cauliflower (SGD10) *must order* A photo of that caramelised glaze generously smothering what you would otherwise not have suspected was cauliflower, was the first reason I wanted to try Provisions. I quickly decided that it was also my favourite dish of the night. I’ve had “KFC” at a couple of other restaurants back in Hong Kong, but this rendition was probably the best. The edges were super crispy-crunchy and each piece of cauliflower was generously smothered in the addictively sweet …

10 Favourite Restaurants from Around the World in 2017

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

It’s that time of the year to reflect! I never used to make New Year’s resolutions or set ‘goals’ until last year and it turned out to be a great idea because I can now be proud that I accomplished two out of three (I know they’re hardly difficult things to achieve): 1. cook more and 2. travel more to places I’ve never been to before. First, I continued to perfect my signature tiramisu and others have now testified that it’s a perfect recipe! I discovered the wonders of sous-vide meat. I developed a cornflakes-crusted French toast I am pretty happy to cook for others. I created a salad dressing I love (recipe coming soon). Second, I travelled to Myanmar (Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake and Mandalay), Portugal (Porto and Lisbon), Peru (Lima and Cuzco), Bolivia (Copacabana, La Paz and Salar de Uyuni), Chile (San Pedro de Atacama, Santiago and Valparaiso) and am writing this post from Australia (Sydney and Melbourne)! While we had some good meals, it’s difficult to come up with a fruitful list of must-try spots because there probably aren’t a lot of those… It’s not a city where you could get impressive local dishes whatever establishment or street stall you walk into. I think travelling out of Hanoi is a must for any tourist. Sapa is a 12 hour overnight train away from Hanoi. Located 1500m above sea level, the scenery takes you to a different world, even the climate differs significantly from Hanoi – it got to 10-ish degrees Celsius on a summer night. A diverse range of ethnic minority groups inhabit the town, with Hmong peoples being the majority. The experience was absolutely unparalleled. It was unique and so worth the long journey. Halong Bay is about 3.5 hours (bus ride) away from Hanoi and an overnight cruise trip in the …

3 Casual Spots for a Satisfying Bowl of Beef Pho

3 Casual Spots for a Satisfying Bowl of Beef Pho

by lolleroll @ Vietnamese – lolleroll

A hot bowl of beef pho is the best kind of comfort food. Even with the sometimes unbearably hot weather in Hong Kong, I still crave sipping on the flavourful broth of a good bowl of these Vietnamese soup noodles. I used to go to Bep a lot; their food in general is pretty good. However, in the past year or so, a number of Vietnamese restaurants have opened up and they’re definitely good competition. Le Garcon Saigon and Viet Kitchen pop up to my mind to be the delicious new(ish) ones. But when it comes to beef pho, the super casual spots seem to do it right. Maybe it’s because they invest all their efforts perfecting the broth, rather than inventing interesting new menu items. There’s a place in my stomach for both, but let’s talk about the beef pho here! 1. Le Pho: All-Rounded Le Pho is the latest teeny pho spot to catch my eye on Lyndhurst Terrace. Most of the seats are by the bar (high stools), so it’s very very casual. It’s …

Xiao Ya Tou (SG): Pimped-up Local Fusion

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

I had been a tourist in Singapore countless times before moving here. The unbelievably cheap yet delicious chicken rice, char kway teow and laksa noodles at hawker centres would keep me satisfied time after time. These classic local dishes served in a super casual (borderline dirty) setting is really a key part of Singapore’s charm. But when it comes to local food outside of hawker centres – a proper restaurant where you can go to in better-than-flip-flops clothing – Xiao Ya Tou comes to mind first. Its ‘pimped up’ dishes provides an interesting twist to the classic Singaporean cuisine, without losing local flavours and maintaining good execution. The cute artsy hipster setting also makes it an appropriate spot to catch up with a group of friends, or go for a casual date. Small dishes to start with… We ordered a couple of small dishes to start. I loved the Brussel Sprouts (SGD14) – not only because I’m partial to brussel sprouts in general, but also because it was cooked with generous dollops of minced chicken which made …

Hawker Chan (SG): Is the Cheapest One Michelin Star Worth the Wait?

Hawker Chan (SG): Is the Cheapest One Michelin Star Worth the Wait?

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

Singapore’s food scene has perhaps been best known for its abundance of delicious cheap eats. A chicken rice at many hawker centres could cost as little as SGD2.5 (just over USD2 or less than HKD15). Despite its almost inconceivably cheap prices and simplicity of food, Hawker Chan has even earned itself a Michelin star. With the inevitable hype around what may be the cheapest Michelin star ‘restaurant’, I wasn’t surprised to hear all the mixed reviews: “don’t bother, it’s so overhyped” versus “it’s the best chicken rice!!!” I had to check it out for myself. There are two different outlets Hawker Chan was initially just a stall in the Chinatown Complex Food Centre – go up to the second floor and when you’ve located the long queue, you’ve probably found Hawker Chan. Since earning its Michelin star, they opened another outlet across the street. It’s a little more pricy, due to the improved seating arrangement and environment. We decided to go old-school and visit the original stall. 35 min wait on a Monday morning We expected …

by lolleroll @ lolleroll

I always knew of Ubud for its calm, serene and Eat-Pray-Love kind of vibe. Without the desire of going on a yoga retreat, it hadn’t been the highest priority on my list of places to visit. But then I heard about Mozaic. In fact, a friend from Jakarta shared a number of excellent restaurants and cafes, along with the top-selling point about Ubud: an abundance of beautiful yet extremely affordable resorts. We stayed at Ume Sri Villas – it’s new, secluded and highly recommended. I can now verify that Ubud is definitely a place worth visiting, even if you’re not a yogi. But in a rather remote and secluded location, I wouldn’t have expected amazing food options, let alone a full-blown intricate fine dining meal, accompanied with top notch service. The quality at Mozaic was that of what you’d usually only see in large cities with fierce culinary competition. “From our Local Farmers” 6-course menu We booked Mozaic almost two weeks in advance (bookings are must) and was informed about their “local” 6-course or 8-course …

See also: 3 Casual Spots for a Satisfying Bowl of Beef Pho Vietnamese food, specifically pho bo is one of my favourite kinds of comfort food. But coming across a good bowl of beef pho is not the norm when eating Vietnamese in Hong Kong. Usually you get served Chinese ho fun noodles that’s gone just a little too soft with a few slices of uninspiring overcooked beef. Nha Trang and Bep (featured in 5 Restaurants Worth Revisiting Again and Again) are probably among the tiny handful of Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong serving pretty decent bowls of pho. But the best one I’ve had (and it was only as recent as last week) has to be the one from Bun Cha Vietnamese Cafe & Restaurant. I think it’s opened by a Vietnamese woman (who you’ll likely see in there), operated by Vietnamese staff and all this authentic-ness shows in the taste of the food.
