How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

So, in the event that you can’t find this guy rolling around town, keep scrolling and we’ve got ... Read More »

48 hours in… Grunau

by Ben Duff @ Blogabout

Grunau, Austria; a tiny but incredibly picturesque village hidden away in the Austrian alps, surrounded by lakes and mountains. It’s easy to make friends for life here in Grunau but you’ll have to stay a few days to find out why! With plenty of activities to get your blood pumping and plenty of space to spread out a blanket or lounge chair to relax in, trust me, this place will be right up your alley. Now this picture might not be enough to make you want to visit, but perhaps we can persuade you… The Accommodation Probably one of the best reasons to visit is the wonderfully Austrian and uniquely Treehouse. Run by ex-chef Gerhard and his family, this ramshackle traditional old house really feels like a home. There’s been many people over the years that have experienced the comforts of the bedrooms, the glorious surroundings and the pure sincerity of the welcome they receive from Gerhard & Co. The dogs run freely through the garden down to the river and into the neighbouring fields without a worry, and you can too. Those that only stop for lunch often find themselves wandering a little far from the house as they follow […]

Welcome to Hoi An, the most magical place in Southeast Asia

by Milly Tamati @ Blogabout

After spending 5 years traversing the globe, I’ve developed a permanent addiction to chasing the next new thing. New cities, new foods, new cultures. I get antsy at the thought of going over trodden ground when there’s so much more of the world to explore. There is however, one exception to this. The place that after returning time after time still makes my heart sing: Hoi An. These are just some of the reasons Hoi An takes the cake as one of the most beautiful places in Asia! The Architecture With humble beginnings as small port town before exploding into a major port on the silk route, wandering the streets of Hoi An is like taking a walk through over 1000 years of history. Becoming a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999, the melting pot of Japanese, Chinese and French architecture is exceptionally well preserved. Unlike other Vietnamese cities which are chaotic and incredibly busy, Hoi An has a very serene atmosphere. Instead of high rise buildings and endless motorbikes, Hoi An is a kaleidoscope of pretty pastel hues and lanterns of every colour. Live music in the street sets the perfect scene to take an evening stroll along the […]

5 Game of Thrones Destinations You Can Actually Visit

by Gerard Altura @ Blogabout

Command your army of unsullied as a Khaleesi, brutally crush the skull of a Dornish prince, get slapped by a dwarf – the land of HBO’s Game Of Thrones is waiting for you in Europe! I never thought that I would be in the exact spot where Tyrion slapped the Hodor out of Joffery for unjustly killing some peasants in season two, but there I was in Dubrovnik where it was filmed. With the following five places you too can get slapped in the face exploring Westeros and Essos. Spoiler alert! Dubrovnik, for King’s Landing and more! Dubrovnik is located on the most southern part of Croatia’s coast, and is known for its old lanes and dust red rooftops – the perfect location for filming King’s Landing. Dubrovnik’s old town was used for filming scene of the House of the Undying in Qarth – a man-witch dungeon, where Daenerys Targaryen saw a weird vision and burned all the old mystical men alive with dragon fire in the blazing violence we all love. This is a must for Thrones’ fans of any level since this is where the Joffrey slap, the Red Viper vs the Mountain, the Battle of Blackwater Bay, […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

Leanne’s Journal: Berlin

by Busabout @ Blogabout

We made it to Berlin! Rocking up to this city, I really didn’t know what to expect. I had ideas in my head of its turbulent history, and terrible political past. How have the people been affected by the darker parts of the city’s story? After visiting, I realised it wasn’t at all what I expected. Here you’ve got Berliners, a free and liberated generation that make up one of the coolest, creative and eccentric cities in Europe. My first day was spent getting out and enjoying the sun on what felt like a miracle of an 18ºC day. I heard it’s a thing for Berliners to laze around on the grass in parks whenever the sun comes out, so I thought when in Rome (well, Berlin), I’d better check it out. Mauerpark flea market was a friend’s recommendation, and I’m so glad I had a free Sunday to browse. Just a short walk over to the park from the recommended Busabout hostel, I followed the music and found hundreds of people perched on a hill enjoying the sun. It was a lively sight with bundles of stalls, vintage pieces, trinkets, art displays and every kind of hippy, punk, earthy, […]

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a place of surprises, much of them elusive to first-time visitors with just a few days on the ground. Though a bit challenging at first, Ho Chi Minh City eventually became our favorite city in the world and a base for many of our adventures in the Southeast Asian region. Saigon doesn’t have a Times Square or Pudong. It’s a megacity comprised of small, distinct districts and alleys. Perch ... Read More »

Why You Should Visit Vietnam, Like Yesterday - Blogabout

Blogabout

When it comes to Southeast Asia, everyone rushes to get to Thailand, and reasonably so, when you think of their gorgeous temples, bustling night markets, and incredibly cheap food! But its neighbouring country, Vietnam, doesn’t get nearly as much love as it deserves. On my latest tour with Busabout, I was super excited to be exploring this country from north to south, driving through ridiculously scenic coastal roads and mountain-filled skylines. So in case you needed just a bit more convincing, here are ten reasons why you need to visit Vietnam, like yesterday. Vietnamese Pho Think of Heaven in a bowl. Now think of Jesus cooking said bowl with His very hands. That’s how heavenly this addicting rice noodle is, and if you do one thing in Vietnam, I suggest it be along the lines of eating your weight in rice noodles. Worth it. Not only are the excursions like the Cu Chi Tunnels or a visit to the War Remnants Museum enlightening, but …
